President Barack Obama...in the dog-house over nasty Tamale quip! 1st Lady annoyed!

Getting down 'n dirty with the troops earlier today back east obviously had a down-side.

Did some of the rough-house manners of the salty Marines rub off on the Commander-in-Chief?

For example, tonight - when President Obama was quizzed about his favorite snack food at a festive cinco de mayo celebration at the White House  - he was quick on-the-uptake (and put-down).

'Mexian food," he beamed, without hesitation.

Then, for some inexplicable reason, he was inspired to take a dig at his wife Michelle out-of-the-blue.

"Just try to get between a Tamale and Michelle," he quipped, to a shocked audience in attendance.

The 1st Lady obviously wasn't amused, judging by her body language.

In fact, if looks could kill, the Secret Service would have been dashing up to the podium to try to revive the President after the fatal blow took its deadly toll.

Something tells me the Prez ain't getting any nooky, tonight!

Barack will have to settle for the couch, a porno, and a hand-job - I guess.

Of course, he could order "out".

Give Charlie Sheen a call, Mr. President!

Just betcha the "machine" can hook 'ya up with a pricey babe made-to-order.

But, don't sniff any of the white stuff she offers up, okay?

Nevada...lawmakers seek enforcement of proper pronunciation! Las Vegas, please!

Theme Hotels in Nevada popular!

For a city that wails ad nauseam about the ailing economy, down revenues, and empty Hotel rooms - the Natives sure are downright fussy - when it comes to uttering up the names of their fair state and the glitzy desert oasis.

News anchors have been reporting this week that City Officials - and locals - are miffed at folks who traipse into town and persist in incorrectly mis-pronouncing the the name of the Silver State with a noticeable "h" sound tagged on at the end.

Nev-a-dah?

No way!

In fact, one politician - still angered by the President's swipe at the City of Las Vegas last year - seized on the opportunity to take a slap at Barack's better half.

In a brief segment on the news - a video of the 1st Lady allegedly mangling the pronunciation - was rustled up and broadcast to millions of viewers with the specific aim of making the Prez's hubbie - not only look "bad" - but give the impression that Michelle is poorly uneducated (because she is a product of a lower class of  U.S. "blacks").

No matter!
Government officials are so annoyed over the problem that they are prepared to introduce a law to dictate the proper pronunciation

OMG!

On the heels of the "Nevada" controversy, one newsie was quick to throw in his two cents worth, too.

"And, its Las Vegas - please - not Vegas."

I am originally from Toronto, and I always pronounce the Native "Indian" word correctly with a distinct "o" vowel sound on the tail end of the word.

However, it is quite common for Canucks who hail from Toronto "the good" to refer to hog town as "Toronta".

Do I get upset?

Heck, no!

I just chuckle at their lack of class.

For a gambling town, folks from Las Vegas, appear to have placed their bets on a losing proposition.

If they expect "out-siders" to comply with their silly demands, they're dreaming.

I intend to go on using the short form for "Vegas" for good reason.

On Twitter, for example, where the number of characters are limited.

In a nutshell, bottom line"

Residents of Las Vegas need to get real, especially in respect to this petty issue, which stinks to high heaven..

Diane Von Furstenberg...designs tote bag for Nancy Pelosi! UGLY fashion misstep!

Diane, stick to designer gowns like these!
(suitable for the 1st Lady)

When times are tough, the tough get going!

Especially in political circles when it comes to fundraising.

Nancy Pelosi is no slouch in that department.

In fact, Pelsoi - the Democrats' version of the folksy backwoods Queen (Sarah Palin) - has just reached out to fashion icon Diane Von Furstenberg to create a fashion accessory to kick off the political-social whirl with style.

"With everything Speaker Pelosi has done to move our country forward, I was more than happy to oblige," gushed Furstenbeg after unveiling a limited edition tote bag to be sold online to Democrats heading out on the campaign trail.

I interviewed Diane's husband - Prince Egon Von Furstenberg - years ago at the annual Men's Fashion Awards in Los Angeles.

Classy man!

