Barry Manilow...launches talent contest! YouTube entries, please!

Pop Idol Barry Manilow - who writes the songs that the whole world sings - now pines to nurture budding talent out of the shadows and into the spotlight on the stage in the trendy desert oasis.

Word out of the Manilow camp is that the perennial crooner has now launched a talent contest for aspiring stage performers aching to break into elusive show business!

Potential candidates (vocalists) are invited to submit a video of a themselves belting out their stuff to Manilow's web site on YouTube - where the precious entries - will be personally viewed by Mr. Manilow for due consideration.

The winner will be treated to an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas (cost of meals, airfare, and Hotel accommodation will be covered), gifted with back-stage passes, and nab tickets to a sold-out Barry Manilow concert at the Paris Hotel on the glitzy strip.

At that juncture, the lucky entertainer will be invited up on the stage, to perform a duet with the down-to-earth out-going hit-maker.

The promotion is being run in tandem with the release of Barry's new album - 15 minutes - his first featuring original songs in about ten years!

Gee, just this past week, I noted in a post that I just purchased a new microphone and amp so that I can venture into the street in Vegas in the next week-or-so to try out new material on tourists flocking into the city.

If God smiles on me, just maybe, Mr. Manilow will be driving by in his limousine and catch my act!

I'm all for doing a duet with Mr. Manilow - and winning the contest, too - you betcha!

Barry Manilow...in concert @ Royce Hall! UCLA March 22nd!

Barry is a dog lover!

Barry Manilow - ever-popular lounge lizard pop and prolific songwriter - trots onto the Royce Hall stage to perform live! (UCLA campus) on March 22nd.

No doubt, the youthful pop crooner - who penned such memorable tunes as "Copacabana", "Mandy", and "Looks like We Made it" - will pack the house with a cross-section of fans (young & old alike) that he has scooped up over the past few decades.

Deservedly, so!

One of his biggest chart-toppers - "I Write the Songs" - was actually not composed by Barry (which may come as a surprise to die-hard music-lovers) but by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys.

A bit of trivia you can trick you friends with at future pot-lucks!

But, from what I understand from inside sources - the "do" (every luscious strand) - is all Manilow's (no rug for this pop survivor, eh?).

Tickets are going fast, just betcha, so you better get-on-the-ball pronto.

See 'ya there!

Cobacabana...day I talked back to director! OMG...

Last night I woke up at about four o'clock in morning and found myself drifting back in time to the olden- golden days when I used to scurry around town to nab bit parts in the Film & Televsion industry.

For some inexplicable reason, a brief stint on the TV Movie - "Copacabana" (an adaptation of Manilow's hit song)- flooded my mind with hilarious memories.

Like "Lucy" - who was always trying to break into show biz - I was always get rooked into some fly-by-night production, or scam, which I can reflect on now and laugh heartily about.

If you recall, Manilow - who started out as a back-up pianist for chanteuse Bette Midler at the Men's Continental Baths in NYC - wrote the lyrics and music for "Copacabana" with partners Jack Feldman and Bruce Sussman (a catchy tune which debuted on Billboard's Magazine's Top 40 Chart on July 7th, 1978).

"Copacabana" is also known as "Copacabana (At the Copa)".

Manilow nabbed a Grammy Award for "Copa" in February 1979.

The popular crooner was approached one day - although I am not familiar with the specific background details (how the project came about)  - to produce  a televison MOW based on the storyline of the song.

Just like in the pop hit, the TV production featured  two main characters - Lola (her name was Lola, remember?) - and Tony (her lover).

Manilow and his co-writers -  Bruce Sussman and Jack Feldman - expanded the idea with additional songs and intriguing plot twists suggested by the song.

If you recall, at a climatic moment, a character is shot.

This is where I come in!

I was cast as a glorified extra (in a special bit!) - along with another actor - to dash out  on the dance floor and apprehend the gunman.

The scene was rehearsed quite strenuously and required exact timing that evening for two reasons.

For starters, the scene was being shot with dazzling special effects (and a stop-action camera) that was difficult and costly to set up.

But, there was a bigger dilemma looming on the horizon.

The production was fast-approaching "golden time".

When a company shoots long hours beyond the regular schedule - and the actors are not fed - they are entitled to steep overtime pay.

Once the regular hours have elapsed - the performers start receiving time-and-a-half - then double-time - also known as golden time.

So, it was imperative that the cast and crew get the shot in one take!

In Hollywood that's generally impossible (unless Clint Eastwood is at the helm).

So, the big moment arrived, and everyone on the stage was all keyed-up and waiting for the director to yell "action".

Unfortunately, because the camera was running, the director was forced to give a visual cue to the two of us (in the wings).

Once the director's hand gave the signal, we were supposed to dart across the stage, and drag the shooter away.

