Ryan Reynolds...masturbates to Spanish Soap Operas! Prefers 6 pack of beer, eh?

On the show-biz circuit to promote the "Green Lantern" (released around the country at a theatre near you this week) Ryan Reynolds (sexy flavor of the month) fessed up that he was suspended from a high school in Vancouver (B.C.) for being a naughty cut-up when he was a pimply-faced teen.

But, the penalty - according to the buffed hunk (who sauntered out from behind the curtain in an elegant cream-colored suit teamed with a tasteful chic tie on one top-rated talk-show) - was a plus.

"That's punishment? Staying home from school?" he chuckled to the host, in so many words.

"I just laid back on my bed all day and masturbated to Spanish soap operas!"

Uh-huh!

Those Latino hunks are sure to cause a rise in the old Levis - if that's your cup-of-tea - that is.

Maybe Ryan should hook up with Ricky Martin next time they cross paths on the red carpet, eh?

By the way, Mr. Reynolds appears to have "butched-up" his act a smidgen since the last time I caught one of his insightful (!) interviews on the telly.

Somehow, the outgoing performer came across as less "gay" than he usually does.

His cut muscled bod doesn't hurt his image, for starters.

But, according to the charismatic actor - who triggers whoops and hollers from fans (both female & male) whenever he makes a public appearance (and in movie theatres when he pops up on screen) - he's ready to heave whenever a reporter quizzes him about his awesome abs.

Now that the action-adventure film is in the can and screening around the Nation - and the strenuous work-outs are behind him - the handsome thespian underscores that he pines to loll about on the couch and chug-a-lug about ten beers.

"I'm Canadian, after all," he shrugs, without apology.

Yup!

Us Canucks can party-hearty, alright.

And, kick some butt, when the local hockey team loses big time in a sports match.

By the way, I intend to catch the "Green Lantern" over the weekend (and will post a review in the next few days).

'Til then!

THOR...studly Chris Hemsworth stars! Jay Leno audience squeals with delight!

Tomorrow, when THOR is released across the country, I expect that Chris Hemsworth's star will soar into the stratosphere!

And - If the reaction the actor received Jay Leno 's audience last night is any indication, the studly actor is bound to become the hunk flavor of the month, too!

When Jay dragged out an old clip of the star performing on Australia's version of the entertainment show - Dancing with the Stars - female fans erupted into wild impromptu squeals of delight.

Uh-huh!

When the Aussie shook his tight little butt for the camera - in revealing skin tight slacks (you could have seen a pimple on his ass as plain as day) - it was evident that he was going to give Ricky Martin (appearing in Concert on May 7th) a run for his money!

Personally, I loved his classy distinctive accent when he chatted up Jay on the hot seat.

But, can he act?

When you look that good, who cares!

Needless to say, it is worth noting that Mr. Hemsworth is trained actor, who does not necessarily rely on his looks to propel his career forward in fickle Hollywood.

In fact, his resume boasts that he actually studied the performoing Arts at the  "American Dialect at Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors" in Sydney Australia.

Currently, he is lensing "The Avengers".

Past credits are nothing to sniff at and include Star Trek and the Perfect Getaway.

Thor should be his break into more commercial spot-light-grabbing starring featured roles if he plays his cards right!

In a nutshell, Thor is an action adventure flick about a powerful arrogant warrior, who is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth (God forbid!) where he soon becomes one of their fiercest defenders.

Hooked already, how 'bout you?

Chances are the the big-budget fantasy venture will be fairly entertaining with a loft of delicious visuals since Director Kenneth Branagh was at the helm of this much-anticipated project.

The project is also boosted up by that fact is was written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.

Of course, if you've been tuning in to the late-night talk0-show circuit, you're keenly aware of the fact the film also stars Academy-Award-Winning actors Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman (fresh off of the Oscar-winning project Black Swan).

Undoubtedly, once the flick splashes across the wide-screen at Theatres tomorrow, ticket-holders and film buffs alike will be swept up and enthralled as the action unfolds from the get-go.

See 'ya there!

Russell Crowe...The Next Three days a hit! Intense action thriller!

