Hal Sparks...Icons Comedy Series @ The Hilton! Las Vegas!

Next to "Brian" on Queer as Folk, Hal Sparks portrayed my second-favorite character on the scintillating
no-holds barred cable television series which zeroed in on the gay subculture in America (shot in my hometown of Toronto, of course) warts-and-all.

Some gay activists protested against the long-running "adult gay soap opera" because it tended to put a searing spotlight on gay taboos which folks in Hollywood were trying to "whitewash" in a bold-faced effort to create a better image of homosexuals to the American viewing public.

Only positive healthy gay images, please!

Oh, tough titty, I say!

Like it or not, just like in the heterosexual world, there is a lot of preoccupation with SEX in daily life - and getting down-and-dirty in pursuit of it - is natural and healthy.

Why try to hide it?

We're all human after-all with animal instincts that need to be satiated.

To balance that out, however, the producers often focused on important gay issues as well - such as drug addiction, A.I.D.S., police brutality against gays - you name it!

At times, Queer as Folk, was a pretty thought-provoking controversial show!

I was sad when the cast and crew packed up and said adios!

Now Hal Sparks is appearing in Las Vegas at the Hilton Hotel lounge in the "Icons of Comedy Series".

Who knew?

His character on "Queer as Folk" was so sensitive and caring and - well - swishy!

On a talk show the other morning in Vegas it was evident to anyone watching that it was all an act.

The "real" Hal Sparks is quick-witted, acid-tongued, and in-your-face.

Is it just that he's getting older and more cynical, or was I blind to his true personality before?

It was a bit disappointing to hear him "take swipes" at people - because frankly - I didn't think he had it in him to be mean or heartless or cruel.

Oh well, maybe it's all an act - too!

Or, just maybe, he's been watching too much of Dennis Miller's segments on the nightly news hour!

For thirty bucks at the door, see what 'ya think, this weekend!

See 'ya there!

MGM Grand...Lady Gaga slated for LGBT extravaganza! 4-day Event starts Friday!

Lady Gaga zooms into MGM Grand Friday!

MGM Grand locked  heads with the Lesbian & Gay Community and rustled up a 4-day week-end extravaganza - titled Fabulous Vegas - to kick-off this Friday with a Lady Gaga Live! Concert.

The Hotelier intends to include a handful of their strip properties to present the phenomenal event!

"It's a way to infuse some cash into the local economy," a spokesman at MGM confided.

It has not escaped management's attention that gays have a lot of buying power.

One editor at  a LGBT publication was quick on the uptake, too.

"For a major corporation like MGM Grand to recognize the clout gays garner is encouraging."

Part of the lure?

Because many couples have double incomes - and no children - they have a lot of  disposable income.

And, that cash may be used to splurge on leisure and travel activities.

The MGM Grand has hopped on the band wagon to take advantage of that!

Whether the money is pink or not, matters little, when it comes to the bottom line.

See 'ya there!

San Francisco...Mark Abramson @ Books Inc! Synchronicity abounds with Russian River Rat author...

Yesterday was an intriguing day, but auspicious signs during the course of it, signalled I was on the right path and where I was meant to be according to the cosmic design.

Early in the day, when I was unable to locate the LA Times, I settled for the San Francisco Chronicle which I plucked up at the local newstand.

As I quickly gleaned the pages, I spied an iintriguing article on disappearing Sea Lions in San Francisco Bay, which I clipped out to refer to for a potential post later in the week on the environment.

The rest of the day's schedule filled up pretty quickly - and the energy expended to keep abreast of it - ended up rustling up a craving for munchies around 7 p.m.

As I scoured Market Street for an inviting diner to slip into, I spied Books Inc, and thought I'd pop in to snatch up the Times (to read over dessert).

For the first time on this visit to Frisco (after searching high & low for the Los Angeles daily) a cashier at the back desk finally informed me that the newspaper did not have a distributor in the tony Bay area.

So, I was SOL.

With a sigh, I started to turn away, when I noticed a gaggle of fold-up chairs uniformly placed around a small podium in the center of the backroom.

