Sahara Hotel...Nostalgia sale! Everything must go! Including the kitchen sink!

Shortly after the elaborate lobby of the Sahara Hotel shut down - and management took inventory - a spokesperson for the legendary Hotel (where Elvis, the Beatles, and a host of other notables either graced the stage or passed-out on the comfy beds in the well-appointed suites too pooped to participate) announced that the business entity which controlled the assets would be selling-off all the contents of the once-sumptuous lodgings.

Uh-huh!

The Sahara Hotel is holding a "nostalgia sale".

"Everything must go," the owners noted yesterday to the media, in no uncertain terms.

Except for the "roller-coaster" - out front - which stays.

Starting tomorrow, the Sahara will toss open its doors - at $10.00 a pop - and allow serious buyers (lookie-loos, too) to browse for keepsakes.

And, what a treasure trove that will be!

"I'd like one of those Elvis publicity stills that has  been gracing the wall for years," one fan gushed to a reporter who was there to take stock of the inventory.

A few former guests are bent on snapping up the "Camel" table lamps which once rested on each nightstand in all the suites at the Sahara until renovations a few years ago which transformed the overall "look" of the Vegas digs.

A life-size camel is also going on the chopping block ($12,000.00) alongside slot machines, gaming tables, and even the kitchen sink!

Unfortunately, collectors - and sentimental locals - won't be able to take a gander at the offerings online before the items start flying out the front door.

All interested parties must pay the entrance fee up-front at the lobby doors to get a glance at the unique collectibles.

"It's first-come, first-served," underscored the Hotel employee with a tinge of melancholy in his voice.

The "yard sale" kicks off tomorrow bright-and-early (if I am not mistaken).

Check with the Hotel staff for details.

See 'ya there!

On the heels of her sizzling-hot release, Judas - Pop Diva Lady Gaga - will charge into the rehearsal hall at American Idol next week to mentor the four finalists vying for pop star super stardom.

The segment - featuring the Queen of the Monster circuit - will be broadcast May 11th.

Robert Plant...mellow Led Zeppeliin front man appears on Dave Letterman!

Legendary rocker - Robert Plant (replete with curly locks and pasty face due to unflattering stage lighting at the Ed Sullivan Theatre) - delighted fans and viewers alike last night when he sat down for a down-to-earth chat with late night talk show host Dave Letterman.

When asked about his musical roots, Plant moaned that radio in the 50's was pretty dire.

Consequently, he relied on innovative new sounds emanating out of Germany during that time frame, for inspiration.

Plant confessed that he was also initially influenced by Muddy Waters and the Memphis Blues.

He excitedly recalled that when he first heard - Heartbreak Hotel - the soulful quality of Elvis's voice resonated to the very core of his being.

On that note, Dave quizzed Plant about crossing paths with Elvis decades ago, during the early days of his heady career.

"We were invited up to his suite at this well-known Hotel. There were a couple of Gorillas guarding the door. The suite was something out of Get Smart, 'ya know - one room leading into another - that sort of thing.  And, there were these babes with bee-hive hairdos - who all looked like Sandra Dee and Stella Stevens - hanging around the Hotel suite," he laughingly recalled with a smidgen of humor in his distinctive voice.

As to Elvis, well, that was quite a memorable meet-and-greet.

"Actually, when he stepped out of the bedroom, he sort-of glided towards me and gave the best Elvis impression he ever performed on stage," Plant joked in so many words.

According to Plant, Elvis was smooth, sensual, and debonair in person.

The musician noted that today he is greatly influenced by fok music and the Smokey Mountain sounds, which he asserted to Letterman, originated from Ireland and Scotland when  immigrants first settled on U.S. Shores.

Not surprisingly, his number last night on stage was pretty easy-going and low-key.

Mellowing with age?

Ah, it happens to the best of us, eh?

Ann Margaret...CSI guest star! Elvis dance partner going strong!

Did ever wonder what happened to sex kitten Ann Margaret?

The stunning beauty - a sizzling sexy dance partner of the late-great Elvis Presley (brief romantic fling?) - just wrapped up a stint on CSI after years of steering clear of the glaring spotlight.

