Las Vegas...curfew for teens without parents in tow! Nevada a Police State?

The tell-tale sight of idle teens gone blotto on the Vegas strip after-hours may become an unruly phenomenon of the past now that Officials have given Law Enforcement the nod to enforce a curfew to take effect immediately in "Sin" City.

During the weekdays, teens - 18 and under - will only be permitted to cruise the boulevard after 10 p.m. if there is a consenting adult (family member and/or friend) or parent in tow!

On Friday and Saturday nights the curfew has been set at 9 p.m.

Which begs two questions.

Will you know where your kids are after-hours during the week in the glitzy environs of the desert oasis when they get-down and party-hearty?

For starters, if they are on the Las Vegas strip alone after curfew, they may end up at the local lock-up downtown.

And, the shocked rebels may find themselves charged with a misdemeanor

Meanwhile, Civil Rights Activists are shaking their heads in disbelief and wondering aloud.

Is Nevada on the way to becoming a Police State?

Las Vegas...pawn shops thriving! Rolexes & wedding rings hawked for pennies...

Folks must have had a poor run of luck last night in the Casinos given the long line I spied in front of the pawn shop this morning on Las Vegas Boulevard at approximately 11 a.m.

Or, maybe there was a sale on family heirlooms and sparkly diamond-encrusted wedding rings?

Well, I expect everything is expendable in Sin City, where marriage licenses don't end up being worth more than the fee (or low grade paper they are  printed on) to trot before a justice of the peace at the witching hour in a run-down chapel in the heart of the strip.

The rolex watches lining the glass showcases are a dime-a-dozen, too.

But, a laptop for a hundred bucks is a great bonanza if you're in the market for one.

Just pray 'ya  don't run into the down-on-his-luck dude (who hawked it for a song) when you're checking e-mail  at the Wifi station in Starbucks or McDonalds.

Heck, you can  rustle up a loan on your auto in a snap, if the paperwork checks out with the DMV.

The danger in that?

If the croupier skims 'ya dry - or the slots turn on you - it's a long walk (or bus-ride) home.

Hopefully, you booked a room with meal coupons included, that way at least you'll eat.

In closing, I have a piece of advice worth listening to.

Set a spending limit before you cruise into town - and once you've exhausted it - have the courage to walk-away.

Bottom line: only gamble what you can afford to lose.

They don't call 'em loan sharks for no good reason, after all.

With a game plan like that, at least you'll sleep nights.

Amen!

Barack Obama...wax dummy! Las Vegas unveils Prez look-a-like...

The powers-that-be in Las Vegas appear to have taken a sly dig at the President on the heels of his last outspoken comments about the desert's Sin city which caused an uproar for the second time in the past year.

If you recall, I penned  a post on the controversy a short while ago, which arose when Obama urged Americans to save their funds for College tuition rather than spend it like a drunken sailor in the Nevada oasis.

Post:  02/04/10

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/02/barack-obamavegas-slams-prez-sin-city.html

Understandably, the remarks sparked a furor.

After all, Las Vegas - in particular - has been hurting from high unemployment and a downturn in tourism due to a struggling economy.

In view of the foregoing,  one has to wonder about the timeliness of the installation of the wax dummy of Barack Obama, at Madame Tussaud's Museum on the strip.

A hint that the President deserves a place of honor in the "dummy" ranks?

Obama is expected to visit the resort area - to make amends? - in the near future.

Will he have the gumption to inspect his - um - likwise?

Barack Obama...Vegas slams Prez! Sin City deserved dressing-down...

Sin City cries the blues!

Dirty old Mayor incensed by Obama remarks!

Once again, Barack Obama opened his yap and ended up with a shovel or two of desert sand being shoved down his throaat.

Yup!

Those lounge lizards and politicos in the Nevada oasis are hopping mad again!

Recently, Barack Obama was inclined to make a comment about Vegas, which he thought was practical advice.

In a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Obama noted in passing, that Americans shouldn't blow their money in Vegas - but instead - save it for College.

The comment sparked rage for a second time in the fleshpot of the Nation - where the vices of weak individuals - are inclined to get the best of them.

The end result?

Cash down the drain on slots, too much booze, and pleasures of the sinful kind that break of up marriages and sully the images and reputations of high-profile figures (Tiger Woods ring any bells?)

Ah, the follies invvoled in the  pursuit of pure unadulterated sex!

It was the second time since taking office that Obama singled out Las Vegas as a potential cesspool of irresponsible excessive spending.

