THE X FACTOR...Virtual auditions! Simon Cowell scours for Talent!

If you're a performer, who was unable to attend open call auditions for  - X FACTOR - Simon Cowell is reaching out "virtually".

For example, X FACTOR  producers have whipped up a handful of state-of-the art audition booths, that will be installed at shopping malls in out-of-the-way communities, to facilitate auditions for a posse of singers chomping-at-the-bit to be "discovered".

At stake?

A $5 million-dollar recording contract!

"We're extending auditions to six more cities," beamed the host of the upcoming entertainment show - styled after American Idol - on Fox TV.

Potential contestants who reside in neighborhoods around the country near - Anchorage, Denver, Honolulu, Kansas City, Phoenix, and  Nashville - just lucked out!

"America has the best talent in the world and we're looking for the best of the best. We believe the next global superstar is out there waiting to be discovered," a spokesperson at Fox beamed.

"We think MyStudio is a brilliant way to audition for those people who haven't been able to make it to the open calls," Cowell underscored at a press conference in recent days.

Throughout April - anyone 12 years of age or older (solo artists  & vocal groups) - can use the nifty booths to record their auditions.

Break a leg, eh?

The X Factor...Simon Cowell auditions in Newark, Seattle & Dallas! Catch a rising star!

Cowell's virile hairy factor!

In a recent e-mail, Simon Cowell - the former American Idol Judge - posed a pointed question.

Do you - or a friend or a family member - have what it takes to become a global superstar?

Uh-huh!

The feisty Brit - known for his caustic wit - is out to rustle up a bevy of unknown singing sensations to showcase on his upcoming variety entertainment show.

The X Factor!

Cowell is launching the project - a version of which is fairing well in the ratings on the boob tube in jolly old England - in the fall on Fox TV.

X Factor - which Cowell describes as a "make-it-or-break-it" vocal competition - is different than the current fodder proliferating on the airwaves (such as American Idol and Dancing with the Stars) because there are no restrictions.

Solo singers, vocal groups - and anyone over the age of 12 - have the chance to win a $5 million recording deal with Sony Music.

You got it!

There's no "upper age" limit!

Performers - who are under the impression that they have what it takes to make it big in show-biz - are encouraged to audition for the Judges.

Although try-outs have already commenced in a couple of major cities around the country, there are three open calls in April (one in May) that performers may attend in Newark, Seattle, Chicago, and Dallas.

Now is your chance!

Who knows, you may just walk away with a $5 million recording contract, eh?

STEP-BY-STEP AUDITION INFO

American Idol...kicks off with rubber-faced Steven Tyler & stylish Jennifer Lopez!

Ameican Idol returns to kick off a fresh season with one noticeable difference.

Viewers at home won't be treated to the caustic wit of the bitchy brit when the lights go up tonight on the Prime Time Network TV entertainment show.

Uh-huh!

The irascible - Simon Cowell - exited the highly-rated Karaoke-style bill-of-fare many moons ago amidst a storm of controversy.

Fans have a couple of lovable upstarts on the panel of Judges this season to root for, however, that are expected to get their Idol juices flowing.

Rubber-faced Steven Tyler (did he have plastic surgery or what?) will try his hand at the celebrated task of weeding out potential pop winners from loser shower-crooners, with ultra-chic chanteuse - Jennifer Lopez - at his rocking-and-rolling side.

By the way - Ryan Seacrest was so fired up about the big night - that he posted a VIDEO on his web page which afforded fans the opportunity to take a boo at the craft of studio voice-over work over at the American Idol recording studios.

The VID features the cast of American Idol players laying tracks for tonight's much-anticipated launch!

Seacrest's message was crystal clear.

"I tell 'ya!  I'm not going!"

That's right.

Mr. Congeniality - and all-round favorite pop jock - is staying on for the long haul.

That, in spite of the fact the critics are predicting doom and gloom, for the upcoming season.

Yup!

In response to pledges from the producers to be civil to contestants (and each other) this year, pundits are predicting that "playing nice" just isn't going to pan out in the cut-throat ratings game.

The proof is in the pudding, eh?

The overnight ratings will reveal all, if 'ya ask moi!

Dave Letterman...Ooops moment! Ryan Seacrest pot shots! Say what, Paula Abdula?

Boy, that was quite an Oops! moment last night on the Dave Letterman show!

Do you suppose the head honcho at Worldwide Pants (Dave Letterman) fired a camera operator at the crack of dawn this morning?

Or - just maybe - a stage manager's head will get the axe later in the day.

