UCLA...spoiled Asian students leave trail of trash!

Last night as I strolled through the campus at UCLA, I spied about two-dozen or so Asian students whooping it up on the grass near one of the main plazas on campus.

Personally, I wholeheartedly recommend that a student take a breather from the books and kick up his or her heels now and then.

As they say, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

However, it was disappointing to to take the same trek this morning and have to stumble over a mound of trash the thoughtless students left strewn all over the lawn and cobbled walk.

Obviously, these spoiled freshmen don't have a clue about trash (especially of the plastic and tin-can variety) and how it negatively impacts the environment.

Heh, kiddies!

Mommie and Daddie were generous enough to foot the bill for University, the least you could do is clean up after yourself.

Free Iran...news alert! Protestors at Federal Building...Feb 8th

Just a short while ago, I was cruising along Wilshire Boulevard when I spied a rag-tag band of protestors in front of the Federal Building waving signs excitedly to motorists passing by.

In bold-faced type one screamed out the following message:

"Free Iran".

Another made a plea.

"Democracy for Iran."

Why is it that activists on the trail of their cause always park themselves down in front of the Federal Building?

Are they in the dark about the fact the FBI holds sway on the top two levels of that high-security Government facility?

Unfortuately, the traffic was so hectic in Westwood, that I was unable to scoot from the inside lane over to the side of the road to snatch up a flier or at least have a brief chat with one of the organizers.

I expect there will be a report on the news tonight or in the dailies, tomorrow.

Free Iran?

Yeah, and while you're at it - free the nuclear bombs - too!

Westwood...sculpture imprisoned! Art-lovers kept at bay...

Pablo Picasso sculpture

In a small park in Westwood - just next to the Federal Building - an enticing piece of sculpture beckoned me from afar.

Being a great fan of art in-the-round outdoors, blended in with the natural environment, I strolled over to explore the artist's rendering up-close and personal.

As I drew closer, I was taken aback when I spied a chain-link fence haphazardly erected around the circumference of it.

Odd, that!

A plaque bore an inscription, so I inched closer to peruse it, in the event there was a clue or two as to why the work of art appeared to be out-of-bounds to the art-loving public.

The message was somewhat ironic!

It read:

"Touch and Experience"

Was this some wacko's idea of a sick joke?

Or, just maybe, this was one of Yoko Ono's mind-fu** conceptual art pieces?

In the alternative - just maybe - I was a surprise guest on candid camera and my reactions were being filmed for a side-splitting episode on the subject of modern art!

In that event, I expect I was supposed to play along, climb over the barrier, and touch away.

Get all orgasmic over the enlightening cultural "experience"?

I waited a beat or two, but no camera crew scrambled out from behind the trees or from within any of the roomy SUV's parked on the street nearby.

All in all, it ended up being a rather hollow experience.

Kind of like viewing a Takashi Murakami flat painting!

Smile for the day...life's embarrassing moments?

This morning I sauntered into Noah's New York Bagels to splurge on a morning snack.

As I sat down at the counter - slathered cream cheese on my bagel and proceeded to sip on a delicious cup of imported tea - I spied a curious sight.

A fellow just outside the window was strategically-placing a section of the weekend newspaper on a chair to prevent any dirt from soiling his pristine-white slacks when he sat down.

I chuckled to myself.

On many occasions when I've read the morning paper, the newsprint has ended up all over my hands.

Later this morning, I expect this poor man will be strolling around the streets of Westwood, with a headline imprinted all over his a**.

David Geffen Playhouse...Family Fun Day packed to rafters! A run-away success...

Today when I cruised around the West Hollywood Book Fair, I ran smack dab into the booth for the David Geffen Playhouse.

One of the organizers for "Family Fun Day" - which I penned a post on this past week - excitedly informed me the casual get-together for kids and parents ended up being an overwhelming run-away success!

In fact - the turn out was so large - the Geffen staff got taken by surprise!

"Over 800 hundred people showed up," the jovial woman noted ecstatically.

In fact, the Geffen playhouse was forced to schedule additional performances, to ensure no one was left out in the cold!

"People were waiting in line, so we felt badly about turning them away."

Though not originally planned, the Los Angeles Ballet - for instance - ended up giving four performances to full houses throughout the course of the day.

As I noted in my post a few days ago, The David Geffen Playhouse invited parents and their children to attend a celebratory preview of the upcoming "Saturday Scene" season.

"Saturday Scene" is a weekly morning event that introduces kids to the magic of live theater and musical entertainment by experiencing an age-appropriate Saturday Scene production!

The program provides an interactive journey into the world of music, dance puppetry and storytelling and is appropriate for kids aged 2 - 12.