Every dollar toward its purchase price will be used to support Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats "who are under increased attack by those who wish to take our country back to the policies of former President George W. Bush," the press release summed up.

The scuttlebutt has been negative in some chi-chi climbs around the political circuit.

"It's ugly," one fashion icon qupped in disgust.

"It's not even a great get," lamented an Internet surfer who wrinkled up their nose at the mere thought of lugging one around.

At a time when there is a cry all over the land about a lack of jobs and an ailing economy, critics are inclined to write the promotion off with disdain.

Jenny Crider, a spokesperson for the DCCC, remains optimistic.

"Diane von Furstenberg graciously designed a fun and functional canvas tote bag to celebrate Speaker Pelosi and women Members and candidates. The DCCC store has been inundated with requests for it."

The accessory sells for $65.00.

"If the tote bag's not your thing - we have plenty of pens, key chains, mugs or t-shirts - all made in America."

At long last, manufacturers are returng to America to stamp out product for the good old U of SA.

Will that be cash or I.O.U.?

America celebrates 4th of July...Lopez insults Obama! Kelly Clarkson bombs! Lionel Richie rocked!

Ford Theatre in 1860

Renee Fleming glorious at close of show!

An American Idol darling bombed at the top of the show, comic George Lopez insulted the President right out-of-the-gate, and a touching tribute to war heroes brought tears to the eyes.

In fact, the underlying current that swept the telecast along, appeared to guided by an invisible hand with an agenda in mind.

Was it just coincidence that a pretty African-American chanteuse belted out a Broadway tune about a colored woman’s plight, a war hero was singled out as a legal immigrant from Mexico who went on to fight for his new country once landed on these shores, and a celebrated Soprano warbled about the “truth marching on” (which turned out to be a great lead-in for the President’s parting speech to the Nation at the near-end of the hyped-up soft-shoe-show?).

Me thinks not.

Was Barack Obama simply an invited guest, or did the President orchestrate behind-the-scenes, to ensure the Democrat's message was presented in a neat-and-tidy package complete with ornate bow?

Unfortunately, "America's" (Obama's?) 4th of July celebration suffered a bumpy start, though.

A bland, non-charismatic host, caused viewers at home to utter up in disgust:

“Who the heck is this guy?”

But, it was the opening number by Kelly Clarkson, that triggered folks to grab for the remote.

The former American Idol contestant sashayed out in a overblown ballroom gown - too wide at the skirt and too-tightly-stretched over her pudgy frame - in the most unflattering way.

Uh-huh.

Clarkson looked more like a stuffed sausage than a dazzling Pop Star Diva.

In the wake of all the pressures of success, it appears that Clarkson is now eating her way into oblivion.

The tune she warbled (badly) - "Everyone’s got Something" - established (ironically) that was simply not the case with Kelly.

Bad taste persisted when George Lopez trotted out with that gnarled grin and proceeded to insult the President.

“I was asked if the President was real. I assured the person that he was, otherwise, he would have had his ears pinned back years ago.”

Dumbo smiled when an on-the-ball camera-man zoomed up for a close-up reaction, but I expect he was seething with rage inside.

Like Ronald Reagan before him, Obama  is a good actor (or expert at masking his feelings).

No more invites to the White House, just betcha.

Dick Van Dyke scurried out on stage at one point - as part of a tribute - and to celebrate the return of an all-time Broadway favorite (Mary Poppins) to the Broadway "boards".

Though the seasoned pro is highly respected, some shook their heads at the dated material.

Moi!

What’s the expression?

Old and grey.

Corny, too.

On occasion, the camera floated around the interior of the Ford Theatre, momentarily putting the spotlight on the Washington power-players in attendance.

One Supreme Court Justice - you know, the Latino woman - looked puffy and tired beyond her years.

For the most part, it appeared from this perch, that there were quite a few stodgy stuffy Washington movers-and-shakers trying to get their mugs on camera and in the limelight.

The 4th of July show creaked, was flat and old hat, not with it (for the most part).

There were a couple of highlights, though.

