Oh Land...pretty Pop flavor appears @ trendy Cafe Du Nord! San Francisco! April 13th!

Oh Land, the pretty bombshell Pop Singer making waves around the country with her hit dance tune -"Son of a Gun" - is sashaying into San Francisco to open for "Francis and Lights" at the Cafe Du Nord on Wednesday Night (April 13th).

Readers at the Tattler may recall that I posted a review of her live! Stage Performance which I caught at The Abbey in WeHo a few weeks ago.

Post:  02/14/2011

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2011/02/oh-landlive-performance-abbey-hit-with.html

Since then, as predicted, the Danish lovely - with oodles of talent and charisma to boot - has been trotted out to perform for gushing audiences on the Late Night talk-show circuit (Dave Letterman, for example).

Oh Land - while thrilled with the attention - remains down-to-earth and realistic.

"So, already at 10,  I was aware that I could be replaced by somebody else at any time. I definitely grew up with a number on my belly," she confided to a reporter at the San Francisco Examiner.

"Because at Ballet school (which she vigorously attended in her youth), half of the ones they took in each year were thrown out the next, and you would get a letter each year, telling you if you could continue or not. It was quite horrible," she recalled in horror.

And, you thought the Black Swan (Natalie Portman) had it bad!

Now, in the realms of the Pop spotlight, does she have to worry about being just a flavor of the month?

West Hollywood...all-male gay City Council looms on horizon! Political times are-a-changing!

A candidate for West Hollywood City Council - known for hanging an effigy of Sarah Palin on his roof during the 2008 Presidential Race - is running alongside five other fresh faces in the upcoming election on Tuesday.

John Heilman - the current Mayor (a City Council bench-warmer since 1984 when the boon town was first incorporated as a "gay" city) - is fighting for his seat with two fellow council members (Abbe Land and Lindsay Horvath).

The bid for power in WeHo - affectionately known to the locals as "gay gulch" - is expected to be a contentious battle right up until the last ballot is cast.

In the event the six upstarts nab three available seats, WeHo would make history for voting in the country's first all-male gay City Council.

Subsequently, there has been an outcry from a handful of the locals.

"Certainly it would be quite unique and historic. But straight women and lesbians are feeling like - "If these guys get there who is going to look out for us" - one resident piped up a bit indignantly to one media outlet.

On the other hand, quite a few contented WeHo males are happy with the status quo, and the way the city is growing.

Even still, candidates have been focusing their debates on parking restrictions, over development in the neighborhood (too many unsightly odd-ball Condo Units, for example, in place of quaint cottages that were once the norm), and the need to preserve LGBT culture in the community.

Personally, I'm all for new "blood" in City Council chambers!

Getting folks out to the polls will be key in accomplishing that task!

See 'ya there!

Oh-Land...live performance @ Abbey a hit with locals! Copenhagen beauty's star on rise!

On the rounds of WeHo last night, I stumbled onto a very special live performance by Copenhagen beauty with an unusual name - Oh-Land - at the ever-popular Abbey.

The fresh-faced talent has a captivating stage presence and a great sound!

Surprisingly - in spite of the limited acoustics and small ill-equipped stage at the Robertson Blvd hang-out - the sexy pop singer managed to turn out a set that was vastly entertaining.

Oh-land was definitely a crowd-pleaser!

When she gazed into the audience, even the jaded locals who frequent the trendy watering hole, melted away.

Once Oh-Land began to rock the stage, the house was up - dancing & clapping - and cheering the sensual chanteuse on.

One of her handlers, who introduced her last night to the enthusiastic pub crawlers, noted that an album will debut in March.

And, it was also announced that Oh-Land has already managed to snag the eye of talent scouts around the country.

No wonder!

In the near future, Oh-Land (who graciously spelled out her name to me backstage amidst a throng of delighted fans) is expected to appear on a handful of the top-rated talk shows on Network TV in the near future.

I expect that her career will zoom into the stratosphere once America is introduced to this gorgeous talented young woman.

Oh-Land may give Lady Gaga a run for her money!

West Hollywood...City Council Members attend "Fresh East" Dragon Dance ceremony!

When Pavilions renovated their WeHo flagship grocery store this year, they also erected a row of spanking new retail outlets, to attract tenants along trendy Santa Monica Boulevard at Robertson.

Last night, as I was whizzing by the festive lot decorated for the Yuletide Season, I spied "Fresh East" (an upscale eatery featuring Asian Cuisine) tossing an opening-night party to kick-off their entree into the multi-cultural community.