If you recall, Obama criticized bank employees for jetting off to Vegas and splurging at a time when most Americans were hurting financially.

At that time, the  City Fathers lamented that the unfair barb would negatively impact the Las Vegas  further.

Over the past couple of years, Vegas has been struggling to regain its former glory as a destination hot-spot.

The city's residents have been hard-hit from a two-year onslaught of of foreclosures, bankruptcies and unemployment.

Tourism is the Silver State's most valuable commodity, and in view of this, there has been an outcry from  ranks of high order in the wake of the disclosure that Barack has named Vegas as a potential culprit once again.

The President was quick to jump into the fray in a concerted effort to smooth over the troubled waters.

"I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun," Obama said, according to the letter released by Reid's office.

"You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage," Obama said.

"You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices."

"There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country's great destinations," he noted in the aftermath.

For the record, Mr. Obama also underscored that he has always enjoyed his visits to gambling gulch.

However, vacations there may not be so satisfying in the future, if  Mayor Goodman has any say in it.

Goodman - not only lambasted Obama during a hastily called news conference - but assured all within earshot that the President was  no friend to Las Vegas and would not be welcomed there  if he visits.

"I'll do everything I can to give him the boot," Goodman said.

"This President is a real slow learner."

Barrack's comments quickly sparked a negative gut reaction elswhere in the Silver State which supported Obama in the 2008 election.

Goodman and others are worried that Obama's words will discourage visitors from jetting off  to Las Vegas -  and that as a result -  the industry will be depressed further.

"Enough is enough!" Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley said in a one accusing statement.

"President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars."

Senator John Ensign (Repuplican) pointed out from the sidelines that the President may not have grasped the weight that his words carry around the country (and beyond).

"The President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money," Reid pointedly added.

"I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas."

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons, Rep. Dean Heller (Republican), and Democratic Rep. Dina Titus also roundly criticized the President.

"He has to step up right away and say, you know, he wasn't thinking," Goodman huffed.

"Sometimes when he's not using his monitors and reading what he says, he doesn't think. And this is one of those times he didn't think, and he should straighten out the record because he's been here, he knows Las Vegas is a great place."

In my opinion, Las Vegas deserves a dressing-down.

Whenever the President or any politician takes a poke at Sin City they go up in arms.

However, as I have reported in past posts - Las Vegas casinos, City coppers, and others - have continually  given tourists and vistiors in general the shaft.

Instead  of taking  note of the valid criticisms - and taking action to cure the problems  - Las Vegas continues to ignore issues that are hurting its public image and turning visitors away.

For instance, in one post, I noted that I witnessed racial profiling in the streets.

Has the despicable practice stopped?

No.

Post:  05/12/09

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/05/las-vegasracial-profiling-continues-on.html

I also reported that a handful of Hotels - such as the Sahara - were not disclosing fees to tourists when they booked rooms (a disreputable practice that is downright fraudulent in nature).

Has that issued been addressed by the Mayor or Casino owners?

No.

Post:  09/15/09

http://julian1st.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/las-vegas-sahara-hotel-fails-to-disclose-fees-bad-buffet-beef-security-detail-taunts-guests/

In spite of the fact Las Vegas has been crying the blues over loss of revenue,  they continue to engage in violations of citizens rights (which summarily turn tourists off).

For example, at Harrah's and Fitzgerald's Hotels, security guards often shake-down guests on the casino floor - detain them, ask inappropriate questions, and violate their civil rights - without legal authority to do so

It's harassment plain and simple!.

Who wants to patronize an establishment that runs rough-shod over the rights of the individual?

Has the problem been addressed?

No.

Also, Las Vegas would have you believe they welcome tourists with open arms, but have a curious way of showing their appreciation for the business.

On many occasion, for example, I have witnessed traffic cops pull over pedestrians (who are often from foreign countries and unfamiliar with the terrain and/or laws in the U.S.) and proceed to ticket them for jay-walking.

If Vegas is going to continue the practices aforementioned, they deserve to be shat upon.

So, President Obama, take note.

There are several glaring consumer issues in Vegas that cry out for investigation.

Just pick one for your next speech, eh?

Las Vegas..Mayor says guests may do what they want! Spell Sin City's name right...

aka Sin City

Mayor Goodman dips his stick in Vegas spoils, too!