Unfortunately, shortly after the shot was rolling, I suddenly noticed that the director changed his position on the sidelines on the sound stage.

A large exotic palm tree was now blocking him from view.

In a panic, and unable to alert the director, I elected to keep my eye on my partner in the scene - and take my all-important cue - from him.

Suddenly, he lurched forward onto the stage, so I assumed the cue had been given.

Wrong!

He was so nervous that he jumped-the-gun.

And, the director was forced to scream "cut".

At this point there was quite a bit of cursing - and ranting and raving - falling on my virgin ears!

On the heels of that tirade, a slew of nasty comments followed, obviously intended for my partner and me.

I don't know whatever possessed me, but all-of-a-sudden, I cried out from my position across the room.

Sir!

Suddenly, there was  dead silence, as an eerie pall fell over the set.

I could imagine what everyone in that room was collectively thinking at the moment.

OMG!

He talked back to the director.

I continued unscathed.

"You changed your position, Sir. That palm tree was obscuring my view, so I wasn't able to visually catch your cue."

The silence was so load that it was deafening.

"Surprisingly, I wasn't tossed off the lot on my a**."

Without skipping a beat, the director shifted gears.

"Okay. Let's go for another take."

Whew!

I thought I would never eat lunch in this town again!

Barry Manilow...fan-a-lows big night upstaged by power outage! Crooner's "look" more natural...

Barry warbles popular tunes from eighties!

While Barry Manilow was gearing up for his opening night @ Paris in Las Vegas the unthinkable happened!

A power outage (which caused computer glitches to mangle the electrical flow of musical instruments prorammed for the show) forced the legendary crooner to reschedule the much-anticipated Friday kick-off show.

Because slotted attendees were left in an unexpected lurch, show producers were quick to assure Manilow fans that the precious tickets could be exchanged (or refunded in the alternative).

Meanwhile, just prior to the snafu, Barry was interviewed by perky Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonight.

In the past, I have joked that Mr. Manilow - with his shock of bottle-blond locks - was looking alot like Ellen DeGeneres every day.

Perhaps he perused the post?

On ET last night, the talented performer was very natural-looking, with a head of hair that was more in keeping with his skin tone, age, and stage persona.

His wardrobe was understated and elegant.

I expect the popular hit-maker will be well-received during his run here in Las Vegas!

Break a leg, Barry!

Barry Manilow...Gift of Love concerts! McCallum Theatre Dec. 4th thru 9th...

Although celebrated Pop Icon Barry Manilow just came off of a string of successful live! stage performances in Las Vegas, he's raring to trot back out, for an encore of sorts.

For instance, the famed crooner's handlers recently announced, that Mr. Manilow will entertain audiences at the McCallum Theatre December 4th thru December 9th.

But, get this!

The musical wunderkind is taking advantage of the upcoming gigs to "give back" to the community.

Funds generated by ticket sales will be donated to a handful of charities - twenty-five - at last count!

Thanks to the hit-maker with the knack for conjuring up catchy foot-tapping melodies, the coffers at - Guide Dogs of the Desert, the Desert A.I.D.S. project, Desert Paws, Animal Samaritans (to name a few) - will be counting their blessings (and greenbacks) this Yuletide season.

If you're a big Barry Manilow fan (or just love his hit - Copacabana - of  yesteryear) you may want to spring for a VIP ticket which includes a pre-show reception and a meet-and-greet with the charismatic legend who started out in the biz playing back-up for Bette Midler in the early seventies.

Julian Ayrs 1st Annual 10 Worst-Dressed Men's List...previews Feb 1st!

Manilow, the Joker or Ellen Degeneres on prozac?

Well, I expect some peacock feathers will fly on Sunday (Feb. 1st) when my scintillating list of the 10 Worst-Dressed Men is posted!

Actually, it wasn't difficult to rustle up a list of the 10 Best, which will be unveiled in tandem with the fashion disasters.

In fact - so many dudes I had my designs (um) eyes on - tended to be pretty fashion savvy from the get-go!

The celebrated ten best are quite the sartorial lot, in fact.

So, I guess you'd like a teaser or two to get 'ya through the weekend, eh?

In addition to a song or two that impish Barrie Manilow has mangled in recent days (Unchained Melody, for starters) I expect that there is a stylist or two that would like to wave a fashion wand his way.

And, though I am inclined to toss Phil Spector (known for his wall of hair) smack dab on top of the fashion-victim pile, I worry the swirling dervish might chase me down cobbled streets under picturesque storied-night-skies with a fully-loaded pistol and diaper in hand.

But, in the final analysis, I'm a ball*y kind-of-dude who likes to tempt the fickle finger of fate!

Kid Rock?

The "Donald"?

A weight-watcher's answer to the good fairy?

Well now, I'll have to depart, and leave you with bated breath.

See 'ya at "high noon" on February 1st!

Bette Midler...wows critics & fans in Vegas! Long way from Continental Baths...

