The City of West Hollywood will present an expanded version of "Beyond Brokeback" with a staged reading of messages, essays, poetry, and music inspired by the award-winning ground-breaking film directed by Oscar-winner Ang Lee.

The event is slated for June 25th and is funded through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Commission, the Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board, and Out West 2011.

The event is sponsored under the auspices of  the One City/One Pride Series.

"Beyond Brokeback" was first developed and performed at the Autry National Center last December as part of its acclaimed "Out West" at the Autry series and in commemoration of the 5th Anniversary of release of the film "Brokeback Mountain".

"Beyond Brokeback" was most recently performed by the Theatre and Dance Department of the University of Wyoming in Laramie for the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice in April and is scheduled to be presented by Chicago’s Roosevelt University in its 3,700 seat historic Auditorium Theatre on November 13th (Director/David Zak).

"Beyond Brokeback: A Staged Reading with Music" was adapted by "Out West" at the Autry creator and producer Gregory Hinton from the 2007 book "Beyond Brokeback: Impact of a Film" written by Members of the Ultimate Brokeback Forum website (culled from over 500,000 posts).

Excerpts of poignant and humorous messages, essays, and poetry (by writers young and old, male and female, gay and straight ) will be interpreted by six readers.

Original songs from the CD “Meet Me on the Mountain” - inspired by the film (written by acclaimed Los Angeles Master Chorale singer/composer Shawn Kirchner) - will also be performed by Kirchner and readers Alice Kirwan Murray, Marlene Head and Michael Butler Murray.

West Hollywood...all-male gay City Council looms on horizon! Political times are-a-changing!

A candidate for West Hollywood City Council - known for hanging an effigy of Sarah Palin on his roof during the 2008 Presidential Race - is running alongside five other fresh faces in the upcoming election on Tuesday.

John Heilman - the current Mayor (a City Council bench-warmer since 1984 when the boon town was first incorporated as a "gay" city) - is fighting for his seat with two fellow council members (Abbe Land and Lindsay Horvath).

The bid for power in WeHo - affectionately known to the locals as "gay gulch" - is expected to be a contentious battle right up until the last ballot is cast.

In the event the six upstarts nab three available seats, WeHo would make history for voting in the country's first all-male gay City Council.

Subsequently, there has been an outcry from a handful of the locals.

"Certainly it would be quite unique and historic. But straight women and lesbians are feeling like - "If these guys get there who is going to look out for us" - one resident piped up a bit indignantly to one media outlet.

On the other hand, quite a few contented WeHo males are happy with the status quo, and the way the city is growing.

Even still, candidates have been focusing their debates on parking restrictions, over development in the neighborhood (too many unsightly odd-ball Condo Units, for example, in place of quaint cottages that were once the norm), and the need to preserve LGBT culture in the community.

Personally, I'm all for new "blood" in City Council chambers!

Getting folks out to the polls will be key in accomplishing that task!

See 'ya there!

West Hollywood Postal Service...dim-witted clerks reason for downfall!

If you read the article in today's daily paper (LA TIMES) you probably weren't surprised to learn that the U.S. Post Office is crying-the-blues over the fact that revenue is down in the billions!

And, the reporter went on to succinctly note, that the sad demise of Uncle Sam's mail carrier may not be far off.

Part of the reason the post office is suffering a downturn - surprise! - is due to the Internet (allegedly).

Computer savvy individuals around the globe are facilitating e-mail services (and services like skype) to reach out and "touch" someone.

In addition, I have personally noticed (I expect others will confirm the trend) that a large segment of the business community has turned elsewhere for more reliable mail and package delivery than the one currently being served up at U.S. Post.

Part of the problem is due to the fact that the corporate giant has chosen to employ a whole slew of mail carriers - who are not only lazy - but rude to customers as well.

A large percentage of the workers are reluctant to get off their fat a**es when a busy patron strolls into the local postal outlet for at-the-counter service - for instance - which is downright annoying to residents who have to frequent the substations (and face the humiliations) almost daily.

But, it is mostly the incompetence - and devil-may-care attitude of these low-life good-for-nothings - that triggers the ire of many.

In the past, I was forced to file a complaint with the Postmaster General in Washington, when I determined that employees at the West Hollywood Postal Station were "tampering" with mail.
In fact, my brother just mailed me a copy of a letter he posted to weeks ago, which was returned to Canada (although it was addressed perfectly).

The envelope was marked "no such person known at this address".

The notice was false, misleading, and erroneous!

What annoys me the most is the fact that I pay through-the-nose for a box office rental to ensure that my mail will be secure!

Obviously, it is not, at the West Hollywood Postal Station.

So, at the end of December when the box fee is due, I am cancelling the service and hiring an independent service that will appreciate my business!

One has only to stroll into the West Hollywood Post Office - and take a gander at the clerks slouched at the counter there - to fathom the problem.

A couple of the middle-aged losers are slower than molasses in January and possess all the charm and intelligence of a worm.

It's time someone put these old cows out to pasture.

Or, would the Post Office just prefer to go by the way of the dinosaur, too?

'Nuff said!

A.I.D.S. Walk Los Angeles..actor Hal Sparks, Mayor Villaraigosa & Ana Ortiz attend! Fundraiser big draw!

Still time to sign up & Register for A.I.D.S. Walk Los Angeles!

Well, it's that time again!

