Lindsay Lohan...pleads "No Contest" Blinded by the Bling! Jail time!

Lindsay Lohan has done an about-face and elected to pass on a long drawn-out trial on a charge of allegedly making off with a five-finger discount at a trendy retail outlet situated in picturesque Venice Beach (CA).

Earlier today, legal counsel appeared on her behalf at a Los Angeles courthouse to enter a surprise plea of “no contest”.

A sruprise because up-until-now, Ms. Lohan's handlers were adamant that she was inncoent, and that the "Mean Girls" star intended to have her day (well, another one, at least) in court.

The term is a fancy one – which usually masks the guilt surrounding an alleged crime – to allow a reluctant defendant to bow out gracefully.

When you factor in - Judicial Economy - it may have been a wise move on the part of her legal counsel in the final analysis.

The defendant is still considered convicted for all intents and purposes, but the plea may be challenged during an appeals process, if the defendant so desires.

A cynical few take the view that a defendant has not necessarily asserted his or her innocence - or admitted guilt - when they elect to plead "no contest".

In sum, the court is being given the nod to proceed with the disposition of the case.

On occasion, accused individuals plead no contest - because legal counsel has advised that in view of the facts and evidence on record - that the charges against the individual may be difficult to beat in an actual court-of-law.

In Lindsay Lohan’s case there is allegedly video footage of the troubled actress waltzing out of the retail store without paying for the merchandise.

Extenuating circumstances may have allowed for some wiggle room, especially with a competent attorney at the helm.

For example – Ms. Lohan’s team were within their rights to argue that the jewellery was on loan (or in the alternative argued that Ms. Lindsay simply tried on the piece of bling and forgot to return it to the clerk).

The fact her handlers returned the item once the incident was reported to the police - appeared to seal her fate in the eyes of the law, fans, and the public-at-large though - who were not easily hoodwinked.

Ms. Lindsay would have been better off arguing that she was a kleptomaniac – who needed therapy and counseling – and not hard time in the local slammer.

In response to the no contest plea, Ms. Lohan was sentenced to four months in jail.

In addition, the astute bench warmer ordered that the talented – but drug-addled actress – perform 480 hours of community service as well.

Lohan, was not required to appear in court today, but must report to jail on or before June 17th to fulfill her obligation to society.

However, at press time, insiders noted that Ms. Lohan may be eligible for house arrest which would require an electronic monitoring device on her person 24/7 to ensure the terms of the agreement are met.

Lohan was also ordered to complete much-needed therapy and is required to enroll in an anti-shoplifting program as well.
With this sorry chapter of her life closing in the near future, hopefully Ms. Lohan can get back to business as usual.

For instance, last month, Lohan landed her first feature film part since the whole fiasco began many moons ago, and is expected to go forward and co-star with John Travolta and Al Pacino.

The project is a film bio on John Gotti and the mob.

Zsa Zsa Gabor...hospitalzied for pneumonia! Feisty screen siren is tough!

Screen legend - Zsa Zsa Gabor - was rushed to the hospital yesterday when her personal physician determined that the feisty star was stricken with a serious bout of pneumonia.

According to the latest update from one of Ms. Gabor's handlers, the ailing film star has been having trouble breathing because of fluid in her lungs.

Apparently, the prognosis for recovery is poor, as medical staff engage in an all-out effort to literally save the screen siren's life.

In recent months, Ms. Gabor suffered through major health problems, which resulted in at least one surgery and the amputation of one leg.

The actress - famous for being famous - is the second oldest of three Gabor sisters.

One sister - Eva Gabor - was well-known to American audiences for a role she played in a popular TV sitcom (Green Acres) and for being a close friend and confidante of legendary talk-show host Merv Griffin.

Although it alleged that Eva and Merv were lovers, later the truth was revealed that Griffin was actually gay, and that Ms. Gabor was basically a "beard".

I met Zsa Zsa - a Hungarian-born actress - briefly on the set of Naked Gun 2 1/2 a few years ago.

In that off-the-wall big-budget comedy feature, Gabor took a poke at herself in a small cameo role.

I found Ms. Gabor to be charming and gracious.

Gabor was once married to Conrad Hilton and the union produced one daughter.

The flamboyant actress received acclaim for a role she played many years ago in John Huston's film bio of Toulouse-Lautrec titled "Moulin Rouge".

Gabor also landed a part in Orson Welles' classic "Touch of Evil".

By the way, tomorrow is the anniversary of Orson Welles' birthday (May 6th).

Mine, too!

On the heels of the sad news, fans of Ms. Gabor are optimistic - no doubt - that she will once again pull through.

Get well soon, Zsa Zsa!

Sophia Loren...honored with tribute in Hollywood! Glam Queen still radiant @ 78!

Tonight, legendary beauty - Sophia Loren - is slated to appear at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre where she will be honored with a tribute by her peers.

Billy Crystal hosts the star-studded event which took her by surprise.

"I didn't expect it," Ms. Loren fessed up graciously upon hearing the exciting news.

"It's wonderful because I belong to Italian movies - and generally - we Italians, we don't get these wonderful, great, great honors, even though we deserve it sometimes."

John Travolta and Bob Marshall (who directed her in the musical bomb "Nine") are slated to attend the festive start-studded event.

As I noted in my  own review of the ill-fated musical - unfortunately - Ms. Loren's talents were greatly wasted in that uneven production - which was panned by many relevant critics in the show-biz arena.