Film buffs will recall that Ms. Margaret starred opposite Elvis in Viva Las Vegas.

The classic movie is regarded by many as one of Presley's best movies, which was attributed to the strong screen attraction between the "King" and leading lady Ann Margaret.

The box-office hit - which boasted ten extravagant musical numbers, was posted at No. 11 in the Top 20 Movie Box Office offerings of 1964.

The breathy star always remained respectful of “El” - even after he passed to spirit - and never tried to capitalize on her relationship (in-front-of or behind the cameras) with the King (unlike the other hangers-on in the inner circle).

In fact, in her own memoirs, Ms. Margaret referred to Elvis as her "soul mate".

The legendary hip-swiveller was quite fond of the gorgeous Ms. Margaret, too.

No wonder!

Ms. Margaret has always been a class act.

Fans may recall that the fifty’s triple threat (dancer/singer/actress) was unexpectedly sidelined for a short period because of a serious injury she suffered due to a terrible stage accident which broke a few bones and shook her up somewhat.

On Sunday, September 10 (1972) while performing at Lake Tahoe, the legend fell 22 feet from an elevated platform to the stage and suffered a broken left arm, cheekbone and jawbone.

At the UCLA treatment center in Los Angeles, the star received meticulous reconstructive surgery to her face that required wiring her mouth shut and putting her on a liquid diet.

The dazzling talent was unable to work for ten weeks, but ultimately - trooper that she was - managed to return to work shortly after that to continue her contractual commitments.

Needless to say, the pretty star was valiant through it all.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the stunning beauty.

Ann-Margaret established her “acting chops” to serious critics in a break-out role in "52 Pick Up" starring opposite Roy Scheider.

It's a role worth catching on film today, if you’re a big Ann-Margaret fan.

Actor John Glover put it succinctly when he quipped of Margaret’s character in the flick:

“She’s still got a lot of good mileage on her.”

That appears to apply today, as the ET interview proved this week, when she chatted up the host about her acting gig on CSI.

In spite of Entertainment Tonight’s sly effort to get up-close - and surreptitiously establish whether the star may have had plastic surgery in recent days - Ms. Margaret held up well under close scrutiny.

If Joan Rivers is a poster woman for what can go wrong under the knife, Ms. Margaret is an example of what a surgeon - with expert skilled hands - can accomplish.

Ann-Margret was born in Stockholm, but spent her childhood years in Valsjöbyn, a small rural locale she described as a small town of lumberjacks and farmers.

Ann-Margret moved to the United States in November 1946 with her mother and father.

They settled just outside of Chicago in Wilmette (Illinois).

Ms. Margaret showed great dance ability when she first took lessons at the Marjorie Young School of Dance, and so, her supportive parents helped nudge her in that direction.

In 1961, she was invited to take a screen test at 20th Century Fox and was subsequently signed to a seven-year contract.

Ann-Margret made her film debut in "Pocketful of Miracles" starring opposite with Bette Davis and directed by Frank Capra.

There was no looking back for Ann-Margaret!

Miss Margaret married her long-time Business Manager - Roger Smith - and the two have savored a lasting romantic relationship.

They have cut a fine swath together at appearances around Tinsel Town over the years.

In recent years, the aging beauty has been a bit reclusive, so it was a joy to catch clips of her upcoming stint on the highly-rated drama show - CSI - in which she plays a philanthropist who is stalked by a maniac.

Congrats on the juicy part, Ann-Margaret!

Elvis Presley...fans swarm to Graceland to mourn King!

The original Americn Idol!

Graceland!

A solemn procession of fans zig-zagged down the street, soft etheric light flickered from mood-enhancing candles casting shadows that played with the imagination, and strains of nostalgic Elvis Presley hits fluttered about soulfully this way 'n that.

Ah-ha!

The date marking the calendar (August 16th) is the 33rd Anniversary of the King's death and the fans haven't forgotten.

In fact, thousands upon thousands of El fans descended on Graceland from around the planet to put in a show at the annual candlelight vigil which attracted respectful mourners expected to hang-out overnight 'til the wee hours of the morning.

Some probably sadly shook their heads as they shuffled along to his resting place.

