Stomp...auditions in New York City! April 25th! Break a leg!

The successful stage production - STOMP - is holding open auditions in New York City on April 25th.

The try-outs will be held at The Orpheum Theatre.

STOMP, is an exciting night of dazzling entertainment which features a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy.

After a 10 year collaboration, the creators - Steve McNicholas & Luke Cresswell - crafted a stage show that has been packing houses around the globe since its first inception in the summer of 1991.

The original cast of STOMP recorded music for the "Tank Girl" film soundtrack and also contributed to the Quincy Jones album "Q’s Jook Joint".

A soundtrack recorded by Cresswell and McNicholas for the Showtime Movie - “Riot" - was released in the Spring of ’97.

STOMP has also been featured in slick eye-popping commercials which include a handful for Coca-Cola’s Ice Pick, Target stores in the US, Toyota in Japan, and "Seat" in Europe.

More recently, STOMP was commissioned to create and produce the "Lost and Found Orchestra" which took the ideas behind Stomp to a symphonic level (in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival).

The LFO performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007 and at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The show was reworked and renamed for a US tour in 2010 and titled:

Pandemonium: the Lost and Found Orchestra

American Idol...Ellen criticized by morning Disc Jockeys! Lighten upl...

As I was flipping the dial on the car radio this morning, I stumbled across a couple of jocks panning Ellen DeGeneres in respect to her new stint as a judge on American Idol.

The main thrust of their potshots?

"She's a comedian. That's what we expect to get from her," one chided in so many words.

"Ellen's taking it all too seriously," another piped in.

In the final analysis, the morning plattter-spinners concluded that because there already were a couple of  qualified judges (from a musical standpoint) on the panel, that the perky talk-show host (who pines to do a two-step now and then on her own show) should stick to what she does best.

But, the truth of the matter is, it is not always possible to zip off zingers non-stop that touch the funny bone.

Or, conjure of a bit of schtick that's going to hit the mark on each and every breathless occasion.

For example, last week the wide-eyed comedian attempted to rustle up a gaggle of giggles, by toying with one of the contestants in the throes of uttering up her decision.

"I know I shouldn't make you wait for my decision," she confessed with a straight face.

Silence.

"So, I'm just going to get to it."

Silence.

"Because, that would be unfair, of course. To make your wait."

Although that wasn't it verbatim, you get the gist.

The bit was so old, it was grey.

And, in spite of the fact Ellen usually has expert comic timing - on this occasion - it fell flat.

When Ellen first agreed to take on the post, the press roundly reported her stance on what it meant for her to be a judge on American Idol.

If  I recall correctly, Ms. DeGeneres admitted she was not an expert on the subject of music - and that her opinions on talent and stage presence - would stem from the fact she was a typical person who was a music lover pulling for the contestants from the sidelines.

Auditions are tough, after all.

I expect that having a major player on the panel - who is less foreboding a prospect than Simon Cowell (who tends to glare down his snotty nose at contestants) - is helpful in getting an audition off on the right note!

In that regard, Ellen's a worthwhile contribution to the mix.

Maybe she just needs to strike a better balance with her material.

It's all a matter of gaining her stride, I guess.

Give the kid a break, eh, Dudes?

Actors...ALAP (Playwright Group) seeks performers for readings and workshops!

The Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights is seeking actors to perform in play readings, workshops, and full productions.

In order to be considered for an audition, interested performers are invited to sign up at the ALAP database so that playwrights will be able to browse head shots and resumes to locate suitable thespians for upcoming projects.

Signing up for the ALAP database is free!

Before cruising over to their web site to participate, it is important to note that ALAP requests that all those who sign up act professionally at all times and fulfill all agreed-upon obligations.

For instance, in the event an actor needs to withdraw for any reason (due to a work assignment or an unexpected family obligation) ALAP requests that individuals do so in a responsible way by giving the playwright sufficient time to recast.

Contact information provided to the stage writers will not be shared with non-ALAP members without an actor's consent.

L.A. Actor...new glossy mag for performers. Pick up on newstands, now!

Ah, there is a hot new magazine on the stands with a catchy title - L.A. Actor.

It sure is a welcome addition to the local Southern California performing arts scene.

The slick - well-thought out entry - reminds me of the old "Drama-Logue" weekly that used to be a literal "bible" for all the struggling thespians in Hollywood striving for that elusive break in the biz.

The premier edition features Harrison Ford on a glossy cover.

Inside, there are a number of practical features that are sure to add luster to any young actor's tools of the trade.

For instance, there is an insider feature on how to break into commercials. A toughie, I know, since I traversed that well-travelled road in my younger macaroni & cheese days.

There's also a useful guide with audition tips.

In fact, there's also a section on "Casting Notices", in the event a talented few are without a Theatrical Agent doing their bidding, yet.

By the way, don't be disheartened about that.

When I was in-between reps, I submitted myself to casting offices - and on a couple of fortuitous occasions - landed an audition. And - in spite of what the naysayers thought about agent-less-submissions - snatched up the assignment, too!

So, "never say never". Keep the faith, eh?

An informative article on A.C.T. (Actors Comprehensive Training) may be of particular interest to those just starting to nose their way around the lot without much experience under the belt, as well.

One of their staffers notes A.C.T.'s mission is to,

"Bring together the community and help each other network."

When first launching a career in Tinsel town, an unknown actor needs all the help he can get, trust me!

And when they say "trust me", don't!

The industry periodical also has a list of casting directors and agents to submit pictures and resumes to.

Heck, that saves a lot of time going through the yellow pages, or the aggravation of hot-footing it up to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) or AFTRA (the American Federation of Radio & TV Artists) to snap up a list.

If you're looking for some exposure, or just keen on impressing a handful of friends, L.A. Actor also has a centerfold section where an enterprising performer keen on self-promotion can plop down a few bucks to have a head shot printed alongside other struggling actors in an upcoming issue.

Who knows, you might be discovered - kid!

But, remember what Walter Winchell said,
"Hollywood is where they shoot too many pictures and not enough actors."
