Medical problems...early diagnosis & treatment important!

A battery of doctors search for medical treatment!

This past week, I was thrust into a frightening situation that underscored how important it is to have a medical problem properly diagnosed - and promptly  treated, of course - to ensure the ailment is held at bay and under control (if not cured outright).

The sun was lazily beating down from a cloudless pristine blue sky, when I slowed to a halt at the curb at Market Street and Church to obey a red light day-before-yesterday in the Castro District.

When the signal changed, I started to step forward into the crosswalk, when - suddenly without warning - my leg muscles seized up from the knees down to the ankles making it difficult to maneuver.

Imagine trying to trying to walk on limbs made of sticks - without any joints or flexibility to help propel ’ya along - that’s what the terrifying experience was like.

But, the nightmare was far from over.

As I struggled to regain control over my over my lower limbs, I lost my balance.

For the next few minutes, I found myself flailing my arms in the air trying to regain an upright position, so I could quickly limp out-of-harm’s way.

The light had changed - and at this point - I nearly fell backward into an oncoming vehicle turning out of a side street onto Market.

I was in a panic.

Meanwhile, a few passers-by stood a few feet away, staring at me in disbelief.

Did they think I was a sailor who blew-into-town with the fleet - and after a couple of stiff ones - was two  sheets to the wind?

Within about five minutes, the cramping dissipated, and I was right as rain.

But, a terrible pall - deep depression - fell over me.

For the past year, I have suffered these unexpected crippling bouts of muscles cramps - in the feet, and the legs - even the stomach on occasion - without any relief on the horizon.

I have discussed the ailment with a half-a-dozen doctors over the past few months, but none of the physicians have been able to fathom the origins of the sudden attacks which descend on me without mercy at whim.

One doctor speculated I may be low on potassium, so he offered up a prescription, with the aim of resolving the problem.

Nope!

I still wake up in the middle of the night in deep pain.

Often, my hands cramp up, when I am inputting data into my laptop.

The fingers are so gnarled at the start of the episode, that I am unable to complete the task at hand, or even turn off the computer.

Shortly after these violent attacks descend out-of-the-blue - they disappear just as quickly - at which point I plummet into a deep funk unsure about which way to turn.

But, the muscle spasms this week on the street, were the most terrifying  to date.

What's going to happen to me?

I shudder to think!

Is there a doctor on the West Coast familiar with my mystery illness that can properly diagnose and treat my ailment?

I pen and publish this post with optimism.

I pray that it is so.

Chelsea Clinton...making a difference with CHAI (Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative)! Donate today...

When Chelsea Clinton was trotted out on the campaign trail last fall to rustle up some votes from her own age group, I was a little reticent about jumping on the band wagon.

In spite of the fact I very rarely found fault with Chelsea per se - after all, she carried herself well and acted in good taste whenever she appeared on behalf of her Mom at public and political rallies - it was the woman, Hillary Clinton, who kept me snickering from afar.

Nope, I never warmed up to the pant-suited politician gave me the willies (no pun intended) and made me feel ill at ease.

Hillary was just too disingenuous - in the words of the PREZ - and conniving for the good of the country, in my estimation.

Whitewater was always at the back of mind, fanning the flames of doubt, too!

Now that Obama is firmly ensconced in the White House, and Hillary is Secretary of State, I did not expect to hear a peep out of Chelsea again.

Wrong!

Young Chelsea has taken up a cause.

The pretty young gal is now involved with project CHAI, a project funded under the auspices of her father's charitable organization, The William Clinton Foundation.

In her communication, Chelsea informed me how exciting her involvement with CHAI has been to date.

"This summer, I had the great opportunity of traveling to Africa with my father, where we met Jean Pierre, a young boy in a rural village in Rwanda. Jean Pierre is alive and well today because of the antiretroviral treatments that the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) was able to make accessible to him."

"Jean Pierre told us that he wants to grow up to be a doctor and give more people a chance to live a healthy life.

"Jean Pierre's story is inspiring, not just because he's benefiting from the work of everyone at CHAI, but also because he's leading by example with his lifetime goal of giving back and serving others through medicine."

Chelsea impressed upon me her hope that generous Americans will consider supporting CHAI and the Clinton Foundation's work in the U.S. and around the globe in a myriad of ways, but specifically by virtue of a donation.

"Gifts of any size make a very real difference," she noted passionately.

For example, $15 provides a life-saving food package for an HIV-positive child for one month, while $30 pays for 15 dosing tools for physicians and pharmacists to help accurately dose children on HIV/AIDS treatment.

A generous gift of $80 ensures that eight community health workers can provide monitoring of adherence and medication intake for all HIV-positive people in a Malawian village for a week.

And believe it or not, $150 provides access to medical care and support -including transport to and from a treatment center, counseling, and nutrition - to one HIV-positive child in India for a year.

Why not consider coughing up some dough today, eh?

In addition to CHAI, it appears that there are other worthy causes on the agenda at the Foundation, too.

Patrick Swayze...tabloid gossip on illness cruel and insensitive!

I was standing in line at a check-out counter at the supermarket a couple of weeks ago when I spied a screaming headline on the cover of a tabloid magazine.

Patrick Swayze dying!"

I recall recoiling in horror.

How cruel and insensitive!

The same thought crossed the talented actor's mind, too.

Although Mr. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he has been valiantly fighting the disease. In fact, he is responding to treatment, and winning the battle.

Still stinging from the hurt, Mr. Swayze angrily noted to the legitimate press:

"They're reporting that I'm on my last legs and saying good-bye to my tearful family. It's upsetting that the shoddy and reckless reporting from these publications cast a negative shadow on the positive and good fight I'm fighting."

At a time when "hope is precious", he can only shake his head in disbelief.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Prying into - and reporting on - highly confidential medical records without the knowledge or permission of an individual - is a shocking and disturbing trend in a "no-holds-barred" kind of gossip-mongering which must be condemned - and ultimately - stopped in its tracks.

If the shoe were on the other foot, I hazzard a guess that the insensitive intruders might be angry, too.

George Eliot once said:

Cruelty, like every other vice, requires no motive outside of itself; it only requires opportunity."
