Ryan Reynolds...masturbates to Spanish Soap Operas! Prefers 6 pack of beer, eh?

On the show-biz circuit to promote the "Green Lantern" (released around the country at a theatre near you this week) Ryan Reynolds (sexy flavor of the month) fessed up that he was suspended from a high school in Vancouver (B.C.) for being a naughty cut-up when he was a pimply-faced teen.

But, the penalty - according to the buffed hunk (who sauntered out from behind the curtain in an elegant cream-colored suit teamed with a tasteful chic tie on one top-rated talk-show) - was a plus.

"That's punishment? Staying home from school?" he chuckled to the host, in so many words.

"I just laid back on my bed all day and masturbated to Spanish soap operas!"

Uh-huh!

Those Latino hunks are sure to cause a rise in the old Levis - if that's your cup-of-tea - that is.

Maybe Ryan should hook up with Ricky Martin next time they cross paths on the red carpet, eh?

By the way, Mr. Reynolds appears to have "butched-up" his act a smidgen since the last time I caught one of his insightful (!) interviews on the telly.

Somehow, the outgoing performer came across as less "gay" than he usually does.

His cut muscled bod doesn't hurt his image, for starters.

But, according to the charismatic actor - who triggers whoops and hollers from fans (both female & male) whenever he makes a public appearance (and in movie theatres when he pops up on screen) - he's ready to heave whenever a reporter quizzes him about his awesome abs.

Now that the action-adventure film is in the can and screening around the Nation - and the strenuous work-outs are behind him - the handsome thespian underscores that he pines to loll about on the couch and chug-a-lug about ten beers.

"I'm Canadian, after all," he shrugs, without apology.

Yup!

Us Canucks can party-hearty, alright.

And, kick some butt, when the local hockey team loses big time in a sports match.

By the way, I intend to catch the "Green Lantern" over the weekend (and will post a review in the next few days).

'Til then!

Chris Klein...chowing down on American Pie! DUI rehab blues?!

Idle hands are the Devil's playground.

In view of that, just maybe Chris Klein's nod to reprise his role in the successful "American Pie" franchis is a blessing in disguise.

Though his career started out promising, the actor's bid for superstardom fell short when the troubled talent got derailed by a couple of DUI's, which forced him to pine on the sidelines in rehab 'til he sobered up.

Post:  06/16/2010

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/06/chris-kleinpopular-actor-busted-for-dui.html

Klein's break in the business was not only typical - but a bit cliche - in many respects.

A hot-shot director saunters into town to scout a location for his upcoming flick - and ends up discovering an unknown actor strolling down the hall - while attending high schoo.

Before you can say - "overnight success" - Klein is being whisked around Tinsel Town in stretch limos and his acting career is about to skyrocket.

Unfortunately, he gets side-lined because of a thirst for the old demon rum!

Typical Hollywood actor's rags-to-riches story, eh?

But, there was one thing that set Klein apart from his contemporaries.

Unlike his competitive acting buddies - the kid from nowhere - is genuine!

When I attended a screening of a couple of flicks Klein starred in at the New Beverly Cinema last year - where he appeared for an insightful Q & A with a couple of luminaries in the industry (Director Jason Reitman and Jennifer Grey) I was struck by that fact right-off-the-bat.

Mr. Klein was down-to-earth and displayed a keen sense of humor.

Pretty hunky, too.

But, can he handle meatier roles?

Maybe, but for now he appears to be satisfied chowing down on a piece of humble pie!

Break a leg, Chris!

Robert De Niro...Cannes Film Festival names actor President of Jury panel!

Robert De Niro is brimming with a grin from ear-to-ear for good reason!

Organizers for the tony 64th Annual "Cannes Film Festival" - which launches in May on the exotic French Riviera - have invited the respected thespian to head up the Jury Panel for a third time.

De Niro - starring in the comedy - "The Little Flockers" (currently in wide release around the country) last took on the coveted duties twice in the heady 80's.

Film buffs may recall that De Niro's break-out thriller - Taxi Driver - won the Palme d'or in 1976.

