Lady Gaga...mentor advice ignored by American Idol hopefuls! 3 Contestans compete now!

As I channel-surfed last night, I suddenly caught sight of a slightly homogenized (no pun intended, honest!) Lady Gaga making a star turn on American Idol as a mentor for the show’s latest hot-to-trot contestants.

The segment was so engaging that I stuck around, ‘til the final curtain fell, and the credits rolled.

The Pop Diva's stab at mentoring on American Idol was vastly entertaining!

For those of you unfamiliar with the feature, the producers for the top-rated entertainment show regularly invite a high-profile performer to coach a handful of the finalists behind-the-scenes, as they gear up for the final stretch of the competition.

Surprisingly, the Pop Diva turned out to be quite an effective coach, provided the talent had the capacity (and intelligence) to take heed of the seasoned pro’s advice that is.

An old phrase springs to mind in this instant case:

“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink!
For example, when I first tuned in, a pretty lounge-style singer was in the throes of botching a tune because she was missing the whole essence of the song.

When Lady Gaga offered up a suggestion with the specific aim of rustling up a little sizzle to the contestant’s otherwise dull performance she balked.

For example, the Pop Diva instructed the young lady to imagine that she was evil when she belted out her rendition of a well-known hit.

Instead of playing with the idea, and applying it, the contestant underscored how inexperienced she truly was by virtue of her childish remarks.

“Oh, I’m not evil. So, I can’t be that,” she awkwardly responded, or something to that effect.

Subsequently, the young songbird found it a difficult challenge to utilize the novel tool offered up, or even give it a chance and run with it.

“Imagining” she was an evil seductress, for starters, may have helped the aspiring recording artist muster up a sexier gutsier quality to her voice which may have drummed up the right emotions - and thus - set her on the track to success.

In a nutshell - she didn’t get “it” - or the indescribable something most artists strive to attain.

The Hollywood hopeful’s failure to grasp the concept cinched it for me.

The finalist would be a lousy actress from the get-go, in my estimation, you betcha!

Can you imagine an actor (or performer) without any imagination to draw on?

In contrast, a second artist took the advice given, and soared to the top of the heap as a result.

Unfortunately, he suffered during his live stage performance because of his lack of experience, which stuck out like a sore thumb.

For example, when he first appeared in the rehearsal hall before the mentors, his version of the olden-goldien hit - "Love Potion No. 9" - was pretty wimpy.

Boring, too.

If I was the songwriter, as punishment for butchering my tune, I would have strung him up by the balls (provided he had some, of course) and belted out 100 Manilow tunes.

It was obvious the green vocalist didn’t even take the time to dissect the lyrics, or try to fathom the heartbeat of the catchy pop winner (which happened to be one of my own favorites).

Once the advice was given, though, he whipped up a stage performance that was light years ahead of the one he originally conjured up on his own.

In a nutshell?

The kid confirmed on-camera that he had no interpretative skills – and most certainly – lacked the talent to compose his own original material or mess-around with someone else’s in a recording studio.

In addition, he made a mistake common to inexperienced performers, at the early stages of their careers.
For example, he struck a pose on stage, tore into the song, and knocked them dead right out of the gate.

Unfortunately, he “killed” a good thing when he failed to leave them begging for more.

"Love Potion 9 " impacted and excited the audience at first, then mid-way dropped off in the wow department when it dragged on – and on – and on.

Was that over-the-top highly-stylized piece ever going to end?

Maybe he's related to the director of Inland Empire?

When fans start glancing at their watches, you know the artist is in trouble.

In a parting shot, I would like to make a comment to smarty pants (Scottie) too.

The silly digs you made about Lady Gaga emphasized what a hick you truly are!

You don’t have "Lady Gagas" where you're from?

Have you never heard of entertainment gadgets such as the radio, CD player, or the ubiquitous old boob tube gracing every romper room across the country?

Have you been hiding under a rock all your life?

Talk about arrogance and an overblown sense of self importance.

Get real, kid!

Michael Phelps...4th place! Jynxed @ U.S. National Championships!

Ever since Lochte cruised passed Michale Phelps this mid-week at the U.S. National Championships, it spelled trouble for the Gold Medalist.

Of an other-worldly kind perhap?

Has Phelps been jinxed by good gal and rival Ryan Lochte?

A fourth place for the 200 meter backstroke today was comparable to standing still in the proverbial water  for the Champ, and left quite a few shaking their heads in disbelief come the end of the race.

When a reporter primarily focused on Lochte poolside mid-week, and practically ignored Phelps, it jarred the sensibilities.

