Kate Gosselin...media monster about to bust out! Billy Bush watch your back...

Has Kate Gosselin gobbled up her fifteen minutes of fame?

Or, is the madcap mom just over-exposed?

Tonight, the 'Dancing with Stars" contestant was all sweetness and light and all over the airwaves.

Imagine that, Kate segued into co-hosting with Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonight.

Next to the seasoned pro, Kate came off a bit timid, and in need of some vocal projection.

Although Hart didn’t appear to be have her feathers ruffled by this novel upstart, it appeared to be a different scenario over on the set of Access Hollywood with Billy Bush.

Was it my imagination, or was Kate taking a dim view of the Bush bravado and his in-your-face cocky man-style?

When he asked her what she was laughing at in one curious moment, she held back.

But, like me, viewers at home must have perceived that Kate didn’t find much favor with the Bush persona.

Bad “office” politics, Kate!

Oh well, blame it on emotional exhaustion.

The clunky two-stepper has been pushed and probed about dating, has worried over custody battles, you name it.

All of her responses appear to be calculated promotional “burps” designed to manipulate interviewers and rustle up a squeaky-clean image sure to warm the hearts and minds (and sympathy) of  viewers around the country.

I pity John!

Oh, she’s a monster alright, but most are in the dark about that right now.

Wake up and smell the coffee, America!

Access Hollywood..slams Octa-Mom coverage! Kudos...

Access Hollywood

The other evening I was settling in for some post-Oscar red carpet coverage on - The Insider - when a swirl of exquisite couture fashions was rudely interrupted with a promo for an upcoming interview with the deranged mother of the octuplets.

How rude!

In recent days, there has been so much excessive coverage dominating the airwaves.

Did the bombastic baby plopper plot to hatch the eight eggs?

Was moolah the money-grubbing wackos motive?

Blah! Blah! Blah!

Then, the news flash cut to a highly-emotionally-charged on-camera cat fight with her estranged mother.

In a sizzling segment (!) at another network entertainment-format show, a probing interviewer barraged the gainfully-employed baby-maker with tasteless questions about plastic surgery, an obvious obsession (and desperate psychological need) to be in the spotlight at any ugly cost.

I scrambled for the remote and blasted her off the TV screen.

Have people gone mad?

Why are they fanning the flames of this bizarre tale right out of the Twilight Zone?

Last night at the tail end of Access Hollywood, Billy Bush - one of the entertainment hosts on that popular night-time show - informed the viewing audience that Access Hollywood would not be party to the Octa-Mom controversy which they categorized as "gross".

"If there is a reality show produced, or other legitimate news in the near future, we'll inform you about it," he stressed for the record in an almost angry tone of voice.

"We'll report it, but we won't reward it."

Amen!

Hippocrates said it best:

"Everything in excess is opposed to nature."

Perez Hilton...radio snippets, sure to entice commuters. But, Billy Bush?

The Wall Street Journal was all agog recently over news that Perez Hilton - titillating gossip maven with Internet spin - signed to broadcast snippets of celebrity news on the humble old radio in a raft of markets around the Nation.

The twice-daily rag-bites - three minutes in duration - will funnel out into the stratosphere during both the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Was the stint below his stature they kind of inferred between the lines?

On the contrary, Perez (not his real name) noted that he was inclined to float into the ubiquitous airwaves because he perceived the arena as a lucrative medium ripe with the capability to "drive" more traffic to his site. As if he needed any more tongue-wagging followers!

His site captured 2.8 million unique net surfers in February.

Whoa, Nellie!

Hilton noted that he was tuned in to the sassy radio while cruisin' about town one day (gosh, thought he'd have a chic chauffeured limousine by now to purr around the Inner-city in) when it hit him - like lightning - that there was a whole savvy audience "out there" to tap into.

Of course, Ryan Seacrest has been schlepping back and forth between the squawk box and the boob tube for years and he hasn't fared too badly - except in the Metro sexual department, perhaps.

But, Billy Bush?

On the heels of the Perez Hilton stunner I happened to be munching on a tasty plate of French fries at my favorite Burger place on Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood when the tattler's voice (no relation) squeaked over the transistor speaker about his spanking-new entertainment feature.

First guest?

A faceless Julia Roberts - who started right in with little foreplay - stirred things up with election chit-chat; then, elicited a number of wide yawns as she touted one of her causes - ecologically-sound water bottles.

Bush gushed that guests have been scrambling to jockey for a spot on his talk fest and that - surprise - he'll not only thumb through his little black book to conjure up scintillating guests but draw on his "in" with Access Hollywood to rustle up first-class celebrities for the regular segment each week.

He either pines to spread his wings - or just maybe - needs the extra moolah to feed those three kids. College tuition is expensive, 'ya know?

But, which came first - the chicken or the egg?

I expect Perez's venture has given the green light to a few media types hesitant heretofore.

