Las Vegas...$3.00 taxi surcharge for debit cards! Rickshaw, anyone?

Seasoned travellers who have touched down in the desert oasis for a vacation - or a business trip - are keen to the fact the gambling mecca is a sprawling Metropolis that stretches for miles in all directions.

Subsequently, hiking around on foot - especially when the tropical paradise is suffering through a sizzling-hot heatwave soaring into the three digits - is out-of-the-question!

For starters, practical tourists may be inclined to rent an economy-size vehicle (some may go hog wild and choose to tool around in a candy-apple red Ferrari and pay through the nose for the thrill-ride) or simply flag what used-to-be a moderately-priced cab.

'Til recently, that is!

The City just granted a request by Frias Transportation to allow a surcharge in the sum of $3.00 every time a rider presents plastic to pay for their fare - which has raised the stakes - considerably.

So, budget-minded folks may now opt to spring for a day pass  on the "Deuce" ($7.00 for 24 hours) which is a bus provided by the City of Las Vegas which zips up and down the strip hourly.

Unfortunately, because the double-decker bus was poorly-designed (passengers often bump their heads when they go to-and-from their seats because of low ceilings or knock their knees because each nook is too small for the four passengers which it was crafted to accommodate) folks who don't cater to the idea of rubbing shoulders with strangers may be forced to look elsewhere.

How about a scooter?

A trendy little sucker may be rented for $49.00 a day.

Too pricey?

Rickshaw, anyone?

Sahara Hotel & Casino...Las Vegas gambling joint to shut-down! Consumer alert warning!

The brief news snippet in the morning paper - reporting that the Sahara Hotel & Casino was closing its once-celebrated doors - didn't surprise me one iota!

Tattler readers may recall that I posted a consumer alert about the deceptive business practices at the Hotel last year, with the dire warning that they book lodgings elsewhere, to gurantee a fun-filled vacation frolic in the desert oasis free of headaches.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/09/las-vegassahara-fails-to-disclose-fees.html

Film buffs will recall that in its glory days, producers for the successful feature - Ocean's Eleven - shot on location in the exotic environs of the Morocccan-themed resort situated at the end of the main strip in glitzy Las Vegas.

SBE Chief Executive officer Sam Nazarian (a Los Angeles-based hospitality and entertainment group and Stockbridge) snapped up the Sahara in 2007 and vowed to invigorate the sagging investment property.

But now, it appears that the ailing Hotel will slip into obscurity when it is shut down in May.

No doubt, the ghosts of the rack pack (Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr.) will continue to haunt the premises 'til then.

Poor quality food, over-priced rooms - and a failure to keep up with the heartbeat of "Sin City" - spelled doom (as I predicted many moons ago).

I trust the place will be imploded, sit empty for a year or two, or be revamped by ambitious optimistic investors with money to burn somewhere down the long-and-winding road.

Buffalo Bill's...Primm Valley spa! Amusement Park! Desert golf oasis...

Buffalo Bill’s is my kind of place!

Last night, I suffered a serious case of the munchies, so I trundled down to the Casino at about two in the morning.

At the bar, I was able to pluck up a scrumptious hot dog and delicious Margarita for a paltry two bucks.

Today, I won four bucks on a fifteen cent (3 line bet), which signaled a turn in my luck!

Now, if I fall in love with a tall dark (or blond) stranger, I’ll be ready to cash in my chips and ride off into the sunset!

Buffalo Bill’s is a desert oasis in Pimm Valley (about thirty miles outside Las Vegas).

The low-key resort is well-suited for folks who pine to catch a few rays in the desert, play a round of golf, and relax in a spa for a few hours without breaking the bank.

Mid-week rates are surprisingly affordable at $19.95 nightly.

If you facilitate a coupon, you’ll rustle up yourself a $20 food credit at one of the restaurants in the Hotel, too.

When I booked a suite for a floor higher-up, I was completely oblivious to the fact, that I was in for a surprise of the amusement kind.

As I relaxed on my comfy bed watching the nightly news - whoosh! - a pack of thrill-seekers roared by about six feet from my room - on an amusement park ride that circles the entire Western-style Hotel fascade.

The first time it occurred, my heart leapt out of my chest!

A touch of Connie Island?

You bet.

But, it’s the special touches that won me over at Buffalo Bill's.

I love the gold ice bucket, for instance.

And, the appealing landscape reproductions hanging on the wall, in my spacious aesthetically-appealing suite.

Uh-huh!

The Primm Valley resort is a lovely respite from it all.

Rates go up on the weekends, so take note.

See ‘ya there!

Twitter...Caesar's Palace following moi! What, me a whale?

Golly, one of my favorite luxury Casinos in Las Vegas in now following me on Twitter!

And, I'm not even a "whale".

What would the powers-that-be on high think if they discovered that I've been plying my coins away in their lowly penny slot machines?

Just betcha, I'd get the heave-ho.

Notwithstanding, personally I feel right at home whenever I stroll through Caesar's Palace, and for good reason.

Avid readers of my blog may recall that in a previous post, I noted I may have been Julian 1st (Flavius Claudius) in a past life.

So, whenever I step into the Forum it's kind-of-like a flash of deja vu, if you get my drift!

More importantly, now that I'm on management's radar, maybe I'll be able to rustle up some front-row seats to a dynamite show or weasel my way into an elegant suite @ rock-bottom prices!

Hail Caesar!

Las Vegas...Battle of the Bands! Rock 'n Roll at dawn, dudes...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

When I tossed open the curtain, and slid the window open wide bright and early this morning in my Hotel room, I was hit with a blast of rock 'n roll!

They start early in Vegas, don't they?

After showering, I took the elevator downstairs, and headed off for a morning cup of java.

Heh!

Was that Alice Cooper screaming the last few strains of the band's celebrated hit - "School's Out" - on the Freemont Street stage?

Shucks, missed capturing the classic little number on video.

But, lady luck was on my side.

"Are we allowed to do another song, "Alice" asked the stage manager in charge of the early morning riser.

Once that tidbit of dialogue fell on my ears, I snatched up my new HD Video Recorder just in time to catch an encore number in which "Alice" proceeded to tear off the head of a doll.

The truth of the matter?

The performance wasn't quite up to par.

Did "Alice" have a rough night, or what?

You got it!

Turns out, the musicians on stage were a Tribute Band!

The impromptu performance (and the one that followed that featured a Bon Jovi look-a-like) was a special promotion for the - "Battle of the Bands" (May 13th) - being taped for Fox News.

The teaser was being whipped up to throw the spotlight on a myriad of talented young musicians playing the strip in honky-tonks, casinos, and Hotel lounges around "sin" city in search of the elusive big break.

Later in the week, I'll upload the video, and you can decide for yourself if it was a tribute or a travesty!