In one quaint segment on the history of 1st families in the White House, a well-spoken woman noted that over the years one hundred-and-fifty-four children resided in the Mansion.

And, with wit and charm, the hostess recalled some of their antics for the audience to appreciate.

For instance, on the heels of being gifted with a toy cannon, Lincoln’s children allegedly turned it on the President’s cabinet with explosive results.

One President’s children were known as the “White House Gang” because they got caught firing spitballs at portraits adorning the walls.

In one lively entertaining segment, Lionel Richie was warmly received as he performed one of his popular mega-hits of yesteryear (“All Night Long”).

At one point, Richie let loose, and began dancing a clapping on stage which inspired guests to copycat in the packed house below the footlights.

In fact, I spied a few stuffy political types letting loose, too!

No panties were hurled on stage, Tom-Jones-style, though.

“I see you want to dance,” the talented performer quipped in Michelle Obama’s direction.

The 1st Lady was dolled-up in a mauve designer gown and spectacular neck piece which sparkled and caught the light just right.

Barack obama was smartly attired in a formal dark suit.

Positively Presidential.

But, get this, Barack often responded to the music with a roll of the eyes and a rhythmic bobbing of  the head (as if he were stoned on a joint).

Soprano - Renee Fleming - stepped on stage and unfortunately chose to warble a tune that was all wrong for her professionally-trained voice.

Fleming came off like a pale version of Sarah Brightman.

However, she redeemed herself later with a spirited version of another tune that revved up the emotions of everyone in the ABC TV Special's sway.

Coincidentally, a contact of mine at her record company, just provided me with a copy of her new album for the purpose of a review.

The critique will follow.

At a solemn moment in the show, five men who valiantly earned the Medal of Honor, were singled out to represent all recipients of the prestigious group who have earned one over the years.

The light blue ribbon adorned with 13 stars is awarded to those who made supreme sacrifices beyond the call of duty while serving their country.

During this poignant touching presentation, General Colin Powell established his talent for public speaking.

What a stage presence, too!

The well-spoken Powell should be gainfully employed as a voice-over artist!

By the way, as each of the five Medal of Honor recipients were introduced to the audience, the President stood at attention and saluted each military man with utmost respect and admiration.

A prolonged standing ovation persisted and I expect there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

After Fleming’s rousing rendition of “Glory Glory Hallelujah”, the President took the stage.

Natch!

Told ‘ya he wasn’t an innocent by-stander.

Barack Obama noted that he was thrilled with the spectacular evening.

He thanked all the “voices” and “honored guests” who helped make the night such a success.

With a nod to the "Medal of Honor" fraternity in attendance he summed up.

“Heroism, that is what this Nation is all about.”

Right on cue, he closed out the hour show with a heartfelt message.

“God Bless you and America.”

Amen!

Michelle Obama...dining @ Bellagio! Prevention of obesity in Red Rock...

1st Lady Michelle Obama was spied dining at Sensi at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas the other night.

A day or so earlier, Mrs. Obama was a hop-and-a-skip down the highway at Red Rock, promoting outdoor health regimens to curb obesity in children.

Michelle Obama was greeted by Senator Reid who was on hand to participate in the high-profile event.

Although Michelle Obama’s appearance was categorized as an "Official" event (God forbid anyone should get the idea the 1st lady was there to support - or endorse - the Senator on a campaign trail).

Mrs. Obama exhibited good manners when she chose to lift up Reid by the bootstraps.

Mrs. Obama made a point of noting that Senator Reid was a key member of her husband’s “team” and vital to the Democratic party agenda.

“He’s been a tremendous asset - not just to my husband - but to the country and to all the kids,” she crowed.

There were about 100 parents, teachers, and government workers in attendance.

That afternoon at Red Rock, Senator Reid touted the new health care law and touched lightly on its preventive measures.

“We must do something to stop and prevent disease before it starts.”

“Prevention hasn’t got the attention it deserves,” the Senator continued, “but is the key to bringing down health care costs.”

At this juncture, the rag-tag event in the exotic desert, became a sort-of mutual admiration society right before everyone’s eyes.