Critics are raving about Bette Midler's dazzling new headlining show in Vegas at the Colosseum now through January 25th.

Time Magazine gushed:

"Midler is incandescent, and the new show ...is a fresh, sinfully satisfying distillation of her career."

But my fave flowed from the pen of a journalist at the NY Times.

"Like all glittering showgirls, (MIDLER) may wear sequins like a second skin, but the woman underneath is all flesh and blood, humor and heart."

The Divine "M" is wowing 'em every night at the Colosseum, according to USA Today.

I caught Ms. Midler's act for the first time back in the 70's (gosh, time flies) at the Palace in New York City.

I recall one particular number where - to the delight of ecstatic fans - Bette trotted out on stage in a hula outfit (or something to that effect) and teased the audience with a novel number from her extensive repertoire of hits.

About mid-way through her extravagant well-executed appearance - Ms. Midler introduced the audience to her young accompanist - an unknown by the name of Barry Manilow!

"He's going to be big," she enthused after a wild round of applause.

Back in the heady days of Disco, Mr. Manilow was paying the rent by conjuring up jingles for TV Commercials.

And, of course, by playing back-up for Midler not only at concert gigs on the road at whiskey joints around the country, but during her regular sold-out appearances at the trendy Continental Baths (a gay bath house) in downtown Manhattan.

Babe, you've both come a long way!

If you're in the desert oasis, catch the must-see musical extravaganza.

Barry Manilow...headlines Vegas; long way from Continental Baths!

Apparently, Barry Manilow woke up one morning to find himself "broke".

His financial advisers either mismanaged his money or simply ran off with it.

Sadly, Mr. Manilow was forced to return to "work".

Before you could say "Memories" the 70's pop star landed a gig headlining in Las Vegas. Now, he's taking his fans on a trip down nostalgia lane.

As I surfed the TV by remote last night, I caught a promo for a new album slated for release to coincide with his current sell-out concerts on the glitzy strip.

There he was doing a kind of cha-cha down a catwalk, occasionally hopping into the packed audience to give a big hug to a fan or kiss the air suggestively near a chubby cheek.

Ah, Manilow magic is thriving in the new millennium.

Is it me, or does Mr. Manilow look a lot like Ellen DeGeneres these days?

I am so glad he didn't go the Elvis route with the flashy threads, a larger than life persona, and carnival-like gimmicks. On this occasion, the diminutive crooner was attired in a classy dress jacket (with a slight sheen to it, which I warmed up to right away) with an open-collared shirt in midnight blue and chic tailored slacks.

No jewelery, though. Did his financial handlers run off with that, too?

Just as I started to wonder what-in-the-heck happened to COPACABANA, he announced to the audience how proud he was of the "new arrangement" which was crafted for an album due to be released.

Barrie, it's God awful. Don't tamper with success, please.

Even still, Manilow has come a long way since the Continental Baths (male bath house) where he first played the ivories in New York as a back-up pianist for legendary Bette Midler.

I wonder how he managed to remain focused on the sheet music - what with all those hot muscular dudes traipsing in and out of the steam room - every five minutes or so.

In the early seventies an old friend - Jeffrey Jones (I knew him when he was just emoting one-liners in high-brow Shakespearean productions, before he played the role of the principal in the comedy "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", and long before his sex scandal hit the tabloids a couple of years ago) invited me to attend a Midler concert at the Palace in New York.

At one juncture, Bette interrupted the show a beat to introduce her back-up pianist, Barry Manilow.

"He's going to be big one day. He's so talented," chirped Bette with a lot of enthusiasm.

Then, with her blessing, he proceeded to show off his stuff in a mini-performance. For the most part, he played a handful of jingles he wrote for TV commercials, and a tune or two he'd written for a couple of name performers.

A few years later, he stepped out of the background, and the rest is music history!

Yes, he's come a long way since the Continental Baths.

By the way, has he come out yet?

I noticed in the clip on the Arts Channel that Mr. Manilow was wearing earplugs. I wonder, were the lyrics being piped in for him to follow?

Personally, I found his distorted facial expressions distracting when the camera panned in, not flattering at all. Also, it was apparent from the way he was stretching the muscles in his neck - and vigorously working his lower jaw - that he was not using his vocal chords correctly.

Understandably, he was incapable of hitting the high notes.

Yes, all that can be sweetened in the studio. But - in a live performance - it's painfully obvious that Manilow is a mediocre singer with limited vocal range.

However, his tunes - although a bit mushy and smacking of sickening-sweet sentimentality that turns a stomach on occasion - are catchy. The memorable melodies have a way of lingering, too; the sure sign of a "hit".

Keep pluggin' away, Barry - you'll turn up another winner, yet.

But, please drop the "new arrangements".

In the final analysis the song stylings are deadly - and sure to kill your career - not revive it.
