Afghanistan in 4 Frames...embedded photojournalists capture soldiers at ease! Thought-provoking San Francisco Exhibit!

Quiet intimate moments captured on film!

At the height of the War in the Afghanistan conflict, heart-wrenching images flooded the airwaves daily on the evening news.

Now, thought-provoking stills of the war-torn country– at least eighty in number – are on exhibit in the lower level of City Hall in downtown San Francisco.

Thanks to funding provided by the Art Commission, the insightful work of four reputable photojournalists (who were embedded with the military forces overseas for five years), provides a golden opportunity for Americans to get an up-close “insider look” at a soldier’s daily routine.

For example, a handful of the intimate photographs capture average soldiers at rest or on-the-ready for action.

The photographers – Lynsey Addario, Teru Kuwayama, James Lee and Eros Hoagland – actually risked their lives chronicling the (at-times) disturbing shots of Afghans caught in the crossfire, too.

James Lee, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, traveled near the Pakistan border with the Afghan National Security Forces and was able to snap a color photo essay (titled "Counter Narratives") that offers up a rare view of a military group preparing to seize power once the Allies withdraw.

Light-hearted photographs – one features a bird perched on the beret of a young soldier – are also included in the comprehensive collection.

Teru Kuwayama is the lone artist included in the riveting display who facilitated the use of film rather than digital technology for practical reasons.

According to Kuwayama – the equipment was less obtrusive and allowed for easier maneuvering and better access in regions where fragile battery-operated cameras weren’t feasible.

Pulitzer prize-winner – Lynsey Addario – focused her lens on female Marines performing routine duties in the community ("Women at War") where the soldiers reached out to women and children in ways their male counterparts in uniform could not.

A series of stills – "Out of the Line of Fire" – captured female forces shaving their legs, grooming their hair, and relaxing off-duty in unlikely perches in the most volatile-of-regions near the enemy lines.

Afghanistan in 4 Frames is on display through May 13th at San Francisco City Hall (in the lower level).

WikiLeaks...Lady Gaga and a vacuum triggered War Document release!

Harsh criticisms of Barack Obama - on the issue of the Wiki-leaks - are continuing to spark alot of  heated discussion around the country.

And, there is a bizarre musical twist in the mix, too.

For starters, Obama's staunchest opponents are arguing that by staying mum in recent months, the Commander-in-Chief triggered a vacuum which warranted a release of the gory details in what is being referred to as the "War Document".

Some see the blow-out as an opportunity for the President to "come clean" and remind Americans why U.S. troops are in Afghanistan.

In fact, critics have taken the position that it is high time the White House gave a full assessment.

"If a military man of General Prateus's stature is on the ground there, our presence in the war-torn country is obviously important."

Is the Government holding back?

One female correspondent noted that she has perused the highly-volatile paperwork and categorizes it
as a "War Novel".

"There are intrigues about Pakistan, documents that establish previously unreported civilian deaths, and a multitude of human atrocities," that shed new light on aspects of the war heretofore unknown.

The general consensus is that the President should be angry about the "leaks".

But, at what cost?

Just minutes ago, the President gave a speech in which he appeared to be downplaying the severity of the revelations offered up in the leaked documents.

"Nothing new," appeared to be the cry of the day.

A flimsy attempt to reassure the public?

Of course, his critics jumped on the deceitful ploy.

Yes, we've known about Pakistan and ties with the Taliban - but how extensive was it?

And, how many plots were made against Americans and Afghan officials, some are pining to know.

New leaks suggest that Pakistan intelligence services have  been working with the Taliban.

The mere thought of it, angers many, in view of the 7.5 billion in aid just proposed for Pakistan.

Obama stressed in a speech today that the White House was not writing a blank check, though.

Strings are definitely attached, without doubt.

As to the leaks?

Authorities have been able to determine that a young Private was the culprit.

Under the "guise" of listening to Lady Gaga's hit "Telephone" on the army base, the naive Officer (with high-security clearance) downloaded the files right under his superior's nose and high-tech security to boot!

Private Bradley Manning - a US army intelligence analyst, has been charged with leaking a highly classified video of American forces killing unarmed civilians in Baghdad and secret diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks.

The video - titled Collateral Murder - graphically shows an air strike which killed a dozen people.

In another segment, soliders were caught on camera  laughing at the dead.

Manning got caught after boasting to a fellow hacker that he passed on the classified documents to the public sector through the Wiki-Leaks site.

One question, Private Manning.

Why not "Poker Face"?

General McChrystal...retiring from military! News alert!