Who knows!

Bottom line?

There was definitely a slip up in communication somewhere along the line.

The unthinkable occurred about half-way through the highly-rated talk show.

On a return from commercial break - suddenly (without warning) - viewers at home found themselves staring at a ghastly shot of Dave bent over his desk (caught in the act of snatching up a scrap of paper off the floor) with a bald spot "comb over" on the crown of his head in plain view!

Judging by the embarrassed look on his face, I surmise that Dave was unaware that he was on air , when he finally righted himself in the chair.

When the cameraman quickly cut-away to Paul Shaffer - the awkward look on the bandleader's face said it all  - you betcha!

Uh-huh!

Dave got caught with his pants down!

Ouch!

For some inexplicable reason, Letterman had the knives out for Ryan Seacrest last night.

After mentioning a bit of scuttlebutt about a guest referring to themselves as a "douche bag" on a New Years show (hosted by the perky DJ and Dick Clark on another network) Dave was inclined to issue a cautionary warning to everyone within earshot in the event they were not in the "know" about Ryan.

"That Seacrest guy pulled a Jay Leno. Got them all fired. He's the one with all the money, 'ya know," he kidded.

At the end of the segment (and at the close of the show) the camera focused on a blow-up photograph of Ryan Seacrest tacked to the studio wall - all smiles - in spite of the fact he was not a guest on the show.

Bizarre!

But, Paul Abdul's interview was the most intriguing, to say the least.

Reluctant to initially reveal the specific details of her new dance show - slated to broadcast tonight on CBS - Dave was forced to joist with her a bit (the segment was painful to watch and tantamount to pulling teeth ) to get his money's worth.

Ms. Abdul is either in denial or just totally clueless.

For instance, when Dave quizzed her as to the whereabouts of Simon Cowel these days, she tried to subtly insult the former American Idol Judge she once worked alongside.

"Oh, he's doing a small show," she uttered up with a straight face.

When asked how much she liked Cowell, she was quick on the uptake.

"About this much," she teased, as she used her fingers to elaborate her point.

If you read between the lines, you probably figured it out.

Abdul, who has allegedly slept with Cowell, was inferring that he wasn't very well hung.

As to the show, Abdul was referring to X Factor - an overseas hit that Cowell is currently involved with  - expected to fair well when it launches in the U.S.

If Ms. Abdul appeared on the Late Show with the aim of changing her image - without doubt - she failed miserably.

How long is this scorned woman going to try to save face, as she continues to make a fool of herself on Network TV in front of an amused world?

X Factor...sleazy Christina Aguilera tease causes uproar in England! Simon says...

Hell hath no fury like a prudish English bloke scorned!

Just ask the tattlers at the fleet street tabloids across the big pond.

Ofcom, the British watchdog that regulates the airwaves in normally-jolly old England, has announced that they will conduct an investigation stemming from a raucous incident which scandalized Brits in recent days on snooty Simon Cowell's popular telly entertainment Show (X-Factor).

And - you thought that Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake - boobed the light-fantastic a moon or two ago - eh?

Ha!

According to sources, Christina Aguilera is in the hot seat for stripping down to sexy sweet-nothings impromptu - in front of approximately 14 million viewers.

To some - a heart-pumping-performance of two tunes from the soundtrack of her new flick (meant to evoke the raunchy appeal of pole dancing while boosting potential Burlesque ticket sales) - was "too orgasmic" for the dinner hour between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the evening.

In fact, a daily rag published out of London, labelled the daring show-stoppers featuring Aguilera (and Rihanna) an outright "storm of sleaze".

In fact, one journalist lamented:
"The message it sends out to a young and impressionable audience is so debasing and depressing."

Although a spokesperson for X-Factor swore up-and-down that the titillating gyrations were "appropriate" - a hail of angry tirades from viewers - tended to infer in the ugly mud-slinging aftermath it was simply not the case.

Ofcome was allegedly inundated with a flood of complaints - 2,750 - to be exact.

And, ITV - which aired the dirty laundry cum bill-of-fare - received 1500 protests criticizing the racy sexually implicit rant.

At this juncture, the meaning of "X" in the show's title, must be painfully obvious by now.

Simon should re-title the hit - "The Bump 'N Grind Effect" - eh?

American Idol...Ellen DeGeneres bows out as Judge! Not right fit...

Viewers knew it before she did, but at long last Ellen DeGeneres finally saw the light, woke up and smelled the coffee, whatever!

The perky talk-show host - with the quirky two-steps - wasn't cut out for the role of intense discerning Judge on American Idol when it got down to brass tacks.

