62nd Annual Emmy Awards...Glee nabs 19 nominations! Jimmy Fallon to host...

Am I pretty enough?

Officials in charge of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards announced bright-and-early today that quirky "Glee" earned 19 Emmy nominations - then - moved on to toss the spotlight on a roster of shows that also rustled up deserving nods for excellence in the Television medium.

"The Pacific" - an  HBO miniseries about Marines in World War II's Pacific theater - topped all candidates in-the-running with 24 nominations.

"The Good Wife" - starring Julianna Margulies - nabbed kudos for best drama and best actress in a drama series.

"Modern Family" (best comedy series) snapped up 14 nominations.

To no one's surprise - "Friday Night Lights" cast (Kyle Chandler & Connie Britton) earned acting nods for their work on the much-touted series.

A perennial favorite - "Saturday Night Live" (in its 35th season) - earned 12 nods.

The hilarious late-night bill-of-fare still has strong legs, eh?

NBC must have been kicking themselves when it was announced that Conan O'Brien's "Tonight Show" was nominated for best variety, music or comedy series.

Curiously, Jay Leno and David Letterman were shut out of the category.

Dirty show-biz politics behind-the-scenes playing a role here?

"Lost" - though cancelled - managed to still earn a nom for best drama series and best actor in a drama (Matthew Fox).

Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson got supporting-lead nods.

"Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Mad Men" and "True Blood" won approval in the best drama category.

In total - "Mad Men" - racked up a stunning 17 nominations.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Nurse Jackie," "The Office" and "30 Rock",  "Glee" and "Modern Family" were named best comedy series nominees.

"Monk"  picked up a comedy series best actor nomination for star Tony Shalhoub.

"The Amazing Race" - which has won the best reality competition Emmy since the category was first introduced years ago - was lumped in with other nominees once again alongside "American Idol," "Dancing With the Stars," "Project Runway" and "Top Chef".

Two Made-for-TV movies - "Temple Grandin" and "You Don't Know Jack" - ended up in the spotlight as well.

Claire Danes got a notice for her role in "Temple Grandin".

Al Pacino was lauded for his portrayal of Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
 (You Don't Know Jack)

HBO led the network pack with 101 nominations.

ABC nudged in the lead with 63 nods in the broadcast TV arena.

Emmy fans are looking forward to a high-profile celebration with Jimmy Fallon at the helm on August 29th (NBC) which will be telecast live from the Nokia center in downtown Los Angeles.

See 'ya there!

Miley Cyrus...star's credibility problems & The Last Song! Stolen chickens...

Miley Cyrus has been making the rounds of talk shows this past week - to tout her new release (The Last Song) - which is being released today (March 31st) in tandem with her feature film release.

After catching a couple of the chats she engaged in with high-profile talk-show hosts over the past week - on the tonight show and the today show respectively - it appears that Ms. Cyrus has a nasty habit of fibbing (embellishing the facts to romanticize her life a tad) or in the conveninet alternative just has a foggy memory!

Maybe, she's just living in a fantasy world, starring a delusional Miley Cyrus?

For example, after a chat with a teen-bopper rag, other media hounds were inclined to spread the juicy scuttlebutt she generated about the casting of current boy-toy Liam Hemsworth  in the lead role opposite Miley.

With a lot of fanfare, she boasted that she gave the nod,  because "he showed he was a gentleman when he opened the door for her one day."

The juicy tidibt triggered a surge in good manners 'round Tinsel Town with a posse of actors keen on currying favor with someone with clout to land 'em a part (even if it meant flirting with a spoiled self-centered star with some kooky notions about life
).

And, the presses spilled ink all over kingdom cum - and the internet, too - about the infectious  puppy love blossoming in their midst.

Then, last night, Miley twisted and distorted the facts a bit.

For example, when Jimmy Kimmel attempted to confirm how Liam came to land the romantic lead in the film, she suddenly blurted out that it was her mother who was actually responsible for the casting.