Thousands of California residents - from far-and-wide - will stridently head into West Hollywood tomorrow morning (Sunday Oct. 17th) to participate in (or just cheer on) the annual A.I.D.S. Walk.

At last count, there will be 30,000 strong marching to raise funds for A.I.D.S. research and to help provide benefits (such as low-cost housing and prescription drugs) to the needy afflicted with the killer disease.

For example, since its inception in 1985, AIDS Walk  has benefited AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), an AIDS service organization dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease; reducing the incidence of HIV infection; and advocating for fair and effective HIV–related public policy.

AIDS Walk Los Angeles makes it possible for APLA to provide urgently needed food, dental care, safe housing, and much more to people with HIV/AIDS who also face poverty, hunger, and homelessness.

APLA also runs the county’s largest network of HIV prevention programs with the hope of ending the epidemic in Los Angeles.

As usual, a host of celebrated guests are expected to turn up at the podium to utter up a glut of inspiring pep talks,  sure to get the walkers in a festive mood for the occasion once again.

Keep you eyes out for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman, and celebrity guests Bob Harper, Pauley Perrette, Ana Ortiz, Sara Ramirez, Michael Urie, LaKisha Jones, Hal Sparks, Megan Boone, Sam Jaeger,  Joshua Gomez, Michelle Bonilla, and Barrett Foa.

There's still time to register,  join in on the fun, and make a contribution:

http://www.aidswalk.net/losangeles/
Once the fundraisers cross the finish line, there will be an upbeat post-Walk party in front of the stage - featuring local KIIS-FM DJ Jay Rodriguez - and some of L.A.’s finest food trucks!

Free parking and shuttle service are available at the Beverly Connection parking structure (enter from La Cienega), Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (enter from Gracie Allen Way or George Burns Road), or 8899 Beverly Boulevard (between Doheny and Robertson).

Free parking is not available this year at the Pacific Design Center.

BOO!

Boy, are they on the wrong page, eh?

Maybe the community should stop shopping at the Pacific Design Center to show how it feels about their lack of support!

Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival...warped energy trips up events! Archie Kao appears with "People I've Slept With" cast on red carpet...

Throngs of film enthusiasts swarmed the DGA excitedly in chic designer threads with tickets in hand, the talented cast of “People I’ve slept with” strode the red carpet hyped-up and at-the-ready to discuss their much-anticipated sex comedy, and a rude unprofessional photographer cast a poll on the event long enough to raise a question or two in my mind.

Was it possible that some kind of warped energy swept through the DGA - and tarried just long enough - to throw a monkey wrench into an event that normally went off without a hitch on an upbeat note each year?

The Chinese have a saving worth pondering on occasions like these.

“May you live in interesting times."

Ultimately, will success spoil the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival?

3rd night into the festival, spirits were high, as the paparazzi started snapping away at a posse of well-heeled actors there to plug a movie they were in or one they were supporting on behalf of friends in the business.

On the red carpet, I was rustling up one-on-one interviews, contented as heck.

The cast of  - “People I’ve Slept with” -  were first up and were great subjects to work with by the way (the HD Video captures will be uploaded onto my YouTube site later today).

About two-thirds of the way through - a tall pushy photographer arrived late in the red carpet area - and began to barge his way through a line-up of press hounds who had staked out their perches an hour or so earlier.

At one point, he turned to me, and had the audacity to ask me to move to the other end of the roped-off VIP section so he could assume my spot.

Frankly,  he wasn't asking as much as he was demanding.

No way, Jose.

Not one to stab a person in the back (I prefer telling a person to their face what I think of them cause it helps me sleep nights) I proceeded to point out - in so many words - that he was an hour late for the red-carpet event, unprofessional, and insensitive to other people working the gig.

“You’re a selfish man who only thinks about himself,” I concluded before informing him I did not intend to budge an inch.

I should have broken into the show-stopping "Dream Girls" Broadway Stage hit.
“I tell you I'm going!”

In an angry retort, he yelled back at me.

“Ok. I apologize.”

But - because it was uttered up with such an acid tongue - it didn’t amount to a meaningful heartfelt one.

Was it just for show to appease the other photographers who were now gazing on - shocked - by his insulting conduct?

In addition to his inappropriate behavior, I couldn’t help but notice that he was obviously down on his heels a tad.

For instance, when he bent over at one point, I spotted a seam in the a** of his pants coming apart.

And, it was also obvious to me why folks were trying to avoid the man (who was constantly in everyone's  face) like the plague.

His breath was so wretched it turned the stomach.

Whew!

For the record, it should be noted that this loser has been turning up at events around town, like an old unwashed penny over the past year or so.

One day at the AFI Film Festival, I distinctly recall, that  he complained to me about the fact he often snapped three thousand shots for an event, but often found it difficult to make contacts with media outlets willing to publish (and pay for) the publicity stills.

My immediate thought?

Golly, if you can’t nab the image in two or three shots, give it up.

In my estimation, he’d be better off cleaning toilets somewhere.

At least in that line of employment, he wouldn’t have to fix the hole in his pants or purchase any mouth wash!

Then, at the screening of  - "People I’ve Slept with" -  director Quentin Lee revealed he must have had one too many drinks before the Q & A on stage.

Maybe he was on mind-altering drugs?