At the "Free Event" yesterday, parents were able to take a sneak peak at a sampling of the live theatre and musical entertainment that will be part of the upcoming Saturday Scene Season.

At the open house on Saturday, fun activities included performances by the "Disney Radio" street team.

And, there was also a costume photo booth.

The Geffen's gracious sponsors - Gelson's & Sweet Leaf - provided free food and refreshments to the theatre enthusiasts who turned up with their young ones in tow.

In addition to the Ballet Performances, on the main stage there were a handful of performances by popular stage acts like Melissa Green, Darryl Van Leer, Will and Co, Shushybye Dream Band and Frog Belly Rat Bone.

Undoubtedly - judging by the turn-out anyway - a number of parents are wise to the fact children need to be exposed to the theatre arts at a young age!

For those of you who were unable to attend the open house yesterday, but who are still interested in the Saturday morning programs, contact the staff at the Geffen Playhouse for more details about the upcoming season.

See 'ya there this fall, eh?

"Third"...Geffen Playhouse stage production; 2/3 short of entertaining!

The Geffen Playhouse is a pleasant venue...

The front foyer is softly lit and aesthetically-pleasing to the eye. And, the courtyard is a lovely sanctuary to sip on a glass of wine, munch on a cheese and fruit plate, or engage in a quiet tete-a-tete.

As the curtain call rang, my eye quickly scanned a brief synopsis of the featured play I was attending - "Third" - by celebrated playwright, Wendy Wasserstein ( Heidi Chronicles).

Laurie Jameson is a professor who has made a number of important inroads - academically-speaking - at a private Liberal Arts College.

When Woodson Bull III (as in "Third") - a jock - who, in his own words, "just wants to learn, wrestle, and graduate" - is accused of "alleged plagiarism" by Jameson, the two hard-heads end up sparring over politics, Shakespeare, and campus culture - with dramatic results.

Sub-plots weave through the main story, which include - an insightful peek at the emotional trauma of a friend who is terminally-ill; the baffling rebellion of a troubled daughter; and an intriguing foray into the issue of "senility" and its impact - by way of a father...who, in the words of the daughter, "always made me feel safe".

The play is in two acts; each consisting of small scenes, which suffice to cut short material which often strains a little here and there throughout the production.

There are a number of problems with "Third" in its new incarnation at the Geffen.

First and foremost, it appears that Christine Lahti is miscast in the lead.

A case in point...

In the opening classroom scene, Lahti stands center stage, and talks to the audience as if they are her students.

Right off the bat, it is evident that Ms. Lahti lacks the ability to make the scene work; there is no subtlety or appropriate nuance in her characterization, for example.

While stage acting may require a role be played "bigger" - as opposed to those in another medium such as Film or Television - here, Lahti struggles to attain a proper balance.

Consequently, her acting comes across as forced and stilted; realism suffers, as a result.

Part of the problem is with the material.

Ms. Wasserstein's characters are mere puppets, manipulated to spill out her ideas, philosophies - whatever.

At times, it appears the playwright is using Jameson's character as a mere vehicle, to convey how intelligent, insightful, or educated she is...but frankly, people don't talk like that; subsequently, the material falls flat.

Matt Czuchry - who plays "Third" - uses a lot of body language in this play to effect a macho stance...but he lacks the acting ability to pull it off; in fact, at times, the excessive posturing - the strange flexing of upper-body parts, for instance - is distracting, does not ring true.

Years ago, a coach offered up classes on how to act "straight", with the aim of making actors more marketable for producers who oft times are homophobic - when it comes to leading men, anyway.

For some inexplicable reason, I got the distinct impression Czuchry was schooled there, but failed to land a certificate.

At times, his performance reminded me of another play by renowned writer, Edward Albee - "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf".

In the movie version, George Segal effectively plays the role of young stud on campus. At times, I surmised Mr. Czuchry was imitating Segal, poorly.

I wouldn't write him off entirely, though.

In one key scene with Jameson's daughter, his acting style transformed considerably...became more natural.

A chemistry between the two young characters registered honestly, and showed a lot of promise, for both actors.

Maybe, Czuchry needs more seasoning, a better director, material of higher calibre... so that his talent may render itself more palpable to a paying, theatre-going public.

Originally, "Third" was a one-act play, which was expanded.

Maybe, this is where the trouble arises.

Material that is re-worked is often best left alone.

Here, there is too much dabbling, intellectualizing, mind-speak, shallowness of character...to be substance of a hit, or even a satisfying night of theatre.

Ironically, the promotional material in the program notes,

F. Scott Fitzgerald once proclaimed that there are no second acts in American lives...

Here, it applies to the "T", as in Theatre 1.