So, she tweeted the news to her fans!

"I'm outta there, folks."

Although the announcement may have been untimely - grumpy old Simon Cowell is also departing to develop his spanking-new offering - Fear Factor - Fox Network Execs weren't taken by surprise.

No temper tantrums for Ellen, not even any coy game-playing, in a bid for higher bucks.

'Cause she's classy, all the way.

Like any seasoned thoughtful pro, the popular afternoon talk-show host gave advance notice.

While admitting that her plate was basically full - and that her duties at Fox were tipping the balance of things a tad - she was up front and honest about the obvious.

"I didn't like hurting people's feelings," she fessed up.

Unlike Simon Cowell, who often left young hopefuls discouraged about the future and in a puddle of tears for family and fans (and Ryan Seacrest) to mop up!

So, the hustle is on, once again.

Who (are) the next likely candidates to take up the coveted spots?

How about a regular Joe rotating each week (selected by weekly give-a-way).

That might be a hilarious twist, in-of-itself!

And, a roster of Judges plucked up from popular daytime and nightime TV shows may have a lot of audience appeal?

I'd even take a shot, if Ryan promised to share a beauty secret or two back stage.

I confess, a tip on hair conditioner may do wonders for my unruly mop, which one fan compared to a Steve McQueen "do".

My favorite compliment from a stranger who came up to me on the street one day?

"You look like Peter O'Toole. When he was young and glamorous."

Now, that's a hoot!

American Idol...Lee DeWyze nabs it! Simon Cowell bids adieu

Joe Cocker rocked the stage, the audience paid tribute to Simon Cowell, and the new American Idol - Lee DeWyze - stoood speechless on the stage shaking his head.

"How did you feel when your name was called," Ryan Seacrest quizzed the winner.

"There are no words to describe it," DeWyze responded wide-eyed.

The build-up to that precious moment was not unlike a pilgramage on a long-and-winding road dotted with sheltering valleys and treacherous peaks along the way.

Joe Cocker (celebrated Woodstock hold-out) delighted the audience with a live performance of - "With A little help from my friends" - for instance.

Hall and Oates - a little long in the tooth - brought a smile to the face nonetheless.

American Idol interspersed the stage performances with a handful of hilarous clips from prior shows - mostly video footage of contestants  screwing up - which dredged up fond memories and a poignant moment or two.

In what amounted to a lowpoint of the night, Paula Abdul stormed the stage to put in her two cents worth.

Ms. Abdul couldn't resist twisting the knife in a bit - as she discussed her relationship with Simon Cowell on "Idol" - which had been volatile at best.

Within minutes of hearing her grating voice sound off, I found myself screaming at the old boob tube.

"Would someone get the hook and pull her of the stage, please?"

On the heels of this segment of dead space, American Idol paid tribute to Simon Cowell, who is  exiting the top-rated entertainment show this season.

Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox were stunned when American Idol gifted each with a souped-up vehicles courtesy of Ford.

Surprise high-energy performances by Brett Michaels and Alice Cooper were a highlight.

In some respects, Americn Idol was a cliffhanger, with enough thrills and chills to satisfy everyone.

American Idol...Casey bites dust! Justin Bieber a hit!

An electric stage performance by Justin Bieber drove pretty bodacious babes into a frenzy, Idol hometown visits - in what amounted to Hero's welcomes - brought tears to the eye, and a Perez hopeful stormed the stage to take a grab at the brass ring.

On one of those rare occasions, the Judges were weepy, too.

In fact,  all four struggled  to hold back tears - but ended up wearing their hearts on their sleeves - nonetheless.

What an emotional night!

When the big 3 finalists graced the Idol stage - somehow - it all seemed right.

The scuttlebutt this past week at water coolers around the Nation was ominous for the sexy heartthrob.

Casey's "got to go" appeared to be the mantra.

For the handsome stud it had been a thrill ride, of sorts.

As his popularity soared into the stratosphere, the low-key musician often accommodated the scheming shifty-eyed  producers looking to exploit his - um - talent.

The soap contender tossed off his shirt right, left, and center to boost the ratings and win over a female (or male) fan or two at the drop of a hat, in fact.

But, when push came to shove, the people had spoken.

Last night Casey sang his swan song.

Now - Katie Bowersox and Lee DeWiez - are left to belt it out next week in the finals!

The one that nabs the golden prize will probably be climbing the charts shortly after that - the potent power of an Idol plaudit - is that sweet and promising.

To underscore that point?