Just as that image caught my eye, I suddenly realized that customers were strolling in and taking seats, for what appeared to be an in-house literary event.

The cute staffer informed me that writer Mark Abramson - who penned the popular "Beach Series" tome - Russian River Rat - would be reading a few paragraphs from his latest (as yet unpublished)  offering.

Unfortunately, I was not familiar with the author or his celebrated book on the Russian River hot-spot.

In fact, I'm probably the only the single male to have never trekked up to the popular resort for a week-end of camp.

I've heard all the - gossip, rumors, and innuendo - though.

All true, I gather from trustworthy sources (oh, yeah!).

As it turns out, that morning the Chronicle mentioned the event - but for some inexplicable reason - I didn't stumble across it (just the report on Sea Lions).

How ironic!

As the - witty, outgoing, middle-aged author prepared to read excerpts from "Snowball" - he chortled in an aside that the manuscript may have to undergo some judicious edits before the publishing phase, if the Sea Lions continued to vanish from the bay.

Apparently the delightful sea creatures play a major role in uncovering a macabre twist in the plot.

Talk about synchronicity!

At this juncture, soothed by the realization that I was where I was meant to be at that given moment in time, I settled in for a very entertaining night at the bookstore.

The author was blessed with a packed house - in fact - several fans of his reading style were forced to stand (due to a lack of chairs) as he delighted us all with excerpts from - not only the new book - but from old favorites other book-lovers in the cozy nook were familiar with.

Then, there was a special surprise treat.

Mark pointed out that a publisher back east was interested in his "Diaries" which consisted of entries that stretched back a few decades.

So, he was inclined to read a couple of highly-personal notes from those intimate "memoires", fortunately for his enthusiastic fan base in attendance.

Abramson selected a couple of entries from January 7th (1975, I believe) because that was the date of yesterday's book-reading.

It was going to be interesting to learn what was on his mind the same day so many moons ago.

Imagine that!

The musings all focused on his first attempt to join a writer's group (early on in his literary career) and his hand-wringing about this 'n that - what to toss over his muscular bod to attract a trick and which choice poems to select to best represent his style (in that order!) - and so forth and so on.

As to last night's venture into celebrity, well, he was warmly received by the surprisingly down-to-earth cross-section of gay men who casually-strolled in totally devoid of attitude.

On occasion, Mr. Abramson's interaction with the rapt audience was highly personal in nature.

For example, he chatted a bit about the A.I.D.S. crisis when it hit the Castro like a ton of bricks, and touched on the havoc it caused initially.

Some of the unforgettable experiences inspired his writing, naturally.

For example, he introduced one character - in his cast of many - who became affectionately known as the "bug chaser".

At one point in the early days of the outbreak, older gay men in the throes of various stages of the disease, commanded a remarkable outpouring of love from a compassionate community anxious to reach out and provide comfort in the hour of suffering.

In response to that, a curious phenomenon arose in the gay community, which was shocking to some.

A number of young gays (18-24 age-range basically) felt left out - after all, in neighborhoods like the Castro, West Hollywood, and elsewhere - those stricken with the killer virus were taken into the fold at support groups and hands-on treatment centers and were even provided with free prescription drugs for a myriad of ailments and funding to defray housing costs.

Subsequently, these hapless misguided kids actively sought out older gay men afflicted with the disease, to infect them (willingly or not).

Shortly after that strange episode in gay history, the producers and writers at "Queer as Folk", actually incorporated that disturbing manifestation into a major plot line on the highly-popular cable show.

The ratings skyrocketed, of course!

During the course of the readings last night, there were a number of humorous moments, as well.

The unassuming writer (who - like many S.F. dudes - shaves his head) joked about white sheets referred to in one chapter.

A couple of the guests reacted in a knee-jerk Martha Stewart kind-of-way.

"Who buys white sheets," one roared!

In response, Mark - quick on the uptake - chirped up.

"Well, I figure, if ever there was an emergency, you could wave them to attract help."

Of course, this triggered an old memory from my past.