And, signalled that perhaps the spotlight was shifting its focus at the U.S. National Championships this year.

After all, the hype and the hoopla has usually intensely focused on Golden Boy Phelps.

The first big loss to Lochte (Ryan placed 1st & Michael a 2nd) underscored that it just may be a slow downhill slump from there for the Olympic Gold Medalist (Phelps).

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/08/michael-phelpsdragged-in-200-medley-at.html

The 200 meter backstroke competition proved to be the clincher earlier today.

Ryan Lockte swan to glory for a first place showing (1:55.58) to rack up a stellar credit that turned out to be 2nd-fastest placement in the world this year.

The strong breakout lead against 2nd finisher (Aaron Peirsol) and 3rd placement swimmer (Tyler Clary) said it all.

In his prime, Lockte's star is on the rise in the swim world, without doubt.

Michael Phelps was not just a big disappointment, but a downright headshaker, when he struggled to place in the 4th spot.

Lockte perceived the exciting scenario this way.
"I knew I had to get out fast and hold on for dear life."

"Those last 50 yards I could see that everyone was coming and thought:

"This is going to be bad."

Meanwhile, Peirsol was pumped up over Lockte's strategy.

"He swam that race like you're supposed to swim it," Peirsol said.

"He basically called our bluff. I didn't even see him until the second turn, and by then I was too far back to catch up."

Meanwile, Michael - in spite of his devastatingly poor performance, remained cool-headed as he assessed the swim in the aftermath.

"I don't ever want to do that ever again," Phelps said.

I hope not, Michael.

It was painful to watch from this perch, let me tell 'ya.

In spite of the three big wins (some record-breakers) the Beijing King  acknowledged that he was disappointed with his performances.

"I was setting myself up for this," Phelps said.

"I'm only going to be happy if I'm perfect. If I'm not perfect, I'm going to be hard on myself."

Phelps said he would have to re-establish his training regimen.

Promises! Promises! Promises!

Michael Phelps...Golden Boy nabs 100 fly in record time @ U.S.Championships! Glide to 50th win!

Michael Phelps - still the most exciting swim athlete to keep an eye on in this or any other relevant swim competition now or in the future - glided to an easy powerful win in the 100 meter Butterfly on Thursday at the U.S. Championships in tony Irvine (CA).

The multi-Olympic champion stroked to the finish line in excellent form - and a heady victory - to nab his 50th United States National swimming title.

Earlier in the week, in spite of two exciting wins (200 meter freestyle & 200 meter Butterfly), Phelps grumbled about his physical performance (the kid wasn't too happy about his timing, either) but was all smiles today as he spun himself up out of the pool with a satisfied look on his handsome chiselled face.

200 Meter Butterfly

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/08/michael-phelpswins-butterfly.html

There was much to be overjoyed about (fans were ecstatic) after having shaved off a second of the previous world best time of 51.70 set by Evgeny Korotyshkin at the Russian Nationals in May.

Phelps's time of 50.65 seconds was the fastest in the world this year.

A man of few words, who tends to downplay his performance, the "Golden Boy" of the U.S. Swim circuit managed a few words for the press that signaled he was happy - a smidgent, at least - overall at long last.

"I'm fairly pleased with that," Phelps said.

"That's pretty good for right now. That's the best I've felt."

A bit cocky?

The win gave Phelps his 50th National title, the most all time.

Auburn's Tyler McGill confidently hit the wall behind him in second place with a so-so time of 52.20.

Ohio State's Tim Phillips came in a respectable third with a clock that read at 52.41.

With two races to go in the U.S. Championships in the month ahead, Phelps has turned a stellar page in his swim career on the American scene, for sure.

Without doubt, unpleasant personal missteps he struggled over last year (especially in respect to image) are fading into the past.

Just maybe, there's a product endorsement or two on the horizon, to propel his greatness forward once again.

News at 11.

Michael Phelps...competing @ U.S. Championships in Irvine!

Phelps back in swim of things!

Michael Phelps - one of my favorite subjects - is in the news again.

With this week's U.S. National Championships upcoming, Michael is facing his biggest month of the year.

Sportswriters in the field will probably agree with Michael that the challenge for the gold medalist may be more mental than physical - as he gets ready to dive into the pool again - especially in view of a relatively poor performance in Paris about a month ago.

Critics took pot shots on that occasion, in fact.

"Phelps appeared to struggle in his heats and appeared off form."

When the five-day Nationals start-up today, there will be a lot at stake across the board.