After all, the Pop crooner - who started out recording simple straight-forward tunes at Sun Records way-back-when - passed to spirit at such a young age (42).

Die-hard followers were inclined to play their favorite El tunes as they waited patiently for their chance to say a prayer or pay their respects in front of his decorative gravestone.

The procession toppe off (and officially closed out) a festive week of entertaining events such as feature film screenings, Elvis sightings, tribute competitions, and on-going upbeat dialogues about all-things Elvis Presley at fan club meetings.

This year, the Elvis event boasted insightful conversations  with writers, photographers and close friends of Elvis.

For example, Joe Esposito (a member of El's entourage also-known-as the Memphis Mafia) was on hand to the delight of those in attendance.

Fans from as far away as Japan and England browsed Graceland's sprawling souvenir shopping center and gathered under a large tent across the street from the mansion to listen to performers belt out Elvis tunes.

One fan's comments best expressed the feelings of many.

"Elvis has touched a lot of hearts, and there's something spiritual about him."

Amen!

Big Elvis...whole lotta lovin' goin' on! To marry @ Bill's gambling hall Thursday!

Whole lotta lovin' goin' on with Big Elvis!

As I passed by Bill's gambling Hall several months ago on the glitzy Vegas strip, there was quite a lot of wild cheering and frenzied fhigh-spirited clapping joyously being directed towards the Casino stage on the main floor.

Big Elvis just wrapped up a vastly entertaining set of Elvis hits and was now basking in a blanket of love streaming his way from adoring fans!

Fat Elvis

Thursday, the lovable 400 lb. lug (give or take an ounce or two) will be bowing to a posse of International Journalists from around the globe, who are flying in to witness Big El's wedding to a sweet gal by the name of Amanda Lasham!

Pete Vallee (his real name) met his betrothed-to-be last fall.

At least count, at least two films crews from overseas (Argentine & Italian in origin) have committed to filming the festive event!

At press time, Details magazine confirmed they assigned a photographer and feature writer to cover the event.

See 'ya there!

Elvis Presley...a Potato Head? King's estate sells out...

Nothing is sacred, I guess!

And, just maybe the latest marketing efforts by the Presley estate to rustle up big bucks, is starting to turn fans off.

For the first time in years, one local performer acknowledged that he was moving on, exiting the auditorium.

"Elvis isn't a lucrative act for impersonators anymore," he confided.

So what of Hasbro's deal to release a Potato Head Doll of Elvis with two wardrobe options (jumpsuit or black-leather-clad option) during tribute week to the King in August?

Will the novel toy be snapped up or will it ring the death knell for Elvis's once enviable stature in the souvenir industry?

American Idol...Adam Lambert performs! Elvis remembered! Ellen washed out!

American Idol got a shot in the arm tonight when Adam Lambert turned up - all glam - and mentored a handful of the young hopefuls competing on this season's talent show extravaganza.

The first thing you notice about the charismatic pop icon is his eyes.

The luminous peepers - with a hint of sparkle and sly mischief peering out - are a startling blue (me thinks!) brought to the fore with shades of eye shadow that accent the obvious.

This boy is pretty!

The "do" was a little over-the-top, though.  Too much gel, Adam.

And the wardrobe - a make-shift ensemble of shirt-like shifts - a bit drab.

Under the weather last night, kid?

But, Lambert is mesmerizing, and definitely has star quality.

A couple of the kids warbled Elvis tunes - which, in the case of crooner Casey James - was a terrible mistake.

Simon echoed my sentiments precisely.

"It was such a forgetable song. Why would you perform that?"

Ellen and the other Judges were polite, commended the cutie for taking on the challenge, and offered up kudos for his golden voice, stage persona, and the like.

"You look at home in a sea of girls," one quipped.

Frankly, the ponytail look, is a dead one as far as I'm concerned.

And, the wispy bit of whiskers at his lip, downright silly.

Would you plunk a sloppy kiss on that?

Casey pines to be a rocker, but is middle-of-the-road top-forty, all the way.

Until he fathoms that reality he's kidding himself, eh?

Tim's rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love" - with a spare bare-bones guitar back-up - was straightforward and honest.

