Pet Peeves...Latino & Asian bottle blonds! Orange hair a fashion no-no!

Sassy & Brassy!
(easy does it, Cher)

Today's pet peeve?

Well, I am tossing the searing spotlight on dim-witted Latino and Asian beauties (a certain Italian songbird, too) who elect to become - "bottle blonds" - and end up with lustrous "Orange" hair!

OMG!

The screwy bodacious babes (!) must be color blind.

I dare say.

I mean, talk about a bad-hair day!

Don't these dizzy bitches realize how ridiculous they look in their kooky misguided attempt to appear lily "white" and surfer "blond"?

As to black women - well - I'm not going there!

Whenever I spy "black and orange" I immediately think "Halloween" after all.

Go figure!

Isn't it great to be a natural blond, Paris Hilton?

Later!

Latinos...exodus from Arizona? A surge to Texas, New Mexico, and California...

Reports are filtering in that the hard-hitting immigration law just signed into law is having a definite impact on communities in Arizona.

Accorrding to sources, in recent weeks there have been clear signs that Hispanics are in a state of panic, and already beginning to flee the border state.

Schools in Hispanic neighborhoods have noted that attendance has dropped dramatically.

In addition, businesses that normally serve the Latino community, have also confirmed that commerce is down.

Mainly, it's been a bad economy that has been the primary deterrent to many Hispanic immigrants seeking to enter Arizona, noted Jeffrey Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington.

“If you have a bad economy and a hostile environment, then that’s likely to cause people to think twice about coming, and possibly even to leave,” Mr. Passel says.

Because there have been many illegals in Arizona, the new immigration law also poses a serious threat, which may account for the sudden flux in demographic trends.

"The economy is a far more powerful factor in immigration," says David Gutierrez, a professor of immigration history, at the University of California San Diego.

Arizona’s immigrant population has already been leveling off for two years now due to the recession, according to leading analysts in the field.

The Pew Hispanic Center reports a 40 to 45 percent drop in people coming to the US from Mexico, says Passel.

That’s supported by data on border apprehensions, which have dropped 25 percent for two years in a row, he adds.

Where are they going?

It’s more likely, they’re migrating within the US, says Gutierrez.

But, they may not go quietly.

At one web site that published a news report on this issue, a Latino posted the following stinging comment:

"Fu**  you !  We were here first."

“It’s got to be an exceedingly difficult decision,” Gutierrez  says.

“Once they return to Mexico, it’s much harder to come back. It’s much more likely we’re seeing internal migration.”

Most Hispanics who flee Arizona will join friends, family, or other Hispanic communities in California, Texas, New Mexico, and other states with large Hispanic populations.

Looks like California, Texax, and New Mexico - for starters - may have to pass their own versions of the Arizona Law, eh?

News at 11!

Los Angeles...Latino shopowners on Olvera Steet hold back rent! Little Mexico under siege...

For the first time in years, I hopped on the red line and zoomed downtown (a scant few months ago), to spend a carefree day on Olvera Street in a part of town affectionately known as "Little Mexico".

Over the decades the popular tourist attraction has blossomed into quite a picturesque respite from the cement ravines bordering the precious little strip of property on all sides.

In fact, I was so captivated by the decorative tooling on the facades of Mexican-style restaurants - and a handful of historic buildings dating back two hundred years or so - that I was inclined to capture some footage on HD Video which I posted to YouTube.

Curiously, later in the week, a local newspaper reported that city council was holding meetings behind closed-doors with the aim of raising the rents in the festive little oasis (cut off from the rest of the city when the highway and bridge over-hangs were installed years ago) because they were too low.

It suddenly dawned on Council members that the valuable strip of property - a potential hefty earnings-getter - was being rented out for a song with virtually no profit flowing into the Los Angeles City coffers.

So, in January of this year - after a market value study of the property was completed - Council decided that the rents would be raised to be on par with other properties owned by the City and its tax-paying citizens.