For instance, when asked how the “look” of the film - bolstered up with great lighting and a myriad of eye-catching colors which appealed to the artistic sensibilities - came about, he was quick on the uptake (but off the mark).

“Oh, the editor was responsible for that. We should get him up here,” Lee suggested almost as an afterthought.

When the affable dude strode up to the stage and joined the director, they proceeded to make silly remarks (which didn’t make any sense) about the editing process.

Was Mr. Lee Poking fun at the film buff who put forth a question that actually made sense (which ultimately flew over their heads?).

Fortunately, the female lead (Karin Anna Cheung) piped up after grasping the obvious.

“I think he was asking about the lighting, the choice of colors, and the “look” of the film.”

Ah, someone got it.

Duh!

As the director stood there like an idiot, Cheung  noted that there was a large female crew toiling away on the production on set - and that their influence amounted to a female touch.

Thank the Lord for feminine energy!

Quentin Lee didn’t have a clue!

A review of the raunchy sex comedy (riddled with stereotypes and clichés) will follow in a day or two.

At the after-party, it became evident that they should have aptly-named the film group - El Cheapo Productions, though - view of the stingy way they offered up the finger-food.

Before I dashed off to catch - "The Mikado Project" - I couldn’t help but notice that the waiter must have been having long breaks in the back room where the food was being prepared, or had been specifically instructed to drift through with the meager offerings every fifteen minutes or so (because there was so little of it to go around).

A low for the Asian Pacific Film Festival where the organizers are usually quite generous with their filmgoers and patrons.

Then, there was the issue of rude snippy volunteers and staff presiding over the prestigious Fest.

In the three years I’ve attended the festival, I have never encountered snotty workers on duty.

So, the two Asian women manning the door at the Atrium where Quentin’s after-party was being held, stood out like sore thumbs (or nasty bit**es, take your pick).

For instance, when guests attempted to depart the “Sleep" screening celebration, they often strode out of the Atrium with beer in hand for obvious reasons.

After all,  in the main lobby, a number of guests were sipping on bottled beer here and there so it didn’t appear there was any liquor consumption restriction.

The party-goers got a rude awakening when these two iron maidens sharply sniped at them to turn in their bottled beer before exiting the soiree.

Then, a second dilemma arose on the heels of that demand.

When a startled guest  attempted to sit the alcohol container down, there was no place to deposit it.

If the workers were professional, and had some smarts, they would have had a small side table available where guests could set the offending beer bottles down with little fuss.

Such a device would have also tipped off the guests that alcohol wasn’t allowed outside that perimeter.

Instead, the dizzy broads made guests go back into the Atrium, where they had to track down a table top or garbage to displose of it.

There were slim pickings in that regard!

As to “The Mikado Project”?

Well, for starters, a comment made in an intro before the screening just didn't fly.

A speaker at the podium asked filmgoers to look to their left and ask themselves one question.

Is that person next to me illegal?

Then, they were instructed to gaze in the other direction to the individual on the right side, and ponder the same question once again.

Everyone sat a little puzzled by the question.

Then, the off-the-wall host continued.

In the wake of the Arizona Immigration Law, the Asian-American people won't have to worry about being considered illegal.

Why?

He asserted that it was because of the preservation (and presentation) of films with a focus on the Asian-American community over the years, that the community had established around the country they were part of the fabric of the United States.

Hence, there was any chance that the Asian Community would be thought of as illegal.

Huh?

Frankly, I thought the comments were inapprorpiate.

Filmgoers were there to catch a flick, not be hammered over the head with the political agenda of the filmmakers or Festival organizers.

As to "The Mikado Project"?

A critical disaster!

The poorly-made feature was so shoddy and sloppy, it doesn’t even merit a bad review.

But, there were a few fun moments at the DGA Saturday eve.

At the after-party for the "People I’ve Slept With", for instance, ticket-holders who attended the screening were treated to free sex paddles (there are scenes in the film where a female character gets spanked with one) studded bondage neck collars, and other sex toys provided by the local WeHo Pleasure Chest.

A caterer by the name of  "First Street Cuisine" also  provided a number of delectable rice dishes (with chicken and the like) that were reasonable priced until they closed-up shop at about 7 p.m. in the lobby.

Fortunately, I snapped up a healthy-sized chicken & rice bowl before the festivities for the night commenced.

Otherwise, I would have starved to death, thanks to the stingy hosts!

But, today is a fresh day, and I expect that the energy will be renewed.

On the schedule?

Shannon Lee appears at the DGA in a panel discussion about her father Bruce Lee that is expected to attract a large audience of die-hard action-hero fans.

Later in the evening, I expect to take in a couple films.

The "Clash" and "Enemies of the People" (a doc on the "Killing Fields") look promising.

See 'ya there!

Just a few minutes ago, Firemen and Police arrived on the scene of a horrific accident on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood to check the injured and haul away the debris.

Spectators on the street were shocked by the dramatic upset mid-afternoon in the middle of a busy work day.

Lindsay Lohan...@ Millions of Milkshakes! Paparazzi frenzy means $$$...

When Lindsay Lohan strode into "Millions of Milkshakes" (the local Celebrity hang-out) in WeHo the other evening - paparazzi, as usual - were in hot pursuit.

A media frenzy errupted in gay gulch @ Santa Monica & San Vicente as celebrity stalkers jockeyed for position.