It  didn't escape my attention that during the course of watching the show, a band singer in the lounge of my Hotel downstairs, chose Adam Lambert's catchy tune - What do you Want for me? - to open her set.

There were a number of surprises last night - enough jolts and adrenalin  rushes - to satisfy even the toughest critics.

For instance, Ryan Seacrest suddenly announced that Perez Hilton was on hand, to introduce a young performer that he "discovered".

Perez - in black "t" (with a ubiquitous caption etched on its face) and jeans beamed

"So, what did you see in Travis Garland," the metrosexual man of-the-hour pointedly asked the Queen of the Blogs.

Did I hear a snicker or two in the audience?

"The fact that he is better than Justin Timberlake."

Unfortunately, that did not turn out to be the case.

Ah, the prooof is in the pudding, as they say.

I found his dance routine sluggish.

After all, it appeared he was trying to recall tricky steps that his backup dancers performed with ease.

The tune - Believe - was mediocre at best.

Efforts by the studio suits to jazz up the number with a myriad of nifty effects didn't manage to disguise the fact the composition was weak and nothing to write home about.

Perez, what were you thinking?

Multi-talented Timberlake must be having a big laugh this morning.

Don't look for a day job, Justin.

In one touching moment, Crystal Bowersox was reunited with her young child, as family and loved ones gazed on choked up with emotion.

Is Ms. Bowersox part of a biker clan?

At a big blow out, the Mayor of the City presented Bowersox with the key to her home town, Toledo.

Crystal later held a concert in the park - Bowerstock - which was packed with well-wishers and signaled the innovative musician is on her way into the big leagues.

Very deserving!

American Idol...Katie's swan song! Adam Lambert tears up stage! Idol gives back...

American Idol started off tonight with a sly innuendo.

With a sweeping gesture to the contestants on stage, Ryan Seacrest quipped with a straight face.

“I give you the top nine."

Catch that?

It was right up there with Ellen’s comment that one singer’s performance was horny.

No, Ellen didn’t have the hots for the nubile young babe, to my knowledge.

She was referring to the horn section which buttressed the segment up during the performance.

By the way, the intro to American Idol was electric.

At the top of Fox's hit show, clips featured flash-backs of Idol contestants in the midst of sets, interspersed with dazzling shots of Vegas nightlife.

A medley of Elvis hits - though a bit pedestrian - put the rapt audience in a great mood.

The highlight here was “Teddy Bear” which teased fans affectionately.

Producers satisfied the desires of the thronging masses with up-close-and-personal candid shots of their favorite performers.

Indeed, when artists in full song strode full-frame into camera, they must have caused hearts to flutter at home.

The rendition of "Return to Sender" was a little too cheery and lacked bite.

Listen to the lyrics, kids!

Elvis was frustrated about the fact his passionate letters were being returned post haste unopened and unread.

Casey’s interaction with the judges in this segment underscored there is a mischievous likeable dude underneath the stoic shell he presents to the world.

Lee’s playing to camera was a turn-on for fans, no doubt.

He has that teddy bear quality about him that girls (and guys) snuggle up to.

But, all eyes were on Adam Lambert last night!

Adam Lambert, rising Pop Icon, appeared in a swirl of lasers on stage.

From a symbolic standpoint, he appeared to be locked inside a cocoon, at first.

As the camera panned in, the Idol legend was captured in silhouette in a breathtaking shot or two, that was worth the price of admission (ha!).

Then, after he wailed soulfully a moment or two, he busted out with the catchy infectious lyrics.

"What do 'Ya  want from me?"

Amid a dazzling spray of blinding lights - and a riot of captivating musical indulgences - Adam Lambert proceeded to strut the stage cocky, confident, in charge and in control.

What a dynamite show-stopping performance!

Down 'n dirty, soulful, other-worldly.

Surely, he  gave David Bowie a run for his money.

Tonight, was an emotional turning point for the competitors, no wonder.

A “double elimination” would close the show-biz door on 2 hopefuls pining to stay through the final stages of the ratings-getting show.

As Sinatra would say, that's life.

In a surprise built-in promo, Ryan Seacrest noted that American Idol was going green.

Cut to singers in the street astride fuel-guzzling autos when - poof - the clunkers suddenly disintegrate before the audiences's very eyes.

In their place, fuel-efficient green vehicles sprang up in their place, natch.

“Follow the day and reach for the sun” was the catchy upbeat slogan the songbirds chirped proudly to all within earshot.

Get this, viewers may cruise over to the Idol site, and enter a contest to win an Idol-inspired Ford Fiesta.