In the wake of the Tiger Woods fiasco, some residents of Las Vegas has been wondering how the scandal will impact the desert resort, especially since the celebrated golf pro hooked up with a couple of beauties in Sin City.

In response, city officials fired back  in a self-serving effort to calm the scandal-ridden waters.

For starters, Mayor Goodman noted that the show town has been known as the "sin" capital for decades  for obvious reasons.

Although the old-timer acknowleged that salacious conduct was prevalent in the city with no clocks, he argued that the naughty goings-on were part 'n parcel in  a town that has been synonymous with scintillating sexy adult entertainment.

"We don't care what you do in Vegas. Just spell the city's name right," he chided  in so many words.

A couple of his statements were in conflict with each other, though.

Although the look-the-other-way top honcho doesn't care what goes down in the city that never sleeps,, curiously, he also made a point of stressing that what happens in Vegas "doesn't stay in Vegas".

That may be a bit unnerving for some!

Worshippers of the Hedonistic lifestyle - and wine, women, and song (who take advantage of the smorgasbord of sensual delights available in town and around town) - would rather their dirty weekends in Vegas be kept under wraps.

One has only to look to the convention brouhaha  that erupted a scant few months ago to recognize it is an obvious truism.

Once word got "out" that the giants of industry in America were touching down in Sin City, and facilitating corporate funds to fuel the party circuit, the sh** hit the fan if you recall. .

On the heels of sensational headlines at major dailies around the country - which screamed out the tawdry truth about Corporate America and Sin City - boardroom execs were inclined to slam on the brakes pronto!

At this juncture, the travel industry plummeted, resort rooms sat empty, and a gut-wrenching pall fell over a once-cocky town that had much to crow about

In the final analysis, and in the best fiscal interest of the city, the Mayor may want to shift his viewpoint a tad (all Tiger Woods lacey things considered).

Otherwise the fickle jet-set and savvy trend-setting  travellers may seek out loftier climbs to party-hearty.

A quote springs to mind:

"Discretion is the better part of valor."

Amen!

Tiger should have kept his eye on the ball!

CSI...on hands "crime" experience in Las Vegas! MGM Grand...

Fans of CSI may dive in for the experience of a "crime fighter's" lifetime currently on exhibit at the MGM Grand in Sin City.

On the eve of the unveiling, a handful of the popular drama's cast members trotted down the red carpet in Vegas amidst a lot of hoopla and fanfare!

The intriguing display affords guests the opportunity to play-act the role of a crime-scene investigator.

On the scintillating set there are two state-of-the-art crime labs to enhance the adventure for thrill-seekers and wannabee-actors alike.

Because there are quite a few parents taking-in the "hit"  in-the-round theatrical experience, obviously, there are many kids in tow.

For this reason, the terrain is a little tamer than a crime scene in the mean streets of  Los Angeles - let's say - than it normally would be.

See 'ya there!

Las Vegas..."Firefly" at Plaza serves up scrumptious steak & mushroom skewers!! View of Freemont Steet dazzling...

I zipped down to Sin City for a respite from the LA LA LAND for a few days.

The desert oasis is sizzling hot right now!

Shortly after I checked into my Hotel, I spied an in-house promo for Firefly - a domed restaurant at the Plaza - which provides a spectacular panoramic view of the dazzling night lights on Freemont Street (at the downtown Vegas strip).

I wasn't expecting much when I set my sights on a skewer of steak and mushrooms, but shortly after I slipped a tasty morsel into my mouth, I was sold on the scrumptious finger food offered up in a delicious garlic sauce.

The ale hit the spot, too, as I settled back in my comfy chair and enjoyed the effervescent night life all around me.

For tourists interested in dinner and a show, the Rat Pack is a sure bet and packing 'em in nightly at the Plaza Hotel  upstairs.

See 'ya there!

Las Vegas...cheap rooms! Summer of 1969 celebrations! Tropical heat wave...

As I breezed through the last stretch of the Mojave Desert and spied Las Vegas - a dazzling gem sparkling in the mid-day sun ahead - I was suddenly hit smack dab in the face with a tropical heat wave.

Whew!

I should have packed a cooler of Marguerite's!

No matter.

Soon, I would be firmly ensconced in my cheapie hotel room ($10 bucks a night!) and ready to take the big splash 'round town.

Sin-city lovers are trickling into town to catch the "Summer of 1969" celebrations underway at the downtown Freemont Street experience.

And, there's a bowling convention!