A lover and I were strolling through a park years ago (not telling which one!) when nature's beauty was inclined to romantically sweep us up into each other arms.

So, we thought it might be a touch risque - and a real adrenalin rush - to lay down in the grass and smooch a little in the bright mid-day sun with Mother Nature's bounty serenading us all around.

Right-off-the-bat, we figured we'd better go off the beaten path (so to speak), and far from the madding crowd.

Curiously, when we hiked up towards the peak of one hill, the foliage diminished somewhat - and eventually - consisted of mainly low-lying shrubs.

Oh well, we were far enough away from prying eyes, that we figured we would be able to snuggle-up without any unexpected intrusions on our intimate moment in the park.

Unfortunately, my friend was wearing bright white undershorts.

Wouldn't 'ya know it, just as we were in the midst of our clinch, we suddenly heard the thunderous roar of a whirly-bird.

We jumped up and scanned the skies to determine if it was nearby.

Turns out, it was the Channel 5 News helicopter (normally used to chart the afternoon rush-hour traffic for the news anchors at the station) heading right in our direction.

OMG!

They must have seen the white flash of his skivvies hanging ten from the bushes below and thought someone was crying out for help!

Well, quick as a wink, we were buttoning up and scooting down the slope to high-tail it outta there.

I intended to tell the story to Mr. Abramson after the readings, but he was busy signing books (so I passed).

Hopefully, he'll stumble on this post, and have a good laugh!

For the most part, the event ran like clock-work, though I did have some frustrations when I was video-taping Mark Abramson for this post.

Unfortunately, a gentleman who plunked down in a seat just ahead of me and slightly to the left, spoiled some of the tantalizing footage.

Gosh, he was not unlike some extra on a movie set in Hollywood, who tries to get his mug on camera - and in the process - ends up upstaging the star.

When he noticed the video camera in my hand, for instance, his behaviour got downright bizarre.

At first, he half-turned in his chair, to try to get his profile in the shots!

Then, at one point, he actually bent over - smack dab in the middle of the lens - and took a moment to re-tie his running shoes!

Duh.

Was he there to actually take in the precious moments being offered up (for free) by the author - or - simply there to be ever-mindful that  his bootstraps were properly strung up?

On a couple of occasions, he also made a point of glancing at items on a shelf to our right.

When I looked over to see what was allegedly catching his eye, I was taken aback to see the items mostly consisted of toys (and games) for kids.

Pervert, perhaps?

Gosh, it was just a ploy to get on-camera!

At one point, I was tempted to lean over and point out that his inconsiderate behaviour was ruining shots I intended to post on the Internet to promote the author and his books.

In a nutshell, he was destroying golden opportunities meant for the writer, alright.

But, since I am a bit of a fatalist, I struggled through the sorry scenario without uttering a peep.

So, when you take a gander at the videos provided at the link(s) below, you'll understand why the author is closer to the left frame (and not centered).

I was trying to prevent the nutty fruitcake from weasling  his way into frame!

If  'ya notice a blur or two on the videos -  yup! - that's bits and pieces of his body parts (arm, head, etc.) floating in and out of the frame erratically which caught me off-guard.

Life in Baghdad by the sea, eh?

West Hollywood...rubble in the streets a hazard!

West Hollywood used to be a quaint little neighborhood on the edge of Beverly Hills.

In recent years, though, quite a few of the cozy little cottages that edged the leafy tree-lined streets have been torn down to make way for spanking-new designer digs.

Condos!

Unfortunately, the construction outfits erecting the jazzy high-priced accomdations have been careless in recent days in respect to their building habits and negligent in respect to resident safety.

For instance, if you stroll down any number of side streets between San Vicente Boulevard and Sweetzer Streets (to the East and West) - or from Sunset Boulevard to Melrose Avenue (to the North and South) - you will undoubtedly find yourself confronted with quite a few buckling side walks and scraps of garbage littered about the street that are an outright hazard to pedestrians and motorists alike.

I am surprised that City Council hasn't appointed someone to cruise the neighborhood and check up on these sites to ensure that the contractors are containing the rubble within the confines of the building area.