It was a toss up between  attending a Los Angeles Westside screening of "The Kids are Alright" at the Landmark Theatre (where Annette Bening was slated to appear at a much-anticipated Q &A Session afterward) or take in a sneak preview of Russell Crowe's newest feature flick "The Next Three Days".

The action-thriller starring Crowe was not only the most popular choice - but, obviously - the hottest ticket in town last night.

In fact, a raucous crowd of ecstatic fans braved a nasty night chill, to stand in line in hopes of securing a coveted seat (with no guarantee they'd be ushered inside or have the opportunity to drink up the mesmorizing - sometimes gritty - images about to splash across the wide screen).

Meanwhile, inside - the event (sponsored by KROQ rock and hosted by AMC Theatres) was packed to the rafters an hour before the feature was slated to commence.

And, the security was tight!

For starters, a posse of security guards - out-fitted in ubiquitous impeccably-tailored black suits - frisked the startled guests for cell phones - to ensure that no unauthorized clips would slip out onto the Internet before the auspicious premiere date.

In sum - "The Next Three Days" - is a taut action-thriller which starts off innocently enough.

Shortly after the audience is introduced to the main characters, the plot jolts to life, in a realistic believable fashion (much to its credit).

Suddenly, Crowe - who portrays a community college teacher - is plunged into a real-life drama when his wife is unexpectedly charged and convicted with murdering her boss.

After the legal process is exhausted, Crowe's character is forced to take the law into his own hands, with awesome results!

The big-budget studio offering is a film for the intelligent filmgoer, for sure.

But, manages to treat regular down-to-earth folks to a roller-coaster-rides of thrills and chills not soon to be forgotten by any discerning film buff.

Crowe is at the top of his game here in a role that not only challenges - but manages - to uplift and inspire.

Indeed!

When a common man is forced to fight the legal system - and risk all against the odds - the audience (no matter how moralistic or law-abiding) is inclined to root from below the flood-lights and egg him on to victory come-hell-or-high-water!

More popcorn, please!

Batman 3...Tom Hardy jumps onboard! What part will he tackle?

Batman 3

Hardy rumors abound!

Apparently, Christopher Nolan has been keeping his cards close to the chest, in respect to casting on the upcoming Batman 3 project.

News has leaked out, however, that Tom Hardy (directed by Nolan in Inception) has been hired on to play a major role in the successful comic strip franchise.

But, which character will the handsome actor take on?

Nolan's not uttering a word!

A Batman sidekick, perhaps?

Others are speculating differently.

A nasty - in-your-face - unscrupulous villain!

Inside sources are playing a cat-and-mouse game in the high-stakes realms of Tinsel Town.

It's being hinted that Hardy may take on the challenging task of portraying either the Riddler, the Penguin (naw!), or Killer Croc.

News at 11!

The Expendables...big, loud, ballsy! Cliche waste of celluloid!

The credits were smart and slick, and a dynamic score built up a helluva-lot of suspense in the opening scenes, but once the Expendables began to unravel (!) on the silver screen, it was obvious that a few once-celebrated careers were most definitely (out-of-whack) or on the wane.

In the build up to the World premiere, Sylvester Stallone trotted out his cocky old self on all the high-profile tabloid talk shows, to promote his new bag of celluloid tricks.

With a whimsy of snake-oil-salesman smoke-and-mirror chicanery, the still-attractive hunk, managed to convince TV viewers that it just may be a hoot to travel down memory lane with his paunchy over-the-hill gang of body-builders.

For example, in a sly effort to pack the movie theatres, the aging Lothario actually waxed poetic about his once-masterful action-hero days.

If "The Expendables" is Sly's vision for the future - and the much-ballyhooed return of action! thrills! and adventure! to the genre - then the biz is in trouble!

There were a few commendable bravado moments on screen - indeed - which flashed forward-and-back now-and-then, but most of the pickings were pretty slim.

The flick had a lot of firepower, alright, but it was predictably pre-packaged and Fed-Exed from the special effects team at the studio.

Call it formula flim-flam.

Hollywood Action Hero Film 101.