I expect Big Lebowski fans will be chomping at the bit to score a lucky strike on the lanes in the event they strike out at the slots!

I roared up to the Hotel a bit shy of check-in - at which point - the desk clerk informed me that my room was not ready.

So, I sauntered off to take in a few of the eye-catching sights.

As it turned out, Lady Luck was smiling on me right from the get-go.

When I called the newly-renovated Hotel about an hour later - the clerk noted that although a single room I requested was not made up yet - I was welcome to an upgrade (free of charge).

Would I mind a double-room with two Queen-size beds?

Heck, no!

The wheels started turning inside my mischievous little head.

I'd invite a couple of my friends over for a pajama party!

A few cocktails - and a pillow fight or two later - we'd head out on the town!

Of course, I'd have to dash into Mermaids for a deep-fried oreo or two.

And, line up for the scrumptious buffet offered up each evening at the Sahara, just a hop-and-skip away.

Maybe I'll take in - "The Lion King" - a big hit here right now in the desert playground.

I'll keep you posted, fer sure!

Twitter...Las Vegas following me! Golly...

Last night I got quite a surprise when I clicked on a Twitter update.

Vegas is following me.

Golly, I hit the jackpot.

After all, I don't recall ever having a city's fans follow me before.

Maybe the Mayor will present me with a key to "Sin City" on the heels of this enviable honor?

And, why not, I'm a likely candidate!

A flurry of upbeat posts I penned on the desert oasis this past week must have cheered up die-hard fans considerably.

Until I sauntered into town at High Noon, Vegas stalwarts were crying the blues about slumping Hotel reservations - and a staggering loss of revenue due to the failed economy - that had turned Bugsy's little gem upside down.

Rat-a-tat-tat!

I must have hit the target with mouth-watering posts about 99 cent Daiquiris, scrumptious deep-fried oreos, and the bevy of bodacious babes that serve 'em up with a come-hither look @ Mermaids at the Fremont Street experience nightly.

Obviously, night owls were also delighted with a video clip that featured the eye-popping marquee @ Glitter Gulch, a prestigious Gentleman's club.

Indeed!

Entertaining footage featuring a sensational saxophone player (local musician Carl Ferris), a charismatic country-rock performer by the name of Scotty Alexander, and an Alice Cooper tribute band obviously scored big on the richter scale, as well.

The dazzling light shows captured on HD Video were pretty much a sensory knock-out, too.

While the last-minute jaunt to Vegas wasn't too expensive (I rustled up a spacious suite at rock-bottom prices at Expedia last-minute) the impromptu trek turned out to be quite fortuitous.

After documenting four sun-drenched fun-filled days & exotic starry nights in the destination hot spot, I am the toast of the town.

In contrast, Harvey Feirstein was nearly tarred & feathered and banned from the glitzy Vegas strip, for criticizing the powers-that-be for trimming the length of Broadway Shows that hit town.

Nothing personal, Harvey.

In a nutshell, it all boils down to dollars and common sense.

Russian Roulette, anyone?

Las Vegas bound...not! Fitzgerald Hotel Casino security guards harass guests...

On the heels of a program the Tourism bureau launched to rustle up travel to "Las Vegas", security guards at Fitzgerald's Hotel Casino have managed to sabotage the promotion by engaging in reprehensible conduct that is scaring travellers away!

Sources have reported that unsavory-looking security guards have been following slot-players around the gambling floor at whim - and on occasion have not only demanded I.D. - but unlawfully detained the unsuspecting victims in the process.

And, more often than not, the victims have been treated in a rude and insulting manner by these "pigs".

When complaints were made to Hotel Management, employees at Fitzgerald's Casino showed little remorse for the reprehensible conduct, which has angered a number of regular visitors to the city.

One irate gambler noted that when he was stopped - singled out, if you like - the shake-down gave onlookers the impression that he was some kind of criminal, or at a minimum, that he had engaged in some-kind-of wrongful conduct which resulted in unwarranted harassment at the hands of the bonehead guards.

Obviously, these losers are rejects from the police academy with psychological problems, who swear by a badge and a gun to assert their manhood.

Dudes, a gun is no substitute for a long stiff di**.

Get therapy, quick!

When calls were put into Hotel management to register complaints, staff at Fitzgerald's tried to toss the blame on the security company.

But, the truth of the matter is, the Casino is responsible because they hired the wild cavalier rent-a-cops without proper screening.

And now, there will be hell to pay.

