AFI...a class act again! John Wildman PR man exit paves way...

A few weeks ago, I stopped reporting on AFI events - screenings, award-winners - special events - because of bad experiences with an a**hole by the name of John Wildman who headed up the Publicity Department.

Post:  02/02/10

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/02/john-wildmanpr-loser-exits-afi-fest.html

Just recently, by virtue of a press notice, I learned that AFI's top dawg vacated his post (without any explanation).

So, I was inclined to contact the AFI at the Western Avenue headquarters to determine the nitty-gritty.

In spite of the fact my e-mail inquiry was zipped off  to the institute's general address, I was quite surprised (happily so) to spy a quick response from the AFI in the yahoo mailbox the following day from the office of the Executive Assistant to the COO.

In a straight-forward no-nonesense manner, Ms. Conner (in charge of that office) confirmed that Wildman was no longer with the prestigious film entity.

Well, I'm impressed.

It appears that AFI is back on track and handling issues with a modicum of good taste and class.

So, look forward to press coverage in the future, whenever their revamped publicity department enlightens  me about upcoming AFI events.

John Wildman...PR loser exits AFI Fest! Press roar in approval...

Wimpy PR bozzo!

Films critics, filmmakers, and a smattering of hangers-on pining to be bona fide power-brokers in the dream factory (Hollywood and the movie biz) - are ecstatic over the surpising (but welcome) exit of John Wildman from the PR headquarers locally at AFI.

In recent weeks during this year's AFI screening extravaganza (amidst the old-world charm of the Roosevelt Hotel) I - for one - waved adios to the AFI par-tay on the heels of atrocious back-stabbing childish behaviour by PR man (wimp) John Wildman.

I should preface this article by noting that when I first applied for press credits way back in 2008 for the AFI Fest that year, Wildman was clueless about my background (and rise through the ranks over the past decade or so) ) in the industry.

Consequently, he was inclined to grudgingly offer up a  press badge - and throw me a bone or two now and then.- when it suited his whim.

Other reporters, bloggers - and the like - also complained non-stop nauseam about unfair treatment - triggered by an ego that was blown way out-of-proportion - especially in view of his lack of actual skills, talent, smarts (whatever).

There is a wise old saying that applies in this instant case in respect to my own run-in with Bob Gazalle's "house" boy.

"Never underestimate your adversary or - at a minimum - be aware of what an individual is capable of when you're sparring with them."

Because John wasn't familiar with my own realm of success - for instance - it wasn't until later that he realized what a heap load of sh** he stepped into due to his lack of, ethics, and non-existent  intelligence.

Even when he got a rude awakening one day, he was too stupid to licks his wounds, apologize, and make amends.

For example, during a particularly explosive day on the circuit, I proceeded to pen a post on his incompetence, bad attitude, and arrogance.

In addition, I proceeded to point out all his failings as a PR Director, and how it  negatively impacted the AFI Festival.

In response - he fired back with a nasty remark or two on my blog - in a bold-faced effort to embarrass me (which simply amounted to a bit of tit-for-tat).
But, I exercised my first bit of power right away; subsequently I didn't feel the graze of any of the stinging bullets he tried to whiz my way.

I not only ingored his barbs - but poste-haste - relegated the poorly-written attack (which amounted to a twisted and distorted interpretation of the facts) to the trash bin.

Next time we crossed paths, he proceeded to whine over the incident in front of onlookers, and had the gall to infer he'd been quite nice to me!

Fooey~

He's the kind of bastard who smiles to your face, then once you  turn away,  he stabs 'ya in the back.

John made a grievous error when he also played games with more poweful media types than he.

For example, if a reporter or host rubbed him the wrong way - or didn't kow-tow to him or his staff - he'd make sure their coveted spot on the red carpet was in nowhere-land (at the end of the roped-off area where the poor schmuchs would essentially be viewed as cast-offs or lowly good-for-nothings)

Normally, by the time attendees got to that end of the gangway, they were being dragged away by equally rude and insulting underlings with no people skills, either.