Meanwhile, back at the Fox lot, the drama strarted to unfold in the first elimination round.

Fans went wild when Ryan asked Casey to stand up and have a chat.

Liked his shirt, by the way. Cool.

Aaron, unfortunately, rustled up a timid response when he was asked to stand in the huddle to face the music, too.

Andrew savored a moment or two in the sun, before bowing his head in anticipation of the drum roll, next up.

As the three stood in line, facing the gun, the audience held their collective breath.

Talk about high drama

When the camera panned to Simon, for some inexplicable reason, he was flushed.

Too many drinkie poo's?

Or, too long under the sun lamp, perhaps?

Just maybe, he was keeping a lid on things in view of his recent spats with fans in the audience?

In a recap prior to the axe falling, it was underscored that that there wasn’t much hound dog (or swagger) in Andrew’s stab at Elvis.

“The coolness was sucked out of you.”

Ouch.

Without much drawn-out-drama after that - Andrew was banished by Ryan - just like that.

No build up. No nothing.

Andrew's last song to the audience, in the final analysis, appeared to signal why he was shown the door.

Talk about a forgetable mediocre performance!

Even still, the other contestants swarmed the lad on stage at the end of his swan song, in a heartfelt attempt to console the optimistic crooner.

In my humble opinion?

He overstayed his welcome.

At this juncture, producers cut away to a promo for "Idol Gives Back" which broadcasts next week (featuring inspirational songs).

Seacrest noted there is still a good selection of auction items available to bid for online.

Since the funds go to charity, check it out, eh?

Also, Idol partnered with Exxon to help the impoverished (suffering from hunger and disease) in Angola, Africa.

In a touching clip, plans underway for a new dormitory to house the homeless, was  uplifting to watch.

The organization has been providing "nets" to prevent the spread of malaria, too.

Malaria kills 3000 people a day in that troubled nation.

A net, which costs a mere $10.00, can save (and has prolonged) lives in Africa.

An upcoming concert will feature headliners such as Sir Elton John, Annie Lennox, Black-eyed Peas, and others.

Tickets may be purchased at Ticketmaster.

A live on-stage performance - of a tune Elvis made a hit - was beautifully performed on Idol by two artists (on piano & guitar) by the names of Brooke and Justin respectively.

Their song styling of -  "If I could Dream" (was that the exact title?) - was vastly entertaining.

Popular Seacrest noted that it can be downloaded on I-Tunes for free.

Idol is introducing a new feature - Mom Idol - as well.

The show is searching for amazing moms to celebrate.

Check the Idol site for details.

With all that out of the way, the lights were dimmed, and the second elimination commenced.

At this juncture, audience members got quite vocal, and more emotionally involved.

Lee, when asked, noted his performances didn't feel like auditions at this stage of the contest.

"I'm doing a show and enjoying myself."

Simon said he nailed the tune.

Katie Stevens, Ryan recalled, was considered annoying in some quarters.

Randy said she exhibited a confident sassy side, though.

Ellen’s horny comment (aforementioned) unfortunately went over people’s heads for the most part.

I got it.

But, I’m a fan of bad puns, so you figure it out.

Katie expressed the sentiment that she wanted to grow each week as much as possible.

“I’ve done that, I think. I hope so, anyway.”

Michael lynch got a lot of applause in the elimination line-up.

“I love the Judges and the people," he beamed.

He felt grateful for every moment he assued the attentive fans pulling for him.

Crystal Bowersox, a favorite, was described as the second coming of Bonnie Rae.

Tim Urban was lauded for his best performance to date.

Ellen compared his set to the first shot of tequila.

"You've gone from zero to hero," Simon piped up.

At this juncture, Ryan walked up behind Crystal and patted her on the back.

"You're safe."

Lee was asked to take a walk with Ryan, who summarily sat him down on the other side of the stage, and hit him with the news point-blank.

You're coming back!

Oh, Ryan, you devil.

As it turns out, Katie Stevens was given the heave-ho.

Ironically, her send off song was "Let it be".

When she sang - "In my hour of darkness" - both she and the audience choked up.

Was there a dry eye in the house?

It wasn't meant to be, after all.

If it is any consolation, Katie, I have learned over the years that sometimes we make plans for ourselves which aren't a good fit.

In spite of that fact, folks go on blindly banging their heads against the wall, in pursuit of a goal that's  not suited for for them.

Sometimes, the Lord has better plans for us, so let go - Katie.

Let God's invisible hand guide you.