Whenvever I get up at Karaoke in WeHo (heh, Kenny!) and warble that one, I jokingly snarl to the half-drunk crowd of buffed dudes, that it is one of the songs that "killed" Elvis.

There were two Elvis's essentially.

The lithe, hip-swivelling crooner, who was raw and wild and oozing with sensuality.

Best hits of that era?

"Return to Sender" and "Heartbreak Hotel"!

The "E" of a later generation was all smaltz, Vegas routine, and a spent shadow of "Elvis".

A gentleman I once knew who worked on one of the TV Specials Elvis  signed on for, confided that the editors were forced to utilize quite a few magic studio techniques, to make the musical event fly.

For good reason.

Elvis oft forgot the words, stumbled on stage, and lost focus throughout.

But, the fans didn't care, they gobbled the legend up.

Like the Kennedy assassination, folks tend to recall where they were when they heard the shocking news of Elvis's death.

I was on Toronto Island at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club when a friend telephoned me about the disturbing unexpected news.

When I turned to an immigrant from India next to me, and relayed the unbelievable news, his response was pretty low-key.

"Oh, he was just a pop star. No one will remember him tomorrow. Who cares?"

I distinctly recall that I assured him that Elvis death's was "big news" and that many people would - not only be stunned - but plummet into a deep well of despair.

Sure enough - within days - fans, hungry media hounds, and curious lookie-loo's - were on their way to Memphis to take part in the circus-like atmosphere that prevailed for weeks-on-end.

When Michael sang "In the Ghetto" tonight, it brought back memories of Elvis.

Just before Elvis released that song, his music career was pretty much in the dumper.

With the release of that song (which touched fans and music aficiandos and tough critics alike) Elvis was elevated to a new status (and level of respect)  in the industry.

It wasn't just the ballad, or his phrasing, that struck a chord.

No sir, it was the sentiment.

The lyrics were comparable to Martin Luther King's speech about having a dream.

One judge labelled Michael's performance sleepy, but on the heels of that harsh criticism, he noted the vocals were hot.

Ellen, on the other hand, noted that she was glad (in retrospect) that they saved Mike  from packing up and heading home with his tail between-his-legs last week..

Katie Stevens was a fine mess visually.

All those do-dads and tacky sequins on her outfit were distracting.

Judges need to stress that the music industry is not just about cutting records and performing, but also, about style, originality, stage presence and persona.

By the way, the popular cast of "Glee" was in the audience.

The hit ensemble show follows "American Idol" on the Fox Network.

In closing, you may be excited to hear that Adam Lambert is slated to perform live tonight on Idol.

He'll show those kids how it's done, just betcha!

Elvis Presley...Lisa Marie and Priscilla shun efforts to raise funds for El's star!

Elvis in lanky handsome days...

Oh, pooh!

I read in one of the local dailies this week that fans have raised about $13,000.00 to honor the King with a star on Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Riviera Hotel.

However, there appears to be a shortfall. Another two grand is needed to cinch the deal before El's much-deserved plaque may be unveiled in the desert oasis amid ten million points of glittering light.

Should be a simple matter to raise a couple of thousand bucks for the King, right?

Frankly, I was disgusted to learn that when Lisa Marie, Priscilla, and a major shareholder of the Elvis Presley estate were approached, the fans were snubbed. In fact, they didn't even get the courtesy of a reply.

Imagine that, the generous Hollywood Star and Vegas Legend filled their sow's purses. But, they can't cough up a few lousy pesos to assist his fans in reaching their cherished goal?

I find it incredulous that no one at City Hall - or even a handful of officials in government - have made any good-faith effort to pitch in, either.

What a nasty oversight when you consider that Elvis was a big draw in Vegas, lined a lot of pockets with cold hard cash, and made the city a popular destination spot for Entertainment.

Elvis memorabilia is a big seller on the strip, too. And, Elvis impersonators abound in lounges all around "show city", raking in the dough because of the enduring legacy of the "man".

But, no one cares about honoring the giant with a star?

He must be crying in his grave!

Although Elvis might say - "Fools rush in" - I have no qualms about doing so myself.

I say, shame!

What a bunch of selfish, inconsiderate, bast**ds they are in Sin City!

