Lindsay Lohan...Mafia made offer Director couldn't refuse! Gotti tale to lens soon!

Well - there has been quite a flurry of frenzied industry and media attention around Lindsay Lohan over the past few days - in an arena where the sultry drug-adled actress aches for recognition!

The off-again on-again casting of Ms. Lohan in the John Gotti film bio has caused quite a few tongues to wag!

Wouldn't you agree?

Initially, the rumors circulated that the nose-candy taster- oh, so extraordinaire - might have been too much of an insurance risk for the brass at the studio to handle in the throes of her troubles with the long arm of the law.

If you're a Lindsay Lohan fan - or, even not, for that matter - then you're probably familiar with the ongoing saga (of soap opera proportions) that has dragged on in respect to the Gotti project.

Will she or won't she?

Play the role, silly!

The latest word from the director's chair is "yes". Well, sort of.

Although she wasn't cast in the challenging part she pined for, Lindsay will be using her considerable acting chops to carve out a niche for herself in a lesser role on the Gotti project.

Initially, the inexperienced auteur nixed bringing the "Mean Girls" star on board, on the grounds that Ms. Lohan's handlers were making too many demands on behalf of the sexpot.

But, in the end scenario, he capitulated.

Did some goon make him an offer he couldn't refuse?

Uh-huh!

There may have been some strings pulled behind-the-scenes - by Gotti's "people" - just betcha!

Think about it!

Last week, when John Travolta appeared on a night-time talk show to plug the flick, a few pertinent details slipped from his lips unexpectedly.

When asked if Lindsay was slated to play a role, the "Hairspray" star responded in no uncertain terms.

Not only was the frequent jailbird right for the part - the fact she grew up with the "Gotti's" - might factor in.

Did the Director wake up one morning with the head of his prize-winning horse on the pillow next to his nose totally out-of-whack?

Lindsay Lohan...cooking therapeutic! Trial looms on horizon!

Lindsay on path to recovery!

On a rare occasion, troubled starlet - Lindsay Lohan - threw open her doors and invited a film crew in to shoot an exclusive interview with "Extra" (Tabloid News Show).

In recent days, her handlers have run interference with the press - especially when it came to one-on-one interviews - in view of pending legal matters before the court.

In the comfy environs of her home near the beach, the "Mean Girls" star let it slip - for starters - that she loves to cook.

"I find it so therapeutic," she fessed up matter-of-fact.

The stylish sexpot doesn't appear to be packing on any extra flab, in spite of tasting the dishes, during the course of whipping 'em up.

In fact, in contrast to drug-addled bad-boy - Charlie Sheen - Ms. Lohan looked fresh-faced and relaxed as she spoke candidly before the camera.

Lohan, about half-way through the tell-all, was quick to underscore that she's anxious to get back to meaningful work.

Of course, that tough proposition will depend on the power-players in Tinsel Town (is she an insurance risk?) and a Judge presiding over an upcoming trial which looms on the horizon in respect to a felony charge of grand theft.

Ms. Lohan is quite adamant that she intends to "face the music" - and a take a shot at a played-out court-room drama - rather than accept a plea bargain which includes a stint at the local jail.

The ball may be in the recovering addict's court, though.

Over the weekend, it was revealed that her accusers may have sold an incriminating piece of evidence in the case (a video which allegedly caught Lohan in the act of lifting a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery valued at $2500.00) which may have harmed their credibility and tainted the prospects of a guilty verdict at trial.

There may be some wiggle room for Ms. Lohan, after all!

Lindsay Lohan...hand-cuffed & jailed! No bail for screw-up!

Lindsay Lohan was in for a rude awakening when she sashayed into court today to answer to charges that she was  in Violation of probation for failing a mandatory drug test last week.

The Judge's reaction was swift and severe.

Throw her in the slammer!

A few minutes earlier, Lindsay roared up to the courthouse - stylisly outfitted in a dark blazer and peering out from behind dark shades with her mother in tow - half-expecting the proceeding was just a formality.

But, the troubled addict was in for a jolt when the disgruntled Jurist - Eden Fox - instructed the Sheriff to hand-cuff the pretty starlet and take her into custody.