Break a leg, Bobby!

Lindsay Lohan...fesses up to failing drug test! New maturity signals hope!

On the heels of news reports that she failed a recent drug test, Linday Lohan displayed remarkable maturity yesterday, when she fessed up to the allegations.

In fact, at her twitter site - the pretty starlet with the monkey on-her-back - posted a tweet in which she acknowledged that she screwed-up.

Ms. Lohan noted that she is ready to appear before the judge in her case and face the consequences for her actions.

The slip-up may be construed as a probation violation resulting in additional jail time.

In contrast, just a scant few weeks ago - during court proceedings - the troubled addict was in a constant state of denial.

On more than one occasion - Lohan either engaged in deceitful conduct to hide the extent of her addiction - or blatantly tried to toss the blame entirely on others to avoid penalty from the judge presiding over her case.

For example, on one occasion the style maven swore up-and-down that a pair of pants with traces of cocaine in the fabric, were not hers.

Witnesses later testified that the slacks were not only owned by Lohan, but were a favorite pair of casual wear she often wore on a night out on-the-town partying.

Ms. Lohan  also claimed that she was not driving a vehicle during the course of a DUI shake-down - and, in fact - accused two other individuals of being at the wheel until the truth was finally squeezed out of witnesses.

In a series of messages posted late Friday, the actress was forthcoming, however.

"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test," she admitted in no uncertain terms.

"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it," she added solemnly.

According to inside sources, Lindsay intends to continue with the recovery updates on her twitter site.

In my estimation, the fact that Lindsay has acknowledged her problem, signals to me that she has turned the corner on her addiction.

For this reason, she deserves a break!

We're all human, after all, and inclined to stumble now and then.

Personally, I'll be following the posts wholeheartedly, and pulling for her.

If anything, she needs a boost in her morale just now.

Hopefully, fans can step in and fill that void, in the interim.

Dave Letterman Late Show...Joaquin Phoenix rises from ashes! Thursday Sept. 16th!

Was Dave Lettermann spooked by Joaquin?

Joaquin Phoenix continues to play peek-a-boo!

And, Dave Letterman is keen on nabbing the kudos, for his tie-in.

"Joaquin Phoenix here?"

According to the cheeky talk-show host, that was the question everyone was asking - after the thespian's must-see television appearance with Dave in 2009 - that is now part of the just-released documentary (Casey Affleck/Director).

"I'm Still Here."

And, on Wednesday (September 22nd) Joaquin returns to Letterman's LATE SHOW for his first television appearance since "the incident".

I attended the actor's red-carpet appearance at the Chinese Theatre last year - where I personally witnessed the free-falling Phoenix sip liquor out of a silver flask tucked away in a coat pocket - as he mystified the paparazzi with a bizarre bare-knuckled message written in a scrawl on stubby fingers.

"Good Bye!"

Joaquin's swan song was conjured up just shy of his announcement to quit acting.

So, like so other fans - I await with bated breath for Joaquin's return - on the CBS talk fest.

Though, the critics have panned it.

Just maybe, a repeat of his original appearance on Letterman (to be broadcast on Thursday) may save him from the lions.

If not, just remember, good actors are a dime-a-dozen!

Who the heck needs him?

Sofia Coppola..."Somewhere" within striking distance! Stephen Dorff stars...

Once again, Sofia  Coppola intrigues film buffs with her choice of film projects - and likewise - her tendency to be fascinated by the pitfalls of excess.

The shy daughter of a giant in the film industry (director Francis Ford Coppola) - who conjured up a broad masterful portait of historical Diva Marie Antoinette - recently set her sights on a captivating subject much closer to home.

In "Somewhere", Ms. Coppola focuses her insightful lens on a charismatic actor at the height of his powers of seduction, and in the process takes a behind-the-scenes foray into an old Hollywood cliche.

Will success spoil Rock Hunter?

Although the young director's insightful lens focuses on life in the fast lane and its temptations - obsessions with romantic trysts, luxury Hotels and high-end sports cars - "Somewhere" is also a tale about a man in crisis.