"She had headshots of three actors on the kitchen table.  But, she kept staring at Liam's photograph for hours."

Looks like Mom had the hots for Liam, first.

In fact, Miley confessed she wasn't that keen on him, initially.

Hope they're sharing the spoils of their studly find, at least!!

So much for the fairy tale meeting, and her little white lies, spread out over a week rife with promotional burps.

Needless to say, her credibility was "blown" in this corner of the Universe.

At that juncture in Kimmel's  interview, I found it difficult to take her at her word, when she ran rampant at the frothy mouth about this 'n that throughout the rest of the gab fest.

Did she really steal a few chickens from an unsuspecting farmer in California?

And, if we're to put any stock in what amounts to a tall tale - in my estimation - she would have us believe that her and Dad (Billy Ray Cyrus)  smuggled the chicks into the passenger area of the airplane by simply stretching the truth.

"These are special chickens," they assured the other passengers, who wondered aloud why they weren't below in "cargo" where all of God's other lowly creatures were stowed (cats, dogs).

As to the ratty Willie Nelson Doll she hauled around everywhere when she was a tot?

A fan took some publicity photos for posterity's sake and now they have been rustled up to haunt the young starlett (who must feel like a total fool right about now).
And, how was your day?

Miley needs shower after stink she's caused with media!

Elijah Wood...hobbits "Lords of Surf"? Actor has beard...

Elijah's face fuzz dual purpose?

When the diminuitive Elijah Wood guested on the Tonight Show last night, Conan  was quite surprised to hear that the "hobbits" remained in touch.

"In fact, just recently all of us headed off to the beach for a day of surfing," the wide-eyed actor noted to the rapt audience hanging on every word.

Apparently, Orlando Bloom (he portrayed an Elf) was in tow, too.

Which begs the question.

Will there be a sequel to the mega-hit franchise titled:

"The Lords of Surf"?

Wood, who currently sports a ubiquitous neatly-trimmed beard (which overpowers his normally-delicate facial features) also joked about the fact that he is often confused with fellow thespian Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.

One male fan dashed up on one occasion, for example, and gushed over his alleged performance on stage in the hit play "Equus".

"He thinks he saw me naked on stage," the good-humored star laughed.

In that event, one has to wonder, would Wood be flattered about the mix-up?

Only the little hobbit knows for sure (and those he's bedded, of course!).

The Great Buck Howard...a laugh riot! But, Tom Hanks drags the film down...

For me - "The Great Buck Howard" - is hard to knock in many respects.

Well, when it comes to John Malkovich, for sure!

The seasoned pro is always a delight to watch in any role he chooses to inhabit - and in this instant case - he has nudged his way into the very heartbeat of the character hands down.

One mannerism nagged the he** out of me, though, by the time the credits rolled.

An over-the-top heart-warming handshake Buck Howard (played by Malkovich to near perfection) foisted on every character he crossed paths with in the well-written comedy wore a little thin quick as a wink.

In a nutshell, the poignant tale is about a once-famous mentalist (no, the artist is not a mere magician) who connives to worm his way into the big time once again before the elusive opportunity for a last gasp at the brass ring slips away forever.

A young man, bored with law school and pining to find is way in the great scheme of things, answers an ad one day - and before you can pull a rabbit out of a hat - the naive lad is gainfully employed as a road manager for the slightly eccentric stage performer who is not only a stickler for details - but above all else - a precise routine that doesn't play havoc with his sly game plan.

The new hire is likable enough, but most certainly a little wet behind the ears; in fact, it's written all over his cherubic face.

The actor (played by Colin Hanks) isn't your typical pretty boy lead turned out by one of the majors to test the waters.

As a matter of fact, he's average-looking, but in an appealing - "grows on 'ya" - kind of way.

When we were teens on-the-make oft swayed by raging hormones, we'd often rate a less attractive date by the number of beers you'd have to down before you'd hop into the sack with 'em.

In this instant case, that yardstick definitely applies to Buck's chief cook and bottle-washer.