The handsome swimmer's busiest day will be his first, when he competes in two events on Wednesday.

Phelps is scheduled to swim five events in total in Irvine which include the 200-meter freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 fly, 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke.

Just recently the studly athlete acknowledged that it was frustrating not being in tip-top-shape, or where if felt right to be, in the scheme of things.

The advantage to that?

"You know what you need to do to get back and you know what you need to change."

Michael believes that he is fully motivated right now - and hence - hints that he expects to fair well in the week ahead.

There has been some scuttlebutt about Michael's new freestyle stroke which some observers on the sidelines in Paris felt was flawed because both timing and stroke were off.

In spite of that criticism, Phelps is confident that he can actually place well in the event.

Will what Michael suits up in matter?

The swimmers return to textile suits, after all.

Gone are the neck-to-ankle suits made of polyurethane materials that revolutionized the sport (which are now banned).

The suit controversy reached a peak at last year's world championships in Rome when 43 world records were set.

At the start of this year, FINA passed new rules on how much skin could be covered and what fabrics could be used.

Male swimmers are only allowed to wear waist-to-knee "jammers," while women must wear shoulder-to-knee suits made of textile materials only.

Michael need not worry.

He could charm the Officials into allowing him to sport his birthday suit.

And fans would be cheering ringside, nonetheless!

Hip Hop World Championships...$20,000.00 prize! Talented dancers flow into Vegas...

At least 2000 hip-hop artists are expected to breeze into Las Vegas this week-end for the 9th Annual World Hip-hop Championships.

Yup!

There will be a lot of hippin' & lockin' going down!

"We like to think of the event as the Olympics of hip-hopping," once dancer quipped during a warm up at the Red Rock Resort where the semi-finals are currently underway.

According to organizers, the event has grown three-fold since it first started up a scant few years ago.

The competition appeals to both young and old alike.

On the sidelines, I couldn't help but notice how remarkably innovative and talented the dancers are in respect to their high-spirited routines this year.

The winning hip-hop team will snatch up a $20,000.00 1st prize!

The final round of competitions take place at the Orleans arena on Sunday evening.

Tickets are $25.00.

Dancing with the Stars...Tiler Peck wows! Kate counts blessings! Soap hunk gets axe!

Back to suds, Aiden!

There was a lot of drama this evening on the ABC Network's hit show "Dancing with the Stars".

While viewers at home chewed their nails on the edge of their seats - as they wondered if Kate would make the cut and return triumphantly next week - the determined reality-show Mom was distracted (teary-eyed one moment) about a custody battle she was now facing in her personal life.

Whew!

The gal - who cleans up good - breezed through cliff-hanging moments at the close of the show.

Wisely, the producers interspersed the proceedings tonight, with a couple of live performances which were top-notch.

Seasoned pro - Shaday, for instance - wowed audiences with two sets that were soothing to the senses.

While her stage persona (wardrobe choices & oversized "bun") left a lot  be desired, fans were undoubtedly inclined to overlook her ho-hum stage presence, and tap their feet to the catchy beat of the engaging tunes.

In fact, back-up dancers (who performed out front on the roomy stage) rustled up a routine or two that were thoroughly entertaining.

Their appealing threads - jeans, colorful t-shirts, and caps - are sure to spark a street trend.

Probably the highlight of the night was a dramatic performance by Tiler Peck - a dancer - with the New York City Ballet.

The dramatic piece - choreographed by Travis Wall - was part of the respected Macy's "Stars of Dance" series.

The staging for - "Nuttin But Stringz" - was nothing short of dynamic.

The thrilling highly-stylized dance routine was impeccably in step.

In fact, the tricky moves signalled an innovative trend in dance.

A troupe of young dancers starting out in their illustrious careers - also offered up their own particular brand of ballroom dancing in another segment - that was fresh, professional, and traditional in many respects.

In a nostalgic moment, the in-house dance instructors took a stroll down memory lane.

For the most part, the hoofers glided onto stages around the world when they were just toddlers.

A myriad of aged snapshots - capturing the aspiring two-steppers in early performances, tugged at the hearstrings.

Anna started at age 6, and followed after her mother, who was a role model.

Chelsie cried before each lesson when she was a kid. Hated it!

Tony was frustrated by the fact he was always playing a mushroom or tree.

At one point, Tom Bergeron spied a couple of the outfits one dancer was forced to wear in those early stages of his budding career, and was inclined to crack a joke.

"Gosh, I'm surprised Maks didn't have to go through therapy after being forced to wear those costumes."

The dancers recalled that it was a nasty experience coming up through the ranks.