“The 1st lady’s program to fight child obesity is a good example and the message she’s trying to send is for Americans to get more exercise and eat better,” Reid added.

On the press junket to Red Rock, Michelle Obama launched her program “Let’s Move! outside” which focuses on getting children to facilitate recreational parks and areas more.

On Michelle’s cue, the 18 children strong, were invited to participate in a routine of stretching exercises (to get limber?) - at which point at the 1st Lady’s direction - the rambuctious kids scrambled up a rock.

Michelle, clearly not in the appropriate attire for strenuous physical activity, stayed below to assist Senator Reid lift up children, when needed.

Although one child surprised Mrs. Obama when she squealed that she didn’t need help, at least there weren’t any unexpected questions from wise young ones (at the behest of their parents?) about controversial issues such as illegals, deportation, the need to hide behind rocks, and the like.

I suppose this group was thoroughly screened and prepped since the event went off without a hitch for the most part.

Next time out, I anticipate that Mrs. Obama will be less fashion-conscious (she has been on my Best-dressed woman's list, after all) - and more fitness-oriented in her approach in the future - to avoid potentially embarrassing wardrobe snafus brought on by a slight physical trip-up or a gust of desert wind blowing in off the Mojave unexpectedly.

Michelle Obama...invites "Citizens Medal" nominees!

In an e-mail communication this morning, Michelle Obama noted that the President normally hand-picks worthy candidates to be given the nod for a Citizens Award (which is the second highest honor for an American to receive).

In choosing such a candidate, the President keeps a keen eye toward exemplary deeds of service to the country or a fellow citizen.

Michelle Obama chose the occasion to inform me that this year the process will include nominees chosen by - we, the people - of the United State (home of the free).

If someone in this great Nation has inspired you - or likewise - selflessly dedicated themselves to a service that has touched your life (or the lives of others) you are encouraged to nominate that individual for the Citizens Award.

Past winners of this prestigious honor have included Colin Powell, politician Bob Dole and Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks (as well as everyday heroes like Oseola McCarty who left her entire life savings to establish a scholarship for students in need)

According to Michelle Obama, the bar has been set quite high; subsequently, only a worthy few will receive a Citizens Award.

Here is a sampling of the special qualities President Obama considers a prerequisite:

*People who demonstrated a commitment to service in the community
*People who helped their country or Citizens by way of great deeds
*People whose service inspired & sustained an impact

Since a multitude of Americans work every day to serve others, the 1st Lady has noted that this year's Citizens Medal, will specifically honor those who have shown exemplary service to help others outside of their normal jobs.

With that in mind, President Barack Obama and the 1st Lady invite U.S. Citizens to take a moment to nominate a hero in their mind's eyes or help honor an individual who has been unwavering in their commitment to service in the community-at-large.

White House Nomination Process

*Nominations are open for one week
*Nominations will be reviewed by White House staff
*Nominations will be sent to the President for a final decision
*Recipients will receive awards in a ceremony at the White House

Good luck!

Michelle Obama...a heartfelt message from the 1st Lady! Giving...

Michelle has a dream!
(to end hunger)

Shortly after I took a lunch break a few moments ago, I returned to the computer to double-check my e-mail before friends, family, and business associates begin to proceed with their plans for the Thanksgiving Holiday - which, for many - includes out-of-town travel to visit with loved ones.

Imagine my surprise (and delight) to receive a heartfelt message from 1st Lady Michelle Obama!

While other citizens around the country are selfishly thinking of themselves, Michelle has been busy getting out a somewhat persuasive message to Americans around the country, on the subject of giving in this great hour of need for so many across the heartland.

Bless her heart!

Here is what the gracious 1st Lady wrote verbatim:

On Wed, 11/25/09, First Lady Michelle Obama wrote:

From: First Lady Michelle Obama

Subject: Giving Thanks

To: julian@julianayrs.com

Date: Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 1:09 PM

Tomorrow, many of us will gather around the table with family and friends to give thanks over a feast of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy - and let’s not forget pumpkin pie!

But for some in this country, the feast will not be as bountiful.