If there is such a person responsible for the task, he or she is obviously not doing their job or fulfilling their obligation to the community at large.

Will hapless victims have to fall down and hurt themselves in the street before any action will be taken by the City of West Hollywood to rectify this glaring problem?

What a sad state of affairs!

It's time we took the city back, don't you think???

Proposition 8...did 70% of Blacks vote down Gay Marriage? Are West Hollywood gays racist?

Yesterday, I posted a feature about Gay activists who protested the outcome of the Prop 8 initiative on Hollywood Boulevard the other evening, amid an overwhelming presence of riot police.

Some chastised the LAPD for "overkill".

Within minutes of posting, I was quite alarmed to receive a message from one blogger, who asserted that West Hollywood "gays" had it coming, essentially.

Here is what he said, verbatim:

on November 12, 2008 at 6:45 pm Monster 62

"I don’t know why that West Hollywood crowd are all pissed off at blacks because they voted 70% in support of Proposition 8. The reaction they are having toward blacks, etc. is “exactly” why they voted the way they did.

Everyone knows those Gays up in Weho are some of the most “racist” group of people unless it benefits “them”. Here’s some advice West Hollywood Group or Gay’s. How about trying to treat people the way you want to be treated.

If you all want Prop 8 passed one day and get the support — how about getting the support of these other “groups” and help them understand why they should support your cause. Calling people names and using the “slave derogatory word” won’t get you anywhere.

If anything it will make people vote against you. Final word, take “no one’s vote” for granite. Hatred and ignorance has no place in America anymore! If you want “America” to change — you have to start in your own house first."

Post: 11/12/08 http://www.julian1st.wordpress.com/

In my response comment, I noted - for starters - that there were more "blacks" living and working in WEHO than ever before.

And, I might add, in harmony with their neighbors!

I should know; after all, I've resided in West Hollywood for the past twenty years.

Frankly, Monster 62's response was out-of-line, if you ask me.

Not only have gays welcomed blacks, Mexicans - whomever - into the community with open arms, they also incorporated a city where gays and minorities could feel comfortable in their skin, at home in their sexuality, and free of discrimination.

Notwithstanding the obvious, when A.I.D.S. first broke out years ago, it was the gay community that reached out to all those inflicted when the government, straights, and the ignorant would not.

Despite skin color or sexual persuasion, gays offered medical services, shelter, food, and financial assistance.

The A.I.D.S. walk was also instituted, in a bold-faced effort to build a powerhouse of resources so scientists, doctors, and researchers could fight the disease and hasten a cure.

I find it appalling - if true, as Monster 62 alleges - that 70% of the Black community voted down Gay Marriage.

When gays jumped on the bandwagon, and started to back Obama in his bid to be 1st Black President of the United States, I recall penning a post that posed an all-important question of the Presidential hopeful.

Would Barack be urging his supporters to Vote "no" on Proposition 8?

If he took appropriate action, his voice must have fallen on deaf ears.

In retrospect, it appears that the Black Community stabbed all gays in the back.

Is that the thanks gays get for opening up their community in a spirit of humanity?

In view of what has transpired in recent days, I can only opine this.

Too bad we can't turn back the clock!

If blacks are unhappy with the gay lifestyle in West Hollywood, then they should find another community to leach off of.

They're a thorn in the community's side, otherwise!

Las Vegas...White Party! Circuit blast hosted by Jeffrey Sanker...

Well, the White Party kicks off next week in Las Vegas.

To gay men, it's comparable to the super bowl for straight guys.

From October 10th thru 13th - the exotic desert oasis will be inundated with a truckload or two of biceps and studly bods hailing from all corners of the civilized planet - Miami, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.

Uh-huh!

DJ Brett Henrichsen will rev up the dance floor at Friday's "BEACH BALL" event which will feature the hottest models in AUSSIEBUM swimwear.

Saturday's WHITE PARTY (DJ ABEL spinning) will take off at the trendy-setting HOUSE OF BLUES where a state-of-the-art concert sound and sizzling light show is sure to dazzle.