Even the popcorn was wasted on this doozey; after all, I fell asleep in my comfy theatre seat about twenty minutes into a thin plot that went nowhere fast, man!

If it wasn't for an - overly-loud in-your-face explosion or two - I probably would have slept right thru.

In fact, that was probably part of Sly's failing here.

There was too much emphasis on visuals and smash-ups - and not enough focus - on plot or story or character development and - blah blah blah.

Well, with Rocky, what did 'ya expect?

Stallone must have texted this baby, from one over-the-hill hunk to the next, until the script was finally hammered out eventually piece-by-sorry-piece.

If what Mickey Rourke said was true the other night on Jay Leno - about crafting his own dialogue for his scenes - then he gets the nod for being the one lone talent in a cast of misfits that couldn't act (or fathom) their way out of a paper bag these days.

Oh, with one exception.

Eric Roberts, in a smaller role, stole scenes (that's how good an actor he is).

But, when you get right down to the nitty-gritty, there wasn't much to crow about in that department.

Sure, the Expendables boasted a cast of action-hero heavyweights from an inglorious yesteryear.

Except for Rourke & Roberts, it was all mere fluff, I dare say!

In fact, when Arnold Schwarzenegger strode in at one point in a surprise (?) cameo, he managed to sully his whole career in an acting stint that was so stinko bad that it rates a "Razzy" this year.

And, it just may ruin his bid for President!

As to the action, well, a dash of explosions here - a tense moment or two there - does not an entertaining (or critically-acclaimed) film make.

One astute men's room critic hit the nail on the head after flushing the toilet on his way out the theatre door.

"That didn't make much sense at all, did it?"

Heck no!

Flush twice, it's a long way to the Executive offices.

The Expendables...Sylvester Stallone @ Premiere! Latham, Lundgren, et al @ Planet Hollywood!

Hunks from the past return en masse!

The big summer block-buster which the studio is pushing gang-busters is "The Expendables".

The other night, Mickey Rourke was a guest on Jay Leno, which piqued a lot of fan interest in the project.

Is the much-tattooed underdog going to turn in another stellar performance and knock our jockeys off in the interim?

Sylvester Stallone has been making the rounds joking about the over-the-hill gang he rustled up for the much-anticipated wild ride and smash-'em-up!

"The Expendables"  harkens from a by-gone era of Hollywood  - when pecs and brawn ruled the day - and features the likes of  Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Jason Statham.

Arnold Schwarzegger pulls out all-the-stops in a cameo, too.

'Ya get the picture?

"The Expendables" is slated for wide release on the weekend.

However, there will be a splashy Hollywood-style premiere in Vegas at the Hollywood Planet tonight to  rev up some buzz for the Sylvester Stallone vehicle.

Uh-huh!

Only A-list actors and VIPs will be able to access the screening, but adventurous fans will be permitted to get up-close-and-personal near the red carpet for photo opportunities.

If the sun doesn't burn down in an unbearable sizzle - as it has been of late - I expect I will trot up the Vegas strip to check out the glitzy celebrated goings-on for posterity's sake.

Location:

Strip House and Koi
(Planet Hollywood)

Screening:

5 pm to 7 pm

Later, you old alligator!

Tom Cruise...He's back! Knight & Day quirky thriller that entertains!

Far and wide, fans and critics alike, have been poohing-poohing the notion that Tom Cruise's - "Knight and Day" - will restore his flaggng career and propel him over the top into the glare of the spotlight as a full-fledged A-list star once again.

Actually, from the prospective of  a romantic/thriller/comedy - mixing genres is generally risky business by the way - the quirky little engine that could has succeeded as a fast-paced funny feature with a lot of original material that resonates in the ticket-holder.

Personally, I was surprised at how fresh some of the schtick  was.

Sight gags took fans by surprise, playful moments with dialogue caused the audience to roar, and unexpcted sidesteps jolted folks enough to pull them effectively into the one-note storyline.

Although the script was not Oscar material, it managed to provide a solid framework, so that the actors were able to flesh out meaty characters.

Cameron Diaz is amazing in this movie!

The pretty blond handles drama equally as well as comedy (a requirement here).