Inside - as Council Members John Heilman and Abbe Land gazed on from the sidelines - a spectuacular Dragon Dance wowed all the guests ready to chow down on the delectable eats about to be offered up.

According to Eastern tradition, a Dragon Dance - replete with a riot of clanging bells and jolting percussion beats - is a ceremonial must to drive away evil spirits at New Year - and thus - bestow good fortune and blessings on the business establishment in the months ahead.

Judging by the festivities I was witness to last evening, Fresh East is off-and-running, to sure-fire success in WeHo!

Good fortune, eh?

RAGE...gang of SANTAS swoop down on trendy WEHO cocktail bar!

If you were cruising by RAGE on Sunday afternoon at Happy Hour, the sight of a few dozen tipsy Santa's in their ubiquitious eye-catching red & white outfits (trimmed in luxurious faux fur) must have caused your head to crank around!

The celebration - known as Santacon - was tossed together by a Merry Band of revellers tongue-in-cheek out to ring in the Yuletide season - and shake up the normally-jaded neighborhood a tad - in trendy WeHo!

Mission: Accomplished!

Cheers!

West Hollywood Pavillions...finally gets message! Hires white male security guard...sigh!

After the fiasco with the Popcorn Mafia at the New Beverly Cinema last night, I zipped over to Pavillions to snatch up a snack just shy of the witching hour.

As I strolled through the front doors, I pinched myself.

Was I dreaming?

Right off-the-bat (in plain view) I caught sight of newly-installed security guard.

And, guess what?

He was tall, white, and standing at his post in a respectful dignified manner!

At long last, Pavillions woke up, and smelled the coffee.

In recent weeks, shortly after a long drawn-out renovation, Pavillions threw its doors open wide once again.

But, the celebratory mood subsided - and turned to anger - when long-time Caucasian residents continued to encounter rude imposing African-American security guards on duty daily who harassed them when they shopped.

To many, it was obvious, that the posse of gruff uniformed employees were racist.

Although many complaints were uttered up - and I penned a couple of posts on the controversial issue - Pavillions proceeded to cast a blind eye to the ongoing problem.

In view of what has finally unfolded before my very eyes, it appears that Pavillions has finally fathomed the intriguing (complex) social strata that is at the heartbeat of West Hollywood.

Now that I have published this post, I expect all the girls (and local females, too) will be darting in to Pavillions to get a gander at the tall handsome security guard, who fits into the terrain comfortably.

Sorry, folks, I saw him first!

Rock Hudson...lover Marc Christian dies! Brief encounter...

Today the Los Angeles Times announced in the obituary section of the daily that Marc Christian passed to spirit on June 2nd (!) earlier this year of pulmonary complications @ the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burank (CA).

Why was the report not forthcoming sooner?

Christian's sister - Susan Dahl - confided to a journalist that she did not publicly announce the death because she was respecting Marc's wish for privacy.

However, once contacted, Ms. Dahl confirmed the facts surrounding Christian's medical condition which resulted in his demise, and the actual date of passing.

Mr. Christian triggered a glut of  a sensational headlines around the globe when it was publicly disclosed that -  he was not only Rock Hudson's lover - buy may have been exposed to HIV (or A.I.D.S.) because of an ongoing sexual relationship with the  50's Screen idol (who allegedly failed to reveal the fact he was a carrier of the deadly virus).

Until that time, little was known about HIV (& A.I.D.S.), except that there was no known cure.

Consequently, when medical facts were first reported in the media, there was a lot of hysteria.

Individuals with the dreaded disease were shunned (even by medical care workers who worried about their own safety), U.S. Immigration Officials denied access to foreigners known to be afflicted with the virus, and a carefree sexually-unhibited lifestyle (once accepted in ultra-liberal states like California) was suddenly strictly-taboo.

There was a lot of finger-pointing, too.

When it was revealed that Rock Hudson was HIV positive (and rapidly advancing to the end stages of full-blown A.I.D.S.) - for the first time since the mysterious outbreak  - a known face became associated with the insiduous disease.

Indeed, Rock's infection actually humanized the disease.

Consequently, there was a rush to raise funds for research - and a collaborative effort by prominent specialists in the realm of infectious disease studies - to come up with medical treatments and a cure.

Understandably, for the aforementioned reasons, the Marc Christian story was forefront in the news.

After all, Christian was not only one of the first gay men to seek a money-damage award from a male lover, but also the first individual (male or female) to seek compensation for being exposed unwittingly to the killer virus while having sex with a partner who willfully failed to disclose their medical condition.

Several years ago, through an acquaintance of mine in New York, I was invited to attend a chic fashion show at a tony estate in Beverly Hills.