Of course, all the Public Relations folks were pretty big nothings, in my opinion.

Most are failed actors, or wannabee producers, who have an itsy-bitsy piece of power shielding their clients (sometimes big stars) from the media, moguls, and tawdry social-climbers.

On many occasion, I laughed, when I witnessed their clients getting no press at all because the journalist was mistreated and put off by the public relations person's bad attitude.

If John Wildman had any ethics, sense of professionalism - or even an ounce of compassion - he would have stacked all the  nameplates into one neat pile, shuffled them vigorously, then laid them out  on the red carpet in the order they appeared from the top.

But John is  too dumb to conjure up smart ideas like that.

Beside, Wildman loves rubbing journalist's noses in sh**.

In the alternative, he's all over them like a dirty shirt, brown-nosing.

Of course, I never put up with any of that bull, no sir!

I just kept notes, and embarrased the hell out of him and his staff, at every opportunity.

When I travelled to Dallas - you'd think that John wouldn't have been forewarned - about the perils of crossing moi!

Especially when you consider he realized early on - quite by accident - that fighting  me was a "no no" he should avoid at every cost.

For instance, one day John was googling himself  (yes, that's how vain he is) when he was shocked to stumble on a negative profile I penned on him.

He griped to one guest at the Festival lounge in Dallas - that  there was an  unsavory "review" of his public relations career skills - because of me.

That's how dumb John was.

I was quite aware of the fact that because of my stature in the industry - and due to the fact I wrote features on high-profile individuals - that I was pretty highly-ranked on search engines.

I knew right off-the-bat when he ran interference, and mistreated me, that he would end up all over the internet with a bad rep if I reported on his unprofessional conduct, ego-stroking, and selfish conduct.

Now, you'd think John would have learned his lesson, right?

No, he dug his heels in, and persisted with his shameful disreputable conduct.

On one occasion in Dallas, he actually lied and told me an event I wanted to attend (which I had been invited to by the organizers &sponsors) wasn't on the fest schedule!

Later, he relented, and admitted there was a special function for kids at Victory Park.

"I thought the tattler wouldn't be interested in the event because it was for kids," he waffled in his defense unconvincingly.

Was he kidding?

I have always loved being involved with projects for children; in fact, on numerous occasions I have promoted highly-lauded oganizations such as KIDS First, etc.

Even though that issue was ironed out to my satisfaction, with an apology to boot from Wildman, his sleazy conduct continued.

When the AFI was preparing to kick off  their 2009 Festival in Los Angeles in November, for example, I whizzed off an e-mail requesting my press pass for this year's celebration of film.

For a couple of days, John ignored my e-mail, in spite of the fact he assured me in the fall of 2008 that I was "family" now.

Yeah, he's such a phoney!

Should I have bowed down and kissed his unwashed feet?

Push came to shove, when a couple of journalists (and moi) were insulted on the opening night of the AFI Fest, after a premiere red carpet screening.

I sipped on a beer for awhile, and then elected to take in a private party at the poolside bar, at the rear of the Roosevelt Hotel.

A tall imposing Afro-American guard - after catching sight of my press badge - barred my path and gruffly ordered me away.

"No press allowed," he snarled in my direction.

I understood that, no problem.

On occasion, celebrities pine for a bit of privacy, at after-parties held by the sponsors.

So, I drifted off to rustle up some action, elsewhere.

Shortly after, a couple of journalists spied me chug-a-lugging my beer in the main bar, and dashed off to let off some steam.

"I can't believe it," one reporter bellowed.

"They treated us like dirt."

A second journalist piped up.

"We give them thousands of dollars of free publicity and they have the nerve to treat us like that."

The next day, I e-mailed John about the nasty incident, so he would be aware of the fact media types did not appreciate the way they were being treated.

In response, he zipped back a communication, in which he curtly informed me that my reservationn for a red carpet event the next night was cancelled because of a lack of space!

And, get this, he didn't even bother to respond to my complaint issues!