Of all her performances, this is the one gem that stretched her creative muscles, to her advantage.

Tom, in some respects, goes backwards in time to roles like Jerry McQuire and Risky Business in a desperate effort to conjure up the ingredients of a persona that once worked well for him on the silver screen.

However, in "Knight and Day", he is adventurous enough to take some risks (which pay off).

I loved Mr. Cruise's performance.

Kudos!

This film - though not totally dark - is a borderline black comedy piece.

In the final analysis, the right (twisted) mindset may be required to fully appreciate this 3 Star film.

From Paris with Love...Travolta outstanding! Terrorist action-thriller an adrenalin rush!

I was skeptical about John Travolta & Jonathan Rhys Myers being paired in the action-adventure thriller:

"From Paris with Love"

In addition, a couple of Travolta's recent performances on screen left me cold.

The remake of - "The Taking of  Pelham 1 2 3" - for instance.

And - when I caught him in drag in the feature-film adaptation of "Hairspray" - my gut reaction?

John, whatever were you thinking!

Although a competent actor - and a big Hollywood gun - on occasion Travolta tends to overact, force a performance, even take leave of his artistic sensibilities now and then.

In contrast, I have generally found  that Jonathan Rhys Myers has a natural style that captivates an audience (The Tudors).

The foreign-born actor is also quite skilled at conveying emotions that reflect what is running through the mind of the character.

In his role as a high-level official  (a spy?) in the employ of the  U.S. Embassy in Paris, a couple of bad acting choices weakened his performance, though.

For some inexplicable reason, the respected actor chose a flat accent that grated on my nerves every time he opened his surly (but pretty) lips.

If I was forced to compare his vocal technique (!) to that of another?

Daffy Duck would spring to mind.

Surprisingly - "From Paris with Love" -  is  a vastly entertining action-adventure drama set in the high stakes labyrinths of the espionage "otherworld".

John Travolta - as a bad-ass undercover agent - is remarkable in this part.

For starters, I was knocked out by the complex character he breathed life into.

In fact, it was difficult to take my focus off of him, so mesmerizing was his acting style.

The dialogue - well-crafted and believable - was handled with ease despite the tricky script.

"From Paris with Love" is not unlike a diabolical puzzle - that once solved - completely satisfies.

To watch John in action - punching, kicking, levelling a posse of terrorists with a state-of-the-art machine-gun in one fell swoop - is a jolting adrenalin rush filmgoers won't soon forget.

If you missed it at the movie theatre - "From Paris with Love"  is currently playing on Pay TV.

Iron Man 2...bang for the buck! Rourke's phenomenal arch villain! Shandling plastic surgery distracting...

Mickey Rourke steals show!

One of the most high-profile star-studded red carpet premieres to date this year (held at the El CapitanTheatre a couple of weeks ago) was the blow out hosted by Iron Man 2.

Obviously, the producers (and studio heads) were keen to the fact they had a blockbuster hit on their hands and went for broke true Hollywood-style.

I reported on the glittering event the following morning.

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/04/iron-man-iipremiere-mickey-rourke.html

Today, I took in an actual screening, alongside hundreds of hyped-up fans at the AMC Theatre in Century City.

The action-adventure thriller didn't disappoint!

Normally, this kind of super-hero flick is not my ball-of-wax, but there is alot to crow about.

For instance, the strong cast turned in well-fleshed-out characterizations during the course of the fast-paced, grossly entertaining, big budget celluloid offering.

With a couple of exceptions, though.

In spite of the fact Gwyneth Paltrow's character was named Pepper - there was little of that spunk - in her performance.

Talk about sleep-walking through a performance!

Unfortunately, Gary Shandling's plastic surgery was do distracting, it was difficult to go beyond and actually zero in on his character (what there was of it).

Joan Rivers relinquishes her title as best example of what can go wrong when a plastic surgeon fu**s up royally!

Mickey Rourke's stand-out stint as an arch villain is nothing short of astounding.

The kid that's been kicked around Hollywood, and back again, rises like a phoenix from the ashes!

Robert Downey Jr.'s acting is surprisingly nuanced - although there is a tendency to fall back on old tricks of the trade - to wow an audience.