On that note, see y'all next week, when Alicia Keyes hits the stage!

Ellen DeGeneres...Family Feud contestants choke on gay issue! Simon unpopular...

OMG!

On the West Coast - especially in the show biz arena - we are all so blase about Ellen DeGeneres being "openly" gay.

Married to a pretty lipstick lesbo?

Who cares!

Not so - in mainstream America - if we're to try to fathom what went down on Family Feud this week.

Even Ellen was a trifle perplexed (miffed?).

Game show contestants were asked to take a stab at a quiz that should have been a snap!

During the segment - "Things that people know about Ellen DeGeneres" - it became quite evident that the guests (a typical middle-class American family) were having a difficult time dealing with the issue of Ellen's "gayness".

I expect the first answer that popped into the fuzzy little heads of the viewers at home was quite obviously one that pertained to the fact that Ellen is "gay!".

Nope.

First answer?

"Ellen has a talk show."

Okay, not bad, but just betcha the next response will focus on her same-sex persuasion (I thought to myself from the comfort on my Hotel suite in San Francisco).

The second answer tripped off-the-tongue of the contestant trippingly, no problem.

"She is a funny lady."

Uh-huh.

Not queer, mind you, just funny.

Golly, the next words to be uttered up would  surely have the - "H", "G", or "L" - letters in it (wouldn't you have thunk?).

"Ellen doesn't like this country," the husband hazarded a guess (with a straight face, mind you!).

Huh?

"Ellen takes care of her mother," flunked out too.

Not on the ubiquitous board above the stage!

Finally - gosh almighty - a family member piped up that Ellen's married.

Bingo!

But, the tactful woman stopped short of noting the particulars.

"To a woman, you idiot!"

Needless to say, when Ellen showed the clip on her show earlier today, she was obviously in need of some consoling.

Til now, the perky talk show host - and upbeat friendly Judge on American Idol - must have thought she was the darling of America.

Nope.

Hard to swallow, eh Ellen?

In another surprise moment (when Ellen was setting up a belated April Fool's Day joke) she announced that Simon Cowell was exiting American Idol.

The spirited guests in her audience cheered!

Or was there an applause sign being held up from the sidelines?

Nope.

Ellen was shocked.

"You want Simon Cowell to leave Idol?"

The crowd roared in approval.

Life is full of surprises, isn't it?

American Idol...Angry fan taunts Simon! Casey's whiskey-soaked voice appeals!

American Idol is starting to steal alot of thunder from the gutsy Jerry Springer show.

No wonder!

Idol - and one of its irascible Judges (Simon Cowell) - hit a new low last night!

Simon's mean-spirited assessments turned folks off so much, in fact, they were inclined to openly taunt him to show their disapproval during the broadcast.

The normally-cool Simon was so unnerved by the incident - that he was indignant - and begged (!) that he be allowed to "finish" his talent assessent.

Thank you very much!

In a nutshell, it appears that fans are tired of the English transplants cruel attacks on the contestants each week, and have no qualms about lashing back.

Security!

That aside, the performances (for the most part) were not only entertaining last evening, but more individualistic in style.

To their credit, the warblers took a shot with their own arrangements - and thankfully - refrained from being total copy-cats (Karaoke-style).

Casey James tried his hand at "Jealous Guy" with a romantic approach.

Rusty, heartfelt and - bluesy at times - the gamble paid off since the rendition suited the tune and his voice.

One Judge applauded the handsome stud for showing a vulnerable side.

Fellow songbirds joked about Casey and his golden locks (reminded me of my hippie days when I was 17 - footloose and fancy free - dancing outdoors at be-ins in Vancouver) and were inclined to bandy about names for the soap character they predict he'll be playing one day (Trevor & Drake were two favorite choices).

In particular, I was impressed with the way he closed the ballad with a heartfelt cry!

Tim Urban - the kid with the bright blue eyes and wide pretty smile - was received well by the adjudicators who have criticized him in prior weeks for holding back and taking advice lightly.

He started off slow with "All my Loving", then built slowly, until he had the rapt audience in the palm of his hand.

I thought that the performance turned a bit pedestrian at one point, and ended up a little flat, but the Judges raved.

It sure lacked the excitement and frenzy that ignited the British Invasion back in the sixties.

I was a teen when they conquered North America, so I know from whence I speak!

Tim's stage persona was bang on, though.

"You've got that McCartney cuteness going on," gushed Simon.

"The girls love 'ya. And it will sell tickets," he added in so many words.