Stephen Dorff was cast to play the A-list actor - which was ironic - when you consider that in real life he never made that grade.

Ms.Coppola is best-known for her screenplay - "Lost in Translation" - which nabbed her an Academy Award a scant few years back.

Hotel scenes for the flick - which premiered in Italy this past week - were shot at the chic Chateau Marmont, a popular hang-out for actors in town.

"I like hotels for settings, they are an impermanent place. A lot of the characters I am interested in are in a moment of transition and it seems fitting that they would be in an impermanent setting," Sofia gushed to one reporter in recent days.

Dorff conjectured that "Somewhere" was all about becoming a man.

In the instance of his character, the transformation comes about when his young daughter turns up on his doorstep, after endless dark nights of the soul have taken their toll.

Coppola piped up at one point that to tell the story from a guy's point of view was a challenge because the emotional life of men was different than hers.

Was the mission accomplished?

You be the Judge.

The feature is slated for release in December.

Mark Wahlberg...perplexed by Star on Walk of Fame!

Just goes to show 'ya what a little bumping and grinding will do for a dude!

One minute, Marky Mark (Kids on the Block) was frenetically perking up his pecs with strenuous bouts of push-ups backstage before sauntering into the glare of the spotlight to entertain a frenzied hip-hop fan base - and in the next - found himself acting in big budget features rustling up Oscar nominations.

If you recall, Wahlberg was nominated for an Academy Award for his so-so acting performance in Martin Scorsese's drama "The Departed".

When it was announced a few days ago that the crotch-grabbing former Calvin Klein model was about to get some true Hollywood respect, he couldn't quite get a handle on it.

A case in point.

When the toothy actor/cum/toy-boy tease with the infectious grin and pecs to die for - was informed that he was being honored with a pristine star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - he was literally speechless.

With family in tow, gun shy Wahlberg was inclined to turn the speech-making duties over to good pal and confidante - Will Ferrell - when he showed up to acknowledge the - um - kudo?

“I really felt like this was a big practical joke," Wahlberg mumbled, almost embarrassed by an  accollade that many equate with the pinnacle of success in their film or TV career.

The ballsy fun-loving comic had no qualms filling in for the Boogie Nights star.

“I’m flattered and honoured to speak on Mark’s behalf," he solemnly started off.

But, a second or two later, Will  shifted gears and engaged in a few hi-jinks to the delight of the throngs of fans who turned out to get a glimpse of the action-hero.

“I loved him in all the Bourne movies,” Ferrell  joked.

“Just the best.”

Some pooh-poohed Wahlberg's wimpy response to the plaudit - and shook their heads when the cocky producer of HBO's "Entourage" - failed to muster up a quip or two at the podium on that auspicious day.

The B-list actor explained it all away the following day in a bold-faced effort to regain favor with the Chamber of Commerce, all die-hard fans, and his fellow actors.

“The last time I prepared something was actually at the Academy Awards. I wrote a little speech, and obviously, I didn’t win that."

Didn't anyone inform him that he was the only one in-the-running for a star on the "Walk of Fame" in the name of Mark Wahlberg?

Duh!

The coveted place-holder on Hollywood Boulevard was yours for the taking, Marky Mark, no kidding!

Chris Klein...popular actor busted for DUI @ crack of dawn!

Likeable lug Chris Klein was spied weaving across the white line at approximately 3:15 a.m. this morning -  according to an officer on duty at the California Highway Patrol - who promptly signalled the popular actor to pull over to the curb.

The 31-year-old stud is well-known for appearing in a handful of comedies that have faired well at the box office (American Pie).

At the New Beverly Cinema a few weeks ago, at a sceening of "Election", Mr. Klein appeared in person at the highly-publicized event and entertained fans with side-splitting anecdotes that left the filmgoers rolling in the aisles.

That night, Klein noted that he was discovered by the director one day, when he was in town scouting locations for his upcoming film "Election".

