Michelle Obama...dining @ Bellagio! Prevention of obesity in Red Rock...

1st Lady Michelle Obama was spied dining at Sensi at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas the other night.

A day or so earlier, Mrs. Obama was a hop-and-a-skip down the highway at Red Rock, promoting outdoor health regimens to curb obesity in children.

Michelle Obama was greeted by Senator Reid who was on hand to participate in the high-profile event.

Although Michelle Obama’s appearance was categorized as an "Official" event (God forbid anyone should get the idea the 1st lady was there to support - or endorse - the Senator on a campaign trail).

Mrs. Obama exhibited good manners when she chose to lift up Reid by the bootstraps.

Mrs. Obama made a point of noting that Senator Reid was a key member of her husband’s “team” and vital to the Democratic party agenda.

“He’s been a tremendous asset - not just to my husband - but to the country and to all the kids,” she crowed.

There were about 100 parents, teachers, and government workers in attendance.

That afternoon at Red Rock, Senator Reid touted the new health care law and touched lightly on its preventive measures.

“We must do something to stop and prevent disease before it starts.”

“Prevention hasn’t got the attention it deserves,” the Senator continued, “but is the key to bringing down health care costs.”

At this juncture, the rag-tag event in the exotic desert, became a sort-of mutual admiration society right before everyone’s eyes.

“The 1st lady’s program to fight child obesity is a good example and the message she’s trying to send is for Americans to get more exercise and eat better,” Reid added.

On the press junket to Red Rock, Michelle Obama launched her program “Let’s Move! outside” which focuses on getting children to facilitate recreational parks and areas more.

On Michelle’s cue, the 18 children strong, were invited to participate in a routine of stretching exercises (to get limber?) - at which point at the 1st Lady’s direction - the rambuctious kids scrambled up a rock.

Michelle, clearly not in the appropriate attire for strenuous physical activity, stayed below to assist Senator Reid lift up children, when needed.

Although one child surprised Mrs. Obama when she squealed that she didn’t need help, at least there weren’t any unexpected questions from wise young ones (at the behest of their parents?) about controversial issues such as illegals, deportation, the need to hide behind rocks, and the like.

I suppose this group was thoroughly screened and prepped since the event went off without a hitch for the most part.

Next time out, I anticipate that Mrs. Obama will be less fashion-conscious (she has been on my Best-dressed woman's list, after all) - and more fitness-oriented in her approach in the future - to avoid potentially embarrassing wardrobe snafus brought on by a slight physical trip-up or a gust of desert wind blowing in off the Mojave unexpectedly.

24 Hour Fitness...sports erection social hub! Perk up those pecs in WeHo...

After being a bit of a couch potato for the past few months, I renewed my gym membership at 24 Fitness.

Actually, the WeHo work-out hot spot, is engaging in a little false advertising.

The gym is not open twenty-four hours a day at this location.

Allegedly, the City Council was concerned that if the club was open throughout the night in gay gulch, that there would be a lot of sweaty-action going down in the steam room nightly, and endless cruising annoying residents in the upscale neighborhood adjacent to Beverly Hills.

So, the business license was granted with the provisio that the hours be shortened to avoid a trashy scandalous fall-out.

Over the years, the gym has gone through a number of incarnations.

When I first sauntered into WeHo way back in the late seventies, the Beverly Hills Health Club occupied the premises.

Locals may recall that during the week there quite a few fat jewish men frequented the unassuming membership-only club where they sought out a soothing massage and a healthy glow from the intense mid-day sun.

Then, the club changed hands a few times, before it became one of the flagships of the burgeoning 24 Hour Fitness chain.

During the Sports Connection phase - the locals affectinately dubbed the hot-to-trot work-out spot the "Sports Erection" - for obvious reasons.

For a short while, the Athletic Club (situated a few doors down the street) gave the thriving gym a run for their money.

However, when owner Peter Siderious skipped town - and left a trail of litigation behind him - it was back to business as usual (sans competition).

The eyesore has stood empty (a blight on the strip for a decade or so) since the uppity Queen left in a huff one day for parts unknown.

Hell hath no fury like a Queen scorned, eh?

24 Hour Fitness is a pretty safe bet when it comes to gyms, especially if you're not inclined to mortgage the family farm,  or put up your 1st child for security to get a decent work-out.

This past week, I signed up for a membership plan online with little fuss sor muss, for the paltry sum of $26.00 monthly (on a no-frills month-to-month contract).

A 1st and last payment on my credit card got me in the door that day!

In contrast, Gold's Gym is probably the worst bet, when you consider that once management gains access to your bank account they continue to debit fees long after you discontinued your membership!