After denying bail, a hearing was set for October 22nd, at which point the "Mean Girls" star was whisked way to the country jail where she is expected to don an orange jumpsuit and suffer a loss of privileges once again.

Ouch!

Those weren't crocodile tears Ms. Lohan shed when she was placed inside an unmarked police car and hauled away to women's facility in Lynwood, California, to be incarcerated once again.

On the sideliness, gossip-mongers tittered.

To paraphrase a quote from the musical "Chicago":

"She had it coming!"

In spite of the fact the high-profile celeb  was released early from Jail last month - and give leniency - Ms. Lohan neglected to count her blessings.

A mandatory drug test which came back "dirty" signaled to the court that the social gadfly was defiantly thumbing her nose at the justicial system.

According to one Sheriff, Lohan is being kept away from the general population at the slammer "for the safety and security of the entire jail system."

Lohan, 24, is to be held in an 8-by-12 foot cell on lone stints that may stretch out twenty-three hours or so without contact with other inmates.

Not a charmed existence, by any stretch of the imagination.

Meditation may be a usetool right now for Lindsay to facilitate self-reflection.

Good luck, Ms. Lohan!

Cocaine...the lure of the potent snuff! Paris Hilton's monkey on-the-back!

In the wake of Paris Hilton’s cocaine bust - and the 29-year-old’s subsequent conviction for possession of the party favor - I have been inclined to reflect on the insidious drug and its potent ability to seduce - and ultimately - addict.

Why insidious?

Unlike a fistful of other designer drugs that splash onto the nightclub scene to enhance the senses for a few short hours on a frenzied dance floor behind heavily-guarded doors - cocaine (a pricey white powder that is usually snorted up the nose) - is in for the long haul.

Having grown up in the sixties - in an era of peace, love, and Jimmy Hendrix - it was a given that the temptation of mood or mind-altering substances (organic or whipped up in a lab by an inventive chemical genius) would rear its ugly head.

In my instant case, friends at a Christmas party in Kitsilano (Vancouver, B.C.), coaxed me into taking a toke on a big fat joint, and I ended up flat on my ass lost in the intricate pattern of an exquisite Persian rug.

At 15, I was pretty impressionable with defenses down, for sure.

But, obviously it was the DMT-cured marijuana that left me “stoned” (an expression of the day) for three days straight.

I was clueless and a tad naïve when I was a teen because I was raised in sheltered environs in the burbs.

In fact, I recall one incident that unfolded in the locker room at Humberside High (!) that makes me shake my head in disbelief when I look back.

On that specific occasion, a fellow student dashed up out-of-the-blue with, and blurted out a puzzling message.

“The gym teacher is a narc,” she hissed at me.

Understandably, I sheepishly froze on the spot; after all, I didn’t know what a “narc” was.

A year or so later - I’d come of age in that regard - shortly after I joined the exodus to the West Coast (Canada) and dropped out to become a hippie.

Although my lifestyle changed - to one that was more condusive to the creative spirit - my lack of interest in the drug culture intensified.

In contrast - my bohemian pals - not only continued to puff away - but moved on to experiment with an exotic array of mind-blowing illegal substances such as window-pane LSD, MDA, and Mescaline.

And, on one desperate occasion, downed some elephant tranquilizer, with staggering results.

No kidding.

The release of the film - “Performance“ (starring Mick Jagger in the role of a reclusive rock star) - prompted adventurous merry pranksters to also gobble down magic mushrooms (which they stumbled on by accident on vacant land overgrown with foliage alongside an airstrip at the Vancouver airport).
In those heady carefree days, critics of the burgeoning Mary-Jane culture, warned that smoking marijuana (or hashish) would open the door to harder drugs such as cocaine and heroin.

Hippies, fans of rock ‘n roll, exalted figureheads of the underground head culture - and a host of other liberated spirits - scoffed at the notion.

Even still - the hilarious lop-sided attitudes expressed in classic flicks like “Reefer Madness” a decade earlier - persisted in perpetuating wild myths about the alleged “killer weed”.

Unfortunately, one prediction appeared to ring true, after I took off the “rose-colored” glasses and faced the truth cold turkey.