Klein was behind the wheel of his black 1999 when the alert copper caught sight of him having difficulty maneuvering the vehicle at the intersection of the 101 Freeway and Woodman Avenue in the Valley.

According to police reports, Klein was booked at the Van Nuys Police Station (armpit of the Nation) for driving under the influence of alcohol and released without bail.

In the past, sexy Klein has been linked romantically to high-profile actress Katie Holmes.

Maybe he was cryin' the blues last night?

Oscars...dazzling Governor's Ball! Chic after-party gate-crasher's dream...

Chic Governor's Ball tough to crash, Mr. President!

The red carpets will be ceremoniously rolled out, dazzling celebrities will trip-the-light-fantastic as swarms of paparazzi and gushing fans gaze on from the sidelines, little Gold Statuettes will be touted and bestowed on worthy (!) recipients -  then - it's off to the Cinderella Ball!

Well, not exactly, but the the Oscar afer-party is the biggest soiree to attend on March 7th, when the curtain for the televised Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences shutters down and the brilliant kleig lights are packed away 'til next year.

1500 winners will trot a few steps from the Kodak Theatre to the Grand Ballroom next door to toast each other with a little bubbly (and in some instances, heal each other's open wounds).

This year, the par-tay hearty - and the chic elite of Tinsel Town - will eat, drink, and be merry amidst a stunning decor lifted from the divine Art Deco era.

Event producer Cheryl Cecchetto glowed with pride recently when she boasted to the media that everything from the lighting design to the servers' outfits was carefully chosen to evoke the feel (and dramatic flair) of the period.

"The Governor's Ball will fuse eclectic and innovative design elements of the era and style," she beamed.

"The overall look will marry artistic originality with the Academy's own tradition of class and elegance."

Think Chrysler building, in New York City, folks!

On the festive occasion, guests will be impressed by the table dressings, charcoal grey tablecloths fashioned with a subtle understated sheen, exquisitely crafted arrangements in purple, and Calla lilies designed by Mark Held of Mark's Garden.

A heavenly touch has been accomplished by virtue of a tasteful interplay of hydranges air-transported in from New Zealand, Rothchild Vanda orchids shipped first class from Thailand, and organically grown roses from Ecuador.

The menu sounds scrumptuous with main entrees such as wild salmon, Taylor Bay scallops, and lusty chicken pot pie.

Before the sit-down supper, well-mannered servers will tour the ballroom with hors d'oeuvres sure to be party-pleasers - black truffle and ricota cheese mini-pizzas, mini kobe burgers, and smoked salmon pizzas with caviar and dill cream - for starters (literally).

Desserts sound YUMMY, too.

Guests will nibble on baked alaska with espresso glace, chocolate sorbet, and toasted meringue.

Following tradition, Wolfgang Puck has created mini-Oscars in delicious chocolate with a fine spray of edible gold dust that will be inclined to wink at guests as the dazzling facets catch the light.

Golly, my invite hasn't arrived yet!

Has yours?

Gremlins at the U.S. Postal Service must have snatched them up, eh?

Wink! Wink!

Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves & Robert Downey...dared to dream! Photographer publishes pre-Tinsel stills!

If you're a struggling actor hitting the pavement toiling for gigs - then you hit it big - you can bet your sweet bippy crafty characters will slip out of the woodwork later anxious to cash in.

Such is the case with - "They Dared to Dream" - a just-published collection of photos crammed into a slim volume and being offered up to fans hungry for early images of the likes of Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, and Robert Downey, Jr.

At a sparsely-attended book-signing event at "A Different Light" in West Hollywood, the author - Karen Bystedt - was on hand to chat up avid book readers there to gobble up all the juicy tidbits of gossip the photographer was thrilled to whisper in their ear.

When I sauntered in - old interviews taped in tandem with the photo sessions of yesteryear crackled overhead - as celebrity enthusiasts strained in their seats to catch every little word that squawked out over the cheapo speakers.

Half-sounding like ghosts from the past - Pitt and the others (now household names) - shared their innermost thoughts, gnawing fears, and starry-eyed dreams for the future.