At press time - special appearances by LADY GAGA and Sagiv and Max (Cher Returns) - were firmed up.

While a number of the bodacious boys will kow-tow to tradition and dress to the nines in chic outerwear in pristine shades of white (with a strong display of tats and raw flesh) - a rebellious handful may go for the gusto in sultry black to thumb their noses at the crowd.

Upstarts!

The POOL PARTY at Mandalay Bay on Sunday promises to be the biggest splash of the year, though, with DJ Morningstar stirring up the senses.

But, the party-hearty, will still be dancing away 'til the wee hours at Sunday Night's Studio 54 Bash, in a backdrop that will feature wall-walkers, sensual videos, live dancers, and a spectacular light and sound show.

A pride of beauteous boys will no doubt be schmoozing, sashaying, strutting - and likewise - stroking away the night with caution thrown to the cool night breezes fluttering in off the desert.

When I asked a couple of pals if they planned to zip down to the desert hot spot this week, they shrugged.

"We're not into circuit parties."

Yes - the annual event is known to be part of the "circuit" - a high-profile boy-toy weekend out with a naughty reputation, to boot.

The phenomenon first sprang from early tea dances (wild rainbow-themed parties) tossed on Fire Island in the heady days of gay liberation a couple of decades ago.

The circuit soirees came on the heels of underground rave parties, and were run by savvy multi-sexual trend-setters, who publicized and professionally produced 'em with a lot pizzazz.

As a result, the must-attend parties attracted a scintillating social mix.

Show-biz music headliners were also booked to lure in the trendy jet-set.

While the parties are open to anyone these days, the circuit events are generally perceived as social hubs for the active gay man.

A big attraction?

The highly-touted offerings are typically lavish, prestigious affairs - with elaborate lighting, music, and decor with widespread appeal to the A-list man - held in venues that can accommodate their all-encompassing circle of friends.

But, the events are costly.

Even the most far-reaching party-goers don't attend all the events; after all, there are too many calendared across a wide expanse to afford a catch-all for most.

If a die-hard circuit officionado manages to pull off the stunt, then he's truly a golden circuit boy, by any stretch of the imagination.

Circuit parties are known to attract a broad demographic - from shy young dudes just out - to totally liberated gays in their mid-twenties and up active in the rainbow hub.

Expect to spy a handful of well-tooled silver-haired "daddies" in their 50s, too.

Couples in long-term relationships are still inclined to savor the events also.

In essence, the parties are a tribal cultural event.

Some say, circuit parties are analogous to a ritual holiday for the gay/lesbian/transgender community and a "celebration" of gay life, liberated sexuality, and freedom of expression.

In sum, the white party experience is a war cry that calls attention to the power, strength, and unity of the gay community.

Critics allege that circuit parties are a breeding ground for illicit drug abuse, though.

Throngs of young vibrant men, bent on partying all night - and enhancing each glorious sensual moment - are known to use the addictive booster "Tina" (known as meth and crystal).

For this reason, there has been a concerted effort by responsible members of the community to curb an outbreak of addiction, which has proven to be costly for many participants.

Some have lost their jobs, lovers, vibrant health, self-esteem - and a capacity to thirst for precious life - due to chronic addiction.

Many outreach programs have raised concerns about the underpinnings of circuit parties; particularly, with regard to the misuse of drugs (alcohol, marijuana, speed and ecstasy).

The warnings about potential overdose, dehydration, and impaired judgment (leading to unsafe sex and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases) have been underscored, but often fall on deaf ears.

In fact, circuit parties have been blamed for crystal addiction and the rampant transmission of a handful of virulent sexually-transmitted diseases - such as HIV and Hepatitis - among gay men within the borders of North America.

Notwithstanding, the circuit parties have been bad-mouthed on the grounds that they are superficial, too.

The whole emphasis, for example, appears to be on looks, sexual appeal, and being with the "in" crowd.

If you feel embarrassed about taking your shirt off, then you may feel uncomfortable at the Las Vegas weekend blast.

After all, guys around the country have been working out for months to sculpt the perfect body to show off at the extravaganza next weekend.