It didn’t escape my attention that a number of friends and acquaintances ended up addicted to cocaine - in spite of the fact they swore up-and-down in their innocent teens - that smoking marijuana would never take them down that treacherous path.

In fact, when I trekked up to Vancouver last vacation, I was taken aback at what I encountered, when I dropped by a long-time pal’s digs near Kitsilano Beach.

It was like stepping into a time warp!

The walls were splattered with a smattering of psychedelic posters graced with images of legendary bands such as Led Zeppelin and the awesome rock Diva Janis Joplin & the Holding Company), curtains crafted in sprightly-colored beads (purchased at one of the head shops on 4th Avenue no doubt) were strung up in doorway frames where they doubled as eye-catching crash-pad dividers, a lava lamp continued to transform its contents at a snail’s pace, and drug paraphernalia - a small mirror with traces of white power skimming the surface, razor blades, and a straw (crudely-fashioned out of paper money) - signaled the tell-tale signs of cocaine use.

One of the prime reasons cocaine is such a difficult “monkey” to shake off the back - is in large part due to the fact - “blow” tends to be mind-addicting.

Once the seductive drug has washed over the senses and elevated the user to a high on the edge of Nirvana, the addict is inclined to wallow in the sheer ecstasy of the fleeting moment.

Some kinkier users allege that rubbing cocaine on their sexual organs actually heightens sexual pleasure during love-making.

But, too much of the potent white powder may cause a posse of dudes to suffer from soft-dick syndrome until they “come down” a notch or two.

Unfortunately, when the drug wears off, many users are plunged into depression that is sobering, too.
What cures that ill?

A line of coke, you betcha!

Uh-huh.

Coupled with that downer, the cocaine-addicted are faced with another never-ending dilemma.

A stronger dose of the trendy “snuff” must be ingested to attain the previous level of drug-induced euphoria once tapped at lower dosages.

At this juncture, the addict becomes ensnared, caught in the drug’s stranglehold.

The cost of sustaining the habit may sky-rocket as the hunger for coke increases.

In addition, habitual drug use may negatively impact other areas of the addict’s life.

For starters, the user may start to suffer from nose bleeds,

A handful of sensitive individuals may develop nervous ticks and sensitivity to bright lights.

Hence, the dark shades many addicts wear, even in-doors.

Long-term use may cause mental and emotional problems to surface, too.

In that event, addicts are rarely capable of escaping cocaine’s far-reaching clutches.

In a twisted sort-of-way, Paris was lucky to be “busted”.

Now, under the glare of the spotlight, the pretty heiress will be forced to take appropriate steps (12?) to lick her craving for killer drugs like cocaine.

Is there another reality show on the horizon?

Lindsay Lohan...fesses up to failing drug test! New maturity signals hope!

On the heels of news reports that she failed a recent drug test, Linday Lohan displayed remarkable maturity yesterday, when she fessed up to the allegations.

In fact, at her twitter site - the pretty starlet with the monkey on-her-back - posted a tweet in which she acknowledged that she screwed-up.

Ms. Lohan noted that she is ready to appear before the judge in her case and face the consequences for her actions.

The slip-up may be construed as a probation violation resulting in additional jail time.

In contrast, just a scant few weeks ago - during court proceedings - the troubled addict was in a constant state of denial.

On more than one occasion - Lohan either engaged in deceitful conduct to hide the extent of her addiction - or blatantly tried to toss the blame entirely on others to avoid penalty from the judge presiding over her case.

For example, on one occasion the style maven swore up-and-down that a pair of pants with traces of cocaine in the fabric, were not hers.

Witnesses later testified that the slacks were not only owned by Lohan, but were a favorite pair of casual wear she often wore on a night out on-the-town partying.

Ms. Lohan  also claimed that she was not driving a vehicle during the course of a DUI shake-down - and, in fact - accused two other individuals of being at the wheel until the truth was finally squeezed out of witnesses.

In a series of messages posted late Friday, the actress was forthcoming, however.

"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test," she admitted in no uncertain terms.

"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it," she added solemnly.

According to inside sources, Lindsay intends to continue with the recovery updates on her twitter site.