There is a lot of snootniess and attitude in those environs, too.

After all, the high-tech decor (consisting of a smorgasboard of sensory delights) is geared towards pure ubiquitous vanity.

No wonder actors, models, and male escorts throng there.

Bally's (especially the outlet in Hollywood) is a low-class alternative off the trendy richter scale.

Apply for a pass to check out the locale first before you invest big bucks here.

For the most part, the clientele is sleazy, the staff poor trained, and the equipment out-of-date (or broken).

One of the best amenities at 24 Hour fitness is the large pool where many of the locals catch a few rays on the weekend amid a lot of splashy fanfare.

Dudes, there's also a lot of eye candy to take a gander at if you're footloose and fancy free, and - of course - on the make.

In addition, the steam room (though cruisy) is a great place to settle down, relax, and release the day's tensions with quiet unassuming ease.

OMG!

It's that time to perk up the pecs once again!

See 'ya there!

Starbucks...down on homeless! Nope, no compassion, just greed...

I was sipping a cup of piping-hot tea @ the Starbucks WeHo/24 Hour Fitness outlet when one of the barristas strolled over with a purpose and started to arrange four big leather easy-chairs in a "nook-like" setting.

I smiled.

"Cozy," I chuckled.

The pretty mid-twenties employee noted in a firm (but condescending tone of voice) that the Starbucks strategy was to psychologically "steer" guests who sauntered in the front door in the direction of the front counter & cashier so they wouldn't take a side route straight to the restroom.

I pointed out at this juncture that some patrons may have to relieve themselves.

So, of course, it was not only logical - but practical - that they may be inclined to head to the water closet first (limey term for head).

After all, what if they - as a Valley-girl might say:

"Like, really have-ta go".

A latte or specially-ordered cup of java takes a few seconds to conjure up - which means (perhaps tragically in some instances) that the poor soul have to cross their legs (and pray!) while they wait for the tasty beverage to appear at the take-out.

Then, after selecting a table and plunking down the Starbucks goodies, there would be a trot across the trendy cafe to the "John".

In that event, the beverage would have cooled off considerably by the time the patron was ready to stretch back and toss it back!

Of course, these youngsters aren't bright enough to figure that one out for themselves.

The neatly-attired personnel at Starbucks are trained to just Sell! Sell! Sell!

And now - exhibit their skills at giving a hefty heave-ho to the homeless - when they haplessly wander through the "unwelcome" door.

"They smell," she sniped - with what I thought for one sliver of a second was a pointed nod in my direction - as she moved on to carry out the rest of her perfunctory duties.

At this juncture, I surreptitiously sniffed my own "pits" (when no one was glancing in my direction) and did the old hand-cup gesture at my mouth (breathing out slowly) to verify my breath was not a dragon Meister, either.

In the final analysis?

No wonder the logo for the Seattle-based giant has become the symbol of greed!

Starbucks...innovations for faster service!

The Starbucks in West Hollywood, across from 24 Hour Fitness, is probably one of the busiest, most popular, cafes in the city.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, long lines are prone to snake through the eclectic outlet, as patrons patiently wait to move up in line and order their morning cup of steaming java.

Until recently, oft times there was a jumble of confusion, as the line spilled this way and that - but the crowd in Boys Town is so polite, generally - did it really matter if someone shoved ahead when a head was turned to cruise some sweet young thing?

Then, someone at Starbucks got a novel idea!

Management proceeded to install a couple of waist-high partitions through a section of Starbucks - to facilitate a sort-of runway - to guide the hordes gently into the service and cash areas.

Frankly, I thought I was the only one amused by this approach...surely the folly of it all had soared over the sleepy heads of the early morning gang as they sought to curb their cravings for caffeine to head off the crack-of-dawn blues.

Today, a delightful man in a natty suit, and fashionable tie, turned and smirked,

"Don't you like the way they've corralled us?"

Yeah, like a herd of cattle, we were heading off to slaughter - to snap up double lattes, breakfast sandwiches, the latest tunes from their music roster, aesthetically-pleasing designer mugs, high-tech coffee grinders - you name it!

Clever marketing, yeah!

But, the pharmacy down the street had a keen idea, too.

They etched some footprints on the polished tile floor, so the teaming masses could fathom where to queue up, wait their turn, and pay for their super mega-vitamins, trojans, metrosexual hair products, and the like.

One day, two customers were arguing over where to stand, at which point, the pharmacist thrust a forefinger to the direction of the floor to confirm that the line should follow the neat patterns of little feet below.

Yeah, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them toe the line!