The next day - after a post I penned was published on the internet tossing the spotllight on the despicable behaviour of staff members (and guards) going down at AFI - he e-mailed a second communication noting that another reservation for the next night's screening was also cancelled due to a full house.

Well, I wasn't born yesterday, nor do I have stupid written across my forehead.

Fortunately, the films I was intent on screening, were part of the Envelope series sponsored by the daily paper (Los Angeles Times).

So, I caught the flicks at the Landmark Theatre in West Los Angeles.

Betta!

I was treated well - (free soda and snacks) - and was among my "people" not jacka**es like Wildman.

Needless to say, I have not responded to any of their press notices since then, nor have I bothered to waste my professional time giving them any publicity for their festivals, top ten lists, or special functions.

Now that John Wildman has departed, I have informed AFI that I may consider covering their projects in the future once again.

Hopefully, Bob Gazalles - director of the AFI Fest in Los Angeles -will hire a professional, competent, and well-mannered individual capable of treating industry folks with a little more respect than the "Wild" man!

Like moi!

Kidding.

The Dallas Film Society (DFS) zipped off a press release to me this week to announce that Mayor Tom Leppert and (wife) Laura Leppert have been named Honorary Chairs for the Dallas International Film Festival (2010).

Mayor Leppert and his wife have wholeheatedly backed the prestigious film festival since its inception in 2007 - which proved to be valuable to the inaugural edition  - and a professionally-run fest sure to gather steam in coming years (with much to contribute to the industry as well).

Leppert joined Governor Rick Perry, Peter Bogdanovich, Ross Perot, Jr. and others at last year's Texas Day celebration of film at upscale Victory Park which served as a culmination of the 2009 event (which moi also attended and reported on daily).

Except for Peter Bogdanovich, who turned out to be a suffering arrogant son-of-a-bit**, the jaunt out to the desert proved to be a very rewarding and fruitful one.

AFI Dallas...overbooked seats, mistreatment of Festival Volunteers, and John Wildman's rude & insulting staff!

AFI Dallas just celebrated its third illustrious year on the Festival circuit.

Already, the AFI chapter out of the Lone Star State, has proven to be a creative (and marketing) force to reckon with.

For example, when the festival wrapped last year, ticket sales were tallied at a whopping $100,000.00.

But, get this!

Before AFI Dallas even swung open its screening doors at the two venues playing host this year (NorthPark & Magnolia Theatres) the box office had already managed to rustle up the staggering sum of $100,000.00 plus in sales receipts.

Understandably, AFI Dallas is currently going through growing pains, especially in respect to the booking process.

For example, shortly after I left the red carpet one evening, two film buffs dashed up and angrily waved a couple of tickets in my face.

"Sir, this festival is selling seats that aren't any good," he hollered with a tinge of frustration in his voice.

Say what?

Apparently, the filmgoer and his girlfriend purchased two tickets for "Gigantic" at Victory Park, then proceeded to stand in line with all the other excited ticket-holders the night of the much-anticipated screening.

After about thirty minutes later, they were turned away without explanation (along with about thirty other disgruntled movie buffs in the same situation).

"It's not the money," he lamented.

"My girlfriend and I made the plans for the date earlier in the week and intended to make a romantic night of it with dinner and everything."

Then, he made an important observation.

"There was no notice on the ticket that said we might not get a seat. And, they didn't inform us that even if we stood in line, we might not get in."

Boy, was he pi**ed!

I noted for the record that I was in their corner all the way.

In retrospect, it appears that a pass-holder (an individual who buys a pass for access to all films during the course of the AFI Festival for a set fee), Festival big-wig, or a member of the Press was given priority in spite of the fact the young couple paid well-in-advance with cash in hand.

That stinks!

In addition, a handful of volunteers who were promised passes to a couple of films in exchange for their services throughout the day, found themselves SOL on occasion, too.

Frankly, in my opinion, those tickets should have been honored along with the rest.