One naive young dude shook his head, later.

"I don't get it, Crazy. Why do they stand outside the window taking her picture?"

I laughed.

Obviously, the kid was not in the topsy-turvy business.

I noted that Lindsay was the center of a media storm - right now - partly because of her unexpected witching-hour antics.

"She just got canned from a movie project. Is apparently in debt. And, some say, on the edge of a mental and emotional breakdown."

Also, because of Linday's tendency to fall down and go boom, the paparazzi wants to be there to catch it on film and reap the rewards.

"Huh," he stuttered.

"Well, recently she fell into a cactus bush. The photographer who caught that quirky moment on camera  probably nabbed some big bucks for the shot if it was the best "capture" any of the paparazzi submitted to the news agencies," I added.

"They're probably hoping she'll trip and spill a goey celebrity milkshake all over her cocktail dress."

"Oh," he chuckled.

"Or," I mused, "Spill one on her to get the shot."

Then, was it my imagination, or did it appear that a light bulb went off inside the dude's calculating little brain?

Uh-huh, just betcha, he's going to dash out and buy a camera.

Next week, I expect I'll spy him shoving his way into the pack of wolves for a lion's share of the profits.

Millions of Milkshakes has become quite the hot spot, in WeHo, anyway.

Inside, the atmosphere is quite upbeat and visually stimulating.

Throughout the day, clips of celebrities concocting their own shakes on the premises, are featured on  wide screens dotted about the ice-cream outlet.

There is even a Celebrity GPS tracker to follow the where-abouts of  high-profile stars!

Of course, die-hard fans can also plunk down a few hard-earned bucks, to sip on one of their favorite milkshakes, too.

See 'ya there!

Pssst!

Pam Anderson can oft be spotted at Millions of Shakes on Santa Monica.
Her vegan Milkshake is on tap, so give it a whirl!

Pavillions...insults customers to save face! Sagging profits pay-back...

Low-life Pavillions' employees insult customers!
(older blond hag on cashier the worst)

Oh, those a**holes at Pavillions will never learn, will they?

As I noted in a past post, the employees at the West Hollywood outlet have an IQ of about  2, between the lot of them.

Post:  02/22/10

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2010/02/pavillionscashier-jumps-to-conclusion.html

For example, in recent weeks on my consumer alert page, I warned readers (and shoppers near-and-far) about their racist African-American security guards, harassment of customers while they were innocently shopping (at whim) for the week's groceries, male employee closet-cases trying to put the make on customers in the men's room, and so forth and so on.

One day, I focused on Pavillions' tendency to jump to conclusions about the habits of some of their customers, who are regulars and long-time residents in the neighborhood.

For instance, at the crack of dawn - a posse of residents stream into the grocery store, snap up a bit of fruit, maybe grab a coffee and doughnut - then proceed to plunk themselves down in the Starbuck's cafe to read the paper (after they've paid for the items).

One employee (after-the-fact) - with a bad attitude and looks to match - would then stride through the cafe and assume that the customers didn't pay for their snacks (and what-not)  when he spied empty wrappers and half-full cups of java on their tables.

As I noted in my post, a number of loyal patrons started to get annoyed about being "falsely accused" (by inference, for starters) that they were gobbling up their morning breakfast in the cafe without paying (in spite of the fact they had their receipts in tow to prove otherwise).

Instead of recognizing the error of their employee's despicable unprofessional (unjust) conduct (which amounted to defamation of character and which warranted disciplinary action) Pavillions proceeded to post a rude insulting sign on the side panel of a partition in bold-faced type:

ATT:
CUSTOMERS
PLEASE PAY BEFORE EATING
THANK YOU

Yup.

They're trying to toss the blame on the customer when - in fact - it rests squarely on their own drooping shoulders.

In view of the fact I penned a post enlightening neighborhood shoppers and residents about the stupidity of the cashier and the false assertions, Pavillions should have taken extra precaution not to misjudge (or jump to conclusions) in the future.

Instead, they chose to slap their customers in the face with their insulting sign.

No wonder Safeway (owner of Pavillions) has suffered  a loss of revenue over the past quarter.

Shoppers (and locals alike) are turning away from Pavillions in view of the disturbing conduct of the a**holes in their employ.

As far as I am concerned, they're a useless gang of low-lifes, as evidenced by their revolting conduct.

Losers, the lot of 'em!

Pavillions...cashier jumps to conclusions! Ends up with egg on face...

Every time I saunter into Pavillions it is such a hoot; after all, I can't wait to see what sh** the cashiers, security guards, and management staff  are going to step in next.

The problem is that between the lot of them the sum total of their IQ is about 2.

Today, in spite of past posts about inappropriate employee  conduct, one cashier chose to insult customers by inferring that they hadn't paid for all the items they consumed (say what?) on the property.

Only a total idiot would venture where he dared go!

This employee usually mans a cash register (during irregular hours) half-way between the take-out food counter and the Starbucks Cafe on the Santa Monica Boulevard side of the building.

I should preface this post be noting that a posse of regulars from the neighborhood usually take a jog into the WeHo store - bright and early at the crack of dawn -to snatch up a pastry or two and steaming cup of java or tea.

It's important to note that when the early morning shoppers pluck up the items, they pay for the purchases right-off-the-bat, then setttle in to munch on their goodies and read the morning paper.