When these dudes toss off their "T's", to reveal perfect pecs and rippling abs, heads will swoon.

An adrenalin rush for everyone, no doubt.

But, the cries of hedonism are not unfounded.

Just flip through any major gay lifestyle magazine. Half the ads are for plastic surgery, nose jobs, and teeth whitening. The other fifty percent are blurbs for lawyers who specialize in DUI's and lewd conduct in public places.

Does this reflect the underbelly of the gay culture, warts and all?

No matter, just because a handful of revelers are inclined to overindulge, doesn't mean you can't get away for a zesty day or two of fun in the desert with your "brothers and sisters".

The VIP high-profile events have been orchestrated by pro party person - affable Jeffrey Sanker - the undisputed "King of White".

A few years ago, as I was munching on a salad at the front counter at the ever-popular French Marketplace, Sanker and I engaged in idle chit-chat.

Of course, I didn't have a clue who the young hottie was.

In the course of the conversation, I guess I dropped a bombshell, when I innocently batted my eyelashes and quipped.

"And, what do you do?"

"I throw parties," he responded without hesitation.

Later, I learned that was quite an understatement, if ever there was one.

But, you don't have to attend all the scintillating events, or haul your a** into the dark starry night 24/7.

Or fall prey to peer pressure, either.

Just drop down on the sidelines at the pool party, sip on an exotic cocktail or two, and quietly take in a few rays.

Or, top off a day of sight-seeing with an energy-boosting appearance at one of the party extravaganzas later in the evening, before heading home.

Say "no" to Tina, though!

Last Supper...gay blasphemy!

Just yesterday, I encountered a publicity still promoting San Francisco's Annual Folsom Street leather celebration...

I was shocked by the sight!

The fetish club used Leonardo Da Vinci's famous religious painting, "The Last Supper", as a model for its ad, with notable transformations...

In place of the disciples, the leather enthusiasts inserted images of drag queens, and individuals cavorting in outlandish sexually-inspired costumes, to celebrate their kinky cause.

What else would you call it?

In particular, items on the table featured prominently in the original masterpiece, were replaced with dildos and all manner of sex paraphanelia - of intrigue and worthy of exhaltation to their discerning membership, no doubt.

Frankly, the whole scenario was a gross error in judgment!

In recent years, because of the outbreak of HIV, the lifestyle and sexual practices of homosexual men came under scrutiny by religious figures, the media, and the American people in general.

When it was revealed that there were wild, deviant, unsafe sexual encounters rampant in the "gay" community, there was a lot of finger-pointing.

In heated arguments, all around the Nation, many argued,

"No wonder so many homosexuals are being infected with a modern-day version of the 'great plague'."

In the wake of this vicious attack - many influential celebs, politicians, and high-ranking members of the community - stood tall in support of the gay lifestyle, and for good reason.

Their vigorous efforts were pursued in a bold-faced attempt to end the discrimination, the unfair treatment of those inflicted with the killer disease, and put a screeching halt to the witch-hunts which were damning, to many.

Now, in spite of all this "past history", for some inexplicable reason, the Folsom Street Fair had the audacity, in my estimation, to craft and distribute a promotional tool that was not only an insult to Christians and decent citizens across the country, but an outright blasphemy!

One does not further the "gay cause" by deviantly trashing a symbol of the Catholic faith...

Homosexuality used to be referred to as the "love that dare not speak its name", but today, it appears to be the love that "won't shut up".

In my opinion, if you're gay, bisexual, straight - whatever - it's okay in our intelligent, sophisticated, adult-permissive society to pursue those romantic pursuits ardently, and without shame...

But in a civilized society, there are some rules that go hand-in-hand with the privilege, without saying.

All participants should act with discretion, proceed in a healthy, nurturing way, and profess their love with dignity.

The recent conduct of the Folsom Street "gang" was irresponsible, disturbing, and a slap in the face to the whole community.

I say, shame!

If there is a backlash towards the gay lifestyle in the future, I can only sadly conclude from this corner of the world that they - to paraphrase a line in the hit musical - "Chicago - "had it coming"...