If not, the least the Festival could do is promise cash in exchange for the face value of the ticket, to ensure volunteers are properly compensated for their generous contribution to the success of the Festival.

Don't you agree?

Notwithstanding those glaring irregularities which need a quick fix, a couple of John Wildman's staff in the publicity department were not only incompetent (and prone to tell lies), but rude and insulting to members of the press, on occasion, as well.

For instance, although I received an invitation to attend a noon-hour event sponsored by the YMCA for underprivileged kids, details about the red-carpet event were not forthcoming from Tanya Wright (who was in charge of organizing the press).

On the night prior to the outing for the young ones, I hadn't received specific details to facilitate coverage of the event, so I queried Miss Wright about the schedule for the next day in person at the Magnolia venue.

"I'm organizing that now," she excitedly chirped, "And, will send out the information tonight."

When the info failed to arrive by 9 a.m. in the morning, I zipped off an e-mail to Wright with a request for the info.

In a response e-mail, which arrived about an hour later, John Wildman's right-hand woman suddenly did an astonishing about-face.

"There isn't any event scheduled for the lunch hour," she insisted in her curt reply.

At this juncture, I dredged up the e-mail invite from the AFI mailbox, and inserted the information into a follow-up communication that essentially noted for the record that she was obviously mistaken.

Within minutes (and shortly after firing off an e-mail to John Wildman about the discrepancies) Ms. Wright e-mailed back.

"Okay. There is a function. You are welcome to attend. Show up on the red carpet at 11:45. See you there."

Duh!

I arrived at NorthPark just in the nick of time, as hundreds of kids bounced off bright yellow busses, and on to the red carpet for photo ops with popular actor Patrick Warburton.

When Ms. Wright spied me taking notes, a curious look crept across her face.

Then, she dashed over and made an odd comment in view of the aforementioned facts.

"Oh, you came!"

"Of course," I replied sternly, "I was invited."

After the fun-filled event wound down, and the kids were happily seated in the theatre munching on snacks, I proceeded to check my e-mail.

In one hasty communication, John Wildman tried to gloss over the obvious, and took a position in which he sought to exonerate himself and Miss Wright of any blame for the alleged misunderstanding.

In so many words, Wildman asserted that the info on the event was not forthcoming because he and Miss Wright were under the impression I would probably not be interested in attending an event crawling with hundreds of kids (!).

Then, he took a dishonest leap, and made a wild statement that since the Tattler wasn't the kind of publication that was interested in news items pertaining to school kids, that AFI Dallas elected not to follow through and provide the information promised.

Mr. Wildman obviously never reads the Tattler.

If he did, he'd know that I have penned stories on Kids First, for instance, an organization that sifts through films in search of ones that meet the right set of criteria for the youth market.

In addition, I have reported on workshops for children that are held from time to time at the David Geffen Playhouse in Westwood.

Likewise, I have written posts on children's books, the dangers of lead-poisoning in toys, face-painting and costume-making at the Grove mall, and so forth and so on.

I always endeavour to reach out to the community, no matter what the age group!

In a follow-up e-mail, I pointed out that I was disappointed that Wright would lie to me to cover up her shortcomings and save face.

That evening, Miss Wright (obviously stung by the remarks I made to John Wildman earlier in the day) continued with her lies and deception.

Although I informed her that I did not wish to discuss the matter further - after all, she was causing a scene on the red carpet in front of other journalists, the paparazzi, and Festival-goers - she became belligerent.

In a burst of rage, she retorted angrily:

"No wonder no one likes you!"

I was shocked by her unwarranted mean-spirited remark which was totally unprofessional.

In fact, her wild assertions were not true!

Almost daily, I have received complimentary remarks in response to a myriad of posts - and, likewise, regularly receive a raft of e-mail communications in which fans note how much they do, in fact, like me.

Needless to say, I didn't attend AFI Dallas to win a popularity contest.

A few minutes later, I happened to bump into John Wildman on the red carpet.

Holy mac!