For his big comeback, Buck Howard zeroes in on Cincinnati (cause they like him there) where he anticipates a stunning "effect" (he gets angry when his sleight-of-hand is referred to as a mere magic trick) he has just conjured from the depths of his psyche will nab him National attention and summarily catapult him back into the limelight on the Tonight Show.

That does happen, but in a round-about poignant way.

In a running gag throughout the film, the master of illusion boasts ad nauseam that he appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson sixty-one times.

In contrast, Howard has his knives out for Jay Leno, who hasn't even tossed a crumb his way.

About half-way through the fast-paced farce, Howard appears to go through some kind of epiphany, which ultimately transforms the aging trickster into a genuine old soul who at long last finds peace in his personal and professional life.

Along the way, Hank's character wrestles with his own demons, and ends up signalling by the closing act that - he, too - will come out alright.

One of the few scenes that didn't gel for me occurred at a pivotal point in the film when the actor's real-life father - Tom Hanks - sauntered into the picture and was paired in a scene with son Colin which I found downright distracting.

When the audience is forced to watch histrionics go down between the two, they can't help but compare Tom's finely-honed talent with that of his scene partner, marvel at how similar the thespians physical characteristics are, and so forth and so on.

Big mistake!

It wasn't until Tom disappeared into the woodwork that the story got back on track.

I expect that Mr. Hanks (senior) has to be faulted for that poor judgment call, since he took on the mantle of producer, as well.

To ensure that sonny boy got the part?

There's nothing worse than nepotism in Hollywood, except for the casting couch, of course.

There didn't appear to be any hint of incest here, so I rest my case.

"The Great Buck Howard" is not great, but most certainly, near great.

While eliciting wild guffaws from a captive audience, "Buck" manages to make a subtle statement about the vagaries of fame, the lack of manners in our "me"-oriented society, and a keen insight into the ugly underbelly of the human condition in America today.

I say, two thumbs up!

Barack Obama...Vons asking for donations to Special Olympics!

In line at Vons supermarket yesterday, a cashier asked me if I'd like to make a donation to the Special Olympics.

When I turned my head to a shopper next to me with an expression of disbelief on my face (in view of the Obama boo-boo which occurred on the Tonight Show Thursday Night) their reaction was the same!

Yeah, their jaw dropped, too.

A coincidence?

Or, was Vons seizing the day and playing on public sympathy to rustle up funds?

"Not today," I responded politely. "But, I expect Obama may want to."

"Right," the hefty amazon woman muttered almost under her breath, as my change fell into the coin box in front of me.

Personally, I hate being taxed at the check-out when I shop for groceries, no matter how worthy the cause.

And, how was your day?

Gay Marriage...California Supreme Court denies "stay". Jay Leno to preside over mass ceremony June 17th.

Earlier today, with little ceremony, pomp or circumstance, the California Supreme Court denied a request for a "stay" of its ruling lifting the "ban" on gay marriage.

In a 4-3 ruling, the Justices stood by their controversial decision legalizing same-sex marriage in California and in the process a hurdle was straddled for gay couples to start tying the knot this month.

In fact, I just received word from a fellow "blogger" that on the heels of the news Jay Leno agreed to act as a Master of Ceremonies to preside over 250 Gay Weddings slated for June 17th, 2008.

Or am I being punked by you-know-who?

However, news reports are filtering in this afternoon that Jay definitely intends to make an appearance tomorrow night at "The Abbey" - one of West Hollywood's trendiest "it" bars - for a gay marriage celebration alongside Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight. (happy - um - gay).

There has been some speculation that it is Leno's good-guy gay attempt to make ammends to the LGBT community for what they deemed inappropriate behavior on the Tonight Show a short while ago.

The popular night-time talk show host cum-car-enthusiast sparked outrage among gay rights groups when he asked actor Ryan Phillippe to give him his "gayest look" during an interview.

Ouch!

Let's move on...

