David Lynch...audiences laugh @ washed-up director! AFI Fest promo a disaster!

OMG!

How embarrassing.

Last night when a promo for the AFI FEST popped up on the screen at a West Coast film premiere at Mann's Chinese - audiences erupted into gales of laughter (in all the wrong places) - when the guest Artistic Director (David Lynch) put in an appearance on behalf of the annual festival that rolls around this time each year in Los Angeles.

The blurb - in which Lynch rambled on in a colorless mundane fashion about the alleged benefits of attending the AFI Fest - was so God-awful that it boggled the senses.

No wonder the LA TIMES panel discussion at the historic Egyptian Theatre - with Carrie Mulligan (Wall Street), Andrew Garfield (FaceBook), and Jesse Eisenberg (Facebook) - was such a technical (and critical) failure.

A post on the high profile event follows.

Judging by his washed-up demeanour on screen last night - Lynch came off looking like a down 'n out drunk on his last legs in the tenderloin district - clearly the brass at AFI made a serious blunder when they elected to have the once-celebrated auteur take over the reins.

It's no surprise why AFI has to give away tickets each year, eh?

Later!

Tom Cruise..."Knight & Day" sparks debate! Lead horse to water, at least...

Motorcycle publicity still better poster choice?

Shortly after I posted my review of "Knight and Day" - the Tom Cruise spy thriller - the hits went through the stratosphere at the Tattler.

In my caption, I shouted - "Tom Cruise...He's back!" - which must have triggered an emotion or two judging by the response.

Industry honchos, media pundits (and fans) appeared to have written the action-adventure off as a "bomb" based on a slow start at the box-office and negative buzz on the Internet.

In fact, I penned an article on the issue wherein I wondered aloud if "Tom" was still suffering from lingering image problems due to a bizarre couch-jumping incident, his involvement with the flakey Ron L. Hubbard's Scientology "outfit", and a controversial stint on Matt Lauer's hot seat in which he came off as a total pig-headed a**.

So, what gives?

Essentially, the Knight and Day fiasco all boils down to marketing (misguided) and the way "Knight and Day" was promoted.

In the morning LA Times, Patrick Goldstein pointed out that the poster - which featured a stunning graphic of the two stars - was part 'n parcel of the problem.

He argued that the failure of the studio brass to feature the identifiable faces of the two stars - Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz - may have been a fatal lack of judgment in the total scheme of things which negatively impacted the project (and perceptions of it).

In response, Tony Sella (co-President of marketing at Fox) scoffed at Goldsmith's wild idea that the studio was hiding the faces of the two stars because their appeal was lacking in a demographic they were striving to lure into theatres come opening day.

"I was doing an homage to fabled title designer Saul Bass," Sella fessed up.

"It was a way for us to signal that this was a different kind of adult movie. The whole campaign was designed to evoke a film like "North by Northwest (a Hitchcock classic)."

Because I attended film school, and have a background in the film industry in a myriad of capacities, I understood that.

If anything, the concept intrigued me - hence - my decision to screen it in spite of a bevy of biting press clips (and stinky rumors denouncing it).

I agree with Sella that the commercial spots - in which Cruise appeared to be a wacko dude kidnapping a woman - may have fallen short  in getting the film's essential storyine across.

If the studio noted - in a nutshell - that this was a spy thriller (and that Cruise character's was on a ultra-secret mission) Cruise fans and spy-thriller enthusiasts would have flocked to the theatres from the get-go when theatre doors swung open.

It appears, in retrospect, that filmgoers took a - "let's wait and see" - attitude.

Movie dollars only stretch so far these days, after all.

Call me sophisticated, if you will, but the quirky "promo" didn't phase me.

Frankly, I tire of "trailers" that reveal so much of the plot, that you end up saying to yourself:

"Why bother going to see the film now?

The studio's big sin was they didn't give enough "tease" - and as a result - left filmgoers and fans in the proverbial dark.

Fox brass  didn't even lead the horse to water!

How do you expect them to drink?

Justin Bieber...free tickets @ Housing Development! Back rub, anyone?

The other morning, one of my favorite anchors on a Vegas news oulet reported that a local housing development was piping Justin Bieber's hit tune - "Baby Baby Baby" - into a handful of their upscale homes for a special promotion.

Prospective buyers who take a walk-thru have the golden opportunity - to not only take a gander at the spanking-new community - but win a couple of tickets to Justin Bieber's upcoming live! concert.

Lookie-loo's are welcome, too!

If they toss in a back rub from Justin, I'm on the way.

See 'ya there!

Las Vegas bound...not! Fitzgerald Hotel Casino security guards harass guests...

On the heels of a program the Tourism bureau launched to rustle up travel to "Las Vegas", security guards at Fitzgerald's Hotel Casino have managed to sabotage the promotion by engaging in reprehensible conduct that is scaring travellers away!

Sources have reported that unsavory-looking security guards have been following slot-players around the gambling floor at whim - and on occasion have not only demanded I.D. - but unlawfully detained the unsuspecting victims in the process.

And, more often than not, the victims have been treated in a rude and insulting manner by these "pigs".

When complaints were made to Hotel Management, employees at Fitzgerald's Casino showed little remorse for the reprehensible conduct, which has angered a number of regular visitors to the city.

One irate gambler noted that when he was stopped - singled out, if you like - the shake-down gave onlookers the impression that he was some kind of criminal, or at a minimum, that he had engaged in some-kind-of wrongful conduct which resulted in unwarranted harassment at the hands of the bonehead guards.

Obviously, these losers are rejects from the police academy with psychological problems, who swear by a badge and a gun to assert their manhood.

Dudes, a gun is no substitute for a long stiff di**.

Get therapy, quick!

When calls were put into Hotel management to register complaints, staff at Fitzgerald's tried to toss the blame on the security company.

But, the truth of the matter is, the Casino is responsible because they hired the wild cavalier rent-a-cops without proper screening.

And now, there will be hell to pay.

Notwithstanding, because Fitzgerald's Casino is private property - staff are under the mistaken impression that a guest's rights are left at the door along with the U.S. Constitution and the law of the land - the Bill of rights.

In fact, when I put in a call to a Manager - "Stacy" - she shrugged off the complaint issues.

She harped it was a silly complaint - in spite of the fact the guest(s) in question were not only stopped and harassed - but demeaned and thoroughly humiliated in front of bystanders witness to the shocking events.

Obviously, the woman is not only ignorant about rights issues, but suffers from a low IQ.

I find it ironic that at a time when City officials are wringing their hands over a dramatic loss of business in sin city in recent months - that employees at Fitzgerald's are hastening the exodus from the desert by touting heinous conduct that is not only wrongful - but flies in the face of the right of an individual to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

Vegas bound?

Not until the Fitzgerald - and other Hotels who engage in similar reprehensible conduct - change a barbaric policy that can no longer be tolerated in a civilized community.