About an hour or so later, the clueless cashier I aforementioned, usually saunters in and opens  up his cash register after-the-fact.

Get this!

As he traipses around the cafe to do a quick clean-up, he spies the emptry wrappers next to the customers - and without thinking a beat - assumes that they have stolen the items they purchased earlier at the check out counter up front.

It amazes me that a man (who is fortish or so) would jump to those conclusions - in spite of the fact - he wasn't on duty when the customers first dropped in to the store to rustle up the goodies.

How can an employee infer a person has committed a crime of theft - if they are not in possession of all the facts - or were even an eyewitness to an event that took place before they were on duty?

Notwithstanding, if the Pavillions loser wasn't certain as to whether the items were paid for or not, he could  alert security so they could check the video-taped footage in the manager's office upstairs for proof.

Or in the alternative, ask the cashiers in charge earlier,  if they recall the customer paying for the groceries.

And, 'ya know what?

Just betcha - customers wise to the stupidity that goes down regularly at that Pavillions location probably retained their receipts ( if only to embarass the hell out of any employee who ventured forth with their absurd misplaced accusations).

Notwithstanding, because the security guards are constantly tailing the shoppers (and watching 'em like  a hawk) it is highly doubtful  any thief capable of slight-of-hand would be able to maneuver  a theft in view of all the mind-boggling (excessive) surveillance going down here day in and day out.

Duh!

I pray to the Lord that I will be in the grocery store when thep iece of ka-ka I referred to above, falsely accuses a shopper - because frankly - I think it's high time that a consumer or two sued Pavillions for acting on wild unfounded suspicions (and paranoia) that conjures up  constant harassment, acts of discrimination, and continued violations of shopper's rights.

At this juncture, I highly recommend that management start requiring that potental employees take a course on the Bill of Rights and the 1st Amendment (U.S. Constitution) since it is evident that they will continue to trample on customer's rights until its hammered home that their conduct is highly illegal and will no longer be tolerated.

Pavillions used to be a class act.

Now, the grocer, is a disgrace to the neighborhood!

Pavillions...security guards harass shoppers! Management looks other way...

Goofy irresponsible Management spoils shopping experience!
(WeHo)

Thursday night customers at Pavillions in WeHo were a tad miffed when a security guard strode up to the cozy Starbucks cafe and instructed the handful of regulars sipping on tasty beverages and engaging in a bit of upbeat chatter that the section was being shut-down.

Huh?

The hands on the plain modern clock on the wall confirmed that it was just shy of  9 p.m. on a Thursday night in the heart of gay gulch.

Right off-the-bat, a couple of die-hard social butterflies hauled a couple of straight-back chairs to the other side of the partition, plunked themselves down, and carried on in spite of the nasty impolite intrusion.

"Heh," yelled out the surly African-American guard, "put those chairs back."

One elderly gent piped up in a knee-jerk sort-of reaction.

"We'll just wait here until the cleaning crew finish up," he huffed at the Pavillions staffer.

At this point, the big lug was quick on the uptake, too.

"I'm shutting this section down for the night," he snarled back.

A disgruntled local resident asked to speak to the manager.

"I don't need to get a manager, 'cause I know who I am," he hollered back as he glared down his nose and snickered under his breath.

Huh?

What does "knowing who you are" have to do with a request to rustle up the store manager?

Something was amiss!

This a**hole's attitude, for starters.

I wasn't surprised by what went down, though.

In the past few weeks I reported on a handful of African-American security guards abusing their authority at the same Pavillions.

For instance, I witnessed a couple of racist guards follow white folks around the store - and on a few occasions - harass and intimidate them without provocation.

Although loyal customers have complained about these individuals, management has not taken any action - in fact, in some cases - hasn't even bothered to respond (in spite of the fact pamphlets at the cashier encourage consumers to lodge their opinions on service and quality with the understanding their voice(s) will be heard).

It's all for show, eh?

Shortly after my post was published on the Internet, and the security guards recognized me later when I was shopping in the store, they began to whisper amongst themselves (and point me out to fellow employees).

Now, they give me the old hairy eye-ball everytime I saunter into the store.

'Ya know, I've been shopping at this location for twenty years, and I don't intend to let a gang of thugs intimidate me or try to discourage me from shopping there if I so choose.

When you consider these bullies are outsiders who come into the neighborhood daily to work - then shuffle off at the end of the shift to some hellhole in another part of town - it's downright annoying.

An ill-mannered uneducated ruffian with no class - though attired in a well-pressed dark monkey suit provided by the security company - is still a low-life ruffian (no matter how you cut it).

I generally just breeze in, purchase a handful of items, then pay at the automated cashier.

Subsequently, I have as little contact as possible with these unsophisticated losers.

A scripture says it succinctly:

Never throw pearls before swine.

Amen!

Sonny & Cher...dolls @ BabyJane in West Hollywood!

If you're a doll collector - and especially if your collection focuses on celebrities - you may want to dash over to BABY JANE (a memorabilia shop stacked to the rafters with priceless goodies) at the French Market and snap up a set on display in the window (complete with original boxes and crafted in the image of a celebrated couple who once graced the little boob tube each week in an off-the-wall variety show).

You betcha!

Sonny & Cher are together once again (separated only by a bit of cardboad & plastic) in the display window of the popular destination spot.