Of course, Ms. Loren is probably best known for starring opposite film greats like Cary Grant, well-received studio features such as "Houseboat".

In that classic flick, Loren demonstrated a definite flair for comedy.

However, the heralded actress has also turned in fine dramatic performances over the course of her illustrious film career, which have also received rave reviews.

For example, in 1961, she starred in Vittorio De Sica's "Two Women" to much acclaim.

The drama - a dark tawdry tale about a mother who is raped while trying to protect her daughter during a conflict in war-torn Italy - showcased her acting gifts to a "t".

That raw heart-wrenching performance won her an Academy Award for Best Actress (in addition to twenty-two other prestigious awards in filmdom around the globe).

In additional to being well received critically, the flick was also a commercial success.

Other awards include an Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to world cinema.

On that celebrated occasion, Officials crowned Loren "one of the world cinema's great treasures".

In 1995, she also received a coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award (Golden Globe).

At 78, Ms. Loren (a grandmother) is still radiant, active, and sexy!

Ms. Loren was born in Rome, Italy.

When she was 14, Loren entered a beauty contest in Naples and was selected as one of the finalists.

Shortly thereafter, she enrolled in an acting class - and subsequently - was cast as an extra in "Quo Vadis" (1951 film by Mervyn LeRoy).

The cameo launched her career!

Tonight, the Academy will screen clips from Ms. Loren's long distinguished film career, and tout her as a film great.

Congrats, Ms. Loren!

Lindsay Lohan...court documents sealed! Wheels of Justice turn slowly!

Lindsay Lohan trotted into court bright-and-early this morning to face the music, but - if anything - ended up participating in a hearing that amounted to little more than a brief intro of bigger things to come.

In fact, judging by the proceedings that took place in a Los Angeles courtroom today - and in view of all the ifs, ands or buts - it is fairly obvious at this juncture that the court-room drama is not going to be an open-and-shut case for either side.

For example, at one point, Lohan's attorney quizzed the Judge about one issue when she appeared to be perplexed by a ruling.

"Your honor, you said my motion was partly denied. Does that mean that it was partly granted?"

"Yes," the seasoned bench-warmer responded in the affirmative without hesitation.

Then, the hearing got curiouser and curiouser.

A court date was set for March 25th, for instance, but - whether the parties show up or not - depends on Lindsay's decision to accept or reject a plea offer.

Uh-huh!

Armchair viewers at home - without a law degree under the belt - may have trouble fathoming the particulars on television (unless they're fans of "Law & Order" or "Perry Mason").

Then, the Judge expressed his frustration over leaks in the legal proceedings - that have been baffling Los Angeles Superior Court officials in recent weeks - and running interference with his directives.

To help combat the dilemma, His Honor requested that Lohan's attorney submit all documentary evidence and legal briefs under seal - "for his eyes only"- in the future.

Golly, the details surrounding this felony charge are turning out to be intriguing top-secret-stuff!

Bottom line, it was gut-wrenching for folks seeking closure for Lindsay Lohan.

An outcome appears to be far off on the horizon down a long-and-winding bumpy road!

Keanu Reeves...titter on Technorati stirs up fan base!

Leather-clad Keanu revs up hearts in the fast lane...

The other day when the news was announced that Charles Gibson was assigned the coveted task of interviewing VP hopeful, Sarah Palin, I penned a post tongue-in-check questioning whether the ABC newsie was capable of putting forth the hard-hitting questions necessary to pin down the former Ice Queen.

To spruce up the post a bit, I included a publicity still of Gibson interviewing actor, Keanu Reeves.

With a bit of wicked glee, I inputted a caption over the photo, which read:

"Charles Gibson probes Keanu Reeves on acting techniques"

Although I didn't make any negative comments about Keanu's acting ability per se - anyone familiar with the jibes of film critics over the years - would surely read between the lines.

Shortly after the post was fed to Technorati, fans were quick on the uptake!

One of the actor's die-hard supporters got to the point straight out.

"Say what you will (!) I am still going to see Keanu's new film."

The fan proceeded to post a clip of the actor's upcoming film scheduled for release in the near future.

Then, about twelve hundred bloggers jumped on the bandwagon, too.

Ah, such a sensitive cast of characters, eh?

Funny, that!

You see, I am a Keanu Reeves fan, as well!

In spite of it, I never permit my fandom to affect my discerning eye, though.

Let's face it, Keanu has turned in a handful of solid performances in surefire box-office hits over the years.

On the downside, a few turkeys have gobbled up the silver screen, too!

Probably the sensual star's best characterization to date - was that of the raunchy street hustler in "My Own Private Idaho" - in which he starred opposite teen idol River Phoenix.

No doubt, it was Gus Van Sant's direction at the helm, that elicited such a bang-on performance out of the teenage heart throb.

Keanu's "cool" looks and aloof persona also suited the Matrix franchise to a "T".

I kind-of liked the dude he played in the movie about the run-away bus, too.

And, although Point Break was never a critical success, it was a piece of mindless fluff that entertained, nonetheless.

In that action adventure heist film, Keanu played an undercover law enforcement officer, out to nab a criminal (Patrick Swayze) he befriended against the breathtaking backdrop of the California surfing scene.

It was in this particular feature that Keanu uttered his stilted rendition of the infamous line - "I'm an FBI Agent" - which ultimately - turned the unwitting ham into a show biz legend!

Like him or not, it's hard to ignore the endurance of the Reeves phenomenon.