In fact, it won’t be much of a feast at all.

Hunger is on the rise in America - hitting its highest levels in nearly 15 years.

A recent report released by the USDA reveals that in 2008 an estimated 1.1 million children were living in households that experienced hunger multiple times over the past year.

To combat hunger this winter, we’re launching, in coordination with the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor initiative - a program that empowers you with all the resources you need to mobilize against the hunger crisis in your community. Learn how you can get started today:

Barack and I are committed to doing all we can to end hunger by making food programs more accessible to eligible families.

But government can only do so much - it will take all of us working together to put an end to hunger in America.

That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to get involved at Serve.gov.

Find local volunteer opportunities like delivering meals to homebound seniors, offering your professional skills at a food pantry, or planting a community garden and sharing produce with your neighbors.

You can also create your own volunteer opportunity using our anti-hunger toolkit.

This holiday season let’s recommit to serving our communities and working together to feed American families.

Get started giving back today.

Thank you,

Michelle

United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor

Posted by Nicola Goren on November 25, 2009 at 02:53 PM EST

As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, let us also pause and acknowledge that many of our neighbors are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table.

The President and the First Lady are calling on all of us to come together to solve hunger in our communities.

In this spirit, the Corporation for National and Community Service in coordination with the White House and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is launching the United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor initiative. The new initiative raises awareness of hunger issues and equips Americans with the resources to mobilize against the hunger crisis.

Here’s what you can do to get started fighting hunger today:

Find an opportunity to serve by using the keyword "hunger" in our "Find a Volunteer Opportunity" search engine on Serve.gov

Create your own service project using our anti-hunger toolkit.

Raise awareness & learn more about ending hunger in America.

Barack Obama...lay off the Missus!

No nookie tonight...

This past week, Barack Obama grumbled to whoever would listen, that the press has been quite tough on his life partner, Michelle.

"Lay off the wife," was his basic war cry.

Well, Barack, the missus is part 'n parcel of it all.

Once the finicky voters gave you the once-over (and a nod to throw up your feet on the desk in the Oval Office) the spotlight turned on your - um - better half?

Americans need to know Michelle can pass the muster, so-to-speak.

We know she's no "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis" - pill box hat or not - but the former Ms. Bouvier set a pretty high bar, 'ya know?

John Kerry probably lost the election because of his hubby.

Americans just weren't ready to warm up to the idea of a condiment heiress strolling down the hallowed halls of the White House barefoot after midnight swilling a glass of expensive Chablis.

Even if they do like ketchup on their potatoes!

Barack, a piece of advice...

If Michelle perfects the image of the "dutiful" mate, she'll manage to pass the smell test.

At that juncture, Americans may conveniently forget the unsavory remarks about being - "proud of being an American for the first time" - and let the two of you get on with the journey (wherever it may lead) in life!

On the issue of campaign behavior, Eleanor Roosevelt once said,

"Always be on time. Do as little talking as humanly possible. Lean back in the parade car so everybody can see the president."

Is it Barack's time?

Bill Clinton, Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama...who would make best 1st Lady?

Bill's conservative look for State functions...

I just about laughed my socks off when I spied a poll on the Zimbio web site a few minutes ago.

Voters have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the spouse of the presidential candidate they figure to be the best potential 1st Lady.

There, amid the photos of Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain, is a flattering pic of Slick Willy looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed! Emphasis on tail.

Currently Bill is in the lead with 44% of the vote. Meanwhile, Cindy is in 2nd place with 34%, as Michelle trails valiantly behind with 22%.

But, the night is young!

Say now, perhaps this is Bill's golden opportunity to reveal a bit of his feminine side to the American voters.

He may be a better man for it.

In a swirl of fashion fantasy, I envision the poser in a simple - yet elegant - chic strapless number.

Fire-engine red, don't you think?

That tart!

Don't forget to give a good tuck here and there, Bill.

We don't want any sly Jack-in-the-box popping out unexpectedly now, do we?

Stand up and be heard folks. Surf over to zimbio now.

May the best woman - um - womanizer, win!