The quaint shop - where you can locate just about any piece of trivia or novelty item related to a celebrity you pine for - was previously situated near the back of the Market.

But, now - in a spacious new setting up front - film buffs and fans are able to take a gander at wall-size movie posters splashed across the expansive walls instead of having to roll them out on the floor from a bin at the counter for a look-see.

The owner use to be my landlord a few years go in Hollwyood.

Coincidentally, the tiny sidestreet in the hills where the building was situated, used to boast a turn-of-the-century home where Rudolph Valentino once resided. .

Ironic, that!

Valentino and I share the same birthday (May 6th).

One big difference between the famed heart thob and moi, though.

Rudy was a silent film star, while I'm a loud-mouthed superstar!

Stop by BABY JANE and check out all the delightful keepsakes on tap.

By the way, the name of the collectibles shop was coined from one of Charles' favorite films starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

You got it.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane!

Starbucks...immature staff insult customers! Screwed priorities off-putting...

Times must be tough!

One upon a time, if you waltzed into Starbucks for a piping hot cup of java, you'd be treated to a smile and professional service.

Today, a customer should count themselves lucky if they don't get insulted, particularly if they zip into the Starbucks location in WeHo (across from 24-Hour fitness).

For starters, the barristas there go to great lengths to find novel ways to keep homeless people away (and out of) the comfortable environs of their precious little cafe in gay gulch.

In fact, I was so shocked at the way they mistreated the less fortunate, that I penned a post on the issue a few months ago along with a consumer alert.

Post:  06/09

http://ijulian.blogspot.com/2009/06/starbucksdown-on-homeless-nope-no.html

Obviously,  management at Starbucks must have missed the searing critique, because not much as changed.

In fact, now the immature barristas at the leading (but slipping quickly) java outlet appear to have their sights on customers who pop into the outlet for a quick pick-me-up and pastry, too.

The staffers I am referring to are like a bunch of wide-eyed kids with their noses up against the window of the candy store anxious to get their grubby hands on the goodies in the window.

But, the spoils are just beyond their reach.

Tough ti**y!

So, they vent their anger on the privileged, to retaliate.

One gentleman - who drives a $300,000.00 Rolls Royce and is married to a well-known celebrity - is fodder for a bevy of cruel jokes they hurl his way (he, none the wiser).

The little green-eyed monsters tend to mistreat regulars, as well, simply because they are jealous of the objects of their disdain who drive up in fancy sportscars and the lastest fashion trends.

I witnessed one pathetic Asian employee (the short plump one, not the affected Queen) walk away from the cashier when he spied a customer strolling in his direction to the counter.

The snub was obvious; in fact, another employee was forced to step in awkwardly and try to smooth over the troubled waters.

What prompted this rude inappropriate conduct?

Pride, no doubt.

The dizzy barrista thinks he's too good to wait on some folks.

If that's the case, bozzo, take a hike!

Oh yes, the employees here are excited to pick up their paychecks each week, but when it comes to actually working for the cold-hard cash (i.e., waiting on people)  - if they had their druthers - they'd let 'em eat cake.

One nutso staffer who works on the counter (well, sort of!) tends to plop herself down alongside a customer or two unannounced during the course of her shift on a regular basis, in a bold-faced effort (I expect) to fool herself into thinking she's not actually toiling away for a couple of bucks an hour.

Ouch!

Consequently, patrons are forced to wait patiently until the little Princess gets off her fat a** and shifts her slovenly bod into higher gear.

Even still, she's a dreary mess!

A lot of these kids stream into town from the boondocks somewhere seeking their fortune & fame.

Unfortunately, they are a bunch of losers with no talent; consequently, the Hollywood dream never pans out.

So, they take it out on the customers, who they envy!

Bottom line, Starbucks employees in WeHo will shun customers who expound views they disagree with, wear the wrong gym shorts, support social or political causes they don't  hanker to, you name it..

Golly, I thought that when an individual worked for a company like Starbucks, they were reqiuired to leave all their personal "baggage" at the door and treat each customer equally (not discriminate unjustly at whim).

So, I called management at Starbucks, to verify their policy.

Right off-the-bat, a customer service rep assured me that they did not support the kind of inappropriate conduct I enlightened her about.

"All customers should be treated equally. You're right."

At this juncture, the pleasant spokesperson asssured me the District Manager would be having a few words with the  employees in question with the specific aim of getting their priorities straight.

Turns out - that being a squealer - can be profitable!

She promised to mail me a couple of free coupons for beverages on the house!

I trust that she'll also remember to inform those spoiled brats that customers never tip lazy barristas who "give attitude".

After all, no one in their right mind should reward insulting behaviour, eh?

West Hollywood...thoughtless woman with low IQ asks driver to turn engine off!

A friend of mine has been having a problem with his brake pedal.

Occasionally, when he is away from the vehicle, the brake light turns on at whim.

Consequently, without warning, the battery may run down.

Last night, as he sat in his vehicle on Waring Street with the engine on charging the system, a woman strode up and tapped on his window.

When he rolled the tinted glass down, she issued a directive.

"You should turn your engine off. Air is coming out."

Obviously, the unexpected intruder was not very articulate. She probably meant to say "fumes", not air.

People are very quick to find fault or act on their own selfish self-serving interests without verifying the facts first.

If the woman had any intelligence worth shaking a stick at, she would have given the driver the benefit of the doubt.