Not necessary!

The studio writers were smart to humanize the Iron Man hero, by the way.

Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, and Don Cheadle inhabit their roles keenly.

Scarlett Johannson - like Rourke - just about steals the show (she's so damn good!).

Foruntately, to its credit, the studio didn't stray too far from the main plotline - and muddy up the screen with sub-plots which inexperienced studio execs (with no gift for writing or telling a story) are want to do.

The undisputed star of Iron Man?

Without doubt, the visuals - and eye-popping dazzling special effects - which keep the audience on the edge of their seat on a pretty satisfying roller-coaster ride.

3 Stars!

Travel with Gannon and Wyatt...young adventurers boast show on Discover!

As I half-turned to check out a couple of booths at the Los Angeles Festival of Books over the weekend, I suddenly spied two young boys - all suited up in western-style garb - and leather de rigueur cowboy hats.

Somehow, the image they projected smacked of the Indiana Jones character featured in Steven Spielberg's successful action-adventure series.

The two brothers - Gannon & Wyatt - gazed out from behind a counter in a picturesque tent - where eye-catching publicity shots of their mugs (in captivating locales in the wilds) were inclined to catch the attention of passers-by.

In fact, a few excited teen-age girls were anxious to have one slick poster - beautifully-crafted - autographed by the young male cuties.

When I queried the intriguing duo about their booth, they explained that they had a web site, where they logged day-to-day events of their travels to local, exotic, and foreign lands.

The site is a well-designed entertaining entry into the blogosphere!

Once you land on their web site, a twin-prop airplane, roars across the screen.

Then, an introduction springs to life, with information on the two eager adventurers.

In the tradition of Lewis & Clark, Dr. David Livingstone &  Captain James Cook - "Travels with Gannon and Wyatt" - offers up the Wheeler's detailed journals for interested web cruisers to feast upon.

From Africa to the South Pacific, these twin brothers have traveled to all corners of the globe, their bio goes on to report.

The journals, photographs and videos compiled on those expeditions provide the foundation for an action-packed - fun - educational series they noted would probably be appearing on the Discover Channel in the fall.

Take a gander!

Iron Man 2...premiere! Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson & Sylvester Stallone wow!

The crew were taping down the last edge of the red carpet (to ensure there weren't any nasty spills once the night's glam festivities commenced), fans were gathering in a frenzy at the packed curb on the famed strip, and all mayhem broke loose when Mickey Rourke alighted from a limo.

"Mickey! Over here," the ecstatic fans (who were crushing me at every nerve ending from all sides) cried out.

"Sign," they pleaded (as they flapped publicity stills excitedly in his direction).

The Oscar-nominated star of  - "The Wrestler" - obliged to their great delight.

He swaggered over in dress slacks, a trendy dinner jacket (with alligator lapels?), a white "t", and ubiquitous shades which lent an air of mystery to the largely misunderstood Hollywood persona.

As the film buffs stuck out photographs, he signed 'em with a distinctive flourish, which caused quite a sensation on the street.

In fact, as he approached me, a crush of enthusiastic fans thrust forward unexpectedly, and I nearly ended up tumbling on top of the studly star!

Boy, wouldn't that be something to write home about!

I managed to utter - "Great to see you, Mickey" - before he was led off down the red carpet to the ravenous paparazzi waiting to devour the star in front of the Chinese Theatre.

Instead of perching in the press corps tonight, I staked out a spot at Orange and Hollywood Blvd.

It turned out to be a primo location to catch the interactions between the stars - and the most important guests of the evening - the fans!

And, the nervy throng, didn't waste the golden opportunity.

When Scarlett Johansson was spied exiting her sleek ride the crowd went wild.

Boy, the actress was quite a knock-out!

The thoughtful beauty strode over to sign autographs and floated by me at one point this-close.

Her gown was a sheer whimsical fantasy sculpted out of fabric and fitted to her sexy svelte frame.

The hair was swept off the face - which was a good look for the pretty actress - with dazzling porcelain skin.

The Diamond studs which sparkled in the light - when she turned this way 'n that - were an understated elegant touch.