On the day of the much-anticipated event, I invited a buxom beauty from Texas - actress Sandra Sexton - to come along for the ride.

Shortly after we settled into our seats, Sandra spied Rock Hudson standing alone on the other side of the room, looking terribly non-chalant.

Suddenly, Sandra poked me in the side, and drawled in that sexy voice of hers:

"Darling, Rock is cruising you."

When  I glanced his way in response to her quip, I happened to catch his eye, and he grinned.

I wasn't surprised by his subtle advances; after all, it was well-known in the gay community that Rock had a thing for young male blonds.

Like moi!

I couldn't help but notice that he appeared to be a bit gaunt, though; nonetheless, the legendary screen idol was still a spectacularly handsome man.

"Go over and talk to him," Sandra urged.

No way, Jose!

I wasn't going to make a fawning fool of myself.

However, shortly after a brief tiff over the issue, I spied the acquaintance who invited me to the soiree chatting up Mr. Hudson.

Well, now, if I was a manipulative conniving person, I would have seized on the opportunity to casually stroll over and say hi to my acquaintance - knowing full well - that he would undoubtedly turn to Rock and introduce us.

But, that was too obvious, in my estimation.

So, I passed.

A short while later, the shocking news about Rock Hudson hit the fan (so to speak), and the grueling legal battle in the Courts over the Marc Christian allegations commenced with every titillating detail being dished up daily.

Of course, defense counsel tore Marc Christian apart, as they are want to do when a litigant is out to fleece their client (before they have the opportunity to raid the coffers first).

Christian was accused of being a male hustler, a gold-digger, a straight dude with no allegiance to anything but a fast buck.

On the contrary, on one brief encounter, I determined that Marc was most certainly gay - or at a minimum - at least bisexual..

For example, one day after devouring a tasty lunch at the French Marketplace in West Hollywood, I strolled into the men's room to snatch up a bit of tissue to blow my nose.

Right away, I noticed a pair of feet parked on the floor inside the stall to the cubicle, so I decided to wait a sec until the guest finished up so I could take care of my own little business.

As I leaned against the wall, I suddenly spotted Marc Christian taking a whiz at the urinal, about two feet away from where I was standing.

The moment his name flashed inside my fuzzy little head, he turned in my direction, and gave me the once-over.

I swear to God!

Then, a second or two later, he stepped back from the urinal, and exposed his half-aroused co** to me!

Whoa nellie!

The rumors were true; he was obviously hung like a horse when "rock" (no pun intended) hard.

No wonder Rock was shacked up with the guy (although I understand that Hudson was no slouch in the meat and potatoes department, either, if you get my drift).

Christian was tempting!

There was a bad-boy quality about him that was kind-of sexually arousing!

But, as far as I was concerned, there was too much baggage.

Bottom line?

I'm not inclined towards toilet-room sex.

Romance me, Dudes.

That's the quickest way to get me into the sack.

Unless you're a handsome blond surfer with chiseled abs in ragged blue jeans, that is!

Gelsons...rip-off prices, moldy stale food, Managers that discriminate and offend!

Stale rolls, overpriced water, and wilted flowers a specialty!

Years ago when I was residing on Flores Street in West Hollywood, I was so spoiled when it came to shopping for groceries and household goods.

Just a hop-and-a-skip away, Mayfair Market beckoned with fresh fruit and vegetables at reasonable cost, a wide selection of name products on the shelves satisfied the most discerning palate, and cheerful cashiers greeted customers with a smile.

Unfortunately, Mayfair Market closed-up-shop one fine day - at which point - Gelson's muscled in on the local scene.

On occasion, when I shopped at Gelson's over the years, it was mostly an unpleasant experience.

So, I started to pick up life's nutritional necessities at Ralph's, Pavilions, wherever.

Now and then, I pop into Gelson's at Flores & Santa Monica to give them a second chance, but due to poor management and the bad attitude of the grocery clerks, Gelson's has basically gone-to-hell in a hand-basket.

For instance, the 2nd last time I sauntered in to the nicely-painted outlet in WeHo, I spied a rotund security guard (female?) - with the face of a blinking night owl - staring each customer up-and-down with disdain as they waltzed through the door.

At one point when I queried the queer-looking uniformed employee about the whereabouts of shampoo - she half-turned and stabbed the air gruffly with a stubby finger - to signal the aisle where the hair products were shelved.

She didn't utter one word!

Yup, all the personality of a worm.

Talk about scraping the barrel for staff to "man" the store!

In one aisle, when a customer's path was blocked by stock boys chatting each other up, it was necessary for the miffed shopper to pointedly interrupt with a curt "excuse me" before they parted and allowed the disgruntled woman through.