He refused to believe that his self-indulgent assistant uttered the nasty comment.

"She didn't say that," he angrily asserted.

Fortunately, a journalist who was present when Miss Wright aimed the ugly slur at me, happened to stroll by at that precise moment.

So, I grabbed his arm and pulled him Wildman's way - at which point - he confirmed what had transpired earlier.

"I'll talk to her," he promised.

I guess he followed through, because on the heels of the incident, I began to also experience problems with Miss White's associate (Michael Devous).

Was he retaliating against me because of my run-in with Tanya Wright?

Although John Wildman assured me details for two big gala events would be forthcoming in an hour or so from the desk of Mr. Devous, no confirmation on time schedules and locations were sent out.

Finally, I drafted an e-mail to Mr. Devous in which I noted for the record, that for some inexplicable reason the information was not forthcoming.

Mr. Devous reacted like a flippant Queen.

In an communication fired off a few seconds later, Devous "pasted" a page from the dictionary which spelled out the precise meaning of the word "inexplicable".

Then, the catty little man had the gall to infer that the e-mail address on file for me (which I provided weeks ago) was probably the reason for the mix-up in question.

In sum, Devous tried to thrust the blame on me by alleging that I gave him an incorrect e-mail address, which accounted for the failure of information to arrive safely in my mail box.

What a load of hogwash!

The e-mail address he was referring to was - in fact - correct.

If the bombastic little sh** had a higher IQ, he would have surely noticed that the e-mail address he was referring to "forwarded to" my yahoo account.

In a nutshell, the two e-mail accounts were merged together, so there would be no need to check both accounts individually each day.

Indeed, every e-mail Mr. Devous sent out since we were first in touch weeks ago not only arrived without incident, but was promptly responded to.

How do I know?

I forwarded all the e-mails to myself so there would be copies on file.

Of course, I am not surprised by the bit**y conduct of Mr. Devous - especially after witnessing his personality on the loose in the AFI Lounge now and then during the course of the fest.

For example, on two specific occasions I was witness to, the PR flunky was drunk and disorderly in front of a roomful of celebrated festival guests, members of the press, and AFI staff.

Yup, the swirling dervish made a total a** of himself!

Time to clean house, Mr. Wildman!

AFI FEST...Publicity Director John Wildman lashes out! The man is off his rocker...

Yesterday, I penned a post noting a couple of screw-ups that occurred this past week at the AFI Film Fest, due to the incompetence and inexperience of John Wildman and his staff in the publicity department.

In particular, I pointed out that information Mr. Wildman provided to me was incorrect, which resulted in a bit of an uproar in the film community.

For example, Wildman informed me personally that Meryl Streep would not be appearing on the red carpet at the Premiere of "DOUBT" slated for screening on October 30th.

Ms. Streep did stroll down the red carpet the next night, in fact.

Subsequently - I was forced to edit a post to explain the snafu to my readers and film buffs - especially in view of the fact that one AFI supporter (unfamiliar with the facts) blamed me for reporting erroneous information.

In addition, I pointed out in the post that Mr. Wildman's staff provided contact information for Ms. Streep and Joaquin Phoenix which was also incorrect.

In a response communication, Mr. Wildman tried to wiggle out of blame.

For example, he noted for the record that AFI updates information and sometimes get it wrong. (okay!)

Instead of resting his case there, he proceeded to snidely remark:

"But, seriously Joaquin Phoenix? Meryl Streep?"

John, I have copies of the e-mails that confirm my allegations to be true.

Some of the issues he addressed related to my comments about his shoddy set-up at the Roosevelt Hotel.

For example, I noted in my post that when I stopped into the publicity director's office at the Roosevelt on Wednesday to pick up my media badge, it was obvious from the poorly-set-up press headquarters that Wildman and his staff were not only inexperienced but incompetent as well.

His reply?

"I'm a publicity director. Not an interior decorator."

I don't expect you to be, John.