On the heels of a forced "resigntion" last week (some blatantly allege it was a veiled "firing") General McChrystal - once top dawg handling military maneuvers in Afghanistan - has informed the White House of his intention to retire from the forces.

Inside sources note that the General has not lodged his retirement papers, yet, but intends to do soon.

The future for the General?

Well, he could always hire himself out (everyone prostitutes themselves these days in one form or another) with one of the Hollywood studios as a Military consultant for War films, Movies of the week on Terrrism,  and the like.

What about the Rollling Stone article?

Heck, Tinseltown will welcome him with open arms; after all, a juicy candal is often the scurrious prequisite for getting a foot in the door!

There's no life like it!

General McChrystal...a slippery slope stabilizes for President Obama!

A boner of contention!

He sprinted on seven-mile stretches along the rugged terrain at the crack of dawn, was a 4-star General who savored a great  camaraderie with his fellow soldiers up-and-down the chain of command) - and quite possibly - ate nails for breakfast.

And, at the height of his brillliant military career, stumbled.

Uh-huh.

General McChrystal was given (allowed to hand-deliver) his walking papers.

Background Story

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/06/general-mcchrystalgets-sack-according.html

In the  infamous Rolling Stone interview at the aforementioned link, one of McChrystal's crusty chronies was heard to lament that the General was never given the President's undivided attention.

"He (Barack Obama) didn't even fu**king know who his top dawg in Afghanistan was," barked out the Officer in so many words.

The boss was pissed.

The comments didn't fall on deaf ears, though.

When the General was "summoned" to the White House, a spokesperson underscored that the top honcho in charge of Afghanistan would be getting Obama's "undivided attention".

Ironic that!

The meeting he longed for was his last.

Though tough to make, the decision to let McChrystal go ended up being best for the country, the troops overseas, and the Afghanistan war.

In a nutshell, President Barack Obama triggered - and in the aftermath - re-established civilian control over the military.

On the heels of the General's resignation, the President noted for the record that his decision to relieve McChyrstal of his duties was not due to any disagreement in policy or out of any sense of personal insult.

It all boiled down to a code of conduct unbefitting an officer.

I happen to be one of those inquiring individuals who believes that the General and his men made a deliberate effort to engage the Rolling Stone writer - and thereafter - hurled the insults knowing full well they'd be published.

Why?

To cast dissent, stir up the stakes, you name it.

Interestingly, on Larry King Live last night, the insightful writer was asked on-camera via satellite if they (the General and his jarhead buddies) knew it was coming.

The journalist paused longer than usual, reflected for a moment, then told Larry he had warned them there might be a couple of rough days ahead.

But, I had another take on Larry's question.

Did he mean did they know what the reaction would be or that the article he was penning was about to perform a full-frontal lobotomy on these yahoos?

Only Larry King has the answer to that question.

In my mind, because General MChrystal and his  gung-ho grunts courted the reporter, they ended up getting their just desserts.

The big swinging dick stopped here.

I never promised you a Rose Garden!

Barack Obama...youthful & stylish in Black Leather jacket overseas!

Barack's inate fashion sense goes way back!

Sarah Palin should take a cue from the President, Barack Obama, who is currently on a tour overseas in the middle East.

The charistmatic 44th President (& Command-in-Chief) charged on stage at a military base today to boost the morale of the troops in a chic black leather jacket that lended a youthful air to the image of the country's head honcho (beleaguered lately over the Health Insurance Reform Bill signed into law last week amid vehement opposition by the Republicans).

In contrast to the jacket the Prez cut a stylish swath in, Sarah Palin's - festooned with all-manner-of tacky zips and snaps - was outlandishly "out-of-place" at a conservative tea party rally where image is of the utmost importance to American voters.

Osama bin Laden...ass backwards terrorist! Screws loose loser needs therapy...

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence (and/or common sense) must have done a double-take this morning if they caught sight of the report on Osama bin Laden and his latest absurd smoke-screen tactics!
Allegedly, Mr. Laden (!) switched gears this past week, in a sinister bold-faced effort to stab Americans in the heart, when he announced to a stunned world that the U.S.(and a handful of her allies) were responsible for global warming.

"The only way to prevent disaster is to boycott U.S. goods and stop using the dollar," the old goat herder hissed from his palatial digs in the impoverished environs of the outer perimeters of an unidentified war-torn nation.

The mad-man not only underscored what an idiot he is, but stressed the lengths he and his merry band of bombers will go, to justify their flimsy reasons for blowing up the Twin Towers (911).