In my estimation, the fact that Lindsay has acknowledged her problem, signals to me that she has turned the corner on her addiction.

For this reason, she deserves a break!

We're all human, after all, and inclined to stumble now and then.

Personally, I'll be following the posts wholeheartedly, and pulling for her.

If anything, she needs a boost in her morale just now.

Hopefully, fans can step in and fill that void, in the interim.

Lindsay Lohan...jail bird takes flight! Promises! Promises! Promises!

What will I wear for my splashy exit?

"Mean Girls" starlet Lindsay Lohan is probably crawling the walls tonight, in anticipation of an early release, based on promises! promises! promises! alluded to when she first surrendered herself to the slammer in Lynwood (CA) a scant twelve days ago!

Although three 30-day sentences (ninety-days total) threatened to cramp her style and drive her stir crazy over the next year's quarterly calendar - shortly after she was hand-cuffed and spirited away to her cell - there was much to be optimistic about.

On the heels of her incarceration, Sheriff's Deputies were spouting off at the mouth - alerting the media and all within ear shot - that due to overcrowding in the jails and based on time for good behaviour, the troubled young beauty may end up being released a forte-night or so later on or about August 2nd.

Promises! Promises! Promises!

Shortly after the crack-of-dawn, sources informed me that Lindsay was already ahead of the game, arranging for a make-up artist and hairstylist to doll her all up this evening, in the event her handlers at the jailhouse were inclined to release her at the witching hour.

Does she expect to fly out the door and catch the last dance at Voyeur in West Hollywood?

Or, is Lindsay so far on the road to recovery, that she's raring to check into rehab for the final phase of her commitment to society?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Lindsay Lohan...frenzied media event in Beverly Hills! Judge imposes "tough love"...

There was a definite buzz in the air in the tony climbs of Beverly Hills this morning.

Amidst a circus-like atmosphere, Lindsay Lohan's limousine purred up to the curb at 8:36 a.m. (late again, folks) - but for some inexplicable reason - the "Mean Girls" star remained hidden inside behind smoked glass.

On notice that Lindsay Lohan would be appearing for a court proceeding at half-past the hour - a gang of reporters, paparazzi, and hangers on - turned out in full force to capture a shot of Ms. Lohan running the gauntlet in front of the courthouuse.

One reporter noted that he'd never seen anything like it.

In addition to the press, there was also a posse of Court Officals standing on guard, out front.

Fans turned out early and began to congregate on the bustling street, hoping to get a glimpse of troubled film star..

To cover their butts, a few photographers and news organizations, chose to camp out at a side door in the event Ms. Lohan was ushered in that less-traveled route to avoid a crush.

Actually, the Linday entrance went off without a hitch (at long last).

Attired in an elegant dark suit - and white blouse open at the collar - the mood was definitely somber (almost business-like).

At issue today was Lindsay's failure to appear before the Judge last week and a determination as to whether Ms. Lohan violated her probation.

As I reported mid-week, Ms. Lohan was three classes short of completing her court-ordered Alchohol and Drug Abuse program.

Four days prior to Ms. Lohan's court date to determine the status of her probation - Lindsay elected to jet off to the Cannes Film Festival - despite warnings from friends and business associates that she was cutting it short.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/05/lindsay-lohanbench-warrant-issued.html

The star of the upcoming screen bio on porn star - Linda Lovelace - was  preparing to fly home to the U.S. to make the court hearing when her passport was allegedly stolen.

Some speculated it was a delaying-and-stalling tactic or a ruse to buy more time.

In response, the angry Judge issued an arrest warrant and imposed $100,000.00 bail.

That warrant was lifted once her lawyers posted a bond to secure it ($10,000.00) later in the day.

Today, the media hounds went wild, when she alighted from the high-end vehicle.

The fast-footed newsies scrambled across the lawn to a perch that was blessed with a full view of Ms. Lohan striding through security.

Once inside, and seated, the Judge read the terms and conditions of her release.

Lindsay Lohan would have to agree to random Drug and Alcohol testing, for starters.

Once a week, Lindsay would also be required to appear at a testing facility, to verify she was in compliance with the court's order (No Alcohol).