No respect for the paying customers, either!

When I noticed that the inexperienced employees left single-servers of ice cream unattended to melt in carts as they slowly hauled their sorry a**es around the store, frankly, I was aghast.

Obviously, these wet-behind-the-ears grunts were uneducated about the health hazards that could conceivably arise when frozen product was carelessly left to melt - then refreeze again - without proper inspection.

By the way, the rip-off prices at Gelson's are not only mind-boggling, but underscore the grocer's insatiable greed!

For example, a small container of rice pudding that may be snapped up at Ralph's or Pavilions for 99 cents, is marked up to a staggering $2.39 (approximate).

I've also noticed that cookies and cereal on the shelves at Gelson's - on average - are at least a dollar-or-two more costly than elsewhere in the vicinity of WeHo.

To their detriment, Gelson's also doesn't appear to care much about monitoring the freshness of their product.

Customers have to point out an item has spoiled before it is removed from the shelf.

For instance, when I plucked up an orange from a product display case one day, the bottom half of the fruit was all moldy!

And, bread products leave a lot to be desired, too.

Since I have a fondness for fresh bread, on occasion I trotted to the bin where the rolls were stocked - only to determine under close inspection (and a surreptitious squeeze or two) - that their buns were stale (or at least a day old).

The asking price for a rock-hard roll?

79 cents a piece ( I kid you not).

In contrast, bread-lovers may be pleased to know that at Ralph's and Pavilions the same kind of roll - fresh out of the oven daily - may be purchased for the bargain-price of 59 cents.

And, don't even entertain the thought of satisfying your sweet tooth with a pastry or high-calorie doughnut at the uppity grocery outlet.

That purchase will throw your budget off-kilter for a week!

In addition to the rip-off prices, stale food on the shelves, and careless stocking procedures at Gelson's (which may cause a touch of food poisoning, for starters), the inappropriate conduct of one of the Managers at Gelson's is a bit disconcerting, too.

For example, one night as I strode up to the cashier to pay for my groceries, the gooky-looking oddball schlepped up to one of the display cases (where gum and tabloid newspapers are cleverly-arranged to grab the attention of impulse-buyers last-minute) and "acted" like he was tabulating items on the shelf.

But, on a couple of occasions when I glanced in his direction (he was almost breathing down my neck at one point) I caught him glancing suggestively at the chest and crotch areas of the body.

Just as I was about to inform him I wasn't interested in his unwanted sexual advances, the cashier proceeded to ring up my items, so I let the matter drop.

Creepy!

Last night, I also noticed that when two young males approached a line that was relatively busy - quick-as-a-wink - he strode over and ushered the cozy twosome to a cash register previously closed.

Meanwhile, shoppers ahead in the line were left waiting!

Yup.

The old letch uses his position as manager to get his rocks off, at the expense of the rights of other shoppers, who were entitled to their just due.

Although Gelson's has a freshly-paved parking lot that may appeal to some, I recommend that in view of the foregoing trouble-spots , discerning shoppers with higher expectations drive on.

Oscar winner Bette Davis once quipped:

"I had to go back to work because someone had to pay for the groceries."

Since Ms. Davis once resided in a penthouse In West Hollywood just shy of Crescent Heights and Fountain Street, it is wholly conceivable she was referring to Gelson's!

Starbucks...immature barista chats about pooh & gossips that male java-drinkers pi** on toilet seat!

Prissy Miss @ Starbucks prefers Vatican flush treatments!

I swung the door wide-open and breezed into the aesthetically-pleasing Starbucks Cafe in WeHo (across from 24-hour fitness) when I immediately caught site of a Barista gossipping with a male patron.

Casually, I strolled up to the counter a dozen or so steps away, where I waited patiently for the dizzy broad to wrap up her acid-tongued put-downs targeted at clueless customers in her midst.

Just as the scatter-brained twenty-something gal approached me - she half-turned - and spied a male patron exit the women's restroom.

At this juncture, she uttered-up an unflattering quip about ignorant fellas inclined to take a whiz in the restroom reserved for "Women", as evidenced by a ubiquitous plaque on the door.

I was taken aback.

Over the years - it has been acceptable practice for guys who frequented the "gay-dominated" Starbucks - to relieve themselves in the one provided for those of the female persuasion in the event the "John" for the Dudes was occupied.

To add a bit of levity to the awkward moment, I laughingly asked her (and a male employee who had just sidled up next to her behind the counter) if she ever noticed that the water closet (no pun intended) for the ladies smelled a lot nicer.