Moreover, the extra funds were needed to balance the budget.

For example, the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument Society - charged with the upkeep of a memorial in the historic square - required an $800,000.00 subsidy from the city's general fund to balance its budget in recent years.

Increasing rents now is the best way to prevent subsidies from depleting city funds in coming years.

The report recommended that retail shopkeepers pay $2 - $6.50 per square foot.

The city controller's office has confirmed that most tenants on Olvera have been paying a paltry $1.35  per foot until the new rates were calculated and put into effect a few weeks ago.

Owners of kiosk-style spaces on the strip, on the other hand, have been paying an average of $300.00 a month.

Olvera shopkeepers should be charged $950 - $1350 monthly depending on the location.

El Pueblo officials have tried to push for rental increases over the years, but confided to the media in confidence, that a powerful politically-connected group has been thwarting their efforts.

Who could be more powerful than City Council or the California State Government?

It appears there may be an "invisible black hand" behind-the-scenes orchestrating control of the land.

If so, there must be a full investigation, to determine who the players are.

And, likewise, there must be swift severe action to nip the nefarious forces in the bud.

Surely, Citizens of Los Angeles don't hanker to the idea of corruption and violence breaking out in the streets downtown, true drug-cartel Latino-style!

In spite of the fact industry analysts have noted that the increases aforementioned are at a low end of the scale (tenants are still gettting a great deal) Olvera street tenants are rebelling.

A number of businessman, for instance, have held back rent money - and in some cases - checks were returned from the bank unpaid marked "stop pay" at the direction of digruntled merchants.

Imagine that!

Vivien Bonzo, President of the Olvera Street Merchants Association, is one of the flakes (who allegedly owes $5,095.00 in back rent).

Shouldn't Miss Bonzo (bozo?) be holding herself up as role model to her business neighbors?

Other tenants substantially behind include - Myrosa Enterprises (which is operated by Mike Marsical) - which currently owes in excess of $4,324.00 in back rent.

When a reporter from a weekly paper called Marsical's office to verify the facts, he hung up the phone angrily.

I expect that rude tantrum translates to:  no comment!

Will the defaulting rent-payers be given legal three-day notices to "pay or quit"?

Let's hope so!

After all,  if any - White, Afro-American, or Asian tenant refused to pay their rent - they'd be tossed into the street on their despicable deadbeat a**es.

In closing, it appears that Latino tenants have chosen the wrong time to fudge on their responsibilities.

The Governor in Arizona was recently forced to pass a landmark Immigration Reform Bill to resolve the issue of illegal immigrants crossing the border, and subsequently, draining vital State resources.

Now, their refusal to pay rent in California, underscores that Latino Immigrants are pparently a bunch of free-loaders who don't like to pay their way, bent on sapping America dry.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the next time Americans catch site of a Latino marching in U.S. Streets waving a Mexican flag, that they'll finally put their foot down and issue an ultimatum.

"Get out!"

Hopefully, the city will stand tough on the eviction notices, and other states will follow with similar immigration reform bills, to purge the nation of the illegal immigrant nightmare

Immigration Reform...proposed Arizona Law triggers protests in Los Angeles!

On the heels of an announcement that Arizona is proposing sweeping new Immigration Laws, Immigration Reform advocates took to the streets in Los Angeles yesterday to protest.

The most contentious issue pertains to a policy - that if approved - would allow Law Enforcement to request Immigrants provide proof of their citizenship, legal status, etc.

One spokesperson - a Puerto Rican woman by the name of Ms. Lopez - didn't help the cause any when she uttered up a stupid argument yesterday on behalf of the cause.

It's a ridiculous notion, she adamantly asserted at the rally, in so many words.

"No one carries their legal papers around with them," she angrily shouted

Ah, not true, Miss.

My permanent residency card is tucked inside my wallet right alongside my Driver's License and my Social Security Card.

Also, in many countries around globe, travellers (and residents alike) must provide documents to verify their identity (and legal status) when asked.