Boycott Vegas, folks, 'til Elvis gets his overdue star on the strip!

Jennifer Tilly..."The Caretaker", free screening for Industry Professionals; Fine Arts Theatre! March 8th...

On International Woman's Day - March 8th, 2008 - the Fine Arts Theatre (Beverly Hills) will be presenting a free screening of the feature - "The Caretaker" - starring two popular stars - Jennifer Tilly and Judd Nelson...

Industry Professionals - both in front-of and behind-the-camera - are invited to attend by reserving now at the Screening Series Website,

www.screenitfirst.com/ssg/events/list

A plot summary...

"A group of teenage boys out to give their girlfriends a good scare on Homecoming night, which also happens to be Halloween, head to an abandoned house in an out-of-the-way grapefruit orchard where they uncover the story of a real life urban legend, well-known as "The Caretaker"."

The Fine Arts Theatre is run and operated by Michael S. Hall, and is an elegant state-of-the-art screening facility, which was completely refurbished in recent years to its former glory from the heydays of Hollywood.

In fact, when I attended a preview of "Moscow Chill" the other evening, series Producer - Bob Nuchow - pointed out that this was the infamous theatre where the great Elvis Presley used to screen films for his closest buddies in the close-knit Memphis Mafia!

Imagine that, you might actually settle back into a plush velvet seat the King once relaxed in!

In recent years, many events have been hosted at the Fine Arts Theatre by the Screen Actors Guild, AFTRA, and a continuing sponsor - BackStage West.

For those who prefer afternoon entertainment, there will also be a screening of April Moon at 2:30 p.m. earlier in the day.

The feature stars: William McNamara (Copycat, Chasers), Ryan Michelle Bathe (Good Fences, Brother to Brother), Kevin Dobson (1408) & Stephanie Reibel as April.

See 'ya there!

Justin Timberlake...male artist of year?

Next week, fans of Justin Timberlake will be tuning in to HBO to watch a special concert performance.

Timberlake has been nominated for the prestigious MTV award for the "Male Artist of the year"...but was also was given the nod in six other MTV musical categories.

Unlike most break-away stars in all-male bands, Timberlake chucked out the bubblegum tunes - and chose instead - to gravitate towards a sly, distinctive, talky beat with obvious roots in a vibrant Afro-American Culture; which was ready, able, and willing to propel him forward in the ranks.

Looks like the gamble has paid off for his handlers.

To some he's an oddity.

White-skinned, but underneath, moving to a rhythmic, black beat.

He's not alone in his musings.

Whenever I'm out in the mean streets of L.A, it baffles me a little when I encounter teenage white boys referring to their "homie" or ranting about some guy in the hood who's been disrespectin' them.

Yeah, Black culture has gloriously surged forward, in myriad manifestations; so "on the cuttin' edge of cool" that anxious, vulnerable teens are inclined to jump on the bandwagon.

You see it in all the trappings: the sloppy, oversize T's; the sulky, loose-fit dungarees hangin' down to expose designer boxers; the dazzlin' eye-poppin' bling. And, in a swagger that's animal in nature.

The handshake that bonds is all deft knuckle-bends and clever finger work, gliding over skin surface.

And, the musical staging for the tribunal is distinctive as ***:

There are a lot of fluid, confident moves, talky moments, and splashy, sensual sexual images.

Yo, what attitude!

The early days of Rock 'n Roll - which generated a lot of hysteria - seem so tame by comparison.

Yes, when Elvis Presley first busted out on the radio, before he performed publicly, everyone thought he was a Black, Gospel singer.

Even still, he faced a couple of obstacles on his meteoric rise to Pop Icon status.

Yes, Little Richard gyrated in what amounted to a wild, tribal ritual on stage.

But the idea of Elvis in that posture was too much for Puritanical, middle-class censors to digest.

The hip-swivellin' was too overt, and the sneer way too denigrating - "a bad influence on the youth of America" - critics argued.

When Presley first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show cameramen were instructed not to shoot below the waist!

Today, just about anythin' goes - innovative musical artists in the limelight now - cross-mix, draw on, and influence each other's musical styling - without boundaries.

As they should.

Music is an International language.