Having stated the terms and conditions of probation,  the Judge proceeded to probe Lindsay and her lawyer further.

"Do you accept the terms?"

The two locked heads - at which point - the lawyer noted that they would prefer there not be any requirement of a scram device.

"Lindsay has some film work coming up and that stipulation would interfere," she noted in so many words.

Oh, she was sharp alright.

But not as intelligent (and insightful) as the Judge who knew her "stuff".

"Are you formally objecting to the "order" or accepting the terms," the Judge queried in a no-nonesense manner.

The lawyer and Lindsay whispered their thoughts to each other for a moment or two, then agreed to the conditions.

The prosecutor's lawyer was not going to let go on the "passport' issue.

"I'd like to see Ms. Lohan produce copies of airline tickets for the flight scheduled for  May 19th."

Gotcha?

Surprise!

Ms. Lohan offered copies of the documents for the court to review.

At the close of the hearing, the Judge urged Lindsay to appear for all court-ordered tests.

"To the court, a failure to appear, is a dirty test."

A full hearing in July will seek to determine if Ms. Lohan was in Violation of Probatio - and if so - what penalty should be imposed.

And, how was your day?

Lindsay Lohan... paparazzi push into Cactus Plant! Sloppy Police escort...

Lindsay Lohan hit the party circuit late last night, but it was not a pretty sight!

Frenzied media ambushed the troubled celebrity when she attempted to exit a sleek black SUV in a narrow driveway en route to party-tay!

A scuffle broke out as Lindsay - in a pitch black punker-style wig and high-end designer threads  - attempted to elude the aggresive paparazzi in hot pursuit.

Suddenly, the emotionally-wrought star slipped and fell right into a Cactus plant!

The controversial actress - known for her scandalous lifestyle and addiction to drugs - managed to slip in the front door intact.

The owner of the condo flew outside and yelled at the paparazzi in disgust.

"Get off my property."

Instead of complying with the bold-faced demand, the gossip hounds skulked around outside waiting for another photo op.

They didn't have to wait long.

Shortly after the initial spill, a squad car pulled up, and police officers proceeded to escort Lindsay down the drive to a waiting vehicle.

Oooops!

The sloppy actress slipped a second time and nearly ended up on her a**, seemingly  negating claims earlier that the Paparazzi deliberately pushed her.

Alcoholism...Actor Keifer Sutherland & the monkey-on-his-back!

Keifer Sutherland was sentenced to forty-eight days in the city jail in connection with a misdemeanor drunk driving charge in West Hollywood a few months ago when he was stopped after making an illegal U-Turn at La Cienega and Beverly Blvd's in West Hollywood.

On the heels of the bust, the media noted that Sutherland had a history of alcohol abuse, and proceeded to tar-and-feather him in the press.

I was surprised that such a dedicated actor - succeeding in a challenging career as an actor - would allow such a monkey to ride on his back.

What was the problem?

A couple of weeks later one of the major weekly rags ran a story on the incident.

The in-depth feature threw the spotlight on Sutherland's past run-ins with alcohol and questionable conduct in public - outrageous and shameful, at times - that plagued the star of the Fox hit TV Drama Series, 24.

But, there was nothing constructive about the report.

For example, the write neglected to offer up any statistics on the issue of alchohol abuse.

Or, even enlighten the reader on how the "disease" might be cured.

Some say, that if your parents drank, you're bound to have a propensity for social drinking, too.

And, if your mother imbibed while you were in the womb, it is wholly conceivable you may end up a "born-alcoholic".

In fact, studies examining adopted children, have shown that offspring of alcoholic biological parents have an increased risk of becoming hard-core drinkers.

Also, recent research has implicated a gene (D2 dopamine receptor) that - when inherited in a specific form - may increase an individual's chance of developing chronic alcoholism.

According to researchers, twice as many men are alcoholics. And, ten to twenty-three percent of alcohol-consuming individuals, are considered bona fide alcoholics.

Alcoholism can be tricky, too.

It's a demon that often lurks beneath the surface, ready to trip up the individual without a watchful eye.

Usually, a variety of factors contribute to the development of alcoholism.

