Dennis Hopper...dies at 74! Easy Rider legend mourned today...

Legendary Hollywood actor - Dennis Hopper - who first rose to prominence playing opposite Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson in George Steven's sprawling Western Saga - "Giant: - died at his home in Venice on Saturday.

Mr. Hopper (74) death has been attributed to complications from prostate cancer.
The multi-talented actor (he was also an accomplished painter) is best known for directing and starring in the 1969 cult classic “Easy Rider".

I was blessed with the opportunity to interview the one of the last great stars at the Las Vegas Film Festival (CineVegas).

Mr. Hopper was a kind, gentle man, full of grace!

On March 26th (2010) Hopper was delighted to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (long overdue by the way).

Although terminally ill, he waved to fans (with Jack Nicholson at his side) who responded with thunderous cheers, foot stomping, and vigorous clapping.

Dennis Hopper brought a lot of joy to the world.

The charismatic actor (God broke the mold after he made him) will be missed.

Dennis Hopper...honored with Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame! Legal battle complicates life...

Dennis Hopper, the legendary actor who worked with screen heavyweights - Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean in George Steven's sprawling Western saga - "Giant" - appeared frail and under-the-weather in Hollywood earlier today when he was honored with a star on the celebrated Walk of Fame.

Life is complicated at the moment for the seasoned pro, who has been a mainstay on the Hollywood film scene, for over 50 golden years.

Mr. Hopper is currently being treated for prostate cancer and is said to be terminally ill.

I reported on the nasty turn in the actor's health when he was first rushed to emergency a few months ago.

Since that time, Mr. Hopper has been receiving care at a medical facility specializing in the treatment of prostate cancer.

In the interim, his estranged wife stepped up divorce proceedings, which has placed additional mental and emotional strain on the actor ( no doubt).

Although doctors nixed efforts on the part of his former spouse to haul the ailing actor into a deposition hearing - in respect to matters pertaining to the divorce battle that has been raging on in the local courts non-stop - the physican was inclined to give a nod to the outing on Hollywood Boulevard with the ultimate aim of boosting Hopper's overall morale.

Hopper arrived just before 11:30 a.m. and was spied smiling and shaking hands with guests of note before taking his seat in front of the Egyptian Theatre.

Last year, I met Mr. Hopper on the red carpet at the CineVegas Film Festival in Las Vegas, and he was gracious enough to grant me an interview.

After that auspicious premiere event, I often mixed and mingled with Mr. Hopper at various film festival events during the course of its run.

A gentleman and a scholar.

Not many of us left!

Get well soon, Mr. Hopper!

Watermelon...rich in nutrients! A sex stimulant?

For years now, I was aware of that fact that the deep red color in watermelon was nutrient-rich.

But, how or why, was unclear to me.

On a basic level, watermelon is healthy simply because of its high water content.

After all, people don't drink enough water during the course of the day to maintain proper hydration.

Well, the magical properties of the curious fruit have been revealed!

"The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body," said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center in College Station.

For starters, the bulky food stuff is rich in lypocene, beta carotene, and citrulline.

Of course, the good news about citrulline is that it relaxes blood vessels similar to the way Viagra does, too.

Ha!

Just saw a posse of dudes dash out the door to the market to pluck a handful up.

Allegedly, Citrulline interacts with the body's enzymes when consumed in large quantities (bring back a dozen fellas!) and is transformed into arginine which is an important amino acid that benefits the circulatory system, too.

There are issues to address, though.

Citrulline is more highly-concentrated in the rind.

So, scientists are seeking the best method of extracting the wonder nutrient, to take advantage of its potent pulp.

It is wholly possible that a pill may be developed in the near future.

After all, there is another drawback, too.

If an individual consumes several slices in one sitting there may be a diuretic effect.

Yup, you may be dashing off to the mensroom, shortly after you've tested the boner effect.

Another good aspect?

Because the succulent fruit tends to be more alkaline than acidic, watermelon may help reduce acid indigestion.

As an added bonus, studies have also shown that deep red varieties of watermelon have displaced the tomato as the lycopene king, Patil said.

Almost ninety-two percent of watermelon is water, but the remaining eight percent is loaded with lycopene, an anti-oxidant that protects the human prostate and promotes skin health.

"Lycopene, which is also found in red grapefruit, was historically thought to exist only in tomatoes," the diet expert said.

"But now we know that it’s found in higher concentrations in red watermelon varieties."

A quick note in passing.

Watermelons store much better uncut if you leave them at room temperature.

Lycopene levels are sufficiently maintained even as watermelon rolls around on your kitchen floor.

But once you cut it, refrigerate.

What not spruce up the mouth-watering slices with a mix of cantaloupe, strawberries, and grapes?

Get creative in the kitchen and enjoy!

And kids like it, too...