Notwithstanding, because Fitzgerald's Casino is private property - staff are under the mistaken impression that a guest's rights are left at the door along with the U.S. Constitution and the law of the land - the Bill of rights.

In fact, when I put in a call to a Manager - "Stacy" - she shrugged off the complaint issues.

She harped it was a silly complaint - in spite of the fact the guest(s) in question were not only stopped and harassed - but demeaned and thoroughly humiliated in front of bystanders witness to the shocking events.

Obviously, the woman is not only ignorant about rights issues, but suffers from a low IQ.

I find it ironic that at a time when City officials are wringing their hands over a dramatic loss of business in sin city in recent months - that employees at Fitzgerald's are hastening the exodus from the desert by touting heinous conduct that is not only wrongful - but flies in the face of the right of an individual to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

Vegas bound?

Not until the Fitzgerald - and other Hotels who engage in similar reprehensible conduct - change a barbaric policy that can no longer be tolerated in a civilized community.

Las Vegas...Wynn's splashy Encore bash a glittering event!

At the stroke of eight, Steve Wynn gave a nod - at which point- a throng of lookie-loos (who had been patiently waiting for about an hour in a line that snaked down the busy Las Vegas strip) surged forward in a crush and swarmed the swankiest new Casino in Sin City, Encore!

Staff beamed and Hotel Management glad-handed guests as smartly-attired Security Staff stood at attention with a keen eye to ensuring there were no mishaps at the gala opening night.

Within minutes, the slots were swamped with anxious players, plugging in bills in a mad frenzy.

There were a lot of oohs and aahs, too.

Encore is a touchy-feeling entry into the Vegas scene.

Blood red chandeliers strategically-placed about the Casino added a festive spirit to the lobby.

A butterfly motif (a Hotel Theme) echoed throughout - from the pristine marble floors - to the exquisite wall reliefs that adorned the foyers, lounges, and gambling rooms about the expansive elegantly-decorated environs.

At the pool lounge guests may loll in the mid-day sun or sip exotic cocktails under a romantic starry night sky.

In spite of the rich decor and obvious appeal to the Uppercrust, there is also a sports bar on the main floor for die-hard fans to catch a pro game and sip a beer.

When I was ushered into a watering hole on the first floor, I immediately caught sight of a striking golden figure of a woman crafted from the trunk of a tree with a crown of branches that were literally awesome to gaze upon.

Young pretty waitresses were squeezed into form-fitting chic party dresses with a smattering of sparkly beads at the bodice.

The eye-catching "uniforms" were short-short, and displayed a lot of generous leg, fellas!

A passion fruit cocktail (non-alcoholic) was a bit pricey at $7.00 - and packed a tad too much with ice - but delicious none-the-less.

The Casino floor was sparked by exquisite one-of-a-kind artifacts such as crystal dragons and a smiling Buddha or two.

When I slipped into the men's room for a whiz, I laughed when I spied artwork hanging gracefully in the toilet stalls!

Sprinkled about the Casino there were a handful of gold-plated telephones resting on marble podiums, for those who need to clear their credit with Hotel Management, I guess.

The swivel chairs at the slot machines - in coral/peach tones and edged in black lacquer with crimson red trim - are an enormous improvement over those cumbersome old dinosaurs that guests were forced to maneuver in-and-out of ad nauseam.

At "Switch" - designers conjured up a lounge that is transformed every twenty minutes or so into a dazzling new eye-catching environ - by virtue of walls that rise and fall magically seemingly at whim.

When I queried staff about the 231 carat diamond - supposedly the crown jewel of Wynn's new property - most were puzzled by my probe and unable to offer up any info on the precious gem.

"Must be for the VIPS only," one staff member quipped.

On that thought, it should be noted that one passer-by in the street wailed that Encore was just another place for rich folks to go.

"I couldn't afford to stay there."

Last night's glittering opening signalled one truism.

You can lead a horse to water, but will he drink?

If the packed house last night was any indication - the answer is a platinum-lined "yes" - at least for the capricious moment.

A day after the exciting high-energy bash, when I trotted inside for a second glance, guests were having difficulty flagging down waitresses for cocktails and when slots went awry it was tough-going getting staff to deal with the problem.

Yes, the workers were less attentive today and there wasn't much magic in the air.

Mr. Wynn, tossing an extravagant party will surely nab a lot of attention and entice the elite jet set into your Casino on the splashy gala opening night.

But, without follow thru on top-notch goods and services, do you think you'll honestly be able to sustain the magic?