Social factors include family influence, peers, and society.

How quickly the problem develops may depend on the availability of alcohol, as well as psychological factors, which may elevate levels of stress, inadequate coping mechanisms, and reinforcement of alcohol use from other drinkers.

The factors contributing to initial alcohol use may vary from person to person.

The disorder is so complex, however, that no single gene is likely to be a major culprit.

The amygdala is an area of the brain thought to play a role in the emotional aspects of craving, which can lead to addiction.

One study found that the amygdala is smaller in subjects with family histories of alcoholism, suggesting that inherited differences in brain structure may affect risk.

Other studies suggest that certain brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) and proteins in the amygdala region may be involved in the link between anxiety and alcoholism.

Because alcohol is not found easily in nature, genetic mechanisms to protect against excessive consumption may not have evolved in humans as they frequently have for protection against natural threats.

Therefore, some evidence indicates that a lack of genetic protection plays a major role in alcoholism.

In view of this, it is theorized that people with a family history of alcoholism tend to "hold their liquor" better than those without such a history.

Experts suggest some people may inherit a lack of those warning signals that ordinarily make people stop drinking.

Genes that regulate certain chemical byproducts of alcohol are under intense scrutiny as well.

Alcohol is metabolized in a two-stage process.

First, it is first converted to acetaldehyde (AcH), which is then converted into acetate.

AcH is being researched because it plays a role in most actions of alcohol, including damaging effects on the liver and upper airway.

It also may be protective.

For example, some people, particularly in Asian and Jewish populations, may be less likely to become alcoholic because of a genetic deficiency in AcH, which produces a buildup of acetate after drinking alcohol.

Because acetate is toxic and in high amounts causes flushing, dizziness, and nausea, individuals with this genetic factor are less likely to become alcoholic.

This deficiency is not completely protective against drinking, however, particularly if there is social pressure and high exposure to alcohol, such as among college fraternity members.

Other intriguing studies indicate that some people with alcoholism may have an inherited dysfunction in the transmission of serotonin. Serotonin is an important brain chemical messenger known as a neurotransmitter. It is important for well-being and associated behaviors (e.g., eating, relaxation, sleep).

Curiously, abnormal serotonin levels are associated with high levels of tolerance for alcohol. They are also linked to impulsive and aggressive behaviors, which can predispose people to drink and can increase the risk for dangerous behaviors and suicide in alcoholics. Serotonin abnormalities can also develop from environmental pressures as well, such as early loss in childhood.

Since that factor applies to me, it causes me pause to consider the ramifications.

Initially, I never thought I had a problem with drinking, until I backed my car into a pole in an alley one dark, drunken night.

The following morning as I surveyed the gash in the rear bumper, it suddenly hit me.

Drinking problem!

Until that moment, an alcoholic beverage was simply a stress-releaser.

I rarely ever sauntered out to a local bar for a social drink, for instance.

After a rough day on the set, I'd snatch up a couple of brewskies at the liquor store, and head home to nurse them by the TV 'til I dozed off to sleep.

There were other rules to my drinking, as well.

Imbibing in the day was a no-no. So, was taking "a hair of the dog that bit me".

But, early on, it did not escape my attention how clever the demon "rum" was.

I was able to go out one evening for a cocktail or two, then quit for the night.

But, the following week, I'd convince myself wholeheartedly that "three was okay".

After that, four was no problem, or so I convinced myself!

That's one of the characteristic of alcoholism, the inability to control the amount of alcohol consumed.

Not every alcoholic will drink themselves into a stupor, but he or she may be unable to recognize when too much alcohol is more than enough.

One of the most frustrating factors in dealing with alcoholism?

The phenomenon known as "denial".

On the long path towards mental, physical and moral decline, usually the first attribute "to go" is honesty, with self-esteem to follow.

Then, it becomes necessary - as the alcoholic increasingly drinks more - to hide the fact from those around him. Depending upon the circumstances, the alcoholic may drink openly, but more-often-than-not, usually conceals the amount imbibed.

The goal is accomplished by simply not drinking around those closest.