"There was a lot of pushing and shoving among the contestants - nail scratching - too," one instructor laughingly remembered.

"It's not like here where you have one couple on stage. Twenty couples were packed in and bitterly elbowing for position."

In a preivew of what is to come next week, audiences were treated to movie clips featuring the "Dancing with the Stars" talent pool.

One segment next Monday will be a scary horror genre piece.

Preview shots revealed the footage primarily focuses on macabre fright-night bill-of-fare straight out of the howling B-movie classic selections oft screened at revival houses at the stroke of midnight at the witching hour.

In another spoof, a studly dancer assumes the fictional character of "Glambo"

Can't wait!  Should be a hoot!

Neicy and Evan will be "starring" in a black & white tribute to classic films in the romance genre.

Cleverly, it's been titled: ChaChablanca.

Brooke - who I singled out as shabbily-dressed Monday night - made a star turn tonight.

This evening the hostess was dazzling in a blood-red body-fitting gown, swept up "do", and a smattering of diamonds at the neckline which caught the light and threw zillions of eye-catching rainbows here and there.

For some inexplicable reason, Tom Bergeron's jacket sleeves were all wrinkled, though.

If the stylish suit was fashioned in linen, that may be the reason why, since that fabric is so susceptible to crinkling and soiling.

Len stood out as a fashion plate, too, in a smart-looking suit, pastel-colored tasteful tie, and pocket pouffe.

As the elimination round started to inch forward, Jake noted he was saddened by the whole process.

"I've been so close to everyone that my heart goes out to anyone who may be cut."

Kate was upbeat and ecstatic.

"For the first time I was totally relaxed and had a lot of fun."

Chad, one of the most confident dudes on "Dancing" - down-to-earth and able to poke fun of himself - described himself as a work-in-progress.

Now, that's a true artist, speaking up!

Finally, the moment arrived, and everyone collectively held their breath.

Drum roll, please!

Kate escaped the axe, but Aiden got the old heave-ho.

At this juncture, fans in the audience jumped to their feet, and expressed their wild appreciation.

Tom Bergeron was so swept up in the emotion of the moment, he was inclined to poignantly note for the record, that Aiden was the first contestant to exit in the fourth round to every garner such a generous heartfelt send off.

Then, he noted that Aiden would be appearing on Jimmy Kimmel later tonight.

Ooops!

Watch out, Aiden!

In a promo earlier in the day, the perky talk show host made a quip about gonging loser contestants or feeding them to hungry crocodiles back stage.

Go in the front door, please!

And, exit quickly.

Fans (myself included) still intend to tune in on romantic afternoons to catch you on the soaps.

Microsoft...employees bite forbidden Apple! Quote of day....

According to a news report on the radio, execs at Microsoft were a little miffed to learn that employees at Seattle's headquarters were skulking about in the shadows with Apple products in hand.

In fact, on one occasion - after spying a cell phone with another brand name etched on its state-of-the-art stylish face - a head honcho snatched the gizmo up and pretended to be on the verge of smashing the offending communicaton device into smitherines.

When a reporter asked the top brass to comment on the issue, they were quick on the up-take, and offered up this quote of the day:

"Employees use rivals products to better understand the competition."

And, drool at the thought of conjuring up such cool inventory beyond their own creativity capability still!

Barack Obama...Scott Brown challenges Prez to basketball match!

How about a flex competition?
(oil up those dudes!)

The health care issue has dragged on for too long.

Maybe it's time to settle the score with the Republicans the old-fashiioned way, eh?

Scott Brown has challenged the Preisdent to a two-on-two basketball game to 21 points.

According to the Senator - who just picked up the slack in Massachusetts - it may be a great ice-breaker.

That's the problem wth laying your cards down on the table, Barack;  the oppostion doesn't have a poker face to deal with.

Even still, the Commander-in-Chief may give the once studly (former Cosmopolitan nude lay-out model) a run for his money.

Although the Prez may come off a bit goofy on his bicycle when he hits the trails at the crack of dawn - in contrast - his moves are pretty smooth on the court.

Obama is pretty sly - which fathoms into determining how he landed in the White House - in spite of the fact the well-oiled machinery of the Clinton clan was breathing down his neck on the election trail.

"We'll be having our meeting on the court instead of  in the caucus room," Brown chuckled.

Senator Brown intends to pair up with his daugher (Ayla) and invites Barack to rustle up the female of his choice.

Barack better choose wisely, though;  after all, Brown's daughter is a scholarship player for Boston University.

Play ball!

Go get 'em Prez!