Sam Rockwell strode over and signed autographs, and was all business, in a tasteful well-tailored suit.

I almost missed Sylvester Stallone who breezed out of his luxury vehicle and straight onto the red carpet.

Damn those well-trained handlers!

In contrast, Hollywood's finest - the men in blue - were quite respectful to the lookie-loo's.

Well, to a point.

One anxious out-of-towner asked a tall handsome cop if he could get Robert Downey Jr. to sign his poster.

"No, sorry. That would be unprofessional," he noted politely.

True!

But, it doesn't hurt to try to twist an arm now and then, though.

One Gwyneth Paltrow fan (a pretty blond female from Australia) went gaga when she spied the statuseque  beauty stroll down the carpet.

"Gwyneth," she hollered.

"Over here!"

Andrian Brody - with slicked back "do" and squeezed into an expensive leather jacket and jeans - smiled in the direction of shouting fans (but kept walking).

"Heh, it's the snoz," one onlooker joked.

For the most part, the stars were chauffeured up in sleek Audi SUV's, which was mighty impressive.

Occasionally, a classy black (or white) Rolls Royce would purr up to the drop-off-point, causing heads to twist-and-turn in anticipation of a star arrival.

Samuel L. Jackson was pretty cool, with signature cap twisted correctly on his skull, underscoring his keen fashion sense.

Hugh Heffner put in an appearance, too, with a bevy of bodacious blond babes in tow.

How does he keep it up - um - keep up?

I understand he'll be celebrating his 80th birthday (just did?).

Gary Shandling looked a bit stuffy, but glad to be invited to the big top.

Was that James Spader I saw kibitzing with fellow actors on the edge of the runway?

At one point, there were so many luminaries in the business zooming up, that it was hard to keep up (or on track)

Occasionally, a stretch limo squealed to a halt, and a pack of thirty-something men would fall into line to  run the gaunlet.

"Who are they?" curious onlookers quizzed.

"Oh, probably the studio execs, agents, public relations staff," I joked.

The hanger's on, I was guffawing to myself.

One of the employees for the studio gave out souvenirs for Iron Man II.

My partners in crime on the strip were envious of the green mechanical man I was gifted with.

I'll prop him up in the windshielf of my SUV - a fond memory of a glittery night on the Hollywood Walk of Fame rubbing shoulders with the little people - who oil the dream factory in the final analysis.

They snap up the tickets, after all!

San Francisco...Ana Ortiz shooting ABC Pilot in streets! Detective show...

If you're strolling around the city streets in downtown San Francisco - like moi - you may be startled to stumble across a film crew shooting scenes for a Hollywood-style TV pilot!

On the five-day shoot, producers intend to capture key location scenes for the Detective drama which is tentatively titled "True Blue".

"Ugly Betty"star Ana Ortiz has been cast in a lead role.

If you're in town, and curious about how a film crew sets up their shots, keep your eyes open when you're in transit in the dowtown area, Twin Peaks, North Beach and the Golden Gate National Recreation area where the ABC production team will be hunkered down in the bustling city streets until the shoot wraps.

Insiders have disclosed that the drama is about a group of homicide detectives who reunite to solve the mysterious murder of a fellow law enforcement officer.

Whether "True Blue" will be picked up by the Network is still up in the air.

I'll keep 'ya posted!

24...Fox action adventure cancelled! Star Keifer Sutherland in accord with decision...

The 24-hour grind - that was Jack Bauer's life - is screeching to a halt!

Fox announced Friday that the highly-rated action-adventure serial will wrap and not return for another season at  the Network.

The last episode will broadcast on May 24th (2010).

Allegedly, Kiefer Sutherlanad was given the option to continue, but he chose to close the show on a "high note".

"This has been the role of a lifetime and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible," Kiefer said in a prepared statement to media outlets chomping at the bit for any juicy tidbit about the fate of the Fox hit.

"The decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon."

Fans of the show were in mourning this weekend.

But, chin up, folks!

If a dynamite script idea for a big-budget features ends up on the written page - and gets the nod from Sutherland - the project may be greenlighted for the silver screen (according to inside sources).