For starters, his wild notion that killing innocent folks is okay willy-nilly on behalf of a convoluted cause (yet to be determined ) underscored what an idiot monster he truly is.

Now, it appears that he is under the mistaken immpression that citing climate change will somehow justify a full frontal attack on the U.S.

I guess that a slow death by global warming is more sinister (and heinous) a crime than one where the individual gets blown up instantaneously and feels no "pain" or suffers any consequence in the immediate aftermath.

In retrospect, it appears that Osama bin Laden is keenly aware that his 911 actions were totally unacceptable in a civilized society (where murder is just that: murder) - and for good reason - is  now back-paddling to find ways to justify the cold-blooded killings which set the global community on fire.

Does Osama honestly expect us to believe that he cares one iota about global warming?

Or, that he would honestly boycott the purchase of  U.S. weapons, to force America's hand  in respect to the green house effect complained of now?

Osama has been in the desert too long, and his brain has turned  to mush, as a consequence.

Bottom line, if the truth be known, Osama and his cohorts are just  plain jealous of North Americans and their consumer lifestyle.

It's not America's fault that Osama bin Laden was born ugly, in a skin he's prefer to be of the silky-white kind  (and into a culture - and homeland - which few find appealing in the global scheme of things).

Osama bin Laden is facing centuries-old bad karma.

He should pack it  in and call it a day; otherwise, they'll continue to be numbered.

Osama bin Laden is welcome to conjure up all the sorry excuses he wants to try to convince a disbelieving world that he actually cares about human-kind (or the environment).

The fool must think Americans have stupid written all over their foreheads.

Not!

Terrorist watch list! On it? TSC says "no"...

Are you on the terrorist watch list?

If so, you may never know, because the list is classified.

The top-secret list of who's who in the shadowy world of terrorism is growing, too.

The Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) evaluates up to 1200 new pieces of data daily that are related to current records on file (which includes file additions, corrections, modifications, deletions, and so forth and so on).

In addition, there is a mountain of information on spanking new entries submitted from Law Enforcement personnel around the Nation.

Although government officials won't specify the grounds for inclusion on the list, the powers-that-be underscore, a standard is applied.

"There must be reasonable suspicion," one gate-keeper noted for the record.

By the way, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

If any U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or student suspects they are on the list - and likewise anxious to establish that fact - there individual make seek recourse.

People listed without provocation may submit a request through the Traveler Redress Inquiry Program website to enlighten them about their status..

Obviously, Americans are paranoid.

A TSC spokesperson noted that the vast majority of Americans who inquire usually aren't on the watch list.

But, after they launch a request, you can bet your sweet bipp they will be.

Just joking!

Touchy counsel at the Civil Liberties Union accuse the agency (TSC) of placing too many people under close scrutiny on flimsy grounds.

Critics also argue that the watch list puts the focus elsewhere and diverts manpower away from potential threats that are real and dangerous.

In response, the TSC doesn't mince words, when elucidating their thoughts on the terrorist terrain here and abroad.

"It helps combat terrorism, period."

Spy Plane...Sentinel the "Beast of Kandahar! Stealth aircraft remotely controlled...

Is this the "Beast of Kandahar"?

The wingspan, length, engine type - in fact, all relevant details about the RQ-170 Sentinel - are unknown (beyond the ultra top-secret hangars where they are stored somewhere between the Tonopah Test Range and Creech Air Force Base in Nevada).

But, one thing is certain.

The remotely-piloted spy plane (nick-named the "Beast of Kandahar") is cut-out for its job as a stealth fighter jet!

The RQ-170 Sentinel - as it is officially known in military circles - is the latest hi-tec aircraft developed for reconnaissance surveillance to support combat forces.

Unlike the propeller-drive unmanned aerial systems installed in the Predator and Reaper, the Sentinel has a jet-powered platform, according to insiders.

Andy Bourland - Chief spokesperson for the Air Force Press - was pretty mum when it came to disclosing details about the aircraft and downright reticent about releasing a publicity still or two ( for obvious reasons).

The information that was offered up was pretty dry in the final analysis.

"The RQ-170 Sentinel, a low observable UAS, was built by Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs. The fielding of the RQ-170 aligns with Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates' request for increased intelligence surveillance and intellligence support to the Combatant Commanders and Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz's vision for an increased reliance on unmanned aircraft," a statement from the office of Mr. Bourland summed up.

According to informed sources, the "Beast" has been flying classified  missions over Afghanistan, and has only been photographed twice.