Aaron's "Long and Winding Road" was too sweet (a polite way of saying weak) and was a bad choice in my estimation.

The kid's vocal projection was poor - which caused me to wonder - if he needed to be in a lower register.

Another singer fell into the same trap.

When the pretty songstress sang out - "Nothing's Going to Change My World" - I prayed that someone would toss out a hook, drag her offstage, and prove otherwise!

Pathetic!

Crystal Bowersox wowed judges and the audience alike with her stab at a Beatles tune - and managed to pique their curiosity too - when she facilitated the use of a didgeridoo (an instrument originating with tribes in Australia) to injest a haunting new sound into the mix.

In  contrast, another performer's use of bagpipes (Heh Jude) caused most to shake their heads.

"Looks like that dude wandered in from another sound stage," one Judge snickered.

As usual, Ryan Seacrest fluttered about the stage, trying to look important (relevant, as the Judges would say).

I laughed out loud last night when Dave Letterman quizzed one of the singers (who just got kicked off the show) about Seacrest's role on American Idol.

"What does that fellow Ryan Seacrest actually do," he quizzed the suprised guest.

The tactful young lady tried to skirt around the issue, but eventually coughed up a response.

"Ryan helps put the performers at ease," she asserted in so many words.

"Oh, he's one of those good looking non-threatening guys, eh?" Dave dead-panned to the camera.

Uh-huh.

Quite unlike that Brit who gets two thumbs down this week!

Tune in tonight for a performance by Rihanna.

American Idol...Miley Cyrus triumphs! Simon hissed! Dark moody vibes reared ugly head!

Miley Cyrus inspired a standing ovation, disgruntled members of the audience hissed a bit**y Brit, and Ryan Seacrest got down to the nitty-gritty to the chagrin of many.

Uh-huh!

"American Idol" kicked off a new season filled with promise, until things started to go bump in the night, and sent nervous contestants (and Judges) down a topsy-turvy path that left a few biting their nails and pondering their futures.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/03/american-idolmiley-cyrus-steals-show.html

In contrast, American Idol appeared to be struggling to pull itself up by the bootstraps last night, in the aftermath of the fiasco that went down Tuesday evening.

In a heart-to-heart with the contestants, stacked side-by-side like ducks in a row on hard benches, Ryan Seacrest attempted to make sense of the scoreboard (with a little input from the performers) to determine the status of each hapless competitor.

Talk about tough love!

At one point, when Seacrest repeated  a criticism uttered up by a snide Simon the night before, a handful of guests in the audience hissed enthusiastically.

Ouch!

Was it just me - or did the Judges appear to be on the "hot seat" - last night?

On occasion, Ellen - for instance - appeared to be put out by the line of questioning.

"Well, I wasn't happy with the song he chose," she retorted in response to a query about Casey's turn at the mic on Tuesday night.

"But, I liked his voice," she snipped a bit indignantly.

At one point, when Cowell was asked if he wanted to change an assessment he made, he paused for a second red-faced before reacting.

"No, I don't," he finally coughed up in so many words as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

In view of the pall that was hanging over the room, it was crystal clear to me, that there must have been some grumbling from above by the powers-that-be on high in the executive suite over controversies that reared their ugly during the American Idol premiere show.

Obviously, the boom had been lowered.

In contrast, when charismatic Miley Cyrus alighted on the stage to perform her new single - "The Last Song" - the mood was all hearts and flowers.

In fact, when the pretty songbird wrapped up her performance on a powerful high note, the electric moment garnered her a standing ovation.

Cyrus was taken aback.

"I've never had a standing ovation before," she gushed.

I wasn't surprised.

The song was perfectly suited to her voice and perfomed to perfection with heartfelt emotion.

American Idol contestants would be wise to follow her example!

Nuff said!

Ryan handled details well last night!

That bad, eh?

Paula Abdul...the X-Factor! Turns down 1 cool million...

How about a Latino Drag Show?

The scuttlebutt streaking like lightning around the newswires today is that Paula Abdul has dug in her heels and lamented pouty-lipped:

No way, Jose!

Abdul announced that she will not be showing up for judging duties on - So You Think You can Dance? - when the popular Fox entertainment show strikes up the band next season (in spite of a carrot or two dangled up front from Fox Execs strings-free).

Fox has allegedly offered Paula a cool million in cash to have first dibs on her boob tube persona to stave off the alleged (?) competition waiting in the wings (but even that tempting offer has been turned down by the dizzy hostess with the mostest with nary a fleeting doubter).