Why should Latinos get special treatment?

I do agree with Lopez in one respect, though.

Police Officers (and law enforcement personnel in general) should not stop an individual based on the color of their skin.

That is discriminatory and racist and not accepted in a country where the U.S. Constitution is the law of the land.

However, I am of the mind, that if a Police Officer stops an individual for just cause, that they should be allowed to check ID, legal status, and so forth and so on.

Americans have a right to know who is travelling within their borders.

In the final analysis, the Arizona Immigration Reform proposed, may end of curbing terrorism down the road (in addition to resolving the out-of-control illegal immigrant problem in the United States today).

If Latinos don't like the American way of life, then they should pack up, and go home!

The truth hurts, I know!

Latinos...crystal ball portends disaster in California! Culture Clash problematic...

If a White man speaks the truth
(He's labelled a racist)

Latinos worst offenders

In the morning Los Angeles Times - some idiot columnist in the front section of the daily - put forth the notion that because the Census Bureau will release statistics soon that indicate Latinos will be the majority in LA LA LAND in the future a concerted effort should be made to accommodate these immigrants from south of the border.

What a ludicrous premise to build an argument on.

A number of white folks I know have moved out of the city, because they allege that the City of Angels is overrun (their words, not mine) with Latinos.

Others compare the situation to smog.

"You get used to it. Take the necessary precautions," they quip somewhat amused.

Some say, Latinos have brought the backlash on themselves, due to their inappropriate defiant conduct and outright refusal to assimilate into the culture here alongside a smattering of other races thankful to be on these shores (without griping).

Locals lament that they are increasingly annoyed by the fact that their newspapers arrive late in the morning, the doors of Jack-in-the-Box and McDonald's always open late (never on the hour), and so forth and so on.

Siestas  may be the norm in Mexico, but don't cut it here, north of the border.

U.S. residents also complain that when they venture into a store operated mostly by Latino Immigrants, employees openly speak Spanish - thus, excluding English-speaking White Anglo-Saxons from the conversation - which they find not only rude but downright insulting.

In many instances, workers don't even speak the language, so when a problem arises in the business establishment the immigrants are unable to comprehend the specifics and  rectify the consumer's complaint issues.

Simple concepts like conserving water, for instance, are beyond them.

Ad nauseam they water down sidewalks mid-day during water shortgages without a clue!

Yes, what we have here is a failure to communicate, or understand the American culture.

Maybe, the INS should give classes on the U.S. way of life, with the requirement of a passing grade before legal papers are rubber-stamped for approval.

If the government doesn't put a handle on the growing culture clash soon, my crystal ball portends an impasse,  which may result in an uprising from within the borders (spelling disaster).

Obama, the ball is in your court!

United States...white majority predicted until 2050! Middle America sighs...

Over the past couple of years - and during Barack Obama's run for President - there was a lot of hysteria around the country in respect to the issue of race and numbers.

Some lamented that an influx of illegal immigrants was flooding these shores with a glut of Latinos - drawing on and draining vital Health Services and public resources (welfare benefits) - which the country could ill afford.

In other quarters racial tensions grew - because Barack Obama's bid for the Presidency appeared to signal to some a thrust for supremacy among Afro-Americans - anxious to overthrow the wrinkly old-white-men who've been in power for the last two hundred years.

On the heels on this, the Census Bureau announced that based on the numbers they crunched lately (gleened from recent polls around the Nation) that the white majority will continue to prevail until at least the year 2050.

Did I hear a collective sigh of relief from Caucasians around the country?

The Census Bureau attributed the trend to the recent financial melt-down - and post September 11th immigration enforcement - to the slowing of growth of minority groups in the U.S.

During the course of the research census bureau staff determined that a prediction that the poplulation in the U.S. would reach 400 million by 2039 was unrealistic (especially if the patterns of migration continue along the same lines).

Surprisingly, the U.S. population stands at 308 million - of which - two-thirds are non-Hispanic whites.