The frequency of consumption is often difficult to control, as well. An alcoholic may drink at inappropriate times during lunch hour or in the early hours of dawn. An alcoholic drinks alone, in a social setting, at any time during the day. In fact, for an alcoholic, there is a preoccupation with the desire to consume alcohol combined with a denial that there is a problem with actual drinking.

The problem for me? When I was drinking, I wanted everyone else to join in.

So, I ordered up rounds for the whole gang, in close proximity.

Yeah, it became costly. American Express? I had to leave home without it!

But, at least I was a happy drinker...some get mean, or morose, or have a tendency to slip into a bluesy, unhappy state.

For the most part, alcohol stimulates the release of neurotransmitters and other chemicals that produce the following pleasurable feelings; for instance, an increase of dopamine produces euphoria and a sensation of being rewarded.

In addition, serotonin production may be accelerated which is tied to feelings of well-being. Chemical balances as they relate to opioid peptides, important for well-being, may be affected, too.

Over time, however, heavy alcohol use appears to deplete the stores of dopamine and serotonin. Persistent drinking, therefore, eventually fails to restore mood, but by then the drinker has been conditioned to believe that alcohol will improve spirits

People forget that alcohol is a depressant. The first couple of drinks may result in a high, elevate the mood. After that, the habitual user is bound to get depressed, foggy-headed, and end up swimming in emotions of all kinds - positive and negative.

Some drink to steal away from problems.

Personally, I found that when I drank, my thought processes accelerated. So, in essence, I was not escaping - like most - but dealing with reality face-to-face.

Because alcohol blocks out emotional pain, it is often perceived as a safe haven in a moment of crisis. Associated with freedom and loss of inhibition, some conjecture the drinking experience offsets the tedium of daily routines.

But, when the alcoholic tries to quit drinking, the brain seeks to restore what it perceives to be its equilibrium. In that scenario, Doctors note that the brain's best weapons to achieve this are depression, anxiety, and stress (the emotional equivalents of physical pain), which are produced by brain chemical imbalances.

These negative moods continue to tempt alcoholics to return to drinking long after physical withdrawal symptoms have abated.

In spite of a high intelligence in some individuals, the over-agitated brain will use all its powers of rationalization to persuade the patient to return to drinking. According to a 1999 study, having a high or low IQ has little effect on quitting.

A handful of my own friends start drinking around five in the afternoon and continue non-stop until late in the evening. Do they have a problem?

Maybe not.

I often wish I could just have a drink or two socially, relax, and be part of the crowd.

There is not a predetermined set of rules which clarifies the exact moment that social drinking becomes problem drinking and transforms into alcoholism, but - it is well-established that alcoholism eventually overcomes a person’s ability to think clearly. It can control one’s emotions and behaviors and ultimately dominate the life, environment, and relationships of the addled.

Long ago, I realized that if I sipped on one ale, I'd end up falling off the wagon; to stumble home later, after about ten drinks.

Thank God, misadventure did not get the best of me on those occasions, and I did not end up in serious legal trouble with the law due to some naughty behavior on the town.

Symptoms of Alcohol Dependence

According to the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders", the Fourth Edition...the symptoms of alcohol dependence are many.

For starters, a warning flag goes up when the individual starts to neglect other activities. Indeed, if alcohol use reduces or eliminates important social, work-related or recreational activities, a problem is underfoot.

Then, there's the issue of excessive consumption...if a drinker begins to consume larger amounts of alcohol over a longer period of time than intended, this is a sign of trouble on the horizon.

Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control how much he or she drinks is an indication that alcoholism may have taken a hold and may be difficult to break free from without help from outside sources.

If the individual continues to consume alcohol - unaware that drinking is causing or contributing to a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem - then there may be a need for intervention.

If a so-called social drinker spends an abnormal amount of recreation time on activities involved with obtaining, using and/or recovering from the effects of alcohol, it is a surefire sign that a line has been crossed.

Actual physical withdrawal occurs when drinking for a short period of time is stopped and he or she experiences symptoms such as nausea, sweating, shaking or anxiety. Also, the issue may enter a new phase when the drinker has lost tolerance and needs increasing amounts of alcohol to achieve the same level of intoxication.

The bottom line?