A trade journal (Aviation Week & Space Technology) has described the novel spy plane as a "tailless flying wing" with a wingspan similar to that of the rear propeller-driven MQ-9 Reaper (wingspan 66 feet).

Sources close to the upper echelon have whispered that the Sentinel appears to be powered by a single jet engine so that it can fly at high altitudes and monitor large areas.

The "Beast" is likened to a scaled-down version of the B-52 Spirit Bomber which can effectively evade radar detection.

John Pike (a director @  http://www.globalsecurity.org/) speculated that it would make sense for the Sentinel to use persistent surveillance like the predator does out-of-sight and high above its targets below at wider ranges.

Due to its unique capabilities - ultimately - the Sentinel may be facilitated as a regional surveilance system to cover terrorists activities across a far-reaching terrrain which may include countries such as Yemen, Somalia, Iran, and Pakistan.

Blackwater...involved in sneak raids in Afghanistan & Iraq! Denial! Denial! Denial!

CIA thick in intrigues!

On Thursday, the New York Times published a report on their website alleging that Blackwater security guards were actively involved in clandestine CIA raids in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A representative at the company - now professionally known in industry circles as Xe Services - stated for the record that Blackwater was never under contracct with the CIA or Special Forces in those worn-torn countries.

"Any allegation to the contrary would be false," Mark Corallo asserted in no uncertain terms on behalf of Xe Services.

The key words are "under contract".

It is quite possible that Blackwater security guards were enlisted on the sly on a crisis-by-crisis basis.

In fact, one news organization was quick to point out that the roles and responsibilities of security officers and special forces often became blurred (or shifted into higher gear) in the battlefield setting at a moment's notice out of necessity.

It is alleged that Blackwater security officers were drawn in by the powers-that-be to take advantage of their high-level skills and their familiarity with the "territory".

The CIA has remained mum to date on the issue.

Over the past year or so - I reported on a couple of  Blackwater incidents (currently under investigation) - which resulted in the deaths of innocent citizens in the streets of Iraq.

In view of the foregoing, it's obvious why  Blackwater owners changed their company name to Xe Services.

To distance themselves from their prior image - as cold-blooded mercenaries -  of course!

Lions for Lambs...much ado about nothing. Movie review!

With much anticipation, I awaited the screening of the feature film, "Lions for Lambs"; after all, the buzz prior to its slated release hinted that it would be the cinematic event of the year.

After elbowing my way through the crush of excited filmgoers at Mann's Chinese Theatre, I slipped into my seat anxious for the silver screen to light up.

Within the first ten minutes, my hopes plummeted.

The opening scenes were awkward, talky, and amateurish in style.

For starters - the story devices the producers facilitated to weave three tales - failed to conjure up any intrigue, drama, or thrills.

Political potboiler?

Pooh!

The scripted messages embedded in this high-budget fiasco failed to strike a chord, too.

Meryl Streep plays a journalist invited to a Senator's office (Tom Cruise) for a hush-hush meeting to discuss one-on-one a bold-faced strike on Afghanistan.

The aim of the military action, according to the polished politician (outfitted in a striking starched-white neatly-pressed dress shirt and well-fitting designer suit) is to alter the unsavory image of the political machine on watch in Washington - and ultimately - restore confidence and faith to the American people.

The scenes set in the Senator's office have been crafted - if you can call it that - to throw out arguments in support of the "war".

Frankly, the scenario is not plausible.

For example - Streep's character is invited to Irving's lair with the promise of an exclusive on looming strike-action hatched by the powers-that-be in Washington - which they surmise will give the military leverage, cure all ills, and put America back on track as a superpower.

In the process, Irving boldly asserts that the sagging image of the United States, will summarily be rehabilitated on the world stage.

In fact - Cruise's character laments at one juncture - that he'll do "whatever it takes" for the scheme to work.

For starters, it's highly unlikely that a journalist would be invited to a clandestine meeting of this nature, at a Senator's office. It further stretches one's credulity to imagine that any politician would ever confide in a reporter about such highly-sensitive military maneuvers.

More startling - the filmgoer is expected to believe a professional reporter would compromise their journalist ethics - and turn in a news item guided by the hand of a politician with unsavory motives.

Another problem at issue is Cruise.

In this movie, I imagine the script called for the Irving character to be something of a sleazy snake-oil-salesman, pitching tough sells, to be passed on to the unsuspecting American public through the media.

Cruise's acting - or lack of it - poses a dilemma.

He postures, struts, and leans over a desk - at one point the finnicky actor crisply stretches the suit jacket over the back of a chair - but all the mannerisms and affectations are at a loss to conceal the fact he lacks the acting chops and the depth and maturity to pull the characterization off.