I doubt it!

CineVegas Film Festival...Anjelica Huston & 5 actors honored!

The Cinevega film festival honored six actors who made significant contributions to film and the industry on the occasion of the Festival's 10th anniversary.

"Over the past 10 years, CineVegas has honored an impressive body of actors, directors and producers and this year is no exception," the Festival directed noted with a lot of enthusiasm.

What better way to celebrate a decade of recognizing talent than to honor - James Caan, Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, Anjelica Huston, Viggo Mortensen and Sam Rockwell - whose brazen careers mirrored the excellence of the myriad innovative and uninhibited films the Fest unveils each year?

James Caan was honored with the Festival’s Vegas Icon Award (sponsored by the LVCVA) which is presented to an actor - who not only embodied the spirit of Las Vegas - but also delivered up memorable performances in films and shows set in the desert city.

The honorees participated in moderated conversations at the Festival which were open to the general public a few days later.

The Marquee Award was given to Anjelica Huston for her illustrious accomplishments in the film industry.

In addition - Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, Viggo Mortsensen and Sam Rockwell - were rewarded with Half-Life Awards for their exemplary achievements on celluloid to date.

Anjelica Huston has received a couple of dozen honors in a long impressive theatrical career which include multiple nods from the National Society of Film Critics, two Independent Spirit Awards, Los Angeles and New York Film Critics Awards, and an honor from Women in Film.

Also, Huston received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Prizzi's Honor", and a Golden Globe for her role in HBO's original movie "Iron Jawed Angels".

Although she's the daughter of respected actor/director John Huston - and a high-profile celebrity in her own right - many filmgoers first came to be familiar with her work through her long-time romantic association with film great, Jack Nicholson.

Since being named Best Supporting Actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics for his breakout performance opposite Denzel Washington in - "Devil in a Blue Dress" - actor Don Cheadle has consistently turned in powerful performances on both stage and screen.

Other stand-out roles include those scripted in "Talk to Me"; the Oscar-winning, "Crash" (Cheadle produced); The Hotel Rwanda (Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Broadcast Film Critics Award); "Reign Over Me"; and award-winning "Traffic".

Cheadle is also well recognized for his television work.

In recent years, he has become known to the American public for his humanitarian efforts in war-torn countries overseas, which have occasionally been captured on film in the form of powerful documentaries (Darfur Now).

Rosario Dawson (KIDS) emerged recently as one of Hollywood’s most sought after leading ladies.
The talented actress was featured in Tarantino’s horror project - "Grindhouse" - as well as "Descent" (which served as her producing debut).

Other memorable roles include that of "Mimi Valdez" in the 2005 film adaptation of "Rent".

Fans may recall she played "Gail" in the 2005 film noir drama "Sin City".

Dawson also starred in "Explicit Ills" - which premiered and won the audience award at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival - and was later unveiled at the 2008 CineVegas Film Festival.

Although Viggo Mortensen is mainly known as an actor to the American filmgoing public, the talented man is also a highly accomplished actor, poet, photographer and painter.

In essence, he's what you would call a Renaissance Man.

His film career has been marked by a steady stream of diverse performances since his debut as a young Amish farmer in "Witness".

Critics stood up and took notice of his work in "A History of Violence", for instance, and the blockbuster hit "The Lord of the Rings", and "The Reflecting Skin".

As part of Mortensen’s tribute, CineVegas screened "Alatriste".

In that project, Vitto exacted a bang-on characterization of the Spanish soldier-turned-mercenary, Captain Alatriste.

Sam Rockwell is a dynamic actor known for taking on challenging roles and creating memorable characters in the process.

After his feature film debut in Francis Ford Coppola's "Clown House", the biz welcomed him with open arms.

Mr. Rockwell has starred in "Joshua", "Heist', "The Green Mile", and the popular hit, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Rockwell’s portrayal of Chuck Barris in "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" won the actor critical praise at the Berlin Film Festival (Best Actor Award).

And, he nabbed Movieline's "Breakthrough Performance" of the year award, for the same role.

Las Vegas...in great New Year spirits! Sahara Buffet specials & Hooters $100 free slots!

St. Pierre vs. Hughes "fight match" (December 29th)

As New Year's approaches, the masses continue to throng into town by the moment.

Meanwhile, I'm having a great winter vacation in "sin" city.

Last night I stood in line for about twenty five minutes for the Buffet Special at the Sahara Hotel, but, it was worth the wait.