'Til then, Keifer, take a much-needed break!

All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy, after all.

Green Zone...Iraq War about oil. Matt Damon excels in big-budget feature!

When Baghdad fell, and Saddam's statue was symbolically yanked down as the world gazed on, I speculated at the time that the Iraq War was all about oil and power and posturing in the Middle East.

After all, no weapons of mass destruction were ever found within the borders of the troubled Nation.

In fact, I theorized at the time, that the Intel was falsified to justify the night of "awe" and bootstrap Bush's bold-faced ploy to oust Saddam Hussein.

Through various sources, I was able to rustle up information on a number of curious clandestine events, which took place after-the-fact which lent credibility to my arguments.

For example, I was able to determine that one of the Hunt brothers (Ray L. Hunt) - who was later installed on  President Bush's National Security Council - took an overseas trip on a Government jet to Northern Iraq to allegedly start up negotations for oil leases with warring tribes in the region.

Post:  11/13/07

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2007/11/bush-cronyray-l-hunt-signs-secret-pact.html

In a nutshell, that is the basic plotline of Matt Damon's new flick - Green Zone - which was released this past week around the country.

Damon portrays a Chief Marshall in charge of - tracking, locating, and defusing - weapons of mass destruction (referred to here as WMD) based on Intel that has been reviewed and dispatched from headquarters for appropriate military action.

Like "Hurt Locker", the film wastes no time in getting down to the nitty-gritty in the dramatic opening scenes.

Immmediately, filmgoers are confronted with highly-charged explosive attacks on enemy camps in Iraq, which keep 'em rivetted on the edge of their seats.

The dialogue resonates, too; after all, the speculation about WMD and the U.S. Imperalist invasion of Iraq, at times appeared to be lifted from the nightly news.

Where were the weapons?

Damon's character (Chief Miller) - although a man of action - is not inclined to just carry out orders.

When the Intel doesn't pass the smell taste, he's ballsy enough to go beyond the perimeters of his specific mission, and try to make sense of the baffling intrigues that point to a conspiracy and bald-faced cover-up fabricated to hoodwink the American people.

Damon's acting is pretty darn good in this big-budget thriller; in fact, in the role of Miller the popular charistmatic actor rises to the occasion well and underscores that  he's at the height of his creative powers.

The characterization he has fleshed out - is not only credible - but downright convincing.

In sum, the acting stint is an intelligent stand-out performance, that won't be long forgotten (by actors or critics, at least).

As to the elements that give thrust to the movie - the plotline, story devices, crafting of scenes - well, they're pretty much mainstream Hollywood.

Green Zone is entertaining, but nothing earth-shattering this late in the game.

3 stars!

Inglorious Basterds...Star turn-out on red carpet @ Grauman's Chinese!

Inglorious Basterds splashed onscreen with a lot of fanfare at Grauman's Chinese Theatre this past week with stars of the high-profile action adventure (spoof) trotting down the red carpet to give a thumbs up to Quentin Tarantino for his much-anticipated remake of the old classic starring Bo Svenson.

Tarantino began lensing last October after securing Brad Pitt for the lead role.

In spite of the fact the off-the-wall feature is hardly out of the starter's gate, the film won Christopher Waltz the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival when it was first unveiled in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

In one interview, Tarantino confessed he breathed a sigh of relief when the film was in the can.

After all, there was a time when he thought he wouldn't finish his "baby" which took eight years of nurturing to get into production.

Needless to say, Tarantino’s remake of the low-budget 70's action film, is a departure from the original starring Bo Svenson.

"Bastards" has been spelled incorrectly, for starters, thus revealing Tarantino's lack of education.
Maybe that''s why he scripted what he referred to as a - "very basic and simple" - plotline.

With some off-beat wacko touches, obviously.

For example, Aldo Raine (Pitt's character) is portrayed as a hillbilly (part Indian) who knows a lot about war history and Geronimo's original battle plan. Raine (who leads the mission) takes a bunch of Jewish-American soldiers, goes behind the lines, and does an Apache resistance against the Nazis.

"Basterds" just keeps tripping out like that, according to Quentin.