If you recall from a post a couple of days ago, this blog reported that Conservative religious groups previously asked the California Supreme Court to "stay" its order allowing state and local officials to start issuing wedding licenses mid-June until the issue could be voted on in a fall election.

In fact, the bold-faced efforts of those anti-gay-marriage "task forces" proved to be successful in recent days. Shortly after the initial ruling was handed down - in a wink - organizers snapped up enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot.

If the initiative passes muster in the fall it would overrule the court's decision by amending the state constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman.

In spite of the fact an attorney strenuously argued that failure to grant the "stay" would result in great chaos across the nation, the Justices stuck by their gavels.

In fact - the four justices who rendered the decision today - were part 'n parcel of a majority opinion that found withholding marriage from same-sex couples constituted discrimination in the initial ruling.

In spite of the fact the hold-out dissenters on the bench thought a hearing on whether the stay should be granted was warranted, their pleas fell on deaf ears in the final hours.

As is usually the case in such high-profile court rulings, the majority did not elaborate on its reasons for denying the stay.

The one-page order saying its original ruling on marriage will stand and be final at 5 p.m. on June 16th will obviously become a treasured historical document for many.

David Beckham...sexy underwear ad, what does it mean? Emporio Armani!

When he appeared on Jay Leno's show, David Beckham chuckled that after his new underwear ad appeared full throttle in the media, his Mother knocked him up (English term for calling someone on the telephone, dudes!) and exclaimed somewhat incredulously,

"Whatever were you thinking?"

I'd like to know, too. The ad is a curiosity, to say the least.

I mean, why the heck is he in a prone position in bed with his pants pulled down, with sheets turned wide aside, staring at the crotch of his skivvies?

Did he pass out the night before, drunk as a skunk? Now, come dawn, is he slippin' them off to relax in his comfy bed?

But, that scenario doesn't make sense. After all, he's staring at his crotch, isn't he?

Well, maybe he's into himself, a tad. Perchance, the sight of the bulge in his undies will get the lad aroused, so he can facilitate the nasty deed? You know, whack it a little, 'til Posh breezes in from a shopping spree?

In another still from the series, Becks is turned to camera.

Ah now, the package looks more inviting - chock full - if you know what I mean.

I wonder if he had a fluffer on the photo shoot.

Curiously, in a World Entertainment news article recently, film producer Judd Apatow made a startling revelation about male genitalia,

"America fears the penis, and that's something I'm going to help them get over."

Apatow wants to feature more male frontal nudity in movies, for instance, to overcome the stigma.

Maybe, David Beckham will rise to the occasion, too.

I mean, how long are you gonna tease us with come hither looks, Becks, before 'ya whip it out?

Do tell!

NBC...x-rated captions! What kind of shot?

Ever read those close captions that appear at the bottom of your new-fangled plasma TV?

Well, for some inexplicable reason, my focus turned away from the images the other night (some silly bozo must have sauntered onto the screen and distracted me for a second or two) and I noticed something was amiss...

Now and then, the translation was inclined to get twisted and mangled; subsequently, the end results were oftentimes hilarious - if not downright - disastrous.

For instance, when Dave Letterman announced that John Edwards would be appearing on the show the following evening, the Democrat's "John Hancock" was translated as "Swron Edwards". Maybe, the minions at NBC, were referring to his feminine side?

Guess not, because the glitches persisted.

On Jay Leno - the word "Okay" - was transformed into "Oh, Goldy". Jay's deep passionate feelings about a guest, slipped out, perhaps?

The Patriots were hailed as the "Theatriots" (in reference to the Superbowl's wild and wholly beer busts?), while the ever-present term on voters minds these days - the word "politics" - was transformed into a shorter form (for simplicity sake, I guess) to "polics". Maybe the producers were shooting for colonics?

But the one to beat the band (the "boys in the band", no doubt) was the one that made the hysterical reference to a "rim shot".

If you don't know what "rimming" is - just ask any gay man - and he'll enlighten you in graphic detail, no doubt.