I noted that one employee surmised it was due to the fact that perfumed women drifted in-and-out of the cramped space throughout the day - the end result being - that a waft or two of the expensive scents lingered on for a brief spat after the skirts long departed.

Without batting-an-eye or skipping a beat, she retorted:

"No, it's because we (females?) don't pee on the toilet or the tiles like men do."

Before I could offer up a defense, she rattled on with her distasteful diatribe.

"And, we don't pooh in public, either."

I was aghast!

Was she insinuating that customers actually took a squat outside of Starbucks and let fly with a turd or two on the busy traffic-filled WeHo streets just a hop-and-a-skip away?

"Who's been poohing in public," I quizzed.

Her retort was quick.

"One day I witnessed a guy go into the men's room with a newspaper in his hand and he didn't come out 'til about twenty minutes later," she huffed.

Before I could respond, she continued with her anal chat.

"We don't pooh in public."

Now, it suddenly dawned on me why she was getting her sanitary napkin in a flap.

When potty-mouth spat out the phrase - "poohing in public" - she was obviously inferring that women who flounce into a restroom at a Cafe or restaurant avoid plunking their precious tushes down on the toilet seat to take a dump.

Do they wait until they've crossed the thresh hold at home, before letting-her-rip on the throne?

If that's the case, why doesn't Starbucks just yank out the bowls in the shi**er, to economize?

Before the annoying Barista opened her yap again, I exited with a grin, then quickly sauntered over to the side counter for a bit of cream for my piping-hot tea.

Drats!

The pitcher was empty.

It suddenly dawned on me that if this bitch-on-wheels wasn't so hell-bent on kibitzing shamelessly with customers and intent on getting down on her knees to sniff the edge of the toilet seat for splashes of pee (with the ultimate aim of pointing an accusing finger at a suspect male patron) that she might (OMG) be capable of waiting on a customer promptly - in addition to - properly stocking the sidebars without difficulty or delay.

But - that would require a modicum of common sense, intelligence and professionalism - sadly lacking in this poor excuse for a sentient being.

Obviously, too much Starbucks java rots the brain!

West Hollywood...no longer a "gay" city. Sign of times!

Years ago, when West Hollywood first incorporated as a city, a big ta-do was made about the fact most of the City Council members were openly gay, a large number of the local businesses were owned or operated by their rainbow entrepreneurs, and the neighborhood was populated primarily with "out" fags.

Understandably, West Hollywood became a bit of a gay mecca.

Over the years, events like the annual Gay Pride Parade, grew in momentum and evolved into well-organized, highly-publicized (and accepted) gargantuan pride celebrations.

Today, hundreds of thousands of revellers, usually attend the festivities in June.

Meanwhile, the Carnaval on Halloween, has not only endured as a highlight each fall for the gays - but for the straights, too - who turn out in full force each spooky October 31st.

In fact, the high-energy entertainment extravaganza has become so popular over the years that - E Entertainment, ABC TV, and MTV - usually descend on the high-spirited occasion to capture coverage they'll broadcast on the airwaves all over the U.S.A.

A reporter once referred to West Hollywood as the "hippest" two-square miles on the planet.

Well, as Bob Dylan would warble, the times they are-a-changing.

Where young sexy men once sun-bathed at a local park just a hop-and-a-skip from the Design Center, a dozen or so young families now wile away the mornings with tots in tow.

And - in the early evening - you'll probably encounter more straight couples out shopping at the local grocery than muscled studs on their merry way to "Happy Hour" at trendy watering holes.

Yup, the whole "make-up" (forgive the expression) of the community has changed.

Some say, it's due to the fact a number of old apartment buildings and quaint little cottages have been torn down, and handily replaced with tony apartments and design-forward condominiums.

Well, that's part of the scenario.

Few young gay men can afford the sky-high rents, even with a room-mate cuddling up on the designer couch, in the one-bedroom unit.

When I discussed the trend with a friend the other day, he was inclined to point an accusing finger.

"Gays gentrify an area, then the straights move in."

Well, I don't know that it's a calculated plot, but to some it appears that way.

Others, on the other hand, theorize that because gay rights are now in force - which weren't in place when WEHO was first established - that homosexuals don't need to "cluster" in a ghetto for protection any longer.

Confident, liberated fags fan out now and blend into the communities nearby.

Today, West Hollywood is a mix of gays, seniors, and young straight couples.

Frankly, I find the demographic appealing.

The streets are safe and clean, there are no wild parties late at night during the week to wrestle a light sleeper from deep slumber, and there doesn't appear to be any negative element threatening to upset the status quo.

Gee, I must be getting old!!!