Insiders whisper that Paula has her keen eye on teaming up with Simon Cowell when he revs up with his spanking new show X-Factor at Fox next year.

Something tells me, though, that Paula does not have enough "X" quotient to factor in!

American Idol...disc jockeys titter over an Ellen DeGeneres poke from Patti LaBelle! Ratings soar...

Bit** fight titillates Fox viewers!

This morning disc jockeys were all over the Ellen DeGeneres controversy like flies on sh** on the heels of this remark bypop icon  Patti LaBelle:

"Someone shouldn't be on American Idol."

"Wonder who that could be?" they chortled in jest on one popular morning show.

"Well, three of the judges have been on Idol for years and nothing was said before. So, you figure it out," quipped one perky female jock.

All music pointers appeared to be jabbing at the podium in the direction of Ellen.

"The problem is she's a type "A" personality," one seasoned broadaster wailed.

"Simon too," a  gossip reporter retorted in an astute uptake.

Double-trouble, alright.

"She used to sit next to Simon - but when she complained that he was fondling her leg - they moved her," he snidely uttered in an aside.

Yeah, some men find the idea of bedding a lesbian a kinky erotic sexual turn-on, for sure.

"So, now you've got these two bookends on either side anchoring down the panel," they conceded unhappily.

The scuttlebutt actually bordered on nasty.

"Oh, there's a definite chill in the air on Idol now" they accused.

The general consensus was that Ellen - in the final anaylsis - managed to destroy the chemistry of the show.

Simon and Paula used to be the mom & dad on American Idol. Then, they brought in the uptight (bitchy) new wife, they argued somewhat convincingly.

Sloppy seconds?

They wondered aloud about the politicking, too.

"Simon used to have the last word. Ellen gets it now, did you notice?"

Must be a humilating castrating experience, eh?

In sum, the disc jockeys giggled with a tinge of incredulity in their voices that the high-profile Karaoke-style ratings-getter had become the Ellen DeGeneres American Idol show.

Come on, dudes (and dudette).

Maybe it was just that time of the month last night.

Hmmm!

What would acccount for her dismal performance last week?

A bad run of the unfunnies, I guess.

Elsewhere, backstage staffers at American Idol have been tittering that Ellen and Simon can't stand each other.

"He does things just to annoy her," one whispered in confidence.

Guess everyone loves a good  bit** fight, though.

Ratings on Ellen soared last week and  Wednesday  night American Idol beat out the Olympics to land in the No. 1 spot.

Will producers take advantage of the Ellen-Cowell power-struggle?

American Idol...Ellen criticized by morning Disc Jockeys! Lighten upl...

As I was flipping the dial on the car radio this morning, I stumbled across a couple of jocks panning Ellen DeGeneres in respect to her new stint as a judge on American Idol.

The main thrust of their potshots?

"She's a comedian. That's what we expect to get from her," one chided in so many words.

"Ellen's taking it all too seriously," another piped in.

In the final analysis, the morning plattter-spinners concluded that because there already were a couple of  qualified judges (from a musical standpoint) on the panel, that the perky talk-show host (who pines to do a two-step now and then on her own show) should stick to what she does best.

But, the truth of the matter is, it is not always possible to zip off zingers non-stop that touch the funny bone.

Or, conjure of a bit of schtick that's going to hit the mark on each and every breathless occasion.

For example, last week the wide-eyed comedian attempted to rustle up a gaggle of giggles, by toying with one of the contestants in the throes of uttering up her decision.

"I know I shouldn't make you wait for my decision," she confessed with a straight face.

Silence.

"So, I'm just going to get to it."

Silence.

"Because, that would be unfair, of course. To make your wait."

Although that wasn't it verbatim, you get the gist.

The bit was so old, it was grey.

And, in spite of the fact Ellen usually has expert comic timing - on this occasion - it fell flat.

When Ellen first agreed to take on the post, the press roundly reported her stance on what it meant for her to be a judge on American Idol.

If  I recall correctly, Ms. DeGeneres admitted she was not an expert on the subject of music - and that her opinions on talent and stage presence - would stem from the fact she was a typical person who was a music lover pulling for the contestants from the sidelines.

Auditions are tough, after all.

I expect that having a major player on the panel - who is less foreboding a prospect than Simon Cowell (who tends to glare down his snotty nose at contestants) - is helpful in getting an audition off on the right note!

In that regard, Ellen's a worthwhile contribution to the mix.

Maybe she just needs to strike a better balance with her material.

It's all a matter of gaining her stride, I guess.

Give the kid a break, eh, Dudes?