Alcoholism is a sneaky disease characterized by need and denial.

Alcoholics often do not realize they are addicted to alcohol until it is too late. If you have made the decision to stop drinking any alcoholic beverage for a relatively short amount of time, but found that you were unable to abstain from alcohol, you may be an alcoholic.

Do people often tell you that you have a problem with alcohol?

Do you argue with friends or family about the amounts of alcohol you drink?

Sometimes the family and friends of alcoholics recognize the signs and symptoms of alcoholism, but the alcoholic denies there is a problem. If this is true for you, and you find that you have negative thoughts about the people who are interfering or being bossy about your drinking, then you may be an alcoholic.

It is important to realize that any life change, even changes for the better, may cause temporary grief and anxiety.

With time and the substitution of healthier pleasures the emotional turmoil weakens and can be overcome.

Close friends and even intimate partners may have difficulty in changing their responses to the newly sober person - even worse - may encourage a return to drinking.

The recoveree may feel un-cool, left out.

These influences are known as "triggers".

Friends may not easily accept the sober, perhaps more subdued, ex-drinker.

In such cases, a separation from these "enablers" may be necessary for survival.

I drank non-alcoholic beer for awhile to give the appearance of drinking at social events, but cleverly hid the label, so no one would chastise me.

You know what they say, never trust a non-drinker.

A sense of isolation, a loss of enjoyment, and the ex-drinker's belief that pity, not respect, is guiding a friend's attitude can lead to loneliness, low self-esteem, and a strong desire to drink again.

For this reason, alcoholism is best treated by professionals trained in addiction medicine. Physicians and other health care workers are best suited to manage alcohol withdrawal and the medical disorders associated with alcoholism.

In fact, home therapy without supervision by a trained professional may be life threatening because of complications from alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Usually an alcoholic will experience alcohol withdrawal 6-8 hours after cutting down or stopping alcohol consumption.

Several levels of care are available to treat alcoholism.

Medically managed hospital-based detoxification and rehabilitation programs are used for more severe cases of dependence that occur with medical and psychiatric complications. Medically monitored detoxification and rehabilitation programs are used for people who are dependent on alcohol and who do not require more closely supervised medical care.

The purpose of detoxification is to safely withdraw the alcoholic from alcohol and to help him or her enter a treatment program. The purpose of a rehabilitation program is to help the alcoholic accept the disease, begin to develop skills for sober living, and get enrolled in ongoing treatment and self-help programs. Most detoxification programs last just a few days. Most medically managed or monitored rehabilitation programs last less than 2 weeks.

Many alcoholics benefit from longer-term rehabilitation programs, day treatment programs, or outpatient programs. These programs involve education, therapy, addressing problems contributing to or resulting from the alcoholism, and learning skills to manage the alcoholism over time.

These skills include, but are not limited to, the following: learning to identify and manage cravings to drink alcohol, resisting social pressures to engage in substance use, changing health care habits and lifestyle (for example, improving diet and sleep hygiene, and avoiding high-risk people, places, and events), learning to challenge alcoholic thinking (thoughts such as: I need a drink to fit in, have fun, or deal with stress), developing a recovery support system and learning how to reach out for help and support from others, learning to deal with emotions (anger, anxiety, boredom, depression) and stressors without reliance on alcohol, identifying and managing relapse warning signs before alcohol is used, and finally, anticipating the possibility of relapse and addressing high-risk relapse factors.

Several studies have shown that about half of alcoholics who have successfully undergone detoxification will relapse within 6-12 months. Remaining alcohol-free is a very difficult task for most alcoholics.

Alcoholism is a chronic disease not unlike diabetes or congestive heart failure.

If a person continues to drink excessively after numerous or ongoing treatments, their prognosis is very poor. Persistent heavy drinkers will often succumb to the effects of alcohol. At this juncture, physical health problems may arise.

Too late, the alcoholic must face the reality of the failure to deal with the problem; for instance, the excessive imbibing may have resulted in serious damage to the liver, overall health, without possibility of recovery.

Mortality is a severe end game to deal with in that scenario.

So, take action now, if alcohol is throwing your life off-kilter, eh?