An intelligent "boss" in charge of a department such as yours - with an ounce of experience and know-how - would have simply farmed the task out if they weren't capable of putting together a professional presentation themselves.

It's the details, man!

If Mr. Wildman was a mature individual - with a smaller ego and a bigger IQ - he would have fessed up to his shortcomings without any qualms.

After all, it's not very intelligent or productive to ignore the obvious.

Has the man such little self-awareness?

In the communication he zipped off, without much thought or reflection, he even tried to toss the blame on me.

For example, in a condescending manner, he inferred that I didn't know any better.

After all, her asserted, I was "new".

Ha!

As I noted in a response e mail today, I am certainly not new!

If anything, I am getting long in the tooth.

In fact, I have been involved hands-on in show biz and the film industry - in a myriad of capacities - for over thirty years!

I was in front of the camera when Mr. Wildman was still pooping his drawers!

And, his mother was wiping his snotty little nose.

Oh, but Mr. Wildman had so much more to toss into the fray.

He chirped that I didn't know anything about festivals or how they worked!

Because he has handled a couple, he's suddenly the expert, eh?

Well, I had a big guffaw over that one!

I have been attending and reporting on festivals for years!

I not only know how they work, but why they don't, when they don't.

When a Director at a Film Festival is "pig-headed" - doesn't know who key players are in the industry, and allows an overblown sense of self-importance get the better of him - then it's time to call it a day.

Mr. Wildman concluded his little diatribe by lamenting that I must have had a bad day.

On the contrary, my week was smashing!

In closing, he tried to put a muzzle on me and restrict my right to free speech.

He issued a directive that I focus on the filmmakers.

"They are the story. Not me."

Duh!

As I noted in a follow-up, I don't just report on the films and their makers.

On the contrary!

I also pen commentary on the scuttlebutt - on the red carpet, off of it - and behind-the-scenes.

Don't expect me to wax poetic in a phony puff piece to bolster a star's ego, though.

I may be inclined to throw a spotlight on the AFI FEST, however, and what I perceive as a "clubby" elitist organization run by a handful of snobby individuals who are under the mistaken impression that their sh** doesn't stink.

To cast a blind eye all to that would be a ludicrous notion.

Quentin Tarantino once said:

"I don't believe in elitism. I don't think the audience is this dumb person that is lower than me. I am the audience."

AFI FEST...Gala premiere in "DOUBT". Hoffman and Streep no shows? Red Carpet event fizzles...

Well, I reported earlier in the week that last-minute there was a lot of excitement over the announcement that "DOUBT" - adapted for the screen from the award-winning play by John Patrick Shanley - would kick-off the AFI Fest's gala opening night.

Festival-goers were thrilled at the prospect of mixing and mingling on the red carpet with two of the celebrated stars - Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman - who grace the screen in "DOUBT".

But, looks like the premiere has lost its luster and is fizzlin' out.

At press time, it was confirmed that Streep and Hoffman would be no-shows at the premiere.

According to PR Director John Wildman.

Who wants to kibitz with a bunch of suits from the studio - or the stuff-shirts from AFI - on what was supposed to be a glittering star-studded gala event?

Without any tinsel on hand, what's the point?

Notwithstanding, DOUBT will be screened as an uncut unpolished version that isn't ready for public consumption, yet.

Were the AFI Fest organizers stuck, in a bind, or what?

I guess when "The Soloist" bowed out this past week, AFI was left holding an empty bag and the big-wigs had to scramble for a replacement.

DOUBT looked like a good prospect for the gala initially, but at this late juncture,it appears to be a losing choice for the Fest Event.

Maybe DEFIANCE will have a little more pizazz on Friday Night.

Or, at least a bit of titillating red carpet fodder to write about.

I'll keep you posted on the curious goings-on at the AFI FEST events which are slated to start-up at the end of this week and run for eleven days at a handful of venues around Tinsel Town.

At the moment, AFI is off to a shaky start, though.

AFI Publicity Director John Wildman screwed up.
Streep did walk the red carpet last night.
Talk about egg on the face!