I wonder, is some gremlin playing tricks on the late-night talk show hosts, or is the slip-up attributed to faulty translator oversight?

On the plus side, if you get bored with the show, you can always pretend you're Scientologist - Tom Cruise - and craft some clever phrases to go along with the mis-caps.

Now that's, risky business!

Mitt Romney...Jay Leno gives lip service!

After Romney's altercation with a reporter in recent days, a newspaper reported on the brawl of words, and captioned the article, "Romney loses his cool".

On the heels of the momentous event, Jay Leno proceeded to invite the presidential candidate on the late-night forum, to lick his wounds and tell his side of things.

Jay is always on top of these International incidents!

In a nutshell, a heckler in the press corp took umbrage over Mitt Romney's assertions that there wasn't any lobbyist "running his campaign". After all, the writer was under the distinct impression that a lobbyist was, in fact, working in the Republican camp.

It was all a question of semantics, really.

"He advises me, he doesn't run my campaign," Romney retorted, as politely as possible under the circumstances; at which point, the two bantered back and forth like two spoiled brats sparring in the school yard at recess.

Someone was splitting hairs!

Here is the smell test: the adviser didn't inhale, did he?

Exasperated by the reluctance of the rude reporter to back-down, the presidential candidate reiterated the facts. When the reporter refused to let up, Romney finally hit his boiling point and lamented, "Listen to my lips".

Mitt, the correct presidential phrase is, "read my lips"...

Charles De Gaulle once said,

"Since a politician never believes what he says, he is quite surprised to be taken at his word."

Ron Paul...snubbed by Fox TV, why? Dangerous views!

Well, jovial Ron Paul - with all the bedside manner of a country doctor - has been poppin' up on the boob tube, here and there, over the past couple of days expounding his - um - views.

On the Tonight Show the other night, Jay noted that the reason he invited Paul on as a guest, was due to an incident which occurred in recent days.

"Seems to me, you should be kicking some a**," Leno joked.

Of course, as Joe Public is undoubtedly aware, Fox TV snubbed Mr. Paul when they refused to allow him to participate in the Republican debates this past weekend.

An irate caller, on a popular talk show angrily lamented, "...it's the fault of the mainstream media. They always ignore Mr. Paul."

I'll admit, few outlets reported the news of the rejection at Fox, in spite of the fact it was newsworthy.

So, protesters gathered outside Fox, to stand by their man.

"Fox said it was because the table wasn't big enough," one angry supported snarled, then he gave a look into the camera, as if to say, "...and, I was born yesterday."

Surely, if Fox was unable to afford adequate furnishings for the debate, Mr. Paul and his generous supporters would have coughed up some dough for a custom-made conference table, capable of accommodating all the candidates interested in participating.

When Leno asked - "Why the rejection?" - at first, Mr. Paul shrugged.

Heh, the man's a gentleman; it's doubtful he'd sling mud, right?

With a little coaxing and cajoling from Leno, he relented - alleging in the final analysis - that it was because his views opposed "theirs".

"They're supporting another party," he grinned, with a wink to the audience.

Well, at this juncture, I guess it's time for me to step up to the plate!

This past summer, I penned a blog, which was featured on a Fox TV Web site for the filmmakers' TV reality show, "On the Lot".

Daily, I took potshots at all the candidates; after all, each was fair game to me.

In spite of my vitriolic barbs, aimed at their candidates, no "giant hand" ever stretched down from on high at the corporate offices to silence me, nor was there any attempt by management at the TV Station, to throw a monkey-wrench into my blog postings, or censor my material.

Who knows, maybe Rupert Murdoch just likes me?

Some argue that Fox rejected Paul because his views are too controversial, too dangerous. Is that it, then?

Well, he does allege the "Shaw of Iran" was put into power by the CIA.

And, the underdog candidate argues that the reason terrorists are engaging in their violent, despicable acts, is easy to fathom. Huh?