So, now I expect that in addition to Bush, Perez, and Seacrest there will be a proliferation of cross-over hosts from far-reaching broadcast corners beckoning when you flip that old-style dial.

Hilton added that the inspiration for a cultivation of new shores was prompted by a healthy appreciation for sexy Paris Hilton (no relation) who he asserts - "has been able to create a cottage industry" - by virtue of her marketing smarts.

The Journal seems to feel that the Perez move indicates willingness on the part of major media to not only acknowledge "talent" on the Internet - but to develop, nurture, and shake hands with it. Sign lucrative deals, in fact.

And, the analysts have concluded that as a result of this startling turn of events a new legitimacy is being forged in respect to the blogosphere and its inhabitants as a result.

So, if the pap Perez doles out doesn't end up appealing to the palette of the commuter folk - at least he'll garner credit for paving the wave for the rest of us mortal gossip-mongers - snatching at the meager crumbs he's left in his wake.

Bush to abandon fake props for radio zip...

Golden Globe Awards...unveiled with little pomp or circumstance!

One of the jewels in Tinseltown's crown was packed away until further notice, as the Writers Guild of America continued with its contentious strike action against Hollywood Producers.

The Golden Globes, one of the most glamorous award shows in the calendar year, was cancelled in favor of a low-key press conference, which came and went without fanfare.

The broadcast, which aired on NBC, lasted about sixty minutes - and stuffed in it - were the names of the winners...a task which normally takes about 3 1/2 hours to unveil to start-struck viewers at home.

There were no mad dashes to the podium, awkward moments on stage, or impromptu political speeches about Zionist hoodlums; indeed - not one actor excitedly gushed, as they peed their pants - "You like me. You really like me."

Instead of endless footage of red carpet (ho hum), fleets of luxurious stretch limos purring at the curb, and voluminous shots of stars scanning the landscape - picking their noses - and jockeying for best face-time on-camera...the nominees were read out in rapid-fire procession with the award-winners announced before the dust had the opportunity to settle.

Ah, but didn't we miss the suspense - the adrenalin rush - of it all?

But, the format did have its plusses.

Producers were able to offer up clips of the nominees, toss in some background color - and ultimately - tantalize us with teasers just before commercial break...without those pesky, scene-stealing celebrities, getting in harm's way.

Of course, we were forced to put up with bothersome Television Hosts - like Billy Bush of "Access Hollywood" - who was having a bad hair day. And, struggle through fluffy commentary by self-described "insider experts" in the show biz arena. Most of the time, their predictions were off the mark, go figure!

NBC cleverly used the occasion to herd viewers to their web site, NBC.COM. Fans, and armchair critics alike, were offered the opportunity to vote on their favs before the vote-counts were broadcast later in the program.

The idea was a novel, fun one; obviously meant to sooth and entertain an audience that must have been a bit testy about the awards-show cancellation, and subsequent, non-glitzy turn-of-events.

You know what they say; necessity is the motherhood of invention.

When it came to the prize-getters, there were a number of upsets, and welcome surprises.

I, for one, was rooting for Marion Cotillard, who starred in the feature film "La Vie En Rose". Her best actress win in the Musical film category is a good sign for the upcoming Oscar run. For those unfamiliar with the film, or Ms. Cotillard's performance, check out my review. (Post, La Vie En Rose, 9/5/07)

Johnny Depp broke a curse that has been swirling around him for the past decade; after losing a bid six times, "Sweeney Todd" proved to be a lucky charm which nabbed him the pretty little Golden Statuette.

Many were overwhelmed by Tina Fey's win. The writer and creator of 30 Rock was not expecting a nomination (or a Golden Globe) in the category of Best Actress in a comedy, but that's the way it turned out for the talented young woman.

Some speculated that David Duchovney's win for "Californication" was a carry-over from the "X-Files" days, when the Foreign Correspondents previously gave an approving nod.

Julie Christie - who gave a remarkable performance in a drama shot in Canada (Away From Her) - won, after a drought of thirty years. The last time she was nominated was for "Shampoo", when she was being squired around by the film's star, Warren Beatty.

Julian Schnabel - an illustrious artist of note - won for Best Director for "The Diving Bell & the Butterfly"...his first time out at directing.

Though some thought "No country for Old Men" (quite overrated, and a flawed film, in my estimation) might rustle up an award, "Attonement" ended up scooping the prize to the surprise of many.

Cate Blanchett - who played the role of "Bob Dylan" in the intriguing biographical film - "I'm not There" - received the award for Best Actress.

Once again, the Foreign Correspondents confirmed, they have little prejudice against those who cross gender lines.

In fact, judging by the outcome of the Golden Globes this year, it is quite evident that the Foreign Correspondents no longer go for the favorites, but on occasion, champion the long shot.

Not surprising, since the honor should be based on talent, not popularity.