Robert Downey Jr. noted for the record, for instance, that he liked things to be predictable.

That's why he did drugs, he conjectured.

"If I smoke marijuana, I know what the outcome will be. I'll get stoned!"

In new situations, there was never any guarantee how events would pan out, so venturing forth into unknown uncharted waters was a troubling proposition for the introspective actor.

Pitt - in an interview that echoed similar sentiments in a broadcast which recently aired on night-time gossip TV - whined about being overwhelmed by the "spotlight" and expounded on the emotional traumas he experienced mixing in with high-profile celebrities (being just a kid from the sticks and all).

"I use to be in awe of these guys," he lamented, or something to that effect.

"Whoa! Now, here I am working with 'em."

Slow down, dude! Get a hold of yourself.

Courtney Cox confessed she slept on floors and stayed with friends until her showbiz break came.

If you can imagine it, even Keanu Reeves managed to cough up a nugget or two of wisdom about his rise to stardom.

Ms. Bystedt titillated the rapt audience when she hinted at some salacious gossip about actor David Duchovny.

Apparently, the struggling thespian was working on an experimental project about phones and sex, when she was introduced at a party.

"He told me he was having sex problems."

Do tell!

Shortly after that little episode, the Californian landed X-Files.

The photographer was open and outgoing at the book store until her press agent put a muzzle on her.

For instance - when I asked her if she anticipated that the fledgling actors she was capturing on film were ever going to snag star status in Hollywood - the pushy overbearing publicist responded on her behalf before she could get a word in edgewise.

"For the sake of the press," he piped up pointedly - after giving a slight glance in my direction - "you should say 'yes', that's why you took their photos."

At this juncture, she responded in kind on cue!

The pretty tall blond photographer was doin' fine 'til he butted in.

Personally, I prefer responses that rise up straight from the heart.

Sugary pap prepared by a publicist is not my cup of tea, thank you very much.

I did not have the opportunity to thumb through the book and peruse the photos in advance of her scheduled appearance, so I asked Ms. Bystedt whose photographic stills she might compare her musings to.

"No one is comparable," her PR man blurted out before she could utter a word.

On the heels of his strident endorsement - she fessed up - too.

"My work can't be compared to that of anyone else."

Is that because the photos are undistinguished at best?

Usually, photographers develop their own distinctive style which sets them apart.

Annie Leibovitz, for instance, attained great acclaim not only because she captured an elusive quality about her subjects, but due to the fact she facilitated bold contemporary ideas into the mix which effectively transformed the stills into works of art.

Likewise - Bruce Weber, Newton and others - climbed to the top of the pile not only through the use of highly original stylized techniques, but because they implanted their own inimitable signature style which set them apart.

When I thumbed through the book, I found myself gazing on a handful of pretty portraits, for the most part.

Ms. Bystedt uses a lot of soft lighting and warm tones with very little contrast or tension within the frame.

So, the photos tend to be warm and fuzzy lens renderings, with nary a hint of personality or mystery bubbling up from within.

Consequently, the photographs are mediocre, at best.

In fact, two photographs of Keanu Reeves are downright boring.

"They fly in from everywhere to have their photo taken," her PR dude exalted.

Well, the reason for that is a no-brainer.

Actors are a vain lot.

Once a performer gets wind of a photographer that is capable of flattering a subject, they'll bang down the door for a photo shoot and pay through the nose, if they have to.

Until the next whiz-kid photog happens along.

It's obvious from the get-go that this vanity publication is geared towards capitalizing on actor Brad Pitt's fame and success.

His face graces the flap of the jacket in a sly effort to boost sales, no doubt.

At the web site designed to promote the handsome-looking publication, the photographer has also used a tired old web technique to put the "focus" on megastar Pitt to maximum effect.

When the page loads, the cover shot of the actor slides into frame from the left side of the computer screen, and springs into the spotlight center stage.

At his juncture, the image of a cash register springs to mind - at which point - a glorious sound sings out.

Ka-ching!