In this role, he mirrors all his other shallow, on-camera stints.

When he's all bluster and externalized gestures - Cruise should be internalizing and emoting - from the inside out.

He's unconvincing.

A handful of actors on the A-roster list would have sunk their teeth into this role and turned out a multi-faceted performance worthy of mention come Oscar-time.

When Streep notes to her boss - "he's trying to lubricate his way into the white house" - it's a bold-faced reference to the character's slickness.

Well, there needs to be some spit and shove to make it happen.

By the way, the message the screenwriter has him spinning is lame and convoluted.

Someone's propaganda, but who's pointing fingers?

The speeches about Americans - the Iraq war and how it's perceived - fall flat.

What a puppet show.

The at-times cliche material has been well-travelled and rings hollow - and so - amounts to much ado about nothing in the final analysis.

In fact, when Streep responds in confusion - and hesitates at a loss for words in one scene - the filmgoer has to seriously wonder if that is her actual response for real.

Undoubtedly, Ms. Streep has a clue this drivel will not fly in the theatres.

When Streep steps outside to hail a cab there is a telling ironic moment.

The vehicle says "Yellow Cab" on the side-door; however, it's actually painted orange and black.

This one image says it all.

"Lions for Lambs" claims to be one thing, but is actually something else.

If you just open your eyes - and steer clear of the smoke and mirrors - you won't be fooled.

See "Lions for Lambs" for what it is - a vehicle for Redford to expound his political views - and play the wise old owl.

Yeah, the Oscar-winning Director is under the mistaken impression, that he's shedding light in dark corners where Americans have not boldly ventured before.

Does he think filmgoers are stupid?

In his role as a Professor of Political Science, his screen time amounts to about forty minutes of precious celluloid - boring, stagy moments - which intercut back and forth between other two plot lines.

During the duration, his character attempts to cast a spell on a young student, with the ultimate aim of convincing the foggy-headed lad to stick it out in his Political Science class.

Redford should have relaxed into this role like a comfortable old shoe.

The slow pacing of his dialogue, the exacting - and what I expect he believes are thoughtful, meaningful pauses - somehow don't work, however.

At one point, the student says, "if you can't do..."

Yeah, we know, teach!

All flawed stale moments.

Notwithstanding, the interaction between the characters is dumb, and pointless.

When Professor Malley finally gets up out of the chair he's been glued to and gestures to a photograph of himself among fellow classmates from a bygone era - it's glaringly obvious that the ghostly image has been pasted on.

Gosh, what a bad patch job.

It's the details that hint at what a push-over Redford thought the audience would be.

Just hit 'em with some fast talk about the war - throw in a couple of high-profile stars - and get 'em all stirred up with some thought-provoking promotional teasers.

Yeah, we'll get 'em into the theatres.

In sum, it's a weak, silly excuse for a feature film.

Redford's assumption that his musings were the best take on the war (worthy of a big-screen foray into the subject matter) was a a costly mistake - not only for him as a director at the helm - but for the studio who pumped millions into this piece of crap.

Curiously - due to his own inept staging of the scenes - the audience ends up scrutinizing his face more closely.

Then, it dawns on the ticket-holder, just how old Redford's gotten and how out-of-touch he is with the very idea of filmmaking.

How could this maverick who started up Sundance - and provided a dynamic forum for innovate young filmmakers on the leading edge of the cinema - end up so bogged down in his own indulgent excesses?

Granted - some of the military scenes in the third sub-plot are brimming with action and backed up with good acting, intense combat, and horrific special effects.

So, the trip to the theatre is not all lost.

Yeah, just settle back for the pyrotechnics and forget about the - er - message!

In these sequences, there is perverse entertainment value, if you like war movies.

Also, one scene in which Streep's character and her boss have it out - is a stand-out - theatrically-speaking.

Forget about the unreal dialogue their spouting, though; just focus on the amazing characterizations both are crafting before your eyes with professional ease.

There's something to marvel at.

Then - poof - the film abruptly ends without a solution!

Does Redford think it's a job well done?

In sum, I'd surmise he's under the mistaken impression that he's spun out some thought-provoking ideas, put out an ominous spin on the Iraq War worth fathoming - and in the process - effectively tossed into filmgoers' laps puzzle pieces to solidly snap together.

Got the message?

The promos say "Lions for Lambs" is a wake up call for America.

The audience needed one, they were falling asleep in the theatre.

"Lions for Lambs" didn't go out with a roar, it departed with a whimper!