Before assuming the worst - that my friend was an SUV monster inclined to pollute the environment, for instance - she should have considered the possibility that there was a legitimate reason for his actions.

Most motorists probably would have told the pesky interloper to take a hike in less than pleasant terms.

Instead, my friend calmly deal with the situation in a classy way.

"Thank you for bringing it to my attention," he responded politely.

"I appreciate it."

Gandhi would be proud!

The message for the day?

Think before you encroach on another person's rights - and in the process - avoid looking like a fool!

As a teacher once elucidated years ago:

"If we had more foresight than hindsight, we'd all be better off by a damn sight."

Gelsons...cat food cheaper than CVS. Meow!

Mayfair Market used to be situated where Gelsons is now.

When I was ensconced in my cozy little apartment on Flores years ago, the corner market was just a hop-and-a-skip away, so I tended to shop there.

The staff were pleasant, the products were reasonably priced, and other shops were in walking distance if there was a need to pick up specialty items.

One of the perks included the occasional glimpse of singer Johnny Mathis or Streisand's son - Jason - squeezing fruit and vegetables in the produce department.

But, I moved, and started to shop at Pavilions.

Now that the Von's grocery is under construction, and temporarily shut-down, I have been forced to seek shopping-cart adventures elsewhere.

Last week, when I succumbed to a stray's whines, I was forced to dash into Gelsons for a can of cat food.

Not being a pet owner in a couple of years, I wasn't able to gauge the prices.

Nonetheless, they appeared to be within a reasonable range, so I plucked up a bit of the well-packaged attractive-looking stuff.

Shortly after "Gonzo" (a black two-year old with skit-zoid tendencies) gobbled down the last of it - I happened to be in the neighborhood of CVS - so I lurched in there on a gamble.

Surely, with their rock-bottom prices on Gatorade and Vitamin water, cat food would be inclined to hit the lower register, too.

Wrong!

On average, every pet food product on their well-stocked shelves, was about twenty-to-thirty cents more expensive than Gelsons.

'Ya got it.

I'm a regular at Gelsons, now.

Cruising ain't so bad, either!

Say, is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Tooth "Emergency". Knight saves day...

Wouldn't you know it, as I headed down the street back home from the grocery store on the eve of the big holiday weekend, one of my crowns popped out of my mouth, bounced off my knee, and sprang into the inky depths beyond!

A thousand bucks down the drain?

As luck would have it, "Happy Hour" was upon us, so all the muscled studs in festive Boys town were heading out to the local watering holes to toss down a few.

And yes, there I was - the total fool - crawling around on hands and bare knees (no nasty jokes, please!) widely-scanning the terrain for the well-crafted elusive dental appliance.

Yeah, I used to have a gap between my two front teeth like top fashion model - Lauren Hutton - until Dr. Newman (no kidding, that was my dentist's name) fitted a glittering set of natural-looking crowns front-row-and-center.

Great workmanship, they don't even look like chicklets.

The secret, the dentist whispered in my ear, was in the backing.

Because a cheap or poorly-conceived alloy on the reverse is capable of distorting the natural light as it passes through the porcelain, the crown may end up smacking of a phony a mile away.

But, getting back to my sad tale!

As a few hotties scurried by - and guffawed under their breath - I frantically tried to locate the little sucker.

Then, a knight in shining armour happened along, in the form of a concerned resident who lived in the neighborhood.

When I explained my predicament, he not only displayed a lot of sympathy, but pitched in to help!

To passers-by - now there appeared to be two lost souls scrounging around on the pavement - for no good reason.

At one juncture - it was evident to both of us - there wasn't enough street light to facilitate the task.

But, the good-natured dude turned out to be resourceful, as well.

He snatched up his cell phone from its resting place on his belt, flipped it open smartly, then shone the eerie blue light onto the pavement improving the circumstances somewhat.

"Just how far could a crown bounce," I wondered aloud.

Now, he put his thinking cap on.

Turns out, a handful of buddies worked in "A Different Light" bookstore, so he darted inside to locate a flashlight.

Yes, as Bette Midler would croon, 'ya got to have friends!

The long and short of it?

The scamp was spied just off the curb under the front end of a late model sedan about to pull into bustling city traffic.

Whew!

When I complimented the good Samaritan, he turned beet red!

"I'm blushing," he stammered self-consciously, as his male friend gave him a huge bear-sized hug.

I headed out the door, elated.

I toyed with the idea of popping in to a drugstore - to buy some denture cream to affix the crown to the chiseled pin protruding from my jaw - but figured I'd just leave the trouble-maker tightly wrapped in a handkerchief to avoid mishaps the rest of the evening.

Then, I encountered a new dilemma out-of-the blue, as I sashayed down the strip.

It seemed that everywhere I turned - as sensual balmy breezes pulled me this way 'n that under the night's mysterious cloak - potential hook-ups starting materializing out of the woodwork to put the make on me!

Must be the "humping" law, eh?

Go out on Safari for quick nookie, 'ya get nary a nibble.

Show up looking like you've been hit by a mack truck, and the babes are all over you, like a condom on prom night.

One major problemo!

If I sidled by to chat - I'd no doubt shock the bejesus out of 'em - when they caught sight of the ghastly menacing gap beckoning from the caverns of my not-so-sexy or very effervescent Pepsodent mouth.