Sounds like a wild ride, eh?

We'll see if it translates to big bucks at the box office!

In the meantime, for a bit of insight into the original Inglorious Bastards, check out my post on a screening that sparked to life a few months ago at the New Beverly Cinema, and the insightful comments uttered up by the Director and star Bo Svenson afterwards in the entertaining Q&A session.

Arnold Schwarzenegger...to appear in Salvation! Terminator 4 stars hot-head Christian Bale...

Yawn!

Thanks to Twitter, Terminator scuttlebutt is off-and-running and setting the stage for a much-anticipated star-studded red-carpet premiere next month.

When the Governator was first approached about appearing in "Salvation" (which stars temperamental actor Christian Bale in the lead role in what amounts to a 4th installment of the successful Terminator franchise) the former pumping iron stud thought the project might interfere with his "day" job, according to wife Maria Shriver by way of clandestine tweet.

And, you surmised by his lacklustre performance in Sacramento of late, that Arnold wasn't wiling away any hours in the office at all, eh?

Naw, he's just an effectual son-of-a-gun!

Anyhoo, the director conjured up a great film scenario when the dilemma reared its ugly head.

In the latest plot twist for the Terminator ("Salvation") Christian Bale's character will uncover the fact that Schwarzenegger's menacing persona is actually a "future" terminator ripe for blowing away.

Through the magical wizardry of leading edge technology in the special effects field, the aging Austrian hunk will grace the silver screen by virtue of old footage from the 1st Terminator movie - albeit - artfully touched up.

The studio vows up and down that no one will be able to fathom the difference.

Yeah, right!

I wonder, though, will filmgoers be treated once again to that eye-popping shot of Schwarzenegger dropping to the earth stark naked in the prime of his manhood?

Fans will have to spring for a ticket to find out.

"Salvation" isn't even going to make it to my DVD list anytime soon, though.

Like Arnold, the ongoing theatrical saga has gotten old and gray, in my estimation.

Not even Geritol could save the franchise!

Liam Neeson..."Taken" a high-action thriller. A bit cliche, but a great ride...

Liam Neeson is a fine actor and in the new release - TAKEN - he doesn't disappoint.

In the super-charged testosterone-packed thriller, Mr. Neeson rises above what is - for the most part an implausible piece of cliched fluff - and turns in a riveting performance that is worth catching.

Plot lines about foreign mobsters (in this instance, from Albania) trafficking in drugs and the "slave trade" (prostitution) have been amply mined in the past by a posse of filmmakers, some capable - others not.

Here, the high-budget pot-boiler amounts to the "same old same old" in that regard, basically speaking.

But, a few interesting twists have been woven in, and strike gold, making for a solid two hours or so of high voltage suspense.

Indeed, by the time Neeson has completed his mission, the body count stands at about thirty, half of Paris appears to have been demolished, and the adrenalin-rush has just about taxed everyone in the captivated audience.

When Neeson's daughter travels overseas with a friend to the romantic City Of Lights, the innocent two-some are kidnapped and offered up to the highest bidder by a nefarious call-girl ring of International proportions.

Uh-huh, preposterous!

Fortunately, Neeson's character was a former Government "employee".

"I was a preventer," he explains to his naive 19-year old daughter in the opening scenes of the celluloid offering just released around the country by studio biggie, 20th Century Fox.

Once his daughter has been snatched, he draws on his espionage - and me-thinks - anti-terrorist skills to track the thugs down, rescue his precious, and exact a little cowboy justice.

If you're into cars squealing rubber and careening around hair-spin turns, awesome multi-vehicle crash-ups, heart-pounding chases, and keen on rooting for professional killers engaged in no-holds-barred body combat, then this gem is for you.

Although there is a bit of picturesque scenery tossed in for good measure - chances are - filmgoers will be so intensely focused on Liam's character and the fast-paced storyline - that it will end up a pretty blur in the background.

Budget-minded folks can screen "Taken" for six bucks at a matinee at 12 noon at AMC Theatres.

That leaves enough cash left over to splurge on some popcorn and soft drinks to munch on as Liam chews up the screen in front of you non-stop.