In sum, Paul takes the simplistic position that, "Terrorists don't like the U.S. occupying their country." That's why they engage in terrorist acts, he alleges.

"Would the citizens of the United States like it if their country was occupied?"

Good point.

But, his reasoning may be off the mark.

After all, I recall that Osama bin Laden has criticized the North American ethic, and also expressed his distaste for "consumer" consciousness and its excesses.

And, there is the issue of Allah.

I am inclined to concur from his stance, the very thought of our existence, has rankled bin Laden and his gang of extremists no end.

I am willing to bet that bin Laden perceives Americans as mere pests, a scourge upon the earth, to be exterminated!

In view of this, I am inclined to take the position that the extremists are a real threat, to be reckoned with.

Suicide bombers - for one - underscore the severity of the situation; the practice clearly establishes that the "enemy" has a completely different mindset which is dangerous.

Who do you know in Norh America that would strap a bomb on their body, and die for a cause - in the name of one God, country, Jesus, John Smith, Buddha, L. Ron Hubbard, or Mickey Mouse?

When asked what was wrong with U.S., Paul reacted without hesitation, "We're broke, and we're printing too much paper money".

Jay joked on the heels of this comment, "What's wrong with that?"

Well, it was evident at this point, that Mr. Leno is oblivious to the basics of economics, the function of the U.S Treasury, how inflation occurs, and why the dollar becomes devalued.

Curiously, when Leno asked the Republican candidate who he'd choose as a running mate, in the event he broke on through, he chortled, "Anyone who agrees with me!

At this point, he chastised his opponents, and their rant for "change".

"There would not be any need for war or change, if they read the Constitution and followed it," he opined, to loud cheers from the audience.

Good luck, on the campaign trail, Mr. Paul.

I wish it was all that easy.

FEDEX...Kinko's, where are you?

Ah, for the old days, when Kinko's was the place to head to wrap up all your printing needs...

Of course, the big draw with Kinko's was in the extras.

There was always an endless supply of paperclips, white-out, glue-sticks, and yellow highlighter to organize your project. And, always within easy reach - in case you screwed up - rulers, scissors and paper-cutters to render a quick patch-up job.

Yes, Kinko's was the one-stop place that met all your needs!

When Jay Leno started to make jokes about Kinko's on the Tonight Show, the owners knew they were on their way!

Occasionally, I strayed too far away from the Kinko zone and was forced to saunter into one of those "other" printing places - only to find the cupboard was not only bare - but I was begrudged a lousy piece of scotch tape by the miserly staff on duty.

Meanwhile, over at Kinko's, they were not only generous, but also ran on the honor system, too.

In the early days, you printed up your own copies, then casually strolled over to the cashier to pay up. I guess some customers were fudging on the numbers because after a while Kinko's outfitted all their copy machines with counters - those bulky, non-aesthetic-looking devices that could easily double for a weapon, if you were in a pinch.

But, some die-hard kleptos found their way around that; after copying their documents, they just slipped out the store and surreptitiously by-passed the cashier altogether.

At this point, Kinko's introduced the pay kiosk with credit card capability; is it my imagination, or did Kinko's start to head downhill from there? Copies rose to 9 or 10 cents a piece, the cost of Internet access jumped to a staggering 18 cents a minute, and they reluctantly provided you with a bag for your purchases when you signed off at the cashier.

But, the staff always remained friendly and weathered the storm.

Then, along came Fedex and the big buy-out. Now, they're known as FedexKinko's.

The name doesn't exactly trip trillingly off the tongue, does it? Even Kinko'sFedex has an oddball sound to it, wouldn't you agree? I kinda' like KinkyFedex - but something tells me they'll never go for it.

Besides, after paying all those big bucks for the popular giant of the printing industry, I expect they'll want to keep their own name up front and middle stage. I expect they're only using the Kinko's association right now to attract loyal consumers familiar with the brand name.

In time, Kinko's will be axed, and FEDEX will stand alone.

Until General Electric comes along...

It's a corporate jungle out there.