According to John Pitkin - a demographic researcher - the latest findings underscore the potency of  immigration reform.

"If immigration contines to slow, planning and education would be seriously affected,"  he noted for the record.

"The flow of immigration makes it more difficult to finance social security. It does slow down the economy a bit."

"In terms of thinking of the U.S. and what kind of country it is, it's important to realize that its racial and ethnic composition is changing," added D'Vera Cohn of the Pew Research Center.

"It's hard to say if the lower immigration flow will become the new normal."

Phonetics...when you don't know a rat's a** about English! Fake it...

In recent months, an intriguing phenomenon has reared its curious head in Los Angeles.

Of course, as you are no doubt aware, there has been a big brouhaha around the country about illegal immigrants, their right to work in the U.S. pending legal documentation, and the need for Immigration reform.

One of the pet peeves out here on the West Coast pertains to English (plain and simple).

If you reside in Los Angeles - chances are - you get frustrated when you saunter into a fast-food take-out joint and needlessly encounter difficulties in placing an order because the workers are not fluent in English.

Your stomach growls - aches for chow - but that stumbling block has to be bridged first before the tasty morsels arrive in the neat little cardboard box decorated with the McDonald's logo on is face.

A phrase a jailer barked in a prison yard in the critically-acclaimed film - "Cool Hand Luke" (which starred Paul Newman) - springs to mind in this circumstance.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate!"

The staff manning the take-out counter are probably Latino with little or no education.

Since English is not their mother tongue, problems often arise when a customer attempts to translate the specifics of a menu choice into a comprehensible image that the server will understand (and act on).

Yup!

The hungry consumer may have to conjure up a bit of amusing sign language (tap dance a little, too) in a bold-faced effort to drive the point home successfully.

If that bit of ingenuity doesn't engender the proper response, he or she may have to pray for Divine Intervention.

But, the Manager may be in the same boat, or just got off of one.

Oy veh!

When all else fails, the customer may have to rudely stab a finger at one of the slick ads on the menu overhead to indicate a choice, and trust that the gesture alone will rustle up some grub pronto on the heels of two little words.

"Uno, please."

On the heels of ICE breathing down employers' backs, and vows from the Government that E-Verify will be instituted in the near future to prevent illegal immigrants from working on these shores, I noticed that a handful of workers at McDonald's and Jack-in-the-box disappeared from service.

And, in the interim, the order process was streamlined and simplified sufficiently enough - that a meager understanding of English - was only required.

For instance, a system was devised whereby a hapless employee without English fluency need only punch in the order number, enter the sum paid by the customer, and hand back a balance due that was tabulated electronically by the restaurant computer.

Workers - capable of handling the pressure in this seat-of-the-pants scenario - were able to hold onto their jobs.

Unfortunately, the hopelessly challenged were forced to move on.

Even still, a posse of Americans stayed focused on the growing problem of undocumented workers who were unable to communicate effectively in the recognized language of the land.

Subsequently, a mind-boggling transformation surfaced in the workplace almost overnight.

For example, one day when I was munching on my high-calorie trans fat burger and fries, a worker uttered up a chorus of intriguing sounds that were vaguely familiar!

The startling event (I learned later by closer observation) was prone to arise when a customer interacted with a member of the staff.

Yup - out-of-the-blue one day - a Latino server actually greeted a customer when he waltzed up to place an order for lunch

But, the landmark event was ripe with a curious twist to it.

Because my ears are still razor sharp and sound as a bell - I managed to zero in on subtle nuances in the speech patterns - that led to a Eureka moment.

When the Latino sang out the intended phrase - good morning - the words were cut short (fell off the plateau) before the notes hit the air and and landed on their intended target!

It suddenly struck me what had just occurred.

The young Latino man was using phonetics to disguise his lack of fluency in English.

It was not only obvious to me how he did it, but why the situation developed in the unceremonious way it did.