There were tiers of succulent fruit, enticing salad dishes for the diet-conscious, and a whole array of scrumptious entrees - prime rib, steamed fish, oysters on the half shell, an assortment of tantalizing pasta dishes - you name it.

For those with a sweet tooth (I confess, moi!) there were mouth-watering pastries, pies, cookies, and other delectable goodies priced at a bargain-basement deal at $6.99.

Then, I hot-footed it over to "Hooters", where management was offering up $100 free slot play.

Heh, Dudes, there are a bevy of bodacious babes on hand to cater to your every need.

So, it may be wise to wet your whistle at their trendy watering hole before moving on for a wild carefree night on the town.

The strip has been bumper to bumper with traffic, so it may be wise to pluck up a day pass when you arrive, at the top of your stay.

The double-decker buses are quite comfortable, and trek up and down Las Vegas Boulevard regularly, so it appears the numero uno choice of travel for most over the holiday season.

The nights have been a bit nippy, though, with biting winds swirling in unexpectedly from the far reaches of the desert.

So, if you haven't sauntered into the popular desert resort yet, it may be wise to pack a sweater, wool cap, and maybe - mittens!

But, no doubt, you'll be slipping into the Casinos along the strip before the night freeze numbs the old bod - each offers up free cocktails to slot players - so take advantage of it.

Actually, if you don't win bundles of moolah at the slot machines, all is not lost.

With the advent of dazzling computer technology in recent years, Casino owners have given the nod to clever creative game-programmers, to spruce up the one-armed bandits with virtual screens that light up, drag you into fantasy scenarios when you hit a bonus line, and - in some instances - draw you into a unique interactive experience.

When I plunked down to play "Floppy Shoes", and hit a hot spot, a colorful clown popped up on screen.

Each time I was instructed to punch his nose, a balloon floated up and indicated the spoils I'd won, until the final end round.

At a slot machine with a theme on magic - a master of the sleight of hand swirled ten golden coins above his head - and invited me to "pick one" ; at which point, he swept 'em up in one fell swoop.

Then, tossed out a handful of coins, the lion's share of my booty.

But, it was the "Dance of the Spirit" which truly captured my imagination.

After hitting a special sequence of icons on the payline, the screen opened up, and a haunting voice invited me on a "Mystical Journey".

At this juncture, I was asked to select my "spirit guide" - which was an Eagle - by the way. Then, I was thrust headlong into a delightful fantasy journey.

In one sequence of events, a dreamcatcher "caught" coins that fell from the sky; in another, an exquisite butterfly fluttered across a screen, beckoned me to choose three options.

A fun, intriguing experience!

As for the Hotels, each has their own house band, in the event guests were not into slots or gambling at the Roulette or Black Jack tables. For the most part, the capable musicians drumed up solid musical stylings with a great party beat.

One woman I innocently slipped into some idle talk with (who turned out to be familiar with my blog, by golly!) lamented that she found it odd that one resort had booked in Kevin Federline (Britney's ex) to host a "party".

"Do you think he can actually draw in people?" she asked me incredulously.

At the Sahara, the house band really rocked - played a lot of olden golden goodies, for example - and got the crowd revved up and tilting on the intimate dance floor.

Yeah, in this instance, you could invite your date to the "Casbah", since that was the name of the joint.

Crowd-pleasing, top-selling shows in Vegas right now include such hits as Zumanity (Cirque Du Soleil), Blue Man Group (Venetian), and the American Superstars (Stratosphere).

Check the listings for details.

As the days have passed, Hotel accommodation has soared in price in anticipation of New Year's Eve.

One day the rate may be $60.00 for a single, for example, the next $100.00.

One hotel manager confessed he was unable to quote a price for tomorrow.

I guess they're waiting to see what the demand is, before they set the rate, and proceed to gouge the visitors for astronomical sums!

Maybe, I'll be homeless tomorrow ("No room at the Inn"?) and trekking back to Los Angeles sooner than I expected.

Actually, the crowds have been in great spirits.

When tourists stumble across a fellow traveler snapping pictures of family or friends on the strip, they wait patiently on the sidelines before passing to be sure the magic of the moment is not ruined.

Elsewhere, the throngs have stood in line patiently at site-seeing spots, courteous to those all around with smiles on their faces.

Yes, the town is in high spirits.

I guess, there's something about the intrigue of a New Year on the horizon, that puts folks' hearts in the right place!