Don't suppose you'd like a chain saw bearing down on your *!@%*+!

But, a couple of suitors were persistent.

Consequently, I found myself glancing down a lot, to hide my mouth.

The hopeful ones fantasized I was checking out their bods, I guess.

Sex therapists have noted (by the way) that when two flirts engage in an encounter - the first one to glance away - is allegedly the dominant one.

Or maybe, the anxious Lotharios mistook the body language for shyness?

Heck, you know what they say about the quiet ones.

Wild in-between the sheets!

Did anyone suspect?

Obviously, not the stunner I ended up in the sack with.

Next time we hook up, as "Ricky" on "The Lucy Show" would say,

"I've got some 'splainin' to do."

Unless, the ardent lover thought I was just two sheets to-the-wind.

Ah, yes!

Typical horn dog sex theatrics on a party night in West Hollywood, fer sure.

Donna Summer...has gay community forgiven her?

Well, I was window-shopping at the French Market Place the other night, when the distinctive catchy beat of a hit from the past - "Love to Love You Baby" - began to float through the bustling cafe.

Ah - a myriad of scintillating images of erotic-filled Disco Nights at Studio 1 - came flooding back!

The week-end at the trendy watering hole attracted the biggest turn-out. By midnight on Friday or Saturday - a muscled pack of studly young hunks descended on the trendy watering hole - originally owned by the infamous Scott Forbes.

Once a toy-boy managed to maneuver his shapely a** through a long queue that usually snaked down La Peer Street - he often encountered "Rose" on the upstairs landing - who photographed all the young studs as they came through the "revolving" door that was known as gay gulch.

Who knows, the young hottie might be featured on the wide screen hanging over the dance floor, the following week!

The ubiquitous bar was always a hotbed of activity - manned by the most flawless bartenders in town - who served up seemingly endless rounds of exotic cocktails, shooters, and expensive splits of champagne.

Then - when the sensual pulsating beat of a Donna Summer vinyl started up - a roar would surge up from the dance floor as hundreds of writhing slithering sweat-soaked bodies tossed off their shirts, sniffed a little poppers, and began to rock away the night in a sort-of tribal dance.

Ah, those were wild uninhibited days, and - in a way - such innocent times. With a fistful of surplus dollars, gays snapped up her records, and Ms. Summer rose to the top of the charts.

It was truly a "summer" of love that year.

Then, suddenly, shock waves shot throughout the gay and lesbian community.

One day out-of-the-blue - Donna Summer suddenly found "God" - and became a devout Christian. On the heels of this dramatic turn in her life, the nervy chanteuse proceeded to publicly denounce the gay lifestyle - and in the wake of the disastrous public relations move - lost her million-dollar fan base during the course of the fiasco.

Faster than you could say - "Brutus" or traitor - Summer's hit records not only ended up in trash bins in a zillion bits of distressed plastic all over the country - but vanished from the airwaves, as well.

Guess a lot of those closeted "fags" or the "Velvet Mafia" manipulated behind the scenes to ensure she - as the old saying goes - would never take lunch in this town again.

Ms. "holier-than-thou" slunk away in disgrace. Though she tried a couple of comebacks in recent years - after apologizing profusely to the gay community - nada!

Now, it appears Ms. Summer and her record company are trying to resurrect the dead.

Well, one Christian ethic is to "forgive".

Will the rainbow community turn the cheek and give her a second chance?

Tropical Birds...Polly want a cracker!

I was strolling down Kings Road the other night - minding my own business, as usual (Ha!) - when a tropical bird high up in the exotic foliage of an old banana tree actually whistled at me!

I looked skyward in amazement, as a couple sauntered by on the street and laughingly noted,

"That silly bird always does that!"

The surprise incident triggered a memory of one of my favorite jokes.

What does a forty pound parrot say?

Polly want a cracker right fu**ing now!

Truman Capote...a brief encounter!

Years ago, I rented a small flat on quaint Flores Street in the heart of West Hollywood.

One of my favorite past-times was to slip into the Nicholas Wilder Contemporary Art Gallery on Santa Monica Boulevard right across from Circus Books (stocked with skin mags, mostly) where David Hockey was often spied in the backroom flipping through racy gay porn.

Talk about the distance between high and low-brow art!

Wilder's gallery was an oasis in a vast cultural wasteland long before galleries opened their doors along Melrose, La Cienega, and La Brea.

After mingling with the likes of Jack Nicholson at an afternoon art opening, I trundled on down the street to the Posh Bagel where I planned to snack on a couple of their house specialties.

As I strolled down the strip, suddenly I spied Truman Capote sauntering along in my direction just up-a-ways. Obviously, he was a friend of Nick's, and on his way to take in the stimulating exhibition.

As we were about to pass on the sidewalk, Mr. Capote half-turned, eyed me appreciatively up and down, and exclaimed:

"Oh my!"

I chuckled, gave a little nod, and went on my merry way.

Later, I could of kicked myself.

I guess I should have stopped and engaged in a little idle chit-chat.

After all, the celebrated author was quite a remarkable intellectual, and a fascinating complex person, to boot!

Ah, but I still have the memory of our brief encounter!

One of my favorites quotes pertains to his hilarious observations about Tinsel town.

"It's a scientific fact," he slyly asserted one day.

"For every year a person lives in Hollywood, they lose two points off their IQ."