You see, most individuals with a modicum of intelligence - even a touch of logic and common sense - are capable of figuring out the "obvious" in a situation (especially where there is a need for survival).

This fellow - like many others I've come across in recent months - wisely observed that when a customer walked through the door they usually spoke a word or two.

And, when exiting - likewise - tended to say a few parting words.

Understandably, it dawned on him after reflecting on the situation, that if he copy-catted the same "sounds" customers transmitted when they came and went - that he would give the impression he understood the language and was able to elucidate fluently in English.

Remarkable!

But, there was one major problem to contend with.

Not everyone speaks audibly (or enunciates correctly) when conversing with another individual.

Also, a person's failure to project the words and phrases properly, could conceivably stunt the sounds and cause them to be misunderstood.

Hence, the listener may not be able to discern the exact pronunciation - and more importantly - be able to fathom how to form the words and sing them out correctly in the future by way of their own vocal chords.

Notwithstanding, because the individual has probably never seen the word(s) in print - or been taught their origins, what they mean exactly, etc. - the phonetic attempts to discern the correct speech patterns for conversational purposes would be hindered considerably.

But, the untrained ear (or one that was not listening intently) might be fooled.

Not moi!

On the occasion that I happened across the curious phenomenon, I distinctly heard the Latino man misspeak with earnest.

"Ave a goo dai"

Say what?

I sure hope it won't be gooey, I chuckled to myself.

To test my theory, one day I quizzed an employee  about a subject that wasn't related to the order process.

Uh-huh!

His eyes went wide, jaw dropped, and the poor sucker literally froze on the spot.

The poor darling didn't know what the heck I was asking of him.

Why?

Because the question was a foreign one that did not fit into the known-scenario in the order process that they were accustomed to.

To be fair, though, I realize full well that if you or I traveled overseas to Italy or France, we both might end up mangling their language, too, without a lesson or two under our belts.

Why not just admit the lack of fluency, be open about it, and put our best foot forward?

It all boils down to fear, I guess.

If some of  these Latino immigrants would acknowledge the truth and at least try to make an effort to learn English - and reach out for heaven's sake - perhaps Americans might be more sympathetic to their plight

For example, when I was in Montreal many moons ago, I learned a valuable lesson in that regard.

Although I was taught Parisian French in school (Canada is a bi-lingual country) I was unable to communicate effectively because (1) French Canadians never warmed up to the way France's countrymen conversed in the language, hence, they developed their own style of speaking it (the two factions hate each other, in fact); (2) the Quebecois speak in a regional (some say, guttural) form of French that outsiders are unable to grasp unless they gain access to their innermost social circles.

In sum, the Parisian French we are taught in Canadian Schools is quite formal.

If I conversed in my "King's French", I would appear to be uppity to French Canadians.

In sum, the gaffe on my part, would be a slap in the face.

For that reason, I chose to rent an apartment in the Village in Montreal when I resided there,  to broach that problem.

Consequently, my daily interactions with the locals, and good-faith efforts to communicate in a style and manner they were accustomed to, went a long way to smooth over the waters - and ultimately - earn their respect.

In the end, the Quebecois (usually anti-Anglo) reached out to me, as well.

If there was more of that kind of give-and-take in Los Angeles - and a sincere good-faith intention on the part of both Latinos and English-speaking Americans in that regard - both sides of the language fence would be able to resolve their differences.

The end result?

There would be hands across the borders instead of fists!

Race...relations in LA LA Land! Telling it like it is...

'Ya know you're in Los Angeles if you spy African Americans chauffeuring city dwellers around on the Metro Bus line and delivering up the morning mail, Latinos manning service counters and drive-thru windows at fast-food take-outs, and Asian bakers rustling up doughnuts with sprinkles on 'em for rush-hour commuters to munch on during the hectic trek across town.

And, what about the white folks?

Well, they're sipping on hot java in comfy leather easy-chairs at Starbucks, complaining about it to anyone within earshot.

It's a rat race out here on the West Coast, alright!
